Serves homemade style Indonesian fare. Friendly service. Great drinks like es teler, es cendol, and even es durian! Good selection of plates including selection of nasi ayam and noodle items. Beef rending was pretty good (if you like the dry type) as well as the gado gado salad and satay. The chicken curry laksa seemed a little watered down and was lacking something. It seems like they are missing the magic powder (msg) which is actually a good thing but some people might Miss it. Good clean modern dining room casual and kid friendly. Good variety of dishes but some were out when I went (lumpia, etc.) which was surprising and good if they are homemade. Es Teler was also pretty good but is served like a dessert instead of a drink. i can't believe i never knew this place existed!! i was searching for restaurants to try and thought this place was new until i read reviews from 2012!! what the heck? and i used to frequent the tea station there! so i came here last night, for the first time, for dinner. Small little restaurant and i noticed the owner and possibly his wife is working there. I ordered the indonesian fried rice with chicken ($7.50) and it was pretty tasty. A pretty good size portion for one person. A friend ordered this noodle soup and supposedly it comes with shrimp paste but we saw none. Another friend ordered the coconut rice with spicy egg, beef rendang, peanut and anchovies, etc (i think the dish was called Nasi Uduk). it was interesting how you get a rice and have different assortment of dishes around the rice. i guess it's sort of like a sampler or just rice with sides. The coconut rice was alright, a very light hint of coconut flavor. I guess i was imagining the Thai coconut rice version where it's sweet and with sticky rice. overall i think the experience was good, glad to know there's another decent restaurants nearby. The same people who own Indo Kitchen owns Banana leaf so expect similiar recipes. The menu is smaller. Food portions are bigger. The restaurant decor is bright and modern. Right now they are offering a special price of $5.99 for all the entrees on the menu. Ordered the nasi bungkus. Meat and veggie portions were generous, bigger than I've seen any Indo restaurants in L.A. Came with yellow dark meat chicken, beef rendang, fried potatoes, anchovies and peanuts, green bean, carrot and tempe curry, eggs balado, fried tofu, steamed rice and fried shallots. It's not a light meal and this particular one was really salty. The food came out cold which it didn't bother me too much but I would've preferred it to be hot. Yellow chicken was good, rendang had a lot of fat on it and wasn't as tender as I like. My husband ordered soto tangkar and lamb satay. The soup was a yellow curry base with beef, tripe, potatoes, carrots and beans. It was tasty over steamed rice but I kept running into little beef bone shards. Lamb was a little gamey and I'm not sure if they cooked it over a flame. This is good option for people who live in Temple City but because they seem to take shortcuts on recipes this place didn't stand out. read more

Won't ever be coming back again. Food is good but not good enough to justify the non-existent and bad service we received recently for us to come back. My sister and I came around 2pm on a Friday and it was empty. We ordered 3 dishes: fishcake appetizer, chicken satay, and martabak telur. We enjoyed all 3 dishes and even ordered a chicken pastry to go (not sure what it's called). However, everything took a while to come out and our server didn't even bother checking on us despite us being the only patrons the entire time. It seemed as if we were bothering her by dining in. When we got the bill, we gave a credit card and our server returns later and just blatantly says, "our card machine doesn't work. Do you have cash?" before abruptly walking away and going about her business again. We were astounded if that really just happened. She was not the least bit apologetic and should've said, "I'm sorry our card machine just broke down. Do you mind paying cash?" That would've been a million times better than what was actually said and handled. How was she so rude? Neither of us had cash and this isn't a cash only place. I ended up walking to the nearest Chase a block down to pull cash. Needless to say, I didn't leave a nice tip. read more

This place made me fall in love with Indonesian food! I recommend the Fried Egg and Tofu Salad and Satay Combination skewers (beef, lamb, chicken). The skewers come with two sauces, soy sauce and peanut sauce. Absolutely delish! The chicken noodle is a popular dish there too, I think it's okay. I am also a big fan of their drinks! The iced coffee was really good. I also tried a fruit drink that tasted like lychee and another drink that had green jelly and palm sugar. I'm not sure what the drinks are called since they're Indonesian names. But you must definitely try this place! First time having Indonesian food, and I have to say, I think I like it more than Thai food.. and I LOVE Thai food! Just the 3 of us girls, and my manager decided to order enough for a small village. Oxtail Soup: The broth reminded me of the base of chicken noodle soup.Think Mirepoix. For non-self-acclaimed-foodies/make-believe-chefs (like me), that means: celery, onion, and carrots. I think if I'm eating ethnic cuisine, it's kind of disappointing for it to taste like something from Home Town Buffet. This soup was also way too salty. I just don't think they did the oxtails justice. Curry Laksa Noodles This was a miss for me, too. The curry is like a light curry soup with thin vermacelli noodles, chicken, and rice cakes. Fried Noodles: MiGoreng Jawa This dish was decent. Personally for me, it's just like a south east version of Yakisoba. Good, but nothing to write home about. So why the 4 stars? Because the following 3 really knocked it out of the park for me. Combination Satay Skewers: Saucy, charred, and grilled to perfection lamb, chicken, and pork skewers. These are sooooooooooo delicious! It doesn't matter which one you pick up, they're all equally delicious in their own way. Satay done absolutely right. Get it. You won't regret it. Coconut Rice Combination: The rice had a hint of coconut milk to it, but it was no where near overpowering, which is good. It came with spicy-salty peanut anchovies, a piece of curry beef tendon, a fried chicken drumstick, some spicy potatoes, and a chili boiled egg. This was delicious, although I almost died cause I swallowed a piece of chicken bone. Scariest 15 minutes of my life. Anyways, get this. It's bomb. So...I'm going to update this place and give them that deadly 1-star! Came here the other night for dinner, upon parent's request. (I definitely wouldn't have wanted to return.) The place was packed. The problem was, the entire time we were waiting, there was an open table...that just wasn't cleaned! Oh look! Another table that has opened up...but wasn't cleaned! To add on to the extensive waiting time was the fact that the lady didn't even see us standing at the door! After a while, we decided to just sit at a dirty table...which after a minute or so they cleaned our table. I'm surprised how slow and disorganized their service is. So, every Hong Kong style cafe has Indonesian fried rice in the SGV. It's good, but not great. Gets the job done. But here at Banana Leaf? You have INDONESIAN FRIED RICE. There is a difference. It's like, I'm going to panda express for Chinese food kinda difference. The amazing that is real authentic Indonesian fried rice cannot be described. You order it. And it gets made, and diet fads like low carb diets go out the door! Carbs? What carbs? I don't see any because I ate it all!!! Eat this rice and let me know if you can stop. I dare you! I grew up in Indonesia and moved here as a kid BUT... my Indonesian is no good so when I'm talking about the food I'm gonna sound like a noob. But really... The food is good. I don't eat Indonesian food that often because you can't really find it just anywhere. My parents don't really cook either so I'm very thankful for this place! So I've been here a few times, and there were several memorable items. - Satay (goat, beef, and chicken) - they're legit (all 3). They're not the best I've ever had but definitely comparable to some I've had in Indonesia. Tender, moist, and deliciously sauced with peanut and sweet soy sauce. - Nasi ayam kremes (chicken with crispy.. stuff.. and rice??!?!) - So CRISPY! Haha it comes with a big mound of rice, chicken that has been fried (I think), and it's topped with delicious crispy crumbs... (??) Basically it's like a fried chicken on crack. Be sure to eat with the sambal (chilli paste/sauce) that they have. SO GOOD! Chicken cooked perfectly and so moist and so tender. Drooling - Nasi ayam penyet - kinda similar to the above but without the crisps. I suppose more flavor in the chicken, and it comes with its own giant pile of chili paste... YUM. It's so good. Also have tried some soups, other rice dishes, etc but I don't know what they're called (sorry)... but I remember everything being delicious. The chicken curry laksa was wonderfully light and the nasi uduk was packed with curries, meats and veggies. The nasi bungkus paled in comparison because it just didn't have that much stuff. I just liked their siomay, pempek basically the appetizer or simple one. Once it arrived in my house, it spilled everywhere and I don't know how to describe. Just not good at all . I was so happy to see an Indonesian restaurant down the street from me...finally a place closer than my aunts to go to for authentic food. I was happy to see that they don't put fruit salad in their chendal/? (Why would somebody do such a thing?) Their peanut sauce rocks cuz its NOT from a bottle, it brought me back to the old days watching my grandmother stirring up on the stove all the ingredients while telling me stories about our family . I have always grown up with the idea that peanuts belong in peanut sauce so the bottle with that smooth sauce has always disturbed me...it should disturb you too so don't do it. The rice was proper and flavorful. Properly cooked rice tastes especially good by itself. It has aroma and a distinct flavor too it. I have noticed that so many people are used to nasty rice so when the chance presents itself to them to actually try some good stuff, they drown it out of habit or turn it into a holder for salt and other stuff on their plate ruining their chance to actually try some real stuff. The noodles were wonderful. OMG I can still taste it. I had the thin noodles. The meats were great and very flavorful...this is my key word for the place...FLAVOR! If you are into the medium and lower spice range...beware. I would ask for a sample taste of the sauces. I am half Indonesian and I can take a bite without crying for liquid to put out the flames but I was a bit taken for surprise with their heat range...the medium hot was more like super hot/spicy so beware. I drank lots of water and soda to cool my mouth and waved a million times to my palette which is symbolic for saying " OMG THIS IS SPICY" but it never cooled my mouth of spices nor did it stop my hand from shoveling in more of the hotter dishes...it must be the, FLAVOR! My car smelled so good on the way home. The left overs made my car smell yummy in the morning too. TY INDONESIA. When I think of Indonesian food I think of my bog family sitting around smiling and laughing and sharing their day but I wouldn't be able to fit my family in their since its a bit small. If only I can give a zero star... I ordered takeout last week, chicken curry to be specific. Not only did it taste awful. There is no chicken. Yes, chicken curry without chicken. It's the worst takeout experience ever. I felt ripped off completely. The plain rice that came with it didn't taste fresh at all. So basically all I got was a cup of curry sauce and stale rice for $6. Unbelievable. I was going to call them to get a refund. But it was late and I simply tossed out the whole thing. First off, this place is cash only. Haven't had a whole lot of experience with Indonesian food, but here are some key takeaways. Most dishes come with eggs. Lots of rice dishes with eggs. And there are curry dishes. Had the banana leaf plate which came with chicken (with bones) curry, another curry that looked like oxtail with a triangle of tofu, mixed veggies, and peanut with anchovies that I had substituted for something else. Overall, I enjoyed the dish, but would have preferred my food to come out piping hot and have a bit more curry to put on my rice! My friend got the Traditional Smashed Chicken which was quite tasty and had a nice fried taste/texture. read more

My gosh. This place was great. I came here by accident because another Indonesian Restaurant was closed. I was by myself and ordered a fried fish tilapia thing for two people. It was cooked as per the suggestion of the waitress. It was fried and crispy great. I also had an egg noodle dish and it was the best "Chow Mein" that I had ever eaten. I asked what was the secret, and they said that it was the sweet soy sauce. Well, I finished the two dishes meant for two people and I was completely satisfied. Came here based on a thought that I haven't had much experience with Indonesian food in my life and hoped to remedy that. I didn't actually feel particularly hungry but ended up eating a hell of a lot. With my friend we ate a skewer appetizer, lumpia appetizer, laksa and a chicken with rice dish that I forget what the name of is. I'll get it out of the way, but the skewers alone I think is worth coming back for because they were pretty damn good. Especially with that peanut sauce, I feel like I could put that sauce on anything and it would make it taste amazing. The appetizer comes with about 6 skewers along with the peanut sauce and I think hoisin sauce. The lumpia was really hot, which should be a given since it's a fried food, and it had a good taste to it. I would wait a bit before eating it though, almost waiting until your actual meal comes to get the full flavor of it without burning your mouth. The laksa had the taste of a really light curry which I liked. It had a light refreshing essence about it. The rice and chicken dish had a taste that I couldn't put my finger on which annoyed me for a while. It was good, don't get me wrong, but it was like some spices that I don't recognize with honey or something.... I don't know, it was sweet, but not sugary sweet. The only complaint I really have about the place that some of the dishes and utensils are a little dirty when given to you. I'm sure you can get new ones from the staff or just wipe it off as it's not that big of a deal. But that prevents me from giving it a 5 star. Ordered nasi tumpeng (indonesian tumeric rice) for uncle 70s birthday. it was $140 for the whole big tumpeng. the tumpeng came with: - ayam penyet (indonesian style fried chicken) - other than the shrimp paste chilli, the chicken was my favorite dish. it was very soft, flavorful, and a bit crispy. - kremes (Indonesian style crunchy thing that you eat with the chicken) - not bad but the kremes was too thick to my liking and not crunchy enough - empal (indonesian style sweet pan fried beef) - the beef was super dry even though it was soft enough.. not the best empal for sure. - tempeh orek (indonesian style spicy soy bean with anchovy and peanuts) - the orek is no where close to the actual indonesian style. the anchovy and peanuts was way too big for the dish and not crunchy at all. mehhhh - perkedel (indonesian style mashed potato) - the potato was hard and cold. another forgetable dish - sambal terasi (indonesian style chilli with shrimp paste) - my favorite out of everything.. nothing can beat indonesian chilli paste.. so good, flavorful, and i actually dont mind eating the chilli by itself without anything. - shredded egg - nothing special about this one. everyone can make it at home, just fried egg and cut it in thin slices. - the yellow rice - good but nothing special. overall, the tumpeng came in such a nice presentation. i dont think the whole tumpeng itself worth $140 but i guest they must have spent alot of time making it. so labor cost there.. ill give this place a solid 3stars for the tumpeng. i might come back and try their other dishes.. until then! read more

Only one waitress for the whole restaurant, not her fault she was behind the whole time, the restaurant needs to hire another person in the front. The coconut rice doesn't have any coconut taste to it at all and the dish of vegetable came way later then the rest of the dishes. Very good food. Variety of Indonesian food, starting from very delicious appetizer, main entree, and dessert. I am Indonesian but I don't really eat indonesian food since I was raised outside the country. I decided to give this place a try. Wow. The combination satay was too good. They grill them fresh and I DON'T mind waiting 15-20 mins for my satay. Avocado juice... yummm... fluffly avocado mixed with condensed milk and just a few swirls of chocolate around the inner glass was soooo delicious. The beehun goreng was excellent!! Fried chicken, the sambal, the pancake with peanuts, chocolate and cheese melted together was super good. Flavorful, worth the try. Lenny, a server who works there, is very friendly. She serves well. Important to note, I viewed a wok about a foot off the ground filled with oil and chicken. This was in the chicken as seen through the curtain on the side of kitchen. If there is one cuisine near to my heart that would be Indonesian. I have eaten lots of it. Banana Leaf is an okay place. The food was great, the place is clean and they use a ceiling fan (makes it feel like Indonesian food shacks back home). It was my first time at his particular place and for me i have to try he nasi padang in every Indonesian joint. I have to say that it is good. The rendang is good, the chicken and the eggs and the veggies too. It's good, but nothing special. It's just okay. Would I come back? Yes definitely I would. Just don't think I would crave it. Not my cup of tea. The BBQ platter we ordered was not fit for human consumption. Ok, that is a bit harsh, it was actually barely edible. But since I don't need the extra calories, I would much prefer the food I consume to be tasty. The chicken was overcooked, some pieces were stone tough, while others were mush. The tofu was "stinky" (simliar to the steam stinky tofu in Taiwan), but tasted pretty nasty (I guess I am not used to eating "sour" tofu. The pork was so hard; I thought it was some form of preserved fish. How about the soybean patty, what is that? There were some remedy to the meal, I did enjoy the #17 flat noodle and the on-choy. Should of just ordered those two item and left the restaurant with a $15 bill and a decent meal. Service was super slow; I had a hard time flagging them down in this small restaurant. Juicy, flavorful, drizzled with sweet soy sauce and fried shallot, that's how. Best I've ever had. Crispy outside, juicy inside. - Risoles: deep fried breaded dough, with creamy stuff inside. I have never had one I didn't like. $4 for 2: pricey but I would order it again. - Nasi Jogja combo: comes with white rice, chicken curry, jackfruit curry, and one other item that look like red beans. I've had this at Jogja. I liked it then, but BL!s jackfruit curry was one noted sweet - not my cup of tea. $7.50. - A combo platter with no rice (think it was #49): it has smashed chicken, beef, tempeh, eggs, tofu, sambal. $11.99. - Nasi Kuning: yellow turmeric rice. Ok. - Nasi Uduk: of all the rice flavors, get this one. - Martabak w/ chocolate and peanut: oh.my.gawd. I don't care if it's not fresh, it's martabak and it's fabulous. Terrific martabak actually. I don't care if it comes from a microwave, all my childhood and happy memories are presented in that dessert. $2.50 per slice (4 to 6 bites - Happy soda: ohh that's why my parents add sweetened condensed milk w/ soda water. My hubs never had this before, I told him I can totally make this. Ranch 99 sells Rose syrup. - AVOCADO smoothie: creamy goodness but instead of mocha syrup, BL use chocolate syrup. Okay let me start off by saying that coming here hungry on a Sunday afternoon isn't a good idea. They were definitely understaffed and everyone here was running around the entire time. We ordered the: - Nasi uduk: The dish consisted of coconut rice accompanied by various sides of beef curry, potatoes, an egg, fried chicken, and soy beans. I didn't have the egg or the soy beans because they looked spicy and I don't usually eat spicy. The potatoes were spicy but they were pretty good. The dish itself was really flavorful. The chicken looked really dry, but was actually really good. The rice was what really stole this dish. It was so flavorful and went perfectly with each side. Definitely a must get! - Sate Babi: These were pork skewers that were accompanied by a peanut sauce. As with the other dish, the flavors were really strong and really good. The peanut sauce complimented the skewers really nicely. - Mie goreng jawa: This was a simple noodle dish, but much more flavorful than any I've tried. However, after the other two dishes, this dish seemed too tame in comparison. Overall, the wait for the food was what brought this review down from a 5-star review.
