Jerk chicken and jerk salmon combo plate
    Linda M.

I've heard about Back A Yard from everyone around me for awhile. Finally stopped in on a random weeknight for dinner. They have some spots in their parking lot, but I imagine can get crowded. It's a no frills place, which I like. I'm here for the food, not the ambiance. We ordered at the counter and they brought us our food. We got the jerk chicken and jerk salmon combo which came with plantains and rice. Everything was good, we split the plate between two people and were full. We did just come from having dessert though so maybe next time we'll get our own plates. Super flavorful, chicken was juicy. Plantains were definitely a highlight.

AMAZING FOOD FOR THE PRICE. A whole plate of jerk chicken which is more than enough food is around 13 bucks which is crazy. The jerk chicken was really tender, and besides the meat, I was a huge fan of the spicy rice that they gave. Definetely going to go back to try the oxtail, as I have been recommended that by others that went here!

Came here for dinner with a few friends on Saturday. It's one of our friends' favorite. We ordered at the counter, and they brought out the food in to-go containers to our table, even though we're eating there. They're quite busy around 7pm, but there's no wait for a table. Food came out in a reasonable time. I really wanted to try the Saturday special, ackee & codfish, on their regular menu. However, the special that night was actually escoveitch fish, which was deep-fried. Since I was trying to eat healthier, I picked the jerk chicken & jerk salmon combo instead. It came with one good sized piece of salmon, two chicken drumsticks and one chicken thigh. The meat was very flavorful. The green sauce was quite spicy and salty. The combo also came with a small container of extra sauce, which I didn't need to use. The salmon and the chicken thigh were moist and cooked well, but the drumsticks were way too dry. The plantains were caramelized well and tasty; I enjoyed them a lot. The two scoops of rice and bean mixture paired really well with the meat. Overall, it was a delicious dinner with a generous portion of meat in a friendly environment with a causal vibe.

Stopped by Back A Yard Caribbean Grill tonight around 7pm and really enjoyed the food. I ordered the jerk salmon and jerk pork combo. The flavors were on point -- bold, well-seasoned, and very satisfying. The pork was slightly on the dry side, but still tasty and not bad at all. The salmon also had great jerk flavor, though it was a little dry as well. The sides were a highlight: the plantains were delicious, and the beans and rice had great flavor. The mango hot sauce was yummy and added a nice kick, and there was an amazing garlicky chimichurri-style sauce that came with the meal that really tied everything together. Overall, solid food with great Caribbean flavors, and I'd definitely come back to try the ox tail and goat curry I noticed on the sidewalk sandwich board ad

Delicious food and big portions for a reasonable price and they have daily specials too! Casual eatery with plenty of seating and all food served in takeout containers. Order at the counter and they will bring your food to you. Food was just a tad salty but flavor was great

Don't expect good service or a good attitude, and the worse thing here is the pre-tipping thing before you get your food. They have a pretty big menu, and the cashier was impatient with us trying to decide what to get. I tipped them 18%, and I got ZERO service, not even two water cups. The jerked items were delicious, and it came with a very spicy sauce on the side. I ordered the upside down cake, and it was not fresh, probaby the nastiest cake I ever had.

Went for the first time and the food was delicious! The whole order came with a small side of jerk sauce and I wish it came with more. You are able to buy some more sauce for 35¢ per. For under $20 the food definitely leaves you feeling full.

First time here and I loved it. I had the half chicken, half pork combo. Was considering the goat, but when I asked if it was fatty or lean, they said a little of both. Didn't want to take the chance my first time, so went with the standby proteins. Food was very tasty and a good portion size for dinner, with one thigh, one drumstick, and a portion of cut/sliced pork. Plantains were nicely done too and pleasantly and naturally sweet. We ate here. It's a casual setting and can get loud when a lot of people are here. I'd imagine a lot of people get take out, but it was fine to eat here and tables were kept clean. The sauce was a nice balance of spicy but not too spicy. I'm looking forward to getting take out and letting the rest of my family try this out!

This is a cute Jamaican restaurant that was introduced to us by some friends . They hosted a party at one of the locations and had great food options like jerk chicken , tofu , and rice with kidney beans . On the recent visit we ordered the coconut curried tofu and jerk chicken. Both were delicious . The ambiance is more informal . For service you order food at the cashier and you pick up your food at the counter . The staff is friendly .

Super good Jamaican food! The jerk chicken is juicy with the perfect amount of seasoning and goes perfectly with the rice and plantains. Food comes out quickly!

Great Caribbean chain in the South Bay Area! Whenever I'm craving Caribbean food, I often turn to Back A Yard because they offer delicious dishes at great prices. I like to get their Beef Oxtail bowl which includes tender pieces of oxtail, rice, beans, and delicious plantains. The oxtail and plantains are cooked perfectly and I love the sauce that cames with the bowl. Each time I've visited, I've gotten takeout, which I feel like is pretty common since it is very much a no frills spot. Definitely will be back sometime to try other items on their menu!

Back A Yard is one of those places I've known of and thought about going to for years, but just never got around to it, that is until now! I called ahead to pick up food to go for lunch, to my delight they said it would be ready in about 10 minutes, and sure enough it was! I got the jerk chicken and beef oxtails combo, which had a few oxtails, a chicken wing and thigh, rice with beans mixed in, plantains, and a green sauce that seemed similar to a chimichurri. The flavor of everything was great! Though there was a nice spice to the jerk, it wasn't overly spicy and the sweetness of the plantains helped to mellow out the heat in between bites. The chicken was cooked just about perfect and I would definitely get again. Docked a star because the oxtails were about 80% fat, I think I only got one bite that was all meat. The portion was hearty and even after giving away a few bites, I was stuffed when I finished. Would definitely come back here, but would skip the oxtail and try the pork next time.

No indoor seating here, but there's an outdoor patio with a couple tables out front. My takeout order was ready in less than 5 minutes on a Saturday afternoon. I selected a bunch of different items, thinking that the "quik eats" on the menu would be small bites. To my surprise, these were pretty much full sized dishes, with bread and fries included, so I ended up with more than enough to last me for days. Everything I got was delicious and exceeded my expectations. The jerk chicken pieces came with two drumsticks and two thighs and had a nice kick from the seasoning. The bbq pork spareribs were tender and juicy and very tasty even before I added the bbq sauce that came on the side. The baked mac and cheese was rich and satisfying. And that cornbread was heavenly, with an ideal texture and nice buttery flavor. It may be the best cornbread I've ever had. They even offer a jamaican version of cornbread on the menu, which the worker explained is more dessert-like and very good too. I tried the popular baleada, which is a home-made flour tortilla filled with a layer of mashed red beans, queso fresco, eggs and with or without meat (I got it with carne asada). The flour tortilla was just as other described - soft, buttery smooth, almost melt in your mouth goodness. The carne asada was dry and hard so I could've gone without. I bet a braised beef like barbacoa would've been perfect for this item. It also came with salsa and I selected mild which gave it a nice bright flavor. I also ordered a chicken tamale (they also offer pork) and I was surprised to find a whole chicken wing (no skin) stuffed into the tamale! I broke into it using a fork and hit something hard which turned out to be the bones. But honestly, this was one of the best tamales I've tried in a long time. Flavorful, moist, and a nice sized portion. It came wrapped in what I think was banana leaf. The service was fast on a Wednesday night and there were a handful of friendly patrons seated nearby. You could tell that they were regulars. The space was intimate with around 10-15 tables seating about 4 people each. Maya's Cafe menu has a wide assortment of dishes to choose from: serving breakfast dishes like chilaquiles, lunch items such as burritos, or soups and full on dinner plates with rice, beans, and choice of protein. There's even more selection and the whole menu is in Spanish so I'll be sure to use Google Translate next time!

The Good: * Large shared parking lot * Friendly service * Covered outdoor dining * The crust of the empanadas was buttery, flaky, and delicious. All the fillings were good, but you have to try the Hawaiian filling! It was truly fantastic and had us wishing that's all we'd ordered. * Guava Finger has the same perfect crust and tasty guava jam--I could eat a dozen of these and come back for more. *oink oink* * Carissa really enjoyed their lentil soup. I didn't try it, so I can't comment. The Meh: * I kind of prefer the chunks of meat in Peruvian empanadas to the ground meat in Colombian ones, but that's just a personal preference. It was still delicious, so at the end of the day, it's all academic. The Ugly: * No indoor dining, and outdoor dining is limited to only a handful of seats. Conclusion: We've been on the hunt for the best empanadas in the South Bay, and we finally found them.
