My wife and I were craving pho so we searched for one in the area. This popped up and we drove on over. It's a small place with 8 tables. When we walked in two were occupied and three were waiting to be bussed. We sat down at an open table and waited less than two minutes before the owner came out to give us the menus. There is a huge selection at a great price. We both chose to have pho but they also had pad Thai and other south East Asian dishes. The owner took our order (and then bussed the tables) and was back in no time with our waters. Then the food came...it definitely hit the spot. The pho had deep flavors and was refreshing. If you're looking for fancy, keep moving! This is a Mom & Pop Vietnamese, no-frills family restaurant. The food is fresh, DELICIOUS, hot when it should be a day cold when it should be. The people speak broken English but will do whatever they can to accommodate you. They are lovely people and their phone is AMAZING, IMHO. Pho is very good. I am glad to make a detour for it. Piping hot pho on a cold day, not much can top it. The broth is very good, good portion, plenty of meat. Trust me I am the pho eating expert. I'm Vietnamese. Therefore, I have an advantage of knowing what's considered good, authentic Vietnamese food. I love coming here. The wait is not long and you will be seated immediately (unlike other places). I feel that this little gem is out of the way, but I would recommend the Bun Bo Hue (this is a specialty of the owners. It is a spicy broth base and considerably different from pho) and the Chicken Banh mi (sandwich). The Banh mi ga (chicken) is shredded and mixed with a certain spread that I think what makes it delicious! It has the pickled vegetables, jalapenos, cucumbers and cilantro. However, if you are craving pho, I think the chicken one is the best (normally, I would go for beef pho, but it's not as great as compared to other restaurants, but the chicken one is pretty flavorful). Several visits later and I'm still in love. Some beef ball soup app on the day I'm hung over and follow that with my favorite bun! Hot damn... Don't be mistaken about "portion sizes" you have an option for an upsize if you feel like a pig. I often hate the excessive size of other places making me feel like I have to finish off that 6 portion size Bun... no thanks! The owners are nice, the pho is good but not the best kind of bland and noddles are over cooked. The bowls are small. The bathrooms are gross. There was hair in sink and roaches on floor. The place is at the corner of Shiloh and Barnes Bridge, the leftmost store in "Shiloh Plaza East." I am not surprised that I am the first person to review this place. It is a bit hard to see. I happened upon it while going by. It is called "Ba Le #1, restaurant." There was no indication it is a Vietnamese restaurant, no name of dishes on the window, etc. Being Pho afficionados, my wife and I decided to check it out despite the unimpressive look of the exterior. We were pleasantly surprised! The spring rolls we had was good and the Pho was great! It was the best Pho I had in awhile, the soup is not too greasy and they give you so much meat! The meats were tender and tasty on their own. A regular bowl is $5.50 and a large is $6.50. You just can't beat a bowl of hot, delicious, and cheap Pho on a cold day. Few words of caution (things you might not like, want to know ahead of time) 1. The tendon is different than what I had elsewhere. It is larger and kind of yellowish looking. It tasted OK. I came to the conclusion with Pho, the tendons are cooked differently just about every restaurant. 2. The place is...different. They don't have disposable chopsticks in paper wrapper, they have regular chopsticks in a holder on table. We ordered hot tea and my wife noticed water/tea stain on the spout. Having grew up in China, it didn't bother me the least bit but I can see it being off putting for Americans. (Update: Ms Kim has updated the restaurant since my writing and the place is much nicer looking!) Caution aside, we were deeply impressed with the quality of Pho and since it is only 5 minutes away from our house. We'd be going regularly. :) read more

I don't remember the name of what I had, but it was a bed of rice vermicelli, crisp, chopped veggies - carrots, cucumber, bean sprouts, and a couple of home made spring rolls (egg rolls?) on top. Beautifully presented, but most importantly, very good, very fresh. By the time it occurred to me I should post a pic, I had already eaten it. This review is about the food and the "Mom and Pop" owners's service, not so much about the location, but I will get to that... I have tried Pho all over town and I can't find any at any price point that compares to the broth at this little hole in the wall. I love it so much that about a year ago, I invited my neighborhood's monthly ladies "recipe club" to eat there. (We usually alternate houses--eating and enjoying lots of wine;-),but occasionally do a restaurant.) . About 20 of us ventured over there and everyone had such a great time and enjoyed the food so much, they have asked to go back. (We'll be there next week.) It is in the absolute most nondescript location you can imagine. The decor is better than it used to be, but... It just doesn't matter. The food makes it worth it. The owners' English... Well, what English? Who cares. I don't mind a trip to Vietnam for dinner. The "Pop" always tries to please. I have just learned to order in stages. First, I order appetizers. When that arrives, I order the next course. It works. BTW- It's BYOB. For the ladies group, I carry a case of glass wine glasses. (They have a corkscrew and little jelly jar glasses.) and heavier duty napkins. I eat there at least once a week and I'm always greeted with a smile and sometimes little gifts of something she has baked or some kind of foreign fruit they have to show me how to eat. Their son once gave me tea he had brought back from Vietnam. Oh, I forgot to mention that it's super-cheap. $5.75 for the beef pho. If it's for dinner, I upsize it for $2. If I'm not alone, I order an off-the-menu salad for $10, which is a platter of salad with pork, shrimp, cucumbers, the kitchen sink... Share that and have a small pho, and you cannot go wrong. Just sayin'... Also, I should mention these folks work 7 days/week. So, I wouldn't go there just at the end of their open hours as they might be tired and trying to go home. If you're ever not feeling well and need some comfort food, drive HERE to get your pho. The broth is luxurious and not too salty (a common error). The plate of fresh herbs includes both cilantro AND basil - some peopel skimp on the basil and I don't know why... After speaking at length with the owner, Kim, I found out she takes great pride in making her beef stock from scratch (full details not revealed here). I came in here on a rainy day for a hot meal, and that's exactly what I got. I ordered the basic Pho (I think I got the #1) and it was flavorful and fatty and delicious. The service was decently awful on the other hand. My order came out before my friend even put his order in!! What? I would think it's common sense to bring the orders out together, but I guess at a restaurant like this, you're not paying for the service. I had the grilled pork and shrimp vermicelli number 38 on the menu. It was overall very tasty but was not filling the meat was very Nicky flavored and perfectly cooked however I felt like I needed more to match the amount if noodles that it came with. The service was very quick.the whole place is run by a super sweet older gentlemen who made us feel very welcome and cooks great. This place is really tasty just plan to order appetizers as well as a main dish to really be filled up. Overall a cool diamond in the rough (literally the rough the outside of this building is sketch but inside is clean and nice looking) I recommend if you are in the mood of supporting a super great guy and eating some tasty tasty Vietnamese. read more

This place comes off a small hole in the hall wall place, and like any hole in the wall places its either a hit or miss, but this place was on point with their Pho. I always go to this place regularly, and while I'm not Vietnamese, the lady who runs the restaurant always makes me feel like she's my Vietnamese mom. She cooks such great comfort food! The pho is awesome---a beef broth that is rounded, and full of flavor. The banh mi are just right. My only gripe is that the food isn't always cooked with the same consistent quality. Sometimes it's awesome, sometimes, it's just ok. But that's forgiven when you realize that one lady does the cooking, the serving, the cleaning, etc. Go here and patronize her business. I've become a bit of a pho addict this winter. Ba Le is the closest pho restaurant to me -- so I was happy to see such great reviews. I ordered take out #1 (your typical beef pho) and it was delicious... and super cheap... and super quick. When I entered the restaurant, there was a family with a couple of small children dining in. (I think the employees were really hoping I'd dine in.) The owners/employees are absolutely the nicest people in the world. Seriously. Even if the pho was mediocre (which it's not), I'd be back to support them. Speaking of -- tip well and use cash if possible. The location isn't scary like people are making it sound... I mean it's pretty much what I'd expect of a small strip mall at Shiloh and Barnes Bridge. Come for the food and you'll be pleased. read more

Stopped by here today around 11:15am on my way to work hoping to grab a banh mi sandwhich. Shop was closed, eventhough it said "open" on the door sign. A guy came to open the door for me. I asked if they were open and he said yes. So I stepped inside and asked if they had banh mi sandwhiches. He pointed at the menu and said only two kinds (deli ham or chicken), but it looked liked they really had nothing or leftovers. No thanks. How does this place have 4 stars?? Ba Le Restaurant is a hidden gem that serves delicious Vietnamese food. I recently discovered it on Yelp, and am grateful to previous reviewers who gave this place a thumbs up. The beef pho is really flavorful, with generous additions to the wonderful broth. The spring rolls were quite good too. There is a hole in the wall ambiance but you will find it to be clean and well-maintained. I ordered my fairly large meal as take-out, and they offered me tea while I waited. It was a kind thing to do on a hot day. The gentleman who served and packaged up my to-go order was friendly and accommodating. We'll return for the authentic food and the friendly service. The menu is diverse enough that it will be fun to explore what they offer. read more
