Went to Als on a Wednesday evening, it wasn't too busy and the atmosphere was just right. Ordered the meat pizza and two PBR Tallboys (for $2, can't beat that). The service was fantastic, our server was very attentive my only complaint is that the pizza was light on the meat (for a meat lovers pizza over $20). I have had that pizza before and it was loaded up more on the previous visit, we waited a while for the pizza and did not want to send it back and wait longer so we ate it, and it was still good. I gotta say, I'm pretty flexible when it comes to pizza. I mean, my standards are not that high so it takes a lot to disappoint me. Well, Al's Pizza did just that. I was in town with 2 other friends for business. We googled pizza places near our hotel and Al's popped up. We ordered a Sicilian Pizza and some toasted ravioli. The girl on the phone who took our order was great. Very helpful. That's when the happiness ended. The pizza arrived a little quicker than they told us. When I opened the hotel door, the delivery guy (Seth, who told me he was the delivery driver supervisor) had food in hand. The toasted ravioli were sitting on top of the pizza box. I took both items and proceeded to open the pizza. I always want to be sure it's right. Well, the cheese was stuck to the top of the box lid. Of course, we weren't pleased with that. I showed it too him and he just kind of tied to blow it off saying things like "oh, this happens all the time with these pizzas". Really?? I started hinting to maybe getting us a new one (because he sure didn't suggest it) then he said "I could get you a new one but it will probably end up the same way since there boxes are not high enough for the Sicilian pizzas. HELLO!! Maybe get a bigger or deeper box???? I took the food and shut the door disappointed. Either way, we were all hungry by now. The toasted ravioli were good I will give them that, but the pizza had a very bad tasted too it. First off, they seem to use marinara sauce on their pizza versus a traditional rich tomato pizza sauce. The sausage tasted kind of odd as well. As we finished up 1 slice each, we were pretty much over that pizza. After an hour or so, we were all still hungry. We ended up calling Pizza Hut and ordered a Supreme Pan Pizza. It was AMAZING! Another thing we noticed, the pizza was set aside in the corner of the hotel room. It had a really fowl odor too it that just didn't fade away. I mean, it was really odd. Ordered delivery numerous times from here. Always the same item, calzones...sometimes it's worth the price, but lately, the calzones have been very small and skimpy, and I only order two ingredients in my calzone. Maybe it's due to it being a Friday night, but that shouldn't make ANY difference . This time I ordered one antipasto and one calzone. My total cost was $30.92 which includes a small delivery fee, but without the tip... You would think they would load the calzone up for the price of about $14. It's more like a slice of pizza, just more dough. The antipasto for around $12, came with romaine (mostly white tough pieces), two pepperoni slices, two small pieces of salami, three very thin slices of tomato, a few sliced canned black olives, red onion, and a sprinkle of mozzarella cheese. Are you kidding me??? That's not even close to an antipasto, especially for the price. The house dressing is a mere oil and vinegar, nothing special. I'm only writing this out of frustration. Al's calzone used to be my way of rewarding myself for a month or so of hard work and saving $$$. Lately, it's been a huge disappointment AND a waste of my hard earned $$$. In fact, I promised myself the last three times I ordered at night, that I would not order from Al's again... the problem is that I love their Italian sausage, and calzone dough. Definitely will not be returning. While the staff may be friendly/ they have good customer service. The food is extremely bland and overpriced. Waste of money. Definitely wouldn't recommend or get the pizza again as both styles were bland. For being a pizza place the pizza was zero out of five stars. Frozen pizza is better. Everything was way underseasoned. Maybe the other dishes are better? Service was 4 out of 5 stars. Today I learned that Al's pizza originated in this local area and the first location was opened all the way down Atlantic at Neptune beach. My daughter & I had lunch today at the Riverside location. I hadn't been in a while then it hit me it was because it can take long for the food to make it to your table. Other than that, they have great lunch specials, affordable pizza & offer by the slice as well. I've only had the pizza which is fairly good and fresh. I can't speak to anything else on the menu. I know yall have read countless reviews from me talking about needing dinner at work. Here it is again! Only this is a little different. Im pretty sure we all order from here at least twice a week, sometimes five or more of us at a time. We mainly order online, and they bring it all together. I ordered a pizza Margherita, an Italian sausage appetizer and a pepperoni and sausage calzone. The pizza was very good. Al's usually makes very good pizza. The calzone was good as well. My problem was with the Italian sausage. It was very salty. It wasn't the sauce or the cheese, it was the actual sausage,and I'm not shy when it comes to salt. I went to pick up my order during lunch time so it was fairly busy. My suggested pick up time was 12:03pm. They got my order out about 12:10 or 12:15 but the order was mixed up with another order so I had to wait a couple more minutes for them to fix it. read more

Meh. Car parking Nazi upon arrival set the standard for what to expect. No acknowledgement on arrival, staff stood around chatting to one another with no offer of help until random staff member (they really were not that busy at all) asked if we needed assistance. Eventually got shown to an empty booth by a limp and uninspiring server with about as much vigor and excitement as a wet paper bag. Took a while for him to return and take our order, then when the pizzas were delivered, I couldn't help but notice that I've had more superior frozen pizzas than what was offered. I've heard a lot about Al's since moving to Jacksonville last year, and I finally had a chance to stop by this weekend when my family came to town. After exploring the Five Points area, we stopped in to grab something to eat after smelling the food inside from the street. The atmosphere is edgy but comfortable, a perfect balance to fit in with the surrounding area. The large bar near the entrance is deceiving though - the restaurant only serves beer and wine, so don't expect to order a cocktail. This wasn't that big of a problem for my family since we love craft beer and they had local choices on tap. My family is pretty large, and our order was big to match, but the service was patient and quick. We started with the sampler appetizer, a table pleaser with fried mozzarella sticks, fried ravioli, fried zucchini and fresh bruschetta. Definitely worth ordering if you're rolling in to Al's with a big party to help tide you over until the main course comes in. For entrees, we ordered the stuffed shells, chicken parm, fettuccine alfredo, chicken tenders, margarita pizza and Caribbean chicken pizza. I would recommend all of them, and my family really enjoyed the meal. The portions were large, and we had leftovers for lunch the next day. Sadly there are no pictures to show the proof, as we started digging in as soon as the servers set the plates down. The pizza is what they're most known for, and it's definitely a solid choice with a thin, hand-tossed crust, fresh sauce and dozens of topping combinations to choose from. I think this would be a great date spot or place to take family for a quick meal. Just the pure, simple basics that are sure to please. I went here for lunch today, very nice clean atmosphere. The service was kinda slow, but not crazy slow. The staff were friendly and helpful. I ordered the buffalo chicken calzone. It was definitely up there with some of the best calzones I've had. The cheeses and sauces were the right amount which made the calzone in my opinion great and not soggy. I'm a huge fan of this place, for sure! I would consider Al's the best pizza in downtown Jax. I kind of figured that Florida would have great Italian food with all the transplanted people from the New England area, and I was not disappointed! I had the veggie thin crust pizza, and it was to-die-for. The veggies weren't overcooked, the crust was nice and crisp, and the seasoning was delightful. One of my co-workers had the salmon, which looked amazing. Another co-worker had the penne with a primavera sauce, and that was delicious.
