This was my last dinner on my visit from Ohio during Thanksgiving week. I ordered a beef oxtail and jerk chicken combo with a Mac and Cheese. Given the amount of food we had, we didn't wait longer than ten minutes. Great cook time if I do say so. The dining area isn't too big, but it has this home kitchen atmosphere. I had never had oxtail or any Jamaican food for that matter. The oxtail was juicy and tender, with meat that stuck to the bone. The rice was delicious and was cooked in a way I'm not used to. The Mac and Cheese was good although I do wish the cheese was a little more melted (granted I still ate the whole thing). However, the jerk chicken SLAPPED. The chicken had this cooked char on the outside, yet it wasn't dry. The jerk spice gave it a heat level that wasn't overpowering,more flavorful if anything. Had a chance to try Back A Yard a while back and I absolutely love this place. If you are looking for delicious Jamaican food this is a great spot for you. The food here is hearty and tasty. My favorite item to order here is the oxtail which comes with rice/beans and plantains. I loved that the oxtail is fatty and fall off the bone, and the curry it comes with goes perfectly with the rice. The plantain adds a nice hint of sweetness. I be like sounds good I take it. She also let me sample their home made juices, I opted for the ginger beer which was refreshing and had a nice heat at the back of my throat. They also have 3 different sauces ranging from mild to fairly hot "I asked for one of each" The run down: Never having had oxtail before... it was super moist beef (on the tail bones) with very soft fat. It tasted like a beef stew. The chicken: was beautifully seasoned, I little on the dry chewy side however "over cooked " but had good flavor. The rice: good but IMO had too much salt but paired well with everything else. This place is AMAZING! I have been meaning to try this restaurant for years, but just never got around to it. Until today! And boy am I mad at myself for not eating here sooner! Service: We did come here 30 mins prior to closing and asked the staff if we could eat inside since they were closing soon. She said no problem as our food should be fast since we were the only ones in there. Had a nice lunch here yesterday. It wasn't too busy and there were many tables to pick from. It's very spacious inside and all the tables were kept very clean. You place your order at the front counter and when your order is ready, they call out your name and you pick it up to bring back to your table. We decided to try the combo plate with jerk chicken and jerk pork, and another combo plate with jerk chicken and jerk salmon. Both came with beans and rice and plantains. The sauce that came on the side was so delicious. I put it on my rice and pork. The rice was very moist and tasted like coconut. There were only three beans in my rice. My husband's rice had no beans, surprisingly. The rice was very good despite not having beans. The plantains were my favorite. Sweet and comforting. Jerk salmon plate left my fiancee disappointed with the salmon portion at our recent visits. My go-to is always the jerk chicken plate because once I find something I like at a restaurant, I almost always get it again every time after that. It's filling, delicious, and super flavorful. The chicken is usually very well-seasoned and cooked thoroughly, though due to the seasoning, the inside appears a bit pink but it's not an undercooked pink. There was only one visit I had where my usual jerk chicken was dry and not nearly as tasty as it normally was. Probably an off day for the chef. The rice is a bit on the salty side, but this is not where you come for a healthy healthy meal. Plantains are deliciously sweet and there's a lot of them. It's a great bang for your buck as well! My fiancee prefers the jerk salmon plate instead, which is more expensive than the jerk chicken plate but has recently come with a quite small serving of salmon. The meal ends up being mostly the rice and plantains. But every time he still goes back to his preferred jerk salmon although he complains about the portion size for the cost here and there. read more

Back a Yard Grill is really solid! We came here for dinner on a Friday night around 7pm and there was a good amount of seating available. The restaurant definitely has a casual vibe -- you order at the counter and pick whichever table is available. The staff is super nice and helpful especially since this was our first time coming. They have their own parking lot shared with the other business in the center and it wasn't hard for us to find parking at all. We ordered 2 combos with Jerk Chicken, Oxtail and Salmon. All proteins were seasoned really well, with a lot of powerful flavors but leaned on the saltier side. They were all super tender though. If we were to come back we would go with the jerk chicken and the salmon because those proteins definitely hit the spot. The oxtail didn't really have too much meat but it was fall off the bone tasty. The texture of the rice was mushy and I personally didn't love the flavor of it but my partner really enjoyed the rice, so it's subjective to personal preference. The plantains were cooked really well and were delicious! The Mac and Cheese was nothing to write home about and didn't have any wow factor to it, so if you want a simple mac and cheese this will check the box. In addition to the food we got the Mango Passionfruit drink and it was good but definitely leaned artificially sweetened since it tasted like a syrup. I got 2 meals so I could taste each one and save the rest for my husband. I had ribs and fries. The rib meat was very tender and the bbq sauce was very flavorful and a thicker consistency. And the fries were extra crispy, just the way I like them. I also got the Jerk chicken with black beans/rice and the fried plantains. SO GOOD!! Super disappointing experience. Ordered the curry goat + jerk chicken combo and got literally less than 2 bites of goat & the rest was all bone. Brought this to the attention of the staff and they claimed there was "nothing they could do" because the manager wasn't there?? & had "no idea" when the manager would be in? Ironically the people at the table next to us had been waiting for a manager as well when we sat down and they were told the same thing "manager isn't here, there's nothing we can do". Came by for lunch the other day and it was a tasty albeit different experience. Parking was available in the lot in front and next to the restaurant. Ordering is done at the counter with staff that wore a uniform polo shirt. The interior of the restaurant is bare-bones. There is a ductless air conditioner against the wall along with a couple all gender toilets next to the cashier. There was line to order shortly after opening. Dining is exclusively indoors with ~15 or so tables from small 2 people mini tables through ~10 people round tables. Despite ordering for dine-in, it was interesting to see that our order was made in to-go containers which was helpful as the portions were huge. Initially, only plastic forks were available along with wet-naps. Later on, plastic knives along with napkins were placed next to the cashier to grab. Requested a few paper plates and was informed that only 2 were available, including one that was dirty... Started off with the oxtail plate and it was excellent. The coconut rice was fragrant and soft. This came with a side of super fresh plantains. The portion of oxtails were generous and fell off the bone. Flavors were bold and strong. Moved on to the curry goat and jerk chicken platter and it was also excellent. The curry goat was more boney and the jerk chicken pieces were very fresh and juicy. We were given a leg and a thigh. ~$13/head for lunch. They take credit cards, including NFC payments. read more

We love Back A Yard but for some reason there is always a ton of drama when we go. On our last visit our food took nearly 45 min (6:19 on our receipt to 7:03 came up) despite the restaurant being mostly empty and other patrons' orders coming up in a more normal timeframe. And the drinks machine had no ice. On the prior visit, totally inexplicably the drinks machine was gushing from all spigots all at once. They had to keep filling and replacing a huge plastic basin usually used for bussing dirty dishes until the drinks machine would stop. Sorry no fountain drinks that visit. But oh the food. The jerk chicken is amazing, and my wife and I love the plantains. The oxtail is fantastic too, and even the Mac n cheese side is wonderful. I used to really like this place. I tried it for the first time about a year ago and absolutely loved it. But today, I tried it again and was highly disappointed. Here are some issues.. 1. The portion sizes have decreased. 2. The plate I got was 80% French fries... 3. The barbecue chicken breast was extremely tough. This is the main reason we asked for a refund. It was inedible. 4. The coleslaw for my plate fit in a condiment cup. If you list something as a side, at least give a good portion. 5. The tofu in the tofu plate was charred, when we opened the lid to the bowl it smelled so bad. Almost like chemicals. 6. The initial server was rude, when I asked for recommendations she could barely tell me what was most popular. Other than the food, the restaurant is large and has lots of seating. It was very cold inside, so make sure to bring a jacket if you do plan to try this place. I was given a full refund upon returning my food, so at least i didn't have to eat this food.
