I came for a $45 SF Restaurant Week birthday dinner. While the flavors were great, the pacing and a kitchen mishap dampened the celebration. The Highlights Flavor: The tea leaf salad and platha were excellent; that curry sauce is a winner. Drinks & Dessert: The mango lassi was refreshing, and both the calamansi custard and Thai tea tiramisu were delicious finishes. Attentive Service: Our server was great about keeping our drinks refilled throughout the night. The Letdowns Wait Times: The gap between courses was massive. It took over an hour for our mains to arrive, making us feel like our order had been forgotten. Availability: They were already out of two appetizer options (squid and short rib), which was disappointing for a set menu. Quality Control: I found a piece of foil shaving in the mashed potatoes served with the short rib. The Verdict: The portions are filling and the food tastes authentic, but the long wait times and the foil in the food made it a frustrating birthday experience. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant is a tad loud so difficulty hearing conversations.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]
With a party of four, we had dinner here. We ordered the firecracker cauliflower as an appetizer to share, duck skin fried rice, and miso-butter noodle with fresh Dungeness crab. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior was nice and customer service fine.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It wasn't crowded around the time we went (4:30-5ish).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I thought everything was pretty good in terms of taste, portion, and appearance!
B STAR?!? MORE like a C+ rating..... Ugh this place was such a hard review because the server we had was one of the best servers I've had all year.....it's not the service, it's the food. Let's dive into it. The roti was the best out of what we tried. Classic roti with a decent curry sauce, half to mess up. 4/5 The duck skin fried rice was a bit dry with hardly and duck and just a few pieces of fried skin we were fighting for. The skin was great, the rice not so much, and the duck was dry. 3/5 One of our least favorite was the coconut curry noodle soup. It was spicy which we don't remember reading it would be that spicy, but most importantly it waa soooo bland that we were like well, do you want it because I don't. 1/5 The papaya salad was just soggy and weird tasting, like a bitter taste of too much lime and soggy papaya with fish sauce. 2/5 Their tea was okay but pricey, again watered down but at least it was in a pitcher but you pay for good money for it. It's hard to say I enjoyed our meal because I didn't and ended up boxing it to go to give away rather than wasting it. We went out to a different place afterwards for dessert and snacks.
We had such a fun and satisfying experience at B Star! We were seated quickly in this airy light beautiful spot, and served just as quickly. A true delight of a visit. This is what we ordered: The "Asian Beef Wraps" were amazing. So fun to self-assemble; it felt like such an interactive DIY experience; the waitress aptly let us know that it was an "involved" meal and I absolutely loved it. The meat was so well flavored, the multiple different toppings crunchy and soft and fresh and hearty. What a great way to eat, I'd love to order them again. The Salmon Ochazuke was incredible. Such a warm delicious umami treat, with a variety of textures and delicious flavors. I'd never had this dish before, glad we decided to try! A random aside; their bathroom system was fun, with a green/red light above the entrance so you knew from afar whether it was occupied or not. Love it.
B-star was an amazing little restaurant my friends and I decided to stop by during SF restaurant week. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside the restaurant is not too big, but the vibes are very cozy and warm wood tones.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The staff is also incredibly accommodating and friendly. When we went, I mentioned I had a sesame seed allergy and one of the dishes that was brought out accidentally had sesame seeds on it so I mentioned it to the waiter and they took it back and re-made the entire dish for me without sesame seeds but since it took some time to remake my dish and I was waiting while my friends all had their dishes the staff fully comped my meal once they brought it out towards the end which was super sweet. Every dish was also incredibly delicious with some of my friends getting a fried egg with rice dish with grilled pork, and I decided to order the Salmon pot pie which was so juicy and reminiscent of a chicken pot pie but more delicious and having a thai style curry flavor to it with the yellow curry tasting broth base. This is definitely a must get dish!
I've been going to this spot for at least ten years. It's one of my favorite places to bring all my friends that are visiting town because the food is so solid. Ambiance: [[HIGHLIGHT]]Noise levels are pretty standard, not super loud or quiet and really depends on the patrons.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There's about 8 two tops and maybe about 6 four tops, but looks like it can be arranged. There's a few two tables by the window, which is a little more private and nice to people watch.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service: A host usually greets you at the door and brings you to your table with menus. You can also make reservations, which I recommend. They give you plenty of time to order and sometimes you have to flag someone down if you're really hungry. Another side note that I really like is that there's a red/green light indicating whether someone's in the restroom, so you don't have to wait around the hallway. Food: Short Rib Croquettes - airy, light, and perfectly crisp, but certainly not my favorite on the menu. The flavors were nice, but I didn't catch any hints of shiitake or daikon. The short rib was very tender. Tea Leaf Salad - the textures and flavor combos are always a delight. The fresh and crisp lettuce, mixed with the crunchy garlic chips and lentils really kicks it up a notch if you like mouth feel. Back in the day, they would have the salad in separate areas of the plate and mix it in front of you with the lemon, but now it's premixed. It's great if you're hungry, but the presentation was a nice touch. (I could see how this might take too much time if the restaurant is busy though.) B*sprouts is a must! I have turned a brussel sprouts HATER into a "okay, this is pretty good," which I consider a win. I told this person, "look, if you hate brussel sprouts after trying this, you definitely hate brussel sprouts. If you do not, then you've been having it all wrong." Turns out they've been having it wrong. This is a must have if you come to this restaurant. The veggie is perfectly cooked and crispy at the edges, slightly sweet and fragrant. With the addition of the popped rice, it's a beautiful thing. Don't skip it if you come. Salmon Ochazuke - perfectly cooked salmon on top of a bed of pickled veggies, a soft poached egg, and rice. They pour the green tea dashi broth at the table. This is also a must order if you like salmon and want a new comfort food item. The flavors are light and complex, the broth is flavorful, but not overly salty. This restaurant will always be a staple of mine, as well as introducing it to every person I know. It's absolutely worth trying.
Tea leaf salad delicious. Had a very unique, herbaceous flavor and i loved the toasted nuts which gave the salad a roasted note Miso cod with noodles excellent. Very tender and flavorful The latska had a great flavor in the broth however not sure why they add croutons which get soggy if you don't eat the soup fast enough. They could use a larger variety of sake. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant is very austere.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]
I've been coming to B Star & Burma Superstar for years, and while the flavors are still good, I feel like it's lost a little of the magic it used to have. The portion sizes in particular have gotten noticeably smaller compared to what they once were, which makes the value feel a bit off, especially given the number of excellent Thai spots in San Francisco at similar price points. [[HIGHLIGHT]]That said, the food itself was tasty and well-prepared, and the ambiance remains warm and inviting.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The back room could use a bit more attention when it comes to service, but overall it's still a lovely, comfortable place to sit down and enjoy a meal. Solid spot for Thai flavors, but I'd love to see a return to more generous portions and the consistency that made this a classic SF spot
Came back on a weeknight for three people and had zero wait! Quickly seated and ordered an entree for each person. The miso cod is perfectly cooked and buttery, although the garlic noodles were quite salty and too aldente for my tastes. The pot pie is always a hit, although they changed the flavoring from the Thai curry pot pie to the salmon pot pie.
Came here with a reservation for Monday dinner, and it was pretty empty at 6:00 PM. It was very quiet as opposed to Burma Superstar next door, which made for a calmer environment. The waitstaff were very present and helpful with giving us suggestions of how much food to get. We got the Vegetarian Samusas, the Laksa, and the Tea Leaf Salad. Vegetarian Samusas: 3/5, they were fine but not extraordinary. Also a bit pricey for how many we got. Laksa: 4/5, not too spicy but good amount of noodles along with shrimp and tofu. Loved the coconut chicken broth! Tea Leaf Salad: 5/5, always a classic. Love the plentiful amount of jalapeños in this version. Could have eaten the whole thing by myself! Overall, a solid spot for Burmese food, not a bad alternative to the ever-crowded Burma Superstar.
[[HIGHLIGHT]]Perfect little spot.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I went there for a solo late lunch and ordered the prix fix deal for $28. The portions were so generous. The main was a brand new dish they were trying out. It was excellent and the chicken was tender. I'll eat anything w a gooey egg on top. The staff was so sweet. I'll be back agin and again.
I'm obsessed with this place. I would literally marry the firecracker cauliflower it's THAT GOOD. Perfectly crispy and well balanced flavors. Many vegetarian options, but the appetizers are where it's at. Tea leaf salad and firecracker cauliflower cannot be skipped. The service is fast and attentive. Can't say anything bad about B Star I just love it so much.

I came here for brunch to try something that isn't bacon, eggs and pancakes. I'm glad I did because having tea leaf salad to start your day is a wonderful feeling. You're still getting the tea, just in a different way. The tea leaf salad is probably their signature item and it just doesn't disappoint me ever. I also tried the chicken and shrimp biriyani, which kinda tasted like a curry to me. I suppose it was still delicious but not life changing. The one good thing is that they use humongous shrimps. They were plump and plentiful. Friend had the pork tocino with garlic fried rice and loved it. To end my power breakfast, I decided to get some coffee. I'm a huge fan of the vietnamese drip coffee with condensed milk and was excited when I saw it on the menu. Regardless of where they got the coffee or what brand, that thing was strong. Food Great quality. I love the colors and textures of the Asian fusion. Flavors were not overwhelming yet distinct enough for me to enjoy. I got the oxtall, which looked great and was tender. Atmosphere and Service Somewhat dimly lit with red mood lighting. The restaurant had an rustic old san francisco feel too it, yet the presentation of the food and china is very trendy. Waiter was fairly attentive and didn't bother to butt in while we were talking. So he knew when it was appropriate to approach the table. Conclusion Great place to try some Burmese fusion. Quality is near top notch with decent service. If youre looking for cheap asian food, this is not the place. Come here if you want to try something new. read more

I am writing a review for their brunch, as my last review was for their dinner. Their brunch is just as great as their dinner! The dishes were reasonably priced, they had great flavor, offered a wide range of meals from more authentic Burmese dishes to more American dishes, and the portions were huge! Service was great as usual too even though they're always busy! I will come back! read more

Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes- I did just have a food-gasm. B Star Bar- why have you been hiding in the Richmond?!?!? (Ok, you're not exactly hiding on Clement and with all the reviews in your favor, I'm the idiot for not coming sooner!) After many failed attempts, the boy and I FINALLY made and KEPT (kept being the keyword) our reservation at B Star Bar. Just writing this review has me salivating! This charming little place, while cozy, can't be described as comfy. You eat your meal practically on top of your neighbors. (Heaven forbid you get sat next to uber chatty girls who drank too much and felt the need to discuss their lives at the highest decible audible to the human ear.) Nonetheless, it doesn't really detract from the heaven that you're about to consume. Our servers were all friendly, but they have some trouble with pacing and attentiveness. Our water glasses would sit long empty. There were quite a few overly-long pauses between courses. (In all fairness, I was so excited after my first bite that I probably was a little impatient.) But this dear Yelpers, is where the negativity ends. We ordered: Walnut Shrimp- lightly fried shrimps topped with a sweet sauce, roasted walnuts and sesame. UMM BURMA- WTF? Allow me re-write the description: HEAVEN! ABSOLUTE HEAVEN! DO NOT LEAVE THIS PLACE WITHOUT TRYING THESE! I COULD EAT THEM AGAIN, AND AGAIN, AND AGAIN. AND NOW I REALLY WANT SOME- RIGHT NOW. These absolutely stole the show! Duck Lettuce Cups- Think PF Changs Lettuce Wraps, but duck. Calling them cups is deceitful. They were incredibly flavorful- but I'm not a huge fan of bell pepper. The boyfriend loved them. Pork & White Beans- OH MY GOD. ANOTHER SHOW STEALER! So tender, so delectable! Yummy yummy yummy! Chicken Shrimp Biryani- I was trying to be adventurous. I should stick to my guns. While flavorful, I didn't love this. It's probably just me though- and not the dish. You better believe we'll be back! I can't wait to take out-of-towners here! read more

I went here with a large group. We ordered a bunch of appetizers to share. The lotus chips and curry fries were really good. The chips were crispy. The curry sauce for the fries was great. The tuna ceviche was good. The tuna was seared on the outside and raw on the inside. The fresh greens with the tuna went well together. The B Sprouts were also good. The sprouts were nice and tender and had good flavor. I ordered the lamb curry. The curry wasn't too spicy but it had a lot of flavor. The lamb was nice and tender. If you bring a cake they will charge a cake cutting fee per person. read more

I wanted to go to Burma Superstar but waiting there was approx. 2 hours so decided to check out B Start bar. This is the sis branch of Burma Superstar and food/menu is almost same. We ordered Tea leaf salad as suggested by other Yelpers and it was the best salad I ever had. Online / phone reservation makes really convenient , no long lines and wait. There are metered parking along the street and finding one on a friday evening was really easy. TIP: In case you reach early , there is an irish bar right across the street to kill some time ;) read more

Incredible Food.I come regularly for the Tea Leaf salad and the Leechy mint smoothy... SIMPLE YET COMPLEX FLAVORS leaves your Mouth so happy and your mind Craving for more. Best advice Make a reservation. There is a five seat bar sitting if your alone and want to sit there to eat, otherwise you might be waiting a bit.Worth the wait. They have a great happy hour appetizer menue from I believe 5-7 .Drunken mussels so yumii. Friendly Staff , lively warm atmosphere. Perfect for Dates or out of town guests. Locals hot spot. This place is delicious! If you are going during normal eating hours make sure you call in to put your name down, since you could be waiting a while. Whenever my friends come to visit from out of town, I take them here so they can try something new, and not surprisingly, it's always a hit. My go-to items are the tea leaf salad and the miso cod noodles. Sea bass is good too, but I can't break the bank too often. My friend had the Thai curry pot pie which was good too, but super spicy! This is my favorite spot, come here and you won't regret it:) read more

We were one of those unprepared guests with no reservations last night but seating was fairly simple. If they say the wait is 30 min, don't go for a walk around, you may miss your turn. Appz: Once our waiter brought the tea leaf salad to mix it for us, we knew this would live up to the hype. The salad had this crunchiness from the roasted garlic, peanuts and lentils that is so pleasantly surprising! Then there's the fermented tea leaf aspect with hints of sesame that just gives you a completely new flavor profile if it's your first time. The plathas were like very soft/buttery parathas with a basic coconut based curry dip but don't be fooled by the simplicity, these are not for the addictive, impulsive eaters! We shied away from the stuffed platha thinking it would be too filling but I reckon it's even better. Mains: We had the spicy duck skin fried rice with fiery basil chicken. In retrospect, plain jasmine rice may have been a smarter option. The fried rice was interesting, especially the nicely done sunny side up eggs on top and introduction of so many bell peppers but I was craving some more hints of duck skin. The chicken was BANG ON with flavor + portion + plenty string beans. Service could be slightly better, seems like they were understaffed and struggling. OK atmosphere, messy restroom. A few more soup options like coconut chicken soup like that of Burma Superstar would be nice. Would have to go back to try the other options on the menu for sure! read more
Friend wanted to grab some brunch and originally we decided on Eats, which is down the block. From what I know Eats and B Star is under the same owner, but I could be wrong. Eats had a long wait, so I suggested B Star since we both haven't had their brunch yet. We walked in to put our name down and we only waited about 10 minutes. While we waited we walked down to a coffee shop and I received a phone call when they were ready to seat us. I really enjoyed the fries and longganisa! The fries came with a dip that was so good and the longganisa was flavorful. The waffle was alright and it wasn't as bomb as the one at Eats. Overall, food was pretty good. Prices are a little high, but most brunch places are in that range these days. I would be back read more

The thing I value most about any restaurant is CONSISTENCY, and over my past DOZEN visits to B Star Bar, I can declare this place CONSISTENTLY AWESOME. I don't really consider this place fusion, as the dishes are fairly authentic to their respective countries. There's so many great dishes here. I have my favorites like the Tea Leaf Salad, Pork Tocino & Wild Rice Salad, but they are always adong things to the menu soni suggest you ask the waitress what's good to try. The patio is nice during the summer. Prices are also pretty reasonable here with most entrees around $10-14. To be honest, Im not a fan of Burma Superstar, their sister restaurant, as I think it's waaaaay overhyped and Im not going to wait an hour for food ever. This place can have a wait sometimes but they take reservations too which helps. read more

Came here for brunch! We started with a carafe of mango mimosas. YUM. Then got the infamous brussels sprouts that are a must!! Tastiest morsels I've ever had! MUST GET! Even if you're not a fan of brussels sprouts, these may convert you! I had the duck hash quesadilla that was delicious, and a large portion. I was only able to finish about 1/3. V had the pork tocino and licked the plate clean. Service was friendly and attentive. I'll be back to try dinner! read more

This place has a great laid-back bar-type atmosphere -- great to come here with your (girl)friends for a quick bite before a movie. Service has been fifty-fifty, we've had some great waiters before, and we had some guy once who just looked really bored to be there. The bruschetta is super tasty! I ordered a panini once, but it paled in comparison. I'd go with the bruschetta platter from now on. Bottom line: super convenient location, great ambiance, I'd come back :) read more

I am definitely a fan of Burmese food now! We ordered family style so we could taste a bit of everything...almost! The tea leaf salad was so good! I love how the waitress will mix the salad for you at the table. I like how the salad is refreshing, flavorful, and just the right amount of crunch from the nuts, seeds and lentils. Satay Bites: Good, but nothing special. Lamb Curry: I'm not a big fan of lamb, but my friends all loved it! Pumpkin Pork Stew: Love pumpkin so this dish was great. Chunks of kabocha and pork all mixed together with coconut rice. LOVE that coconut rice! Crispy Duck Skin Fried Rice: It was spicy, flavorful and amazing! A tad on the greasy side, but delicious nonetheless. A good amount of crispy duck skin and pieces of duck. B Sprouts: Very good! The place is small and it does get packed! The successful spin-off of Burma Superstar, this venue serves up delicious, multi-flavored entrees that hit the entire palate in a friendly, low-key ambiance great for groups or a one-on-one. As a group, we shared: Coconut rice Spicy duck skin fried rice Miso cod Tea leaf salad (with the fermented tea leaf dressing on the side) Vegetable samusa soup Tamarind cooler (beer, tamarind, ginger, worth it) I would order all of them again! Note that the fermented tea leaf salad dressing is a mild and savory flavor, not pungent. Great wait staff. I think they plugged into our minds to know when our drinks were running low. PLUS, B-star does not have the mega line that Burma Superstar does. Now watch, I've ruined my edge and when I go back, there will be a line! read more

Great food, wonderful service and even better drinks! It was my first time here and I will be back! Lamb Curry was amazing, tea salad was the best part of the meal and their mojitos were refreshing. I will definitely be back, plus it beats standing in line at Burma Star.. :) It's pretty much amazing! read more

I came here for brunch on a busy Sunday morning (and it was Valentine's day!) around 11:00. I walked in to request a table for 2, and I was told that the wait would be roughly 15-20 mins and that they would call my phone when my table was ready. Personally, I love this set-up because I wouldn't have to stand there waiting for my name to be called. Additionally, on Sundays, the Clement Street Farmer's Market is right outside, so you can kill time roaming around the market! After 20 minutes of exploring the market, I received a call and was seated promptly. Their brunch menu comes with standard items- waffles, pancakes, etc- but has a few other cool dishes, like tocino and longanisa. Now- I'm Filipino, and I looove my Filipino breakfast dishes. Naturally, I had to get the Pork Tocino with garlic rice (with a mango soda, no doubt). I also ordered a side of bacon. My boyfriend ordered the chicken croquette. Our food came quickly, and the portions were adequate. My boyfriend finished his food pretty quickly and was happy with the dish. I was a little disappointed with the amount of bacon I got (2 small pieces for 3.50? Gimme at least 4 pieces lol) but was happy with the tocino portion. Now, I've had many versions of tocino throughout my life. B Star's was good, but I wish it was a little crunchier and a little more charred. Overall, it was tasty and the garlic rice was delicious. Since they were busy, we didn't get checked on regularly and our check took 15 minutes to come to our table. But it was Valentine's day and the wait was understandable. I doubt it would take that long otherwise. I would like to come back and try their dinner sometime, as I've heard rave reviews about it. read more

Great service, great food, decent prices - this place has it all going for them. I came in time for happy hour (5-7pm), which meant a few apps like the popular fried cauliflower and brussels sprouts were about $1 off. The cauliflower was heavily breaded and coated in a sweet sauce with sesames on top. I didn't expect to love it when I saw it, but one bit into the crispy battered outside layer and into the creamy inside of the cauliflower was enough to convince me I spend that $6 wisely. My favorite dish was the brussels sprouts. They came with parmesan cheese and crispy rice sprinkled on top. I easily could have ate a few portions of this! I also ordered the tea leaf salad thanks to a a few previously spotted Yelp reviews, and was glad I did. It didn't look like anything special, but it tasted amazing and the waiter hand-tosses it table side. read more

I chose this restaurant because they actually list GF items on the menu. Wow, the food was amazing. I had the tea Leaf salad and spring rolls because I wanted something lighter. They were both so fresh, flavorful, unique and so good. I am visiting from out of town and plant to return before I leave. Thanks for making eating GF easier with a clear menu. read more

Small restaurant but food is superb. It's Burma Superstar sister restaurant but the quality is comparable. So don't wait in line so long when you can go 2 blocks down. The menu is different but quality is on par. We got the spicy duck skin rice, fried calamari, and a seasonal dish: Thai curry salmon pot pie. They all tasted really good! But very pricey. 2 people ordering 3 items the bill turned out to be roughly $60 with tip. If you want to splurge, this is a good place with good food and drinks. But if you want to save money, I'd recommend not coming here. read more
