Over the weekend I kept on dreaming about a croissant I had recently. It was a breakfast sandwich that kept on haunting my mind since I had it. A supervisor at work had brought some to celebrate his 15th year with the office. The celebration soon was forgotten, but the food stayed in my mind I just had to discover this place myself. After getting off the train I promised myself I would find this place and give it a try. Of course, Yelp had been my ever faithful accomplice in my new adventure. My quick search yielded this location which was conveniently just outside the train station I get off to go to work. Despite the number of homeless people hanging out in front of the store, I soon found a sign saying they would be open at 8 a.m. I was too early.... Not to worry. It's only a block and a half away from work, I told myself. I shall return when I go for my morning cup of joe . The plan was set. In the meantime, while I killed time at my desk, I went through their menu and found that I would have ordered at least one of everything for my Monday morning breakfast to start the week out. Epic plan... When 8a.m. came, I found a companion who also wanted to try this place and boy, were we in for a treat! The doors were open and upon entering you are greeted by a sterile white environment and the scent of freshly baked pastries and coffee. The experience didn't stop there though. The staff greeted us with the same warmth as someone welcoming you into their kitchen. The choices available are mind boggling. I wanted everything. Then reality set in. This is my first visit and there WILL be other times. So I made the best choice I could make and, trust me. No regrets. I love Ariscault but getting to the one on Arguello is a pain. Parking and long lines suck. This Tenderloin location rocks! No line (albeit the block it's located seems to have a homeless encampment) and a bigger selection of goodies. The baguette is great. The bacon & onion quiche has redefined quiche for me. Best ever. Quiche is available only on McAlister. Quiches sell out early. Mushroon quiche is also a good option. All of their pastries are yummy and better than I've had in Paris' patisseries. McAlister also has limited seating which Arguello only offers take out. Minus is the location in the Tenderloin but 3 SFPD were outside and had to remove a homeless person peacefully. Parking is scarce so consider garage or public transportation. I've only tried the kouign amann, ham/cheese croissant and chocolate cookie. As much as I liked everything I tried I think B Patisserie is still my favorite for Kouign Amann. Kouign Amann - I like the chewy texture of the sugar on the outside of the bread. Flavor was good but different from the one I've been used to which is from B Parisserie. But I prefer this better than Jane the bakery. Ham and cheese croissant- The croissant itself is wonderful. Don't know what the after taste is from the ham though. Might just be some spice I am not used to :) Choco cookie - Pretty good size. Nice and chewy but taste like any other chocolate cookie (not chips ahoy which I also think is yummy in its own way) but freshly baked cookie. Give them a try! They are located in a shady area but since covid downtown has been worse. Most of the people don't really bother you. If you go on weds the farmers market is there too. This review is for the location in the Tenderloin area. Since it is in this area of SF, I didn't feel the safest walking here. Just remember to be cautious. I went here on a Wednesday morning and there was no line and plenty of room to sit inside the cafe. I went here because of all the positive yelp reviews for the croissants and I was eager to see if it lived up to the hype. There were so many choices of croissants and other baked goods but since I was craving something savory, I decided to get the ham and cheese croissant. The actual croissant pastry was perfectly flaky. However, I've tried other ham and cheese croissants in SF that were better (I love the one from Jane the bakery). Unlike the one from Jane the bakery, the one at arsicault was cold and did not taste fresh even though I went there in the morning. There was also very little filling. Perhaps the other sweet croissants would be a better choice. Overall, it was a solid croissant, but not the best and I would definitely expect it to be more fresh. read more

I love the other location of arsicault so I decided to check this one out since it was closer to where I was staying and accessible by metro. I was also intrigued by the blackberry hazelnut croissant that is unique to this location only! My first mistake was not coming at the beginning of the day as many items were unfortunately sold out (I came just after lunch time on a weekday). Seems like the other location may be more popular and they are baking fresh throughout the day, whereas this location has a limited supply and once they're out it's over. I got the last 2 blackberry hazelnut croissants, along with the last 3 almond croissants. Unfortunately they were all sold out of ham and cheese croissants (my other favorite). The blackberry hazelnut croissant was amazing - possibly my new favorite but hard to say which such stiff competition from the amazing almond croissant. Also I didn't taste it warm since I came later in the day. I think the quality is as good as original location but wasn't as fresh as it wasn't straight out of the oven. I was a little put off by the crowds of homeless people while walking from the metro stop to the bakery so maybe next time Id go with a friend. read more

Sublime. In five days, I've been there four times. (Gotta try everything before Lent.) The plain croissant is everything a croissant should be: crisply and flaky outside, light and delicately springy inside, with a buttery goodness that prevents your mouth from stopping rapid consumption. The almond croissant (and the chocolate almond, for that matter) are as decadent as they come. How they manage to keep the dough crispy with such richness happening inside is almost magical. If you like a hint of booze, you will be happy with this croissant. But the chocolate croissant is the shining star. Save your appetite and your calories: it's a whopper. As light as air, though, so you don't feel quite as guilty. The dough, of course, is excellent, just like with the other pastries, but the chocolate is next-level. How does it remain melted even as the croissant cools? It's so pure and good, it must come from heaven. Thank you, Arsicault, for taking a chance on our neighborhood. Oh, and the staff are friendly, fun, and professional. What more could you ask for. Prices? Not bad. I think $3.75 for plain and $4.75 for chocolate. Drip coffee is $2.50. Hard to beat. read more

Every time I am in SF I always make a trip to Arsicault. They have the best croissants ever. The lamination is on point. It leads to viennoiserie with millions of layers! I particularly like going to the McAllister location because they have the Blackberry Almond Croissant. It's the perfect balance of tartness and sweet.
