As Easter was an especially cool temperature, day, siting outdoors wasn't an option; indoors was air conditioned , all of which decreased our pleasure. This is an example of a restaurant that did not deliver a good value. I was disappointed in the portion sizes of the pastas and entree's. It tasted good but these were small plates at a premium price. Service was "here are your menus, I will be back to take your orders." Wine list pricing is astronomical! I spent over $400 for two,people and left hungry. Maybe this restaurant could justify this is the past, it certainly does not today. Fairly average across the board, probably closer to a 3.5. SERVICE (4/5): Pretty much as you'd expect - just attentive enough, clearing out plates and taking orders timely, and no ridiculous hunt for the check. Nothing special, but better than many of these other reviews I'm seeing. AMBIANCE (5/5): This might be my favorite part of the restaurant. It's the perfect balance of elevated and casual. The lighting is modern but warm, the high ceilings remove any discomfort that the closely-packed tables may have caused, and the noise was the perfect balance between lively background conversation without needing to raise your voice to have your own chat. FOOD (3/5): Some highs and lows. The fennel salad and chicken were the standouts, both delicious and better than I expected. The cacio e pepe was bland. I know it's a creative choice, but the long tubular noodles did not serve the dish well. They poorly carried the sauce, which was minimal and not notably flavorful to begin with, and felt more like a novelty choice than something to aid the dish. The pomodoro was fine - as it should be, though not sure it justified the price. We were also encouraged to order everything for the table as if it were all shareable, which is probably due to their noticeably small portion sizes, but none of the foods served well for easy sharing. The cacio e pepe had ten (10) noodles - for context, there were four of us. The chicken provided for some awkward cutting, and both the fennel salad + the pomodoro created some difficult moments when transferring to plates. Overall, I would only return for the ambience and location; the food left a bit more to be desired. This is my absolute favorite restaurant in Manhattan. The service is always warm and professional, and the food does not disappoint, though it's sometimes surprising, like the sauceless pork ragu which isn't really clear on the menu. My current go-to is the pasta pomodoro, which seems like too simple a dish to order in a restaurant but the way they make it is incredible. I was told it has calabrian chili oil in it which deepens the flavor profile and the tomatoes are bright to balance. When I've had that I have never been disappointed with my meal. It's also just a super pleasant and beautiful space to spend time in, typically not too loud. And getting a reservation is typically doable. Keep up the good work! read more

We had a divine experience at Altro Paradiso last night. The pane e ricotta was absolutely delicious, with light, fluffy whipped ricotta/mascarpone. The arancini are to die for; loved the twist with calabrian chili dipping oil instead of marinara. The finocchio was fine; There was a brininess to the dish that wasn't my favorite. I can also concede I am a traditionalist with salads. As for the pastas: The cacio e pepe and pomodoro were HEAVEN. I was surprised at how delicious I found the pomodoro; perfect example of a very simple dish executed perfectly. The mushroom malfatti was also very good; it was however our least favorite of the three. Overall, Altro Paradiso was a fantastic experience and I can't wait to go back. The careful and meticulous preparation of each dish makes this some of the best Italian food in the city. I'm going out of town for work for two months, and I'm already looking forward to a return meal here when I get back. read more

I am descended from Italian immigrants, been to Italy many times, am in NYC all the time - this was as good an Italian experience as I've had here. I cannot fathom other than price why other reviews are less than five stars. The creativity of the chef combining ingredients from different parts of Italy worked extremely well - the suppli we had were the best I ever had spiced by peppers from Calabrian etc. Every appetizer - the tuna tartar; the polenta with honey and pecorino; the prosciutto - were all beautifully prepared and presented, the ingredients clearly world class. The pastas were perfect - both in texture but combination of ingredients in often very simple ways. The team could not have been more warm, instructive and helpful overall. The wine woman was a hoot - with tremendous energy, humor and experience and chose unusual and superb wines speaking with our preferences. read more

Sister to one of my favorite restaurants, Estela, Altro Paradiso brings the same pleasantries and New American/ Modern Italian comfort to this wood accented bar. Service: 5/5 Food: 4.2/5 Wine: 5/5 The Caprese salad was one of the best I've had with incredibly fresh heirloom tomatoes and a garlic rub on the plate and the Arrancini was ! The Gnocchi Cacio E Pepe with fresh Black Truffle fell slightly short despite the decadent ingredients of the dish. The Wagyu Burger was delicious but very slightly overcooked. Dessert was average, you can most definitely skip on that. The natural wine selection just like Estela, was excellent. Solid option at decent prices but wouldn't rank as a must try! read more

I had lunch at Altro Paradiso today. It was my first time back here in a few years. I remember when it was called Cafe Altro Paradiso. Anyway, the food's still good and service is still pleasant. I got the same thing I had last time - arancini balls and Wagyu burger. The arancini balls have a slight sweetness to them. The cheese used is fontina cheese. The Calabrian chili sauce on the side was spicier than I expected. Wagyu burger is good, but note that it comes out medium rare by default. I asked if medium could be accommodated, but when I got my dish it was still a little under for me. No biggie. I will note that the fries have changed from what they were a little over four years ago. Instead of the crispy and soft home fries type, what you get now is more traditional. Still a decent blend of crispy and soft, but not the same. See photo. Overall, still a nice restaurant to have lunch in. Impressive space, looks like the well to do eat here. I ordered the artichoke lasagna on a weekend and it was $30 for such a small portion of pasta and artichoke I was not impressed. Everything else is super expensive. Another amazing visit. We came with a group of four and got the prosciutto with pizza fritta, arancini, piselli, and salsiccia to start, followed by two orders of the cacio pepe along with the linguine nero and the ricotta gnocchi, and then finished with a special apricot tart, the chocolate torta, and their mango olive oil gelato. We loved everything and would consider getting any of these again. The sausage was maybe the biggest surprise -- this isn't typically our favorite kind of thing, but this was excellent and the spicy mustard that came with it was really outstanding. The Calabrian chile oil that comes with the arancini also really hit the spot for me again, but I'd also have a hard time not ordering their prosciutto on a future visit. The desserts were new to us, and we were really impressed -- the tart was good, but the torta and the gelato were both really excellent. (I'd consider trying a different flavor gelato next time, although this one was really great.) We'll be back. read more

I came here with my friend during the summer for brunch, and while it would have been nice to sit outside and listen to the jazz band play, it was entirely too hot to do so. We sat inside which was lovely and very comfortable. We ordered the fennel salad to start and then each got pasta dishes. I got the gnocchi and my friend ordered another pasta dish (which I can't remember off hand), but they messed up her order and ended up giving her a complimentary pasta dish for free. The service was great and the space is beautiful. Would definitely come back again for brunch or dinner. read more

Yummy food, lovely interior, but if you come here try to make a reservation! Even for lunch hours they can get quite busy and fill up (I came around noon and had to sit at the bar). They're most known for the fennel salad & tuna tartare, neither of which I tried this time but those are 2 of the Altra classics. I tried the fig salad (which was very YUM, the figs were super fresh) and 2 pastas - both of which were also good, but a bit on the heavier side. I was here earlier in the week. It was quite busy and it was clear they wanted to turn over the table quickly. We originally ordered the arancini and burrata. Luckily, the waiter asked me about my allergies because he comes over to me later to inform us the arancini is fried in peanut oil. They really should mention that on the menu. The burrata was delicious. Sweet and savory at the same time. I ordered the cacio e Pepe which was really good. The noodles are quite long so you have to cut them. I was surprised they didn't offer parmesan for the pasta. They ran out of the chocolate gelato. We ordered passion fruit instead. It wasn't my favorite. A bit sour. Other tables got a bread basket. We each got one piece of bread but was told it came with our burrata. I came here on a Saturday specifically for the burger. I booked my reservation on Resy and Resy indicated that 5pm was still considered lunch so I booked it. When I came, the burger was not on the menu. They said they had no oysters which was confusing considering they have etched in the bar mirror Oysters All Day. The waitress asked us if we wanted any drinks from the bar and we said no. She seemed annoyed. We were ready for appetizers but not the main course and asked the waitress if we could order it. She said no, she had to place the table's order all together. This made no sense considering the party was only 2 people. The waitress did not check in on us even once. The waitress didnt even bother to serve us the water, she just left it behind on a bench from our table. This is a "fancy" place per say but they couldn't even serve us water. Even the staff at diners go around the tables and serve water. On top of that, the pasta was undercooked. Considering this is an Italian place, you would think this would not be an issue. I will say that the arancini was good, I liked that the sauce had a good amount of heat. Although, it's not really a shareable appetizer because you only get 3 portions. Cutting it in half would mess up the filling. The only other saving grace was that the black male waiter was extremely nice. The waitress was not busy so there was no excuse for her behavior. This spot was well reviewed under food bloggers and critics but I think they gave it a good review too quickly. read more

I was approaching this restaurant on Spring street, and it looked inviting. I thought it would be a good place to grab some pasta and a glass of wine. Then I saw a water standing behind a little podium where spare silverware and such are kept. He clearly thought passersby could not see him, but we could! Much to my horror, I observed this waiter pulling out a butter knife and vigorously itching his back with great gusto and every direction possible. I was not the only horrified onlooker. While the restaurant was largely empty (with no shortage of reservations on any of the apps) the staff told us on THREE OCCASIONS that the other patrons (who???) were angry with us. With plenty of room for all, and having been there for a grand total of 1.5 hours, I am in disbelief at the treatment and disrespect. Not to mention the drinks were weak and the food unmemorable. Alright - I don't like to rank a restaurant after eating only one dish there, but I'm still bent out of shape about this meal several weeks later. I really, really wanted to try Cafe Altro Paradiso. We made a reservation for weekend brunch. The restaurant is super cute and bright, and the hostess was nice to us. We were seated immediately and I didn't even need to look at the menu - I already knew what I wanted. I ordered the waffle with apple compote and creme fraiche. Doesn't that sound good? Well... The waffle came out and the creme fraiche was on top, but the apple compote was under the waffle, which made the middle of the waffle mushy but left the outside dry and too crispy. Additionally, while the top of the waffle simply looked overdone, the entire bottom of this waffle was burnt. I felt a little insulted that someone would serve me a charred waffle and assume I wouldn't notice. For $14, I'd prefer to invest in a waffle maker and make them myself in the comfort of my own home. read more

Was fortunate enough to eat here during my stay the week before NYC was put on a strict stay at home order. Met my aunt here for brunch as it is one of her favorite spots. Understandably so! Everything was made to perfection and the service was so nice and personable from the hostesses to the servers. The complimentary fresh seeded bread and olive oil was delicious and a great mixture of flavor. We ordered the Fennel salad to share and then I had the Eggs and Wild Mushroom dish. Phenomenal! Altro Paradiso is a great choice for dinner. They have a nice wine selection and delicious food. We started with their house salad which has the best flavor combination- olives, parmesan, lemons, greens. I ordered the lemon tagliolini which tastes amazing and was cooked to perfection. They make their own pasta in house so you know its high quality. For dessert we had biscottis and chocolate cake with some amaro. Their biscottis are the perfect after dinner treat to dip into your coffee as you finish the dinner convo. When ordering the amaro, a server came over with a selection for us to choose from. He gave us a tasting and a description of each before letting us select which we wanted to drink. I liked that he was so knowledgeable and provided great recommendations. We ended up being at this restaurant for 4 hours total just eating, drinking, and talking. The atmosphere is very bright (but not to bright) and open. The tables fill up quickly and it does become a bit loud inside but nothing over bearing. All staff we encountered were so nice and very attentive. I'd definitely come back here. read more

Cacio e pepe is a basic dish and needs a special noodle to make it spectacular. My cacio e pepe was disappointedly served with spaghetti noodles for $25! The sauce was too peppery and very sharp.
