2016 Yelp 100 Challenge Review #12 Really enjoyed Angela's Cafe this morning. I was hella "hungy" as my nephew would say and I needed something quickly to go but didn't want to stop into a fast food joint or go to far plus I wanted a hot breakfast versus a smoothie that I normally opt for in a crunch. I had this place bookmarked plus it was a hop skip away from where I was so I went for it. I'd never been there before so I opted not to order by phone. Angela's Cafe is a part of a shopping center located off the intersection of Inwood and Lovers Lane in Dallas. They have plenty of parking. Upon entering, I was immediately greeted and the young lady took care of me from start to finish. She asked me if I needed a menu and I said yes. She also showed me the board with the day's specials. I opted for the Migas breakfast special which came with free coffee - much needed today. I also got some fruit and a cookie. This was gonna be my one meal for a while since I was headed to lock myself in an office. All in all, the customer service was very attentive and pleasant, the service was quick (my coffee, my food and then to pay) and my food was delicious. I don't eat migas a lot (probably a crime here in Texas lol) but these came with chorizo and a side of hashbrowns. It was very filling yet it was not heavy feeling. I opted for sourdough toast instead of tortillas (probably another offense to Texas Migas lovers). I can say I am officially a fan of Angela's Cafe. They offer so much more too. They bake their cookies in house. I know because I saw macadamias on wax paper on a cookie sheet. They also offer fresh juicing and both fruit and ice cream smoothies. The bathroom was clean. The dining area was spacious enough and there were two separate sitting areas. I think you check out at the cash register versus a waitress bringin it to you because there was a line waiting to pay when I came in. What a gem! I'll be back : ) read more

An unlikely cafe snuggled on the first floor of the shopping strip at the northeast quadrant of Lovers and Inwood Rd. At first glance, the cafe appears out of the ordinary - a well-maintained building, but the interior of this cafe stamps its age. Cosmetic updates are highly demanded, but please don't change the service or food. I've lived in this area over 10 years and never batted my eyes in this direction, thanks to yelp, they led me right to this place when I was looking for breakfast a joint that was open at 6 in the morning. Very well-priced food and generous portions. I ordered breakfast tacos and they were filled generously with chorizo, potatoes, egg and cheese. So glad I found this joint! You would expect a breakfast place in the vicinity of university park/highland park to be over-the-top, pretentious, and horribly over-priced. Well, you couldn't be more wrong if you came to Angela's! The line may be long on the weekend, but this neighborhood establishment is frequented by the young and old, the food (everything on the menu) is fantastic, the coffee is delicious, the service is friendly, and the prices are the best part of the experience! This place is cheap, will fill you to the brim with delicious food (and send the leftovers with you for later), and an overall perfect breakfast experience! read more

So, I rarely write reviews. Bad food, terribly plain bland and greasy. WORSE service and I found a butter wrapper in the bottom of my water!!! I didn't use any butter!!!! And the manager never came by!!!!! There was no apology!!!! I worked in the service industry, I understand sh*t can happen but this place is an unorganized disaster. The staff is overworked. Beyond the contamination of my water, the food and service quality should be enough to shut this place down, yet it's strangely popular. I'm writing this review real time, the waiter just made a very weak attempt to say sorry after we told him he hadn't told apologized, they did comp the meal due to the contamination but the fact is EVERYONE in the restaurant's water had the same butter contamination. I think in order to enjoy this place you should probably live right around the corner. With so many other awesome places to eat, this one probably isn't worth a journey but serves up some pretty decent breakfast foods. It is very reasonably priced and the menu is pretty big. The decor is...er...sparse. There were giant empty walls with one small "novelty" sign on them. They should get a decorator in there, stat. But if that's what keeps the prices down, then that's fine too. Some people complained of poor service in other reviews, but our group was well tended to. The food was really fast, too. My oatmeal was kind of meh, but I was trying to be healthy, and oatmeal IS meh. Also I didn't notice the brown sugar until after I was done eating, dammit. I can vouch for the ham and monster omelette as well. The biscuits were decent. The cinammon apple pancakes smelled AWESOME but I didn't get to try them. Went this morning to meet my dad for brunch, the bf came with for fun. The reason I come to Angela's is because of the atmosphere. It's an old school diner, nothing special, nothing to write home about... but the food and service are consistent and I typically have a good time while I'm there. I think it's because I've been going for so long, that I can't quit.... Good coffee, omelets, hash browns and biscuits. Dad likes the pancakes with a fried egg on top. So we walk in and I feel like I've been transported back into 1960. The first thing that I noticed is that everyone patronizing this diner looked the same. LITERALLY the only diversity in there was brought on by the wait staff. We stayed at the Embassy Suites 2 miles down the road and found this place on Yelp. It got 4 stars and rave reviews for the food. Looking around the diner I couldn't help but ask myself why isn't there an assortment of people around here? What a strange feeling especially in a cosmopolitan city like Dallas and in 2015. Any who, the food was ok. I had the chicken fried steak and my boyfriend the chorizo with scrambled eggs. He told me he liked his meal though it lacked flavor. My chicken fried steak was a tad salty. The hash browns were the most enjoyable in my opinion. Many of the ceiling tiles were stained and that turned me off. No one wants to be shrouded by a ceiling stained with lord knows when they are trying to eat a meal. The server was pleasant, the food unremarkable and the atmosphere a tad bit too stuffy for my liking. read more

Reviews are sometimes funny. It seems many people rate places as though all restaurants strive for the same thing. Like there's a category in the Olympics for "restaurant" or something. "The food here tastes nothing like Charlie Trotter's place in Chicago! one star!" "The decor was uninspired and the coffee mugs were a boring white color. One was even mismached! One star!" Come on people. This place is a cute diner. Cindy, Norma and Angela (3 eponymous cafes here in Dallas fyi out-of-towners) aren't in the Octagon of death to see who survives. Eat here. It's clean. It's yummy. It's diner food. It helps the economy. It helps your tummy. I gauge diners on the preparation of their Frozen-Pre-Cut-Hashbrowns. There are the grease-sponge-of-potato-heap diners (ex. Metro Diner, from what I recall the last, and I mean last, barring some unforeseen circumstances, time I was there) , and then there are diners like Angela's that actually serve edible FPCH's, diners which seem to still appreciate serving simple foods well. I had a Saturday breakfast here with a group of regulars, and I found it very enjoyable. It was crowded and there was a wait from the minute we got there to the minute we left. Pretty good testimony for a diner in a strip mall. The service was good, if a little distracted by the crowds. The migas were fantastic. I loved the idea of diner food with a Tex-Mex twist, and the rest of the menu looked very interesting. In the end, I'm just a sucker for migas (especially with nice big slices of jalapeno). A nice, old-school place with good food at a reasonable price. read more

been going here for almost 10 years now. Service is always great. Best scrambled eggs (kinda sad I have to mention it but so many diners cant scramble an egg..). Their migas is great, the chorizo is wonderful and not greasy. they also have great omeletes. This secret cafe is incredibly popular. One of the better kept secrets of Dallas, it is amazing how busy it gets, yet remains hidden. The food here is good, not great. But its not aiming for great. Its aiming for home-style breakfast food with a Mexican twist. The service is usually very good, despite the chaos, they will seat you as soon as possible (if forgetting to give your table a wipe of previous patrons crums). I mean this in the best possible way, but imagine a great Mexican IHOP, the perfect breakfast food after a rough night out, or a long church service. Not great spot for breakfast, or they were having an off-day today, I am not sure. Iced tea was very weak, sitting next to my water, both in red cups, the lemon was the only clue which it was. Guy next to me returned a cup of coffee for the same reason. I ordered the Angela's Special breakfast: undercooked raw hashbrowns, bone dry chalky pancakes, skinny strips of over done bacon, delicious ham slices and eggs made to order perfectly. Talk about an unfocused kitchen. I give diners a lot of room for errors normally, they are unique after all. I hope this was just a bad day for them. read more

Good morning, Angela's! Breakfast awaits. My parents love this place and bring me here for breakfast almost every visit. It's solid. The bacon is super crispy and the coffee fresh. The hash browns are crispy and never cold in the middle. They had cornbread pancakes as a special, which sounded great. The waitstaff is always nice and accommodating. They appear to have wifi for those who need a working breakfast or lunch. Parking is a breeze. read more

When I first came I was a little skeptical. I tell you what. This place was really good. I ordered the migas with chorizo. A must try. The eggs were made perfect. The waffle was cook to perfection. The do diner food right. This is diner din-din, not fine cuisine. If you understand that and enjoy good diner breakfasts, this is the place. My cholesterol levels have been too healthy and low lately, so I decided to treat myself to the greasy goodness of a diner breakfast and Angela's did not disappoint. Endless coffee, delicious migas with sides of hash browns and corn tortillas were complemented by a disinterested hostess and a busy waitress who was attentive but not chatty. LOVED it! read more

You know what? This place is really not good...gurl. Angela's got lucky because of the location and laziness of Devonshire, Briarwood, and Bluffview residents who really don't want to drive to Lucky's and wait an hour for the real deal. The food is okay-at best. The service is suckie and the entire place is dingy and feels unclean. Those goofy, unattractive, uncomfortable chairs they have are left overs from when it used to be a baaaad Asian restaurant. Hence the sparce and cheesy early 80's art deco vibe. Honestly, I can't believe Angela's is still in business or that normal people still eat there. There are just so many better places around town. Too much honesty? Probably the most useful place to eat in ALL of Park CIties/University Park. The breakfast is damn good and consistent. The know how to cook eggs correctly every time, and their selection for Breakfast, lunch and dinner is huge. The lunch is not spectacular, but not bad at all either. The prices and speed of service are great and I have never sent anything back. Dinner is interesting. After walking into 3 different restaurants on Friday night and not really wanting to wait 30 min for a table ( my fault), I snuck into Angela's and had quite a satisfying meal with no wait at all. Granted, I was probably out-aged by about 30 years by the youngest patron, but it definitely served its purpose. Opens uber early too, which makes for a great breakfast meeting spot during the week before work. Recommend. read more

Just get the bacon and cheese omelette. Seriously. Trust me on this one. And the half a pound of hash browns that come with most breakfast plates are so good you don't even need ketchup to put 'em away. This place has everything possible on the menu so I plan on going back to try the non-breakfast items soon. Will keep you guys updated, obviously. read more

This little restaurant is excellent! They have a wide variety of food options. You can order anything from Tex-Mex style dishes to tasty breakfast options, even gourmet burgers are on the menu. Our waitress was very quick to seat us, and started our orders immediately. It took less than 15 minutes to have our plates delivered. I tried the Tamale Plate with chili con carne, and it was delicious. The food is reasonably priced as well. Lastly, I would say the atmosphere is very friendly. It almost feels like you are at someone's home. I believe this restaurant is a mom and pop shop, or a family owned business. Please, if you are nearby, please go! read more

Place a order for pickup. My Son In Law pickup the order for me and my Mom. My Mom food for her was fine.She had Salmon. I've always order Liver and Onion and never gotten bad good today. Was the worst its nothing like eating bad meat that isn't any good. Today was that day. Bad liver that smelled old and wasn't any good and they didn't offer to make it right after calling them to let the cook know it was bad. So no one else would go through what I did. I have nothing but amazing words of praise for Angela's Cafe!!! Not only does it give me a really old school, authentic diner feel the employees are all so nice and the food is dope for the price. I don't ever have a favorite item on the menu because I like to switch it up, but so far everything I've ordered has been great. Great food portions for the price, close to the mall so I can go walk it off right after. This is one of my go to non pretentious brunch spots, great for conversations about what happened last night with your friends haha. Love this place. The servers are like old friends. They aren't afraid of odd requests, no problem or strange looks when you ask to substitute. Always check the chalk boards for the daily specials, one usually comes with a free slice of pie. The food is dependable and you can tell they actually cooked it themselves, they didn't just heat something up. Roasted chicken, pot roast, tostados, migas, Reubens are all great. There is something for everyone, from old men, to ladies out for lunch, to HP teens, to kids and their moms from the dance academy. Don't let its proximity to the Junior League turn you away. I love this place. Have been several times for breakfast but today I was there for lunch. Wonderful vegetable plate! All the veggies were fresh and well seasoned - the fried okra was the best I'd had in a long time, hot and crispy! The cornbread was great and so was the service. I will definitely be back. Went to Angela's mid-morning on a Saturday. As we were being seated I told our waitress that we were pressed for time because we needed to get to Love Field within 45 minutes of when we got there. She was awesome! She took our orders immediately and we were served very quickly. The food was very well prepared and delicious. The veggie omelette was very good, the fruit was freshly cut, and the retried beans were great. She even gave us iced tea to go. We had plenty of time to enjoy our meal. This is my favorite mid-town breakfast spot with a Mexican food flair. If this is your first time here, you must order one of the omelettes, as they are really made well and taste great. On the side get their homemade biscuit with gravy, it is top-notch. Overall the food has been awesome every-time we have eaten there.
