The food is delicious. Why not more stars? Price. The barbacoa plate is $10 and they give you two tortillas. I included a carne guisada taco with cheese and it alone was close to $5 for the one taco. The service was good and I was happy with the meal but we are in San Antonio and when you price your breakfast this high I have a problem making it my go to. I decided to give breakfast a try at Ay Chiwawa during a recent visit to San Antonio. I arrived early on a Saturday and ordered the Machamigas Plate with beef fajitas. The plate was served with creamy refried beans, potatoes and yummy fresh flour tortillas. The eggs did not have many pieces of tortillas chips, but the scrambled eggs were soft and tasty. The seasoned beef fajita meat had great flavor. I had ordered a refreshing iced tea with my breakfast and it came with lime--that always makes me happy! I think my waitress got very busy and she did not come back to refill my tea! However, she apologized and brought me a large iced tea with lime in a large "to go" cup and that earned them the 5th star! Great local place, at least for breakfast! read more

My wife and tried this place after hearing some great reviews about it. My wife is from Mexico, and as such, says the Mexican food we have here in San Antonio, isn't authentic. However, she absolutely loves this place. She said this IS authentic. From the huaraches to the rum horchata, to the chicken soup, she says it reminds her of Mexico. Now, myself, growing up in San Antonio, Tex Mex is more my style, and this place has great Tex Mex food as well. The price is slightly higher than other smaller Tex Mex restaurants, but if you know you are going to get great food, and great service, the price is worth it. Overall, even with all of the Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurants in San Antonio, this place is definitely worth a try. read more

Just ate at the new Ay Chiwawa for the first time, and they got both my tacos wrong. I Had a simple order of a bean and cheese with white cheese and got yellow cheese. Also ordered their migas taco with fresh egg, which I did not receive, along with white cheese missing on that taco as well. I was not charged for anything I did not get so not sure if they forgot or what, but it was clear when ordering and was perceived as they heard. Also spoke to management who only said they would take care of it, no credit offered. I did not eat either taco as those modifications matter to me here More of heads up here to check orders before you leave! Hate having to do that. read more

So glad to have found this! It's difficult to navigate to without google maps. They have good vegetarian options, not just cheese enchiladas. Their chips are nice and crispy, don't feel fried. Do yourself a favor and ask for their green sauce. Katie, our server, was extremely helpful and pleasant to speak with. She recommended the stuffed avocado and it was great. I personally think that is better than guacamole. It's very different, it's half an avocado topped with grilled zucchini and cheese. They have tasty black beans served warm! Went during the freeze of 02/01/23 and we were pleased that this location was open. The establishment was busy but we had very good service. I ordered the Wawa nachos, my mom and husband ordered the menudo and huevos a la Mexicana. They've redone the inside and it's very clean and welcoming. The food was good. The menudo was surprisingly good as was the egg dish. My nachos were plain and over cheesy. The salsa isn't spicy enough, not even the "hottest" one had any pica IYKYN. Im still going back. Update...Was finally able to swing by on a Monday afternoon for their daily off menu lunch special! Ordered the Pork Green Chili plate that comes with rice & refried beans & 2 tortillas plus a drink. I went thru the drive thru and asked but expected to be told no cuz it was the lunch special to have the included rice & refried beans to be substituted for a double order of charro beans (I previously had the charro beans and they were the bomb) and they said sure! I was shocked, as I expected the usual no substitutions on our specials, but pleasantly surprised and so very very appreciative! Additionally, I ordered the chicken enchilada verde plate for my son, since not a lunch special the drink wasn't included but the rest (rice & refried beans - his preference - and tortillas) was included. They asked if I wanted salsa and I chose the the green which is their hottest version (learned that on a previous visit too and even tho I have a wishy washy tolerance for heat, my system lives it at times and other times my mouth is on fire, haven't been able to figure out why...probably age!) because my son lives for spicy! When I got home, they actually included both salsas so it was another added bonus, we both thoroughly enjoyed our meals! Mine was just what I was hoping for, the meat was trimmed very well and the sauce it was cooked in was so flavorful, it paired so well in the tortilla as a taco (I rarely eat tortillas but this was a special occasion and the dish called for it) which I also added some of the charro beans as an added bonus. They even packed the beans in a separate sealed container so the juice wouldn't be able to leak out anywhere with my to-go order, I can't tell you how many times another establishment would put them in the same container, only to leak out all over the bag by the time I got home and it was a hot mess! All in all it was exactly what I was hoping for when I first spotted the Monday lunch special entry on their menu! A+ + + is the score I give them on this visit, they did not disappoint, so if you ever get the opportunity to swing by or in for lunch on a Monday, the Pork Green Chili is THE option to try! read more

This review is solely based on my drive through order which was their chicken tortilla soup. There wasn't a long wait and my soup was handed to me within minutes of getting to the window. I did enjoy the soup and it's one I would order again. With that said, I did try the chicken fajita taco when they first opened and I was not impressed with it at all. The chicken was very dry. I literally didn't know it had changed from a Las Palapas to the new restaurant until I pulled up. As of 2021 the location is in a major construction area, so unless you know what to look for you could easily miss the sign. Having been to the LP numerous times, I can see that the restaurant's interior is very similar with more lighting. I came for breakfast. The have a good selection and variety. I had the Migas plate which was a good portion. The server was very attentive and offered me a coffee to go. I also added a barbacoa taco with cilantro and onions, because i can never pass up barbacoa anything!
