I would NOT recommend this place. For some odd reason it seems popular to locals. I was visiting relatives who suggested this place because they have patio seating that can accommodate their dog. The menu items are a WIERD food pairings. I ordered Beef Chow fun. What came first was a big bowl of oatmeal!! Strange because in a million years would not eat oatmeal with Beef Chow Fun. Then the beef chow fun arrived. And it was NOT chow fun. It is supposed to be made with wide rice noodles. This place made it with udon noodles. It would've been nice if their menu stated that. So I couldn't eat it given I can't eat wheat. Then even more odd, my order came with a large pork chop. The pork chop was delicious, but again and very strange pairing with the other items in this SINGLE order on the menu. I would not recommend this place. Not an aesthetic location. This Garden Cafe used to be my favorite Hong Kong Cafe that I will visit everytime I visits LA. And the food is normal with minimal service with order, deliver food and then check, that is it. And I check the restaurant is closed at 10pm before I came this time, and I arrived at 9:15pm, but the server and manger told us that they close at 10pm and keep on asking us to order fast as the kitchen will close shortly .., but that is still 45 minutes away from the closing time. If the kitchen doesn't want to cook after 9:15pm, then change your business hour to 9pm instead of 10pm. And don't take any customers after 9pm. Moreover, we ordered several combination meal which all between $18 to $25, and we think it is enough for everyone one,but the server keep saying the dish is very small and keep saying or pushing us to order more dishes and we ended up with a lot of left over. In addition, all other Hong Kong Cafe will offer hot tea for free, but they will charge you few dollars for just a tea which is rediuous. Another deal breaker for this restaurant, they did charged us 18% service on the bill which is not worth at all. I always pay tips base on the service and I usually pay 15% even if just very minimal service and tip more if you provided something that I think you deserve to get more. First , this is not a fine dinner or upscale dinner, and Hong Kong style cafe is just. Fast food restaurant in Hong Kong, they definitely do not deserve for that much tips. Besides they keep on saying they close at 10 pm and we just finished dinner there very quick and left at 10：10pm, so we only stayed there for less than an hour, but they charged me almost like $22 tips. I was craving beef chow fun. So my sister suggested we grab it at Garden Cafe. We have been going to the original one in Monterey Park back in the day and it never disappointed us then. It wasn't busy when we went but the waitress took awhile before we put in our order. I would say that was the only problem. Once that happened everything else went well. I ordered the beef chow fun and sister ordered the Singapore vermicelli. Hands down to the chow fun. Portion size can feed 3-4 adults easily. I like eating at Garden Cafe for Hong Kong style cafe food. There's a large variety of menu options and you'll probably be able to find something for everyone. A few of my favorites are the Baked Fish Filet in Cream Sauce (over rice), Black Pepper Udon, and Chicken Steak. My go-to drink is their refreshing Lemon Iced Tea. The Coffee & English Tea concoction is another good one. Their service is good but the place itself could use a refresh. Not the best ... the tiny lady with short hair was a BRAT... we decided to move our table when we saw someone left because the table they put us in was freezing cold. She gave us an eye & bulged on us saying we gave them a big problem by changing seats? What she didn't know is I also owned a restaurant in OC & our # 1 priority is customer service satisfaction & friendliness.. What big deal is it that ... they have to move the table # in the system.. it won't even take her half a minute if she's familiar with their POS machine.. this is not a big enormous restaurant in case she needs to walk into the kitchen to update. Again ! Their HR needs to educate their staff with good morals and right conducts. Ambience ? Hmm the normal noisy Chinese restaurant nothing special or to wow about. This review is strictly for the service and experience- not the food. Came with my family for dinner last night as my sister was craving their soup. Our waitress told us that it was $2.50 each to add-on the soup, and mentioned that she'll give us a complimentary one since we had ordered three for our party of four. We also ordered other main dishes such as beef rice noodle, tofu, New York steak, and veggies. When the check arrived we noticed that they had charged us $3.50 per soup instead of $2.50, and they also accidentally charged us another dish that was $25, which we had not ordered. When we confronted the waitress about this, she rudely mentioned to us that the dinner price for soup is $1 more, so she basically lied to us. We asked to get another check back to have the costs updated and she never came back. We just sat there and waited for 5-10 minutes and had to reach out to another staff to have them print the receipt for us. Thought it was a bit insensitive and sly that they did that without our awareness. Other than that, food is not too oily which I appreciate. Everything here can be a hit or miss, but overall, I think the price is fair here compared to some places who try to advertise quality with high prices but mediocre at best. I come here for the comfort food and just quick and easy. I usually get the Happy Special option of the New York steak and grill chicken. Most protein for $17.99 + tax = $19.83 without tip. So I usually get it to go and skip the service part. Inside is pretty basic, but it works for the most part. From the food to the ambience and even service, it's as close as you'll get without actually traveling to Hong Kong. I've been a frequent diner ever since they opened this location more than a decade ago. My go to is always the baked pork chop rice. It is as close in taste I can get to what I have in Hong Kong. The dish is missing some pineapple and thicker cut pork chops, but it hits home. My alternate favorite is their wonton noodle soup. The wontons are what differentiates garden cafe from the other restaurants. There's actual shrimp included and the umami taste is on point. The only difference compared to the wonton soups I have in HK is that the dish portion is way bigger. Overall, garden cafe is literally what you'd experience if you were in a modern cafe in Hong Kong. Food is great. The dining area is loud with multiple TVs blasting. Growing up in the SGV, my go to cafe was always Garden Cafe. Ever since moving to AZ 6 years ago, every time we come back to SGV, our first stop is always Garden Cafe. The atmosphere always brings back memories, although service is hit or miss. But that's most Chinese restaurants in the SGV for you. We ordered four favorite dishes and it never disappoints. My partner introduced me to the wonders of chicken steak, and I honestly could eat this every day. I've tried to recreate it on my own, but it is never as good. For one, I think they probably use gigantic chickens because their chicken thighs are much much bigger than what I have at home. The skin on the chicken steak is nice and crispy. The interior is moist, juicy and well-seasoned. I usually get mine with black pepper sauce or mushroom sauce, and it comes with rice or pasta, veggies, and mashed potatoes. And you get so much food: usually a couple big pieces of chicken. All for $15 bucks or so, it is one of the best values I know. I've had a few other dishes here, like oxtail stew, beef chow fun, chicken wings, pork chop. All were serviceable and hit the spot rather well when I was craving those things, but chicken steak is just the best food there (at least for me). Service is generally pretty quick, but it can be intimidating if you are just a dumb single-language English speaker like myself; however, you can just wave down a server when they walk by and they can take your order. The interior of the restaurant is nice and big, and I've never had to wait for the table; however, the parking can be tight. Mixed experience here. The food was good but the service was incredibly lacking, I.e. we felt like we were mostly an afterthought. We got seated immediately, which was promising, but then were mostly overlooked the rest of the evening unless we aggressively flagged someone down. We had also asked for an extra side of sauce for our steak which never arrived. They also have what I joked was the "Cheesecake Factory" of menus, with an extremely diverse variety of options of Asian and American dishes. The prime rib was tasty (~$28) but the mashed potatoes and side veggies were probably frozen/instant veggies or at least tasted like it. Their Yang Chow fried rice was the highlight for me. We also ordered the Choy sum with garlic which was fresh. Location-wise, had a good decent sized parking lot and the building was well lit and had multiple TVs to catch the Olympics. It's he menu is laminated with local ads on one side of pages and lists with photos on the other. The mishmash of styles is on display with many combos of chopsticks spoons forks and knives set out! You can eat individual meals or get larger dishes to share. There are also specials on a yellow happy menu. They are more combos with smaller portions for lunch and dinner but if you ask there's really no time restriction. We got quickly the pork cutlet curry with pasta and a French style beef cube with grilled cod and rice. Both came with soup option; we got tomato (more minestrone style) because they were out of creamy Chinese style. The beef came out later but warm maybe they forgot. With such a large menu they must mix and match many pre-prepared dishes. They were quick to buss the dishes but had to call them to get the check. If you're looking for a place that will serve a little bit of everything, then here you go. Third, the portions are big! We got the meat combo plate, the seafood pasta, and the chicken and rice. I get a little emotional when I think of Garden Cafe. The original one in Alhambra has been my go-to Hong- Kongnese cafe since high school! When this one in Arcadia opened almost 10 years ago (or is it 12 years? ) I was overjoyed ! There are so many dishes I like at this place. I equate their menu to the menu at CheeseCake Factory or Denny's. There are just pages after pages of good-looking western/Chinese, western and Chinese dishes. There's something for everyone! Lately my favorite dishes are the sizzling XO beef cube and shrimp udon and the minced beef and egg over rice plate. The stir fry udon served on a sizzling plate is hot, savory, flavorful and simply delicious. When I am craving sauce over rice, I get the minced beef rice plate because every bite is so satisfying with the creamy and sweet soy sauce flavored minced beef in every spoonful. And if you don't mind having a running yolk, get the egg cooked medium and the running egg yolk mixed with the sweet savory sauce over rice is perfection. My kids love their kids meals, and also their club sandwich and bolognese. The beef and vegetable tomato soup and the cream and corn soup used to be complimentary. Post COVID, Now each soup is $2 per small bowl. Our server was generous today and offered us the soup on the house! I was thankful for that because that's how every Garden Cafe experience always started was with the complimentary soups after you placed your order. Their salmon salad, chicken wings, red bean and condensed milk over ice, ice lemon water, Singaporean rice noodles, congee, chicken and shrimp over rice in a tomato and cream sauce are all my favorites!
