This is without doubt, the best Indian restaurant I have been to in the United States. I am Desi and have been to 48 states. Like most South Asian Americans, I enjoy trying Indian restaurants wherever I go. My god, so happy my fiancée and I took a chance at this great spot. Why is Avatar's so good? First, the service was phenomenal. Everyone we interacted with including the owner (Ashok, I believe) was positive and professional. This also shows us what we have known for awhile - Indian restaurant owners mostly suck. But Ashok took the time to talk to us about his food, unique menu, and philosophy, which influences the dishes. Second, everything we ate just melted in our mouth. The lamb Rogan Josh was sublime and I usually don't eat much lamb or goat, but this dish restored my faith in Desi food (which has become trite and boring through much of the U.S.) Ashok also has a special dessert - the only one he offers - that melds American and Indian flavors into a kulfi/cake/hybrid. Will surely return (though we did not even try the hybrid Mexican food). read more

I can't write a good review for Avatar's because of the poor customer service and the lack of "giving a s---" for the customer's time, especially when it comes to getting water service, ordering/wait service, and most importantly, paying the bill so we may leave to make our other appointment--which we missed because the owner couldn't care enough to give us our bill. I will be forward in that the food is decent. The food isn't bad at all. But even if the food being rather decent, the service is paltry, disturbing, in comparison. From our observation, it seems as if the owner is passionate about this restaurant, which is great. But the owner is too passionate about this restaurant, and it shows... in a negative way. For example, after setting our menu down and ready to order, the Owner noticed us, but was so engrossed in his conversation with another table explaining how this would be the best food of their lives. He then went on to discuss the various menu options, drinks options, even made suggestions. He's a great talker and provided great context, but you have two other tables waiting to order. We even flagged a wait staff down and he looked at us but refused to come to our table, avoiding us like the plague. Why? Another example, we finished the water in our cups. We flagged down the wait staff for water, but because they were so shy to give us eye contact, it look an absurdly long time for us to get any water refilled. The final example is when we were ready to leave. We looked around for minutes to ask for our check. With no one really waiting any tables, we tried to flag down the one worker that brought us our water. He avoided eye contact with us most of the time, but he really couldn't avoid us vocally asking for our check. He nodded and went inside. 9 minutes later, he comes out cleaning tables, but without our check. We look at him and ask him again. He nods and runs back inside. 7 minutes later, he comes out cleaning tables, but without our check... again. At this point, I stand up, asking him again where our check is. He walks in again and this time, he doesn't come out. We wait another 11 minutes and this time I walk into the restaurant and look for the owner. He's schmoozing away, again, at a table explaining the dishes. I walk up to the register and wait 3 minutes until he comes up to the register to start looking for our ticket. This guy hasn't even started with our check. The kicker is that after I stood at the register, he then proceeded to process our check and overcharged us. He over charged us on the Samosa. Because we had a table of 3 people and the Samosa order is two (which was not on the menu and he never asked us), he decided to charge us 1.5 order, without asking us or confirming with us. Very sleazy business practice. We paid our bill and we left. We will not be visiting and we cannot recommend this place to anyone else. I'm happy that there are so many good reviews because maybe my incident was just an error, but my incident was bad enough where I would not even think of giving this place a second chance. And my incident was bad enough where I needed to post this review. It seems as if the Owner doesn't trust any of his employees or workers to handle ordering or producing checks to the customers. It also seems as if the Owner doesn't care about my time, my wife's time, or my sister's time. On our way back from Marin, while searching for Indian food, we stumbled upon this place and decided to give it a shot. The place has both outdoor and indoor seating with patio heaters on the outside. It was cloudy, windy and cold (typical SF summer) so we decided to seat ourselves indoors. The staff was friendly and welcoming. We got our seats in hardly anytime. The menu looked enticing with fish, lamb (from New Zealand it seems), chicken and vegetables. We decided to order the traditional Indian starters: Samosa, chai and papad. It all started going a bit downhill from there. The papad was microwaved and was uncooked at the edges. The Samosa's were average. Also, their service time was very fast. Gave the impression the foods just re-heated for quick service. On-to the mains. I ordered a special (Sea Bass blackened with Rice and Vegetables) and my wife ordered the lamb enchiladas. Again the taste was very average. The sea bass was a medley of fish, rice, broccoli, sweet potato and 1000s of other vegetables. It just took the taste away. The blackened sea bass itself was decent but everything around it was too much. Request to chef: Keep it simple. The lamb enchiladas were nothing to rave about. The quantity is good to keep your tummy filled. This was our first Indian place in Marin. Definitely much better places across in SF. We'd give this a pass next time. read more

Ok, we were a group of 6 adults and 4 kids let me start with good things.. courteous staff and quick responses. Taste is ok and customizable Not so good things.. This restaurant is small but be careful, coz your bill will be huge and quantity will be small :) .. we ordered mushroom appetizer and we could count mushrooms.. exactly 11 cut mushrooms.. and no much options for veggie appetizer. We came on a Saturday for lunch and chose to sit outside with no wait. We ordered the shrimp appetizer with fresh chutney, smoked eggplant enchiladas, curry trio, and rose mango dreams, all with mild spiciness. All the dishes were fresh but average. The top dishes we enjoyed were the curry trio and enchiladas. The ravioli in the rose mango dreams didn't stand out to me and needed to be combined with ample sauce. The shrimp appetizer is just shrimp swimming in a sauce, and when it came out, the server asked if we wanted bread to go with it. We said yes, and it turned out that the bread had an additional charge that the server did not disclose when he offered it. The service was slow in a sense that there were too many customers and not enough servers. I could tell that the servers were working hard to take care of everyone's orders, but it wasn't seamless and they were a bit forgetful. If you expect prompt service, this is not the place for you. Additionally, the restroom was slippery and wet when I went to use it the first time. There was someone trying to clean up, and I wish they had stopped me before going in because it really wasn't usable, quite dangerous actually. read more

First time trying this spot and it did not disappoint. The owner seemed very friendly and charming. I got the vegetarian samosa chaat, which was made a little differently than what I am used to. This dish had a mango sauce and also marinated fruit in the center, which tasted like pears to me. Overall samosas were fresh tasting and the flavors came together very well. I scraped the plate clean. Also had a papadum and masala chaas with my appetizer and it made me feel like I was back in India. You usually drink masala chaas in the heat to stay cool, which was perfect for the hot weather in Sausalito. I would definitely go back there again if I'm in the area. read more

I really enjoyed my quick lunch today at Avatar's in Sausalito! I heard about Avatar's from Marin Magazine's "Best of Marin Restaurants" where Avatar's was featured as the Best Vegan/Vegetarian Restaurant in Marin County. While I'm not vegan or vegetarian, I really enjoy healthy and thoughtfully prepared food so as I was driving by and saw their signage, I decided to stop in for a quick bite. After reviewing the menu, I quickly discovered this isn't your average Indian restaurant. The dishes are a unique fusion blend of Indian, Mexican, Caribbean and Asian influences. I couldn't really decide what to order, as I'm a creature of habit and always order the same thing at Indian cuisine restaurants. I told the kind female server that I usually order Palak/Saag Paneer and she said they could make it. It was the best and most flavorful rendition I have had in the bay area. I frequently order from Lotus and have ordered from Bombay Grill and Amber Kitchen on delivery. I also order from Indian Palace sometimes as it's a convenient location on my way home to Tiburon. Avatar's version was the best. I ordered it with a medium spice level, accompanied by slightly blackened fresh vegetables and basmati rice. The rice was perfectly cooked and not over-flavorered with too much saffron but just enough to get notes of its vibrant flavor. Ashok explained that in their version of the curry doesn't include dairy or cream and is oil based using bean products. Totally wow, a healthier version of the dish that tastes better! Normally Indian restaurants put curry in an oval shaped dish that makes it appear larger, so when the plate first arrived with the curry and rice on one traditional round plate, I thought it was a smaller preparation, but it wasn't and the portion was perfect. Ashok also just prepared a Daal Curry for a takeout guest and brought a small sample for me to try it the next time I visit. He explained that all dishes are made-to-order and they don't pre-cook large portions to serve like many other Indian restaurants do. The curry was also excellent, but I like spinach curry over cauliflower/lentil curries (re: creature of habit). I ordered the same dish again to-go to enjoy for dinner. I was surprised the restaurant wasn't immediately packed at 11 on a Friday like other restaurants in town with the food and service being so excellent. Go to Avatar's -- incredible! read more

The eggplant garlic shrimp pasta and the New Zealand lamb curry were my favorite. We ordered a 5 spice level and it was just a nice kick. We could've done a 7 but it wouldn't have been as enjoyable as the 5. The sauces were simply to die for. We exchanged words among ourselves we'd like more noods and more rice all because the sauces were just so good. My only tiny complaint is that we'd have liked a little more, portion wise. At first I thought it was just a few bites, but as I had more, there really was no taste. We had come close to the time they were closing for the afternoon. Spent the morning kayaking along the bay and was completely famished! This place caught my eye as a unique lunch spot with Indian fusion food. Our server was so enthusiastic and confident in their food that he ordered for us right after I asked what dishes were popular, LOL. We had to tell him to scratch that and give us a few more minutes Both the lamb enchiladas and the shrimp pasta were good! I could really taste both Mexican and Indian flavors equally in the enchiladas. What a great experience, would highly recommend it. Avatar's had come up in my search a few times before. Can't believe I had not been here until now. We were in the area, so decided to stop by Avatar since they had vegan options. It's located in obscure mall, but there was ample parking outside the restaurant. Upon entering, we were immediately seated. They have both indoor and outdoor dining. The owner gladly welcomed us, asked if it was our first time. I mentioned that I was vegan, so he suggested they would prepare a couple of dishes for us (also asked if we had any preference in terms of veggies). I was a bit apprehensive, but decided to go ahead with the two surprise dishes. We also ordered one plate of samosas (which were great, served with green and the mango sauce as chutney ) and vegan mango lassi (it was good, it's pretty much mango juice). The real highlight though were the 2 surprise dishes - saag tofu, dish with greens served with basmati rice and grilled veggies. The second dish was Punjabi enchiladas served with rice. They were off the menu dishes prepared with unique veggies, which we were not able to identify. Both dishes were soooo delicious, couldn't tell they were vegan, gluten-free and no sugar. When we walked into Avatar's, we were immediately greeted by Greta energy from all the staff. We didn't even have to look at the menu - the owner asked our dietary restrictions and said he'd take care of us. What we were met with was a spicy taro/tofu enchilada and a palak tofu dish made with quinoa leaves. We picked this place on a whim while traveling and were so glad we did. Sure, the motto includes fusion confusion and they're not wrong. But our main guy was clearly part of the family and so funny and engaging. But let me talk about the food. I didn't think an enchilada curry would be amazing but it was. I'm still thinking of that rock shrimp served with a bed of rice. Our friend told us it was one of the best meals she'd eaten. And the spouse chose a traditional prawn curry. I was jealous. Why couldn't I eat all the things? Also had a lovely chai to counteract the slight chill of the Bay. Absolutely would come back. It totally broke my rule about fusion, but I didn't care. We were all happy and well fed. Service was good. Also, the seating inside is somewhat limited so you may appreciate the patio. I like their mango ice cream dessert. I find the entrees all taste similar in terms of sauces. I love Indian food but Avatar's entrees, especially those with tomatoes, taste the same and fwiw, I've eaten Indian food on 3 continents. I have baseline knowledge including taking Indian cooking classes, making my own curries with mortar and pestle and grinding my spices. Picky or passable? You decide, it's worth one visit. NB: last time I had the mango ice cream pie dessert with pistachios it had picked up the flavor of something else in the fridge (onion?) and it was not delicious. We were traveling up from Southern California (Laguna) and happened to stumble upon this oasis on Yelp. What a find.... The owner and his family helped us out by welcoming us enthusiastically and then proceeding to order just the perfect meal for us. We tried a little bit of everything in this cozy, Sausalito restaurant and each dish was better than the one before, capped off with a delicious dessert. I cannot say enough good things about the restaurant and family... this will definitely be on our must visit places during any of our visits to SF. Highly recommend the Dungeness crab enchiladas as well as any of the seafood curries of seasoning in the jerk sauce. Also, parking is free, easy, and plentiful...always a plus! read more

We came to Avatar's based on the high ratings from fellow Yelpers. Glad we followed their advise, because Avatar's did not disappoint. They have a lot of great items to choose from. But you can also go off menu. I wanted to give my kids something with pasta and lamb, but they do not have that on the menu. The owner told me not to worry, they can make it work. My kids are normally picky. I was so happy that both my kids were fighting over the pasta and lamb. It was a big serving, but they finished the entire dish. I was so happy. My hubby was very fond of the Samosas. It was medium-spiced. It was full of flavor. The chutney complemented the Samosa's crispy dough and the flavorful filling. I enjoyed the ground lamb enchilada. The sauce was a rich flavor with a hint of spice. The basmati rice was a great pair with the lamb sauce. The cheese was just a light touch to a complete flavor. We also ordered the Trio Curry. I like the curry but I expected more than one piece of prawn in the dish. Nonetheless, the dish came with a generous serving of veggies and chicken and lamb slices. I found the enchilada sauce. Maybe the ground lamb added to the enchilada sauce. I found the Trio Curry sauce just spicy (hot spicy) and the other spices just drowned out or did not notice the curry flavor in it. I still liked it. But I think the curry sauce goes best with the prawn than the other meat. I only wish that this restaurant was closer to home. I hope to be able to try the other dishes. read more

We had the lamb enchiladas, ground lamb dish, and the Avatar's Dream. The lamb enchilada was good for what it was but the lamb was very heavy and I guess lamb and cheese do not pare well for my taste buds. I would not try it again. However, my guest loved his ground beef lamb dish so no complaints there. AND my favorite was the dessert. It was creamy with just enough sweetness. I would go there just for the dessert.
