Great customer service! Everybody there was so sweet and friendly. Food was delicious! We usually go to the mill valley location which is more of a grab and go but this location is perfect for a sit down lunch date!

It's been several years since I wrote a review on Avatar's, and I figured it was time that I update my thoughts. The flavors of the entrees continue to be incredible. The proteins are cooked well, and the vegetables still have a bit of crunch -- which I love because I cannot stand soggy vegetables. Service continues to be excellent. The interior is well decorated and inviting. There is indoor and outdoor seating depending on your preference and the weather. While there is a menu you can order from, you can also ask the owner to make you a dish based on the protein, veggies, and spice level you would like. A few logistic things: There's a free parking lot, and you can order food to pick up ahead of time.

Neat little spot! Owner was very welcoming and accommodating, including allowing me to mix and match the proteins in my enchiladas! Ended up eating here two days in a row, including bringing a group of friends who were recording at a nearby record studio the following day. Interesting menu choices, so everyone should be able to find something they enjoy!

    Perfect samosas!

Honestly, Avatar's is my husband and I's favorite Indian(ish) restaurant in the Bay Area. Their samosas are always so delicious and perfectly crispy on the outside with amazing sauces, and we love getting their off-menu basmati rice dishes with a combo of sea bass and prawn. They don't use oil, dairy, gluten, and my body always feels so clear and clean after I eat here! There's so much love in the food. Highly, highly recommend!

Delicious spot for a punjabi burrito! The whole wheat wrap was not too thick and there was a nice ratio of curry meat, pickled vegetables and rice. The curry itself was great - the tamarind really comes through giving the sweet and tangy flavor, very enjoyable.

Food is amazing with a twist. We ordered curried rock shrimp, seasonal mixed vegetables with fish, dal curry and home made pasta for kids. The staff is nice. Helped us with everything the kids needed. Nice cozy restaurant on the way to San Francisco. Definitely recommend as I'll be going again.

"Rock Shrimp in Fresh Chutney" but its small white shrimp which is misleading and fraudulent
    Dietrich K.

Pains me to give them this rating, the owner here is very nice, however he seems reluctant to change for bad items and mistakes. The other day I ordered 2 mango lassis and a rock shrimp chutney. Mango Lassis were amazing, smooth, rich, and creamy. However the rock shrimp were not rock shrimp. They were sad tiny little bay shrimp instead. I let him know the next day and after refusing a refund I got replacement items, another 2 mango lassis and samosa chaat. On top of this he showed me the "rock shrimp" they use, which turned out to be a frozen bag of white shrimp. I advised him to fix it on the menu but not sure he will do that. When i got home and tastes the new mango lassis, i noticed a drastic difference from yesterdays. Todays was very sour and bad and I wont risk getting sick on bad yogurt. I called him to let him know first but he just said thats how it is. So if how it is, is misleading customers and serving food/drinks that can get people sick, then I have to advise anyone to either go somewhere else or be very critical of things you eat here for your safety.

Empty plates = happy hearts! Avatar in Sausalito is a flavor explosion you don't want to miss. No menu needed--just tell Ashok Kumar what you're craving, and he'll create magic. A true fusion gem!

Great food and service! Very warm, welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommend. The menu is Punjabi fusion. There are Mexican fusion dishes, like the Punjabi enchiladas. These are very popular and quite good. You can choose almost any kind of meat or veggie (except pork), and you can specify how spicy you like it. We chose spicy shrimp, and they were delicious! We also split the yoghurt chicken, which came out looking more like a mole or a curry because of the cashew mango chutney sauce. The chicken was incredibly tender and delicious. The veggies were wonderful. Both dishes came with basmati rice with peas. So soft and fluffy, with a hint of saffron. Loved it! Also, we started with samosas, which were crunchy on the outside, filled with tasty potatoes and peas on the inside. So good! My friend and I ordered sabe cocktails, which was the only thing we did not love. Ashok (the owner) came to greet us and answered all our questions. While we considered what to order, Ashok was chatting away with locals who have been coming to Avatar's for years. He seemed to know their families and favorite foods. So nice to see! Parking is easy to find in the lot, especially when Bank of Marin is closed. Very cozy seat set up, mostly tables for two. Overall, enjoyed this place and will be coming back. I wish I had discovered this place much sooner.

This place is so much more than your average Indian restaurant! As you drive into the north side of Sausalito, you'll find Avatar on Bridgeway. There's a big parking lot patio with picnic tables to eat at this family-run location. It has been serving up comforting favorites for over 30 years--with a refreshingly creative twist. Where else can you find Indian enchiladas on the menu? I love that they've kept the classics while also adding a progressive local touch. The soup is often lentil and always vegan, The appetizers are full of flavor, and the curries? Absolutely delicious. It's always a hit for me.

A good go-to in downtown Sausalito, especially if you're into spicy, bold flavors. The portions are decently sized. Staff is friendly and helpful. *SERVICE* We didn't have a reservation but were warmly welcomed by the staff and seated immediately upon our arrival. They checked on us often and were quick to clear our plates as we ate. *FOOD* We had a party of 2. Everything sounded good so we decided to share everything. I generally like spiciness and found mild to be the right heat level. - Soup du jour (soup of the day): Lentil soup was one of the better ones I've had at a restaurant! It was simple but very flavorful. All their soups are vegetarian. It came with a side of paratha bread, which was gluten-free. - New Zealand Lamb Curry: This was my favorite dish. It was tender and flavorful, with hints of spice and citrus/tangy. Served with a side of rice that complimented the meat really well. - Jerk Chicken Enchiladas: Really tasty as well! Had tons of flavor. I enjoyed the fusion approach. Also came with a side of rice. - Mango Lassi: I'm always a fan, and this one did not disappoint! They also had a rose petal flavored one. *PARKING* Plenty of parking in a lot that's shared with a few other businesses including Bank of Marin. *AMBIANCE* The restaurant has diner vibes. You can probably fit ~50-60 people in there comfortably. The tables are amply spaced, so even if it was full, it won't feel too tight. They also have a decently sized outdoor space.

    Pumpkin Crab Enchiladas

I had a lovely lunch with an old friend at Avatar. We were warmly greeted by the owner and seated by the window. Our foodie adventure began with gluten free Samosas that came with a yogurt sauce. Delicious. Then we got the warm spinach salad with giant prawns in garlic butter. The salad was divine. After that we split the pumpkin crab Punjab enchiladas with long grain basmati rice in saffron. My old favorite. We washed it all down with a Chai Latte and a mango shake. Dessert was a unique ice cream tart covered in pistachios and sitting in a raspberry sauce. It went quick. Everything was fresh, superb, and memorable. I love the cozy atmosphere and the stellar service. This is still one of the best restaurants in Marin. The food is interesting and tasty. There is an elegance and proper table service here. I always leave feeling good. Highly recommend.

A close friend of mine suggested Avatar's for dinner when we were in the area as she has a number of dietary challenges and they have a very accommodating menu. The staff was very nice and service was fast and friendly. If you like spicy food this is the place for you. I love and eat spicy food regularly but I asked for Medium hot as a gauge, and this was pretty high on the heat level. So err on the side of caution if you're not a spicy food lover. Everything was very good and I would stop in again if I was in the area. Parking was right in front and very easy.

Meat trio over basmati, veggies look so good, and the curry..oh my

The flavors were authentic and flavorful without being overly Americanized. The pork curry was absolutely delicious and is definitely a must-order. I also got the tea leaf salad and immediately wished I had ordered the large because you can never have enough tea leaf salad. The palata was a great starter -- flaky, warm, and exactly what you'd want. The miso black cod was another standout. The broth it was simmered in was incredibly flavorful, and the fish was perfectly cooked. The garlic noodles were also done really well with the right noodles and great flavor -- honestly better than some places known specifically for garlic noodles. And of course, the coconut rice is always worth ordering. We skipped dessert since nothing really stood out, but I would love to see them add more traditional Burmese desserts like faluda in the future. Parking wasn't too difficult, especially if you circle around the back neighborhood area. The wait was reasonable, the outdoor patio seating was nice, and the service was attentive throughout the meal. Definitely a spot I'd come back to when craving Burmese food.

When the wait would have possibly gone longer than the 15-20 that she quoted, she made sure to let us know and why. We felt as if we personally mattered and were not just covers needing to be sat. She offered to get us drinks and gave us menus to peruse while we waited. The kitchen was going at full throttle. Togo orders were flying out the door and more were lining up. It's located downtown next to the movie theater, if you're facing the theater, it's on the right-hand side. There was a sign on the door saying cash-only and no dine-in. I had cash and we were planning to take it to-go anyway, so that part didn't bother us. But oh my goodness... the staff needs improvement. Please address it ASAP. The vibe was not welcoming at all and felt very unprofessional. I could hear screaming and shouting coming from the kitchen from one of the younger girls, who honestly looked pretty mean. She was also taking orders. Thankfully, she wasn't the one who helped us, another girl took our order. Their POS was down and they said they accepted cash or Zelle, so we paid with Zelle. The girl told me, "Show it to me when you pay it," which I did. THANK GOODNESS I paid with Zelle. (I'll get to that). We ordered two salt & pepper wings and an order of garlic noodles to-go. The noodles came out first, so we sat down to wait for the wings. I noticed there were people dining in, so I guess the "no dine-in" sign wasn't accurate. When our wings were ready, we went up to grab them. The girl who took our order loudly asked in a rude tone, "DID YOU PAY?" It was embarrassing because everyone heard, and could've been handled so differently. I told her yes and pulled up the Zelle confirmation, the SAME one she had asked me earlier to show her. She clearly forgot and didn't make a note of it. Honestly, I can't imagine if I had paid cash. I wouldn't have had a receipt or any proof. So if you go here and their machines are down again... pay with Zelle. While we were there, I noticed a mother and daughter who had been waiting even before we arrived and still had no food. When we went up to get our wings, the daughter walked up to the counter very upset and said, "Give me back my money. We've been here for an hour and we were here before them." That pretty much confirmed everything about how chaotic things were. It felt like a total zoo in there. The system for handling orders and payments definitely needs work, especially with cash transactions. The tables were also dirty and could've used some attention. Additionally, the girl screaming in the kitchen shouldn't have happened. The wings? Still delicious. But the service and organization at this location really took away from the experience. The only parking available was at the garage across the street.

My wife and I met another couple at Boo Koo. We had tickets to theatre nearby (a good walk after…read moredining). It was a casual lunch, right for the occasion. Our friends recommended it. They've been there often, it seems. I'd be pleased to join them there again. We had a pho and a noodle dish. We split the shishito peppers. My wife prefers less spicy. I'm the opposite. We order calibrated for her. They did fine. My wife remarked afterward it was "Americanized." That is true. It's not necessarily bad. It isn't just Asian cuisines; it's Italian too, and I'd bet just about every other tradition. There is a distinct American version, which an historian could figure out the relationship to the original for, for any "ethnic" dish you'll encounter stateside. Service was brisk. We finished without any concern about making our show.

The music was good, the vibe was nice, but the food took very long to be ready. They said about 15 minutes but was nearly 40, and it was for spring rolls and soup. Giving 4 stars because the food was good, the place was a cool spot, it was just the wait (and incorrect wait time mostly) that was a 2-3 star. Had we known, we would've left and come back and had a more positive overall experience. Worth getting the food, not sure if the wait time is always an issue as only tried once on a trip.
