If you follow, you know I love AM. But even champs have off days. Yesterday was one of them. Ordered seafood tofu soup, braised tofu w/veggies, and chicken veg pan fried noodles. Pretty sure we got seafood veggie soup as it had no tofu. Then the braised tofu veggies had like only 5-6 pieces of tofu in the whole container. Noodles were fine. I'll be honest and say I wasn't sure what to expect frm this little place. They had tables blocking the entrance for you to order and pay but it was effective. We were in town, felt like eating Chinese food and heard about their roasted meats so decided to give it a try. So many selections to choose from so I asked the worker there and he suggested the 4 meats that I could choose from over rice. The choices were Roast Duck, Roast Pork, Cold Ginger Chicken and Char Siu. I ordered all 4...2 in each plate so we could taste all. We liked the Roast Pork and Cold Ginger Chicken...both were tasty but I thought here was more fat than meat for the Roast Pork. I did like the crispy skin...yum! As for the other 2 meats, there was more bone than meat for the Roast Duck as expected but it was tasty. The Char Siu had a different texture that I'm not used to so I didn't care for it...don't think I'd order this again. Spoke to a friend about this place...she recommended the Honey Roasted Spareribs with a side of Choi sum so I'll try that next and other selections! A 1-star review says "Not good" per Yelp. It was NOT GOOD. I'm not sure what happened since the last time I visited Asian Mix. New owners? New chef? Main chef on vacation? Changed business practices and decided efficiency and low cost over quality and time? Everyone working there were not the same people since my last visit. I wish I checked some of the recent reviews before I came here, especially the one from Akemi O. with the photo of the excess amount of oil in the fried noodles! That was the experience I got from the Country Style Rice Noodle. It was a generous amount, but this made me sick for two days. The noodles were oily! The dish was felt and ate like it was all premade, mixed around, dumped some reused oil, warmed, and just sits in a pan. NOTHING felt like it touched a wok. Zero wok heat, no char on anything--not even the slightest. The noodles were still a little hard, onions were bright white, bell peppers ate raw, and the char siu was just sliced in there, and also plenty of oil at the bottom of the box. Yikes! Also ordered the Chicken with Vegetables. I have never seen it served this way before. It's like they just put the vegetables on the bottom of the box and poured chicken on top of it. You can obviously tell by the clumped-up corn starch/water mixture around the dish. The sauce on the chicken stuck together while the bottom of the box was watery from the vegetables. Taste was weird. Chicken was bland and had a weird texture. Vegetables were okay, but on the hard side. The prices have gone up quite often recently too. It used to be very affordable as it was only a takeout place. Now it's almost the same price, or even more expensive than at a sit-down restaurant. Sigh, I'd like to know what happened. The staff are not necessarily rude..just efficiently brusque ensuring everyone orders, pays and picks up. There is no seating to enjoy your meal. People seem to order meals for dinner or lunch. Prices are reasonable and they give a good amount of food. I do honestly feel that the food can be hit or miss. We recently ordered beef chow fun and a garlic eggplant tofu dish. In the past, I ordered à la carte -- a half or whole roast duck, an order of fried rice, a container of soup, etc. But doing it that way, I either eat more than usual in one sitting, or end up with leftovers. I only recently learned that Asian Mix also offers combo plates. Maybe because it's Easter Sunday, I felt the urge to do something different. I arrived early, right at opening. There was just one group ahead of me. When my turn came, I asked how the combos work, and the gentleman explained that I could choose which roast meats I wanted, and the combo would come with rice and vegetables. I chose roast duck and roast pork -- both of which I hadn't had in a while. Before long, a line started to form and things quickly got busy. I was surprised how soon they called my number. The pork chops are flavored with garlic, salt, peppers, and mildly hot red peppers cooked quite nicely where the outside is somewhat crispy and the inside is soft and still flavorful. And the fried rice complements the savory bites of the pork chops quite nicely. It's located across of T-Mobile right under the big Safeway on S. Beretania St. There's a parking garage with ample stalls. I never have any trouble finding parking here. The restaurant used to have dining tables and chairs but since COVID, they've become and continue to be a takeout shop. At times, I always see a line of people waiting for their orders, indicating how popular this shop is. I always try to make a phone call order for their whole roast duck as they seem to sell out around late afternoon without a phone order (another indication that their roast duck is very good). It could be tricky calling as they could be very busy, but my family and I would continue to try call to reserve a duck. The reason why we keep coming back is because of the flavor and juiciness of the duck. There are some shops that sell roast duck where they're really dry, enhancing the unique flavor of duck that could taste either great or bad depending on your taste buds. However, that's not the case at this shop. The duck was always juicy with a nice fattiness to it. There was always a good amount of meat on the ducks we would get. YUM. I love their Roast Duck and eat it at least every 2 weeks. It is flavored the best with enough seasoning, but not too much. I like Sandy's in Chinatown, too, but sometimes the duck skin has too much of one particular spice that overpowers the meat. It has been very reliably good here over the years and whenever we have a family potluck we bring a medium pan of chow fun over and it is a hit with not only the kids but the rest of our family in Kailua and they always ask, "Is this from Asian Mix?' This review is long overdue. I remember the owner from Panda Cuisine many years ago. My mother always had our family dinners and celebrations there. We were sad when Panda Cuisine closed. I have been going to Asian Mix since they first opened. Pre-pandemic, they had a hot food buffet, where you could choose 2-3 choice entree with rice or noodles. I miss that. The food was always so good. Their roasted meats are also available. Asian Mix is known to have one of the best Roast Ducks in Honolulu. I have tasted almost everything on the menu here. The Roast Duck, Char Siu, Crispy Skin Chicken, Pot Roast Chicken, Gon Lo Mein are just a few of my favorites. Portions are generous and the food is always prepared well. The bbq meats are really what you gotta get here. They run out pretty regularly so its best to call in early in the day to place an order! I came here based on a photo of some delicious looking food! I asked the woman if there was a trio of meats, and I even showed her the picture. She was kinda gruff, "we only have double meat, not trio but you can add char siu for $5." So that's what I did.
