I find Chinese restaurant signs confusing. Invitations say Bamboo Garden Restaurant but it's also called Golden Bay Seafood Restaurant. Huh? Couldn't they take one sign off and put the real sign up? If I could read Chinese, it would be nice.. probably the Chinese name is consistent. I've come here several times, mostly for banquets and the dishes are all very good....jellyfish, chicken, lobster, noodles, red bean soup. What will gross you out is their bathrooms- not clean and towels overflowed from the garbage can. I saw a Windex bottle and wanted to use it to sanitize the toilets but I didn't. If you come Monday-Thursday's they have specials like Peking duck, two lobsters any style you want, and clams in black bean sauce for discounted prices. Tip: be sure to get the Peking duck! I have only been to sunset park for weekend dim sum experience. However, my boyfriend and i decided to give a try for a dinner menu. We couldn't decide on any place so we googled "best Chinese restaurants in Sunset Park" and Bamboo Garden was one of the few that came through search. We had spicy jelly fish, peking pork chops, and seafood noodles. Jelly fish and peking pork was on the recommended list and seafood noodles was something we added on just to try. Everything was good but not excellent. The place is a bit dingy even for typical Chinese restaurant standard and service was not very good. I hate saying service isn't good at Chinese restaurants because I think it largely has to do with the language barriers but even with my boyfriend who speaks Chinese... The service was not good. If I'm up before 9, I usually get up and come pick up my parents and take them here for the early bird special, which really isn't anything special at all. Yay! I'm definitely a fan! Bamboo Garden is one of a handful of eateries I go to every now and then. I like their dim sum dishes- fresh, hot, and ready to eat! I like their duck and roast pork. Pretty exceptional quality food. The only down about this establishment is that the service CAN get fuzzy every now and then. But hey, as long as my tummy is happy, then I'm fine. Prices are pretty decent. Not expensive at all- it's a great place to go to if you're not looking forward to making a fist sized hole into your budget. This review is specifically for the cold cuts... Of all the places I have been to in Brooklyn ChinaTown this is one of the best cold cut places around. With its easy proximity to Fei Long (and that great parking lot) it makes it a easy win to stop and pick up food from hear. I would definitely recommend the roast pork (char sui) or the crispy pork. Excellent Cantonese restaurant. At a recent family gathering we enjoyed delicious rainbow winter melon soup, lobster with ginger and scallion, hong kong style sweet and sour ribs, Chinese style steamed flounder, shrimp with lobster sauce. Everything was terrific. I was surprised by the huge size of the flounder for such a modest price, and the excellent skill of the waiter in perfectly de-boning it. This is some bland restaurant. Expecting some delicious food from here since I was invited for a banquet, ugh's this Cantonese restaurant is not that good. First of all, the restaurant setting is really off, how do you expect for people to navigate the restaurant preemies when everything is so out of place. The shark fin soup didn't taste real. For the banquet that i attended, I bet you they only used 1 piece of shark fin to make the soup for 13 tables. The starting appetizer had some hard pieces of hunan ham and the sea urchin was not tasty. Not only that the shrimp balls that they served tasted awful. It was shaped like golf balls and had no real taste to it. The lobster and the roast chicken was pretty good but everything else was so average. The service was also kind of non- existent; I had to flag down the waiter for more Budweiser and hot chili oil. ughs. I really really really want to give this place more than one star but I just can't justify a reason to give it two. Went here for a late Sunday brunch with a group of my friends and surprisingly were seated within minutes. Excited to see carts of dim sum being pushed around we quickly sat down at our table and requested for some water as we waited patiently for the carts to make their way into the back room. Now I get it, I'm Asian. And to be honest, I'm one of those Asians that you can't really pinpoint what ethnicity I am. So I wasn't surprised that when the first cart came our way I was the one picked out in our group and spoken to in Chinese. Now don't get me wrong, when I visit other countries I try my best to blend in and try to communicate with locals in their native tongue, but forgive me if I'm in Brooklyn and I have no clue what it is you're saying. That doesn't give you 1) an excuse to bypass our starving table and 2) get frustrated at me if I am politely trying to tell you I do not understand. What really got to me was that I could have sworn that as one of the ladies passing our table glanced our way she loudly cursed us out since we would have no idea what she was saying. Aside from the awful dim sum service there were other factors for why this place deserves one star. 1) When we first asked for water once we were seated, we had to ask it an additionally 4 more times in order to finally get our glasses. 2) The food was mediocre. Nothing to write home about. 3) As we were trying to pay our bill and collect cash one of the waiters suggested we break it out a certain way in which they would end up with a 25% tip. Yeah.. This is my go-to dim sum place when I'm in Bklyn. Their har-chang is the winner of the show here and their har-gao isalso lovely. Other good things: chicken feet - yummy and flavorful! pai-gu (pork pieces) sweet rice/pork/taro wrapped in banana leaves calms in black bean sauce fried foot-ball shaped taro/pork in sticky rice paste? The shu-mai, roast pork buns and intestines are average. The egg custard is too greasy and some of the other dishes are often cold. Bamboo Garden looks larger than it is. When you are outside, there are potted shrubs that are placed between each window and once you go in there is an area for buying roasted meats and takeout. In the dining area, there are no small tables in this restaurant. If you come in a group with less than four people you will find that you will be sitting in a table with others. I went here to yum cha (drink tea) and have dim dum. The dim sum are stacked in carts, which are pushed by ladies roaming the floor. Dim sum are small plates of assorted items. There are usually 3-4 of one item on a plate. Some are savory and some are sweet and some dim sum are steamed, baked or fried. My favorite dim sum is the har gow (shrimp dumpling) and when made correctly, it is a vision of beauty. The orange/pink of the shrimp shows through the glassine like skin. The skin is delicately pleated and then the dumpling is steamed. I have had shrimp dumplings with whole shrimps inside. Bamboo Garden didn't wrap the shrimp dumplings as pretty as I have seen, but it was very decent. I had fresh, whole shrimps in the stuffing and the skin was good, it held up and didn't get mushy. At Bamboo Garden, I tried: Fried Sesame Balls - could be thinner on the skin and needs a dollop more filling Fried Bitter Melon/Sesame Paste balls - could be thinner on the skin, good bitter melon flavor Watercress/shrimp dumpling - this one is delicious, beautiful see-through skin and nicely wrapped triangular shaped Beancurd roll - this one was heavy on the meat filling, but pretty good Tripe with daikon - big bowl, tripe was clean but some pieces were slimy tasting White tripe - pretty good, but needs a more flavor Coconut pudding - my favorite of the meal, light and refreshing Steamed fish balls - okay, but had lots of white pepper on top Small steamed buns - skip these, the skin gets punctured easily and all the soup runs out , also get the red vinegar to go with this, so you can dip it in Overall, it was a fairly respectable meal. Some of the items are a bit bland and need more flavoring. The food was not very greasy so that was a plus. The prices for dim sum are lower than some other restaurants in the neighborhood and decent for the dim sum. Small size dim sum are $1.90, Medium $2.50, Large $3.00, Special is $3.95. When the restaurant is completely full and there is an hour wait to be seated, issues come up. This is usually within a normal acceptable occurrence. Service is usually good and with minor to no issues. The food is usually good, about 85% of the time. This is actually a high percentage compared to similar styled Chinese restaurant and a good praise to them. However, if you are doing a massive party or having dinner during a prime day(holidays or "blessed" days) then the food is usually around 60%. This is the way it is with similar styled Chinese restaurant and within normal expectation. Anybody who has high expectations will be miserably disappointed at similarly styled restaurants. This restaurant is inexpensive compared to some of the other restaurants in the area. However, the cost of the meal also depends heavily on what you order. Seafood and fish are usually expensive yet will be the largest portion of many tables' meal,especially during prime days. Cheap and good meals can be achieved if you don't expect to be having lots of seafood, and knowing what to order. The dinner I had tonight was one of the best I have had recently. All the dishes were good, which is highly unusual. The service was good, as usual. The only issue we had was that the fried rice took too long because the kitchen had started serving the party of 2 dozen and so tables(approximate 240+ people) in the main dining area. This place is so bad! Came here with my friends because east harbor was booked for a wedding.. Or else would never have came in here. we ordered a ton of food and the portions are so small! We were all still hungry after a few hundred dollar bill. One in particular that was strange was we ordered the fried tofu with shrimp inside it along with conch. The waitress counted the six people at our table and it came out with exactly 6 pieces of tofu. I've never seen such a small order before and for the price of 20 something dollars. He called #39 for 9 people so we asked why he didn't call us. He said he can't give us a "big" table. Ugh. We had fucking 7 people, and you could have given us the big table cause in chinese restaurants like this, we share tables. So he gave our table to someone who came late and not everyone was there yet! I am never coming back here again. I had to argue with him about how to be fair to those that come early for seating. The food is the most delicious and tasteful. The pecking duck I'd rate is an A because I sometimes get the duck that's too oily or perfect. The buns, scallions and oyster sauce goes perfectly with the pecking duck. Their vegetables match my taste buds but some get stuck in my teeth and I'll have to use floss to get it out. Bamboo Garden is in the too often overlooked Brooklyn Chinatown in Sunset Park. There were four of us at table and we had a combination of dishes that were all quite good. My aunt, uncle, and cousin, who I was visiting, eat there often and say that they rarely have had a bad thing there. And the prices are great! The four of us had two appetizers and three main dishes plus drinks and the bill, with tip, was under $100. I recommend checking it out just to check it out, but also for the food. It appeared to me--and this is unscientific--that Brooklyn's Chinatown is larger than the ones in Philadelphia and Boston but that, being third after Manhattan and Flushing,Queens, no one thinks about it.
