I really wanted to like this place since people keep telling me to go here. One great thing is that it is a great choice to eat before seeing a show at the Ahmanson or Disney Hall since its really close by and there aren't a lot of affordable options in the area that are open until 8pm. My big disappointment was that my dish lacked flavor. I got the lemongrass fish. I liked the texture of the fish but it desperately needed more flavor. I squeezed the one lemon wedge they gave me onto it which helped but it needed like 3 more. It was a very sizable dish for $21. I couldn't finish it all and after the meal the waitress said its really big and more of a family style dish. My friend's Curried Rice was also huge and had some tasty bits but wasn't as tasty all over as hoped The stand out 5/5 was the Salt and Peppered Shrimp. Great texture and flavor. Service was okay. ordered their beef and chicken pho for takeout along with the yuca fries. the broth was very good, very herby and tasted like the real deal; no plain veggie broth bs. the protein for both pho was abundant, the chicken was ehh but also never had great vegan chicken unless it was fried lol and the beef balls were legit but could only eat a few before getting tired of it. the yuca were also skinny and some pieces were like just not even whole pieces like just fried yuca skin or something idk wasn't a fan and i love yuca. i also asked for every sauce they had available and they only gave me the chili paste which was disappointing but it did add to the soup. also, i wish the toppings for the pho came separate and not already in the bowl so i can add into it instead of taking things off. idk if i'll be back to try other things but maybe.. read more

My new favorite restaurant! Visited Au Lac, after having it on my list of places to try for a few weeks, and it did not disappoint. We tried the chocoholic shake, spicy calamari, siu mai dumplings, yucca fries and kale seaweed salad. Everything was healthy yet extremely delicious; there were other seemingly delicious dishes on tables nearby that we gave to come back to try. There was a decent amount of people for an early Saturday afternoon. The space was really cute (and centrally located) with R&B music setting the vibe. The wait staff was also great. I had lunch here yesterday and LOVED it!!! I love a good Bánh Mì, and this place nailed it. The juice mixes were really good too. I would have liked to try one of the cool "elixirs" on the menu, but the server wasn't sure exactly which adaptogens they contained, and there are certain adaptogens I can't take, so I wasn't able to risk it. However the fantastic "gold juice" I had instead was delicious. Orange, carrot, ginger, and turmeric all in perfect proportion. Oh and this is so random but don't forget to grab one of the little candies on your way out because they are not mints. My first time trying vegan Vietnamese food, and I loved it. I had the soy chicken pho, which was well seasoned and had a delicious broth. As long as you don't expect the soy chicken to taste like chicken, this is delicious. I also had the egg rolls, which were freshly cooked, piping hot, and absolutely yummy. I'm not vegan, but my friend and I came by "mistake" for dinner prior to a show at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. We were pleasantly surprised, and I think we found our new spot pre-shows! The plaza has other businesses, but nothing besides Au Lac and Subway were open past 6pm in terms of food options. For the appetizer, we ordered the "shrimp." This was SO SO good. If I didn't know it was vegan, I would have thought I was having real shrimp. The texture is close! The veggies are deep fried in a very specific flour and now I can't recall what she said. My ravioli rosa was also good and filling. I shared my plate w my friend. Sadly I didn't get a picture of his garlic basil noodles. We shared this plate as well. You can definitely taste the garlic and basil! I actually enjoyed his plate more than mine. They have a parking garage behind the plaza at $10 cash. There is plenty of places to sit. Everything is so I thought off, including partitions so you can have privacy. Definitely go for the curry rice, which is so amazing. The portions are extremely huge for one person and so the price is really reasonable .. even the water tastes wonderful with the mint and cucumber. My husband and I visit Au Lac every time he has work in LA requiring an overnight stay. SInce the restaurant began closing on Mondays, he always makes sure not to schedule his jobs for Tuesday...that's how much we enjoy this venue. We've been dining here for many years. We can't resist the Big Thanini Roll every time because of the delight to our taste buds. We always order extra soy sauce because using too much is frowned upon in some cuisines, but we love what it adds to the dish. Even though we only visit 3 or 4 times a year, our regular server remembers that we do this every time. We no longer have to ask. We've been happy with everything else we've tried from the menu--the salt and pepper shrimp is as great as the other reviewers claim, the octopus is amazing and fun to imagine (we don't eat real octopus), the lemongrass fish and spicy calamari are treats. Many of the soups are very tasty. The server has helped us decide which soups to try with great descriptions and opinions based on our comments. The water at your table will be fresh--always infused with a combination of fruits and/or veggies, and left in a pitcher for easy access. If we don't finish it, I always have my travel cup handy to take the rest home. It's too good to waste. The service isn't always as attentive as some other restaurants throughout the meal, but often it is. We have no complaints as we always get what we need. Some of the booths on both sides of the room are tucked away nicely in corners for privacy. We tend to get those without asking when they're available. The room is divided in two by a wall which helps to dampen any noise and provide a better dining experience. We don't eat Vietnamese food as a rule. We just haven't made ourselves familiar with it yet, so I can't compare this food to Vietnamese cuisine. Other reviewers who've given lower ratings have written comparisons. We're also not vegan or vegetarian. We don't eat red meat or pork. If I had the time and talent to prepare our meals in this way, I would switch to vegan in a heartbeat. In my opinion, Au Lac food is far tastier, and this lovely LA venue offers a more unique dining experience than most other restaurants we frequent. It's always a special delight to dine here. Hands down the BEST vegan food I have ever eaten...SOooo flavorful and fresh. Every single dish was amazing, and the portions were huge. I went during their lunch time, and they offered a variety of specials, like BOGO, which allowed us to explore even more items. The food was bright and extremely fresh. My group could not stop raving about our food. The presentations were beautiful! (This was lunch time, too). I have had vegan dishes many times over, and this hidden gem tops the chart. The chef has truly mastered the art of marrying flavors that compliment each other and create such a palette pleasing experience. The staff was amazing and super helpful with recommendations. The calamari was disgusting along with that rice on the plate, literally no flavor. The customer service was just okay. Seemed like the young lady was more concerned about eating lunch herself with a friend that had met her there. It wasn't a problem but she brought the check and we weren't even finished eating which was a bit rude and when we needed stuff we had to ask the guy behind the bar. I'd still return though. My favorite place to eat in downtown LA. Parking underground for $12 cash. It cost about $40-50 a person to eat well here. Not a bad price for the quality. Food is really creative and the vibe is super chill. It's hardly ever packed when I've gone and I appreciate that. Service is always on point. Love the vegan/dairyfree/gluten free options! The red juice is everything. And the "fried octopus" chefs kiss! Fried shimp and kale salads are ok. I'd like to try something else next time though. Found this restaurant through Yelp and it did not disappoint. My friend was visiting DTLA and since she's vegan, I decided to look on Yelp for plant-based restaurants and came across this place. Upon entering, you would not expect this place to serve Vietnamese food since it felt so modern and American. My friend and I ordered an appetizer and two main meals. 1) BBQ Pork Rolls: 7/10 Genuinely shocked that this was all vegan! The "pork" tasted exactly like real meat and the peanut sauce really enhanced the flavor of this dish. The only con was that the ingredients inside the rice paper roll kept following apart so it was hard to chew it as a whole. But overall, the crunchiness from the cucumber and carrots balanced the "pork" well. 2) Pandan Waffles: 1/10 Honestly even though it looked amazing, it was so bitter. Really ruined my taste pallet and had to drink lots of water to take away that bitterness. When I asked the waiter about this, he merely said that it's supposed to taste like this! But my friend mentioned that she's had Pandan waffles before and they were not this bitter. The only good thing about this dish was the fried jackfruit chips they gave... do NOT get the Pandan waffles when you come here, your tastebuds will not thank you. 3) Garlic Basil Noodles: 10/10 So glad I ordered this dish as it was a very popular item on Yelp. Although deceivingly simple, the sauces complemented each other well. The garlic and basil really made this dish shine as the noodles were just plain spaghetti noodles chopped up. The "sausage" on the other hand didn't really taste that good and I felt like it could have been omitted from this dish. I definitely would eat this again if I came back. Overall, this place was pretty good. My only wish is when my friend and I expressed our thoughts about the Pandan waffle, it would have been nice if the waiter offered to give us another dish or bring this concern up to management but that didn't happen. read more

I've been looking for a good vegan option for shrimp and everything has failed me thus far, until I tried their salt and pepper shrimp. Got to be sorcery. Look no further for your seafood fix. The pesto stuffed mushrooms were phenomenal and bursting with so much flavor. The octopus was giving like a flash fried flavored chicken more than anything, but it's also a great dish.
