Save your time and money and try another sushi spot. I'm sure you can find another one. Don't get me wrong, the sushi is ok, it's just not worth it. My buddy had a coupon from restaurant.com, but apparently it was from previous management, so they did not accept it. At that point I thought to myself, "let's roll out and find something else, but my friend said we should give it a shot, we're already here." Fair enough. The owner decided that we could order $50 worth of stuff for $25 or something to that effect. We ordered a sashimi assortment and some rolls, and to be honest, I don't even remember the names of them. The sashimi was good, but I feel like we got short changed on it. The pieces were kind of hit or miss. The rolls are a bit overpriced, $11-12 for the good ones. Don't get me wrong the food was ok, but it wasn't great. And maybe that's the problem, I've just had better, but this place didn't really satisfy. The venue is small, kinda like a hole-in-the-wall in a shopping lot and it was very quiet, although I think it was a Sunday evening we came in, but this place couldn't fit large groups of people. Amazing gem in a strip mall. The fish was beautiful and fresh, gyoza was perfect, edamame was hot and just tender crisp, the miso was even above average. My husband and I were thrilled. Ambiance is non existent but the service and the food make up for it. The total bill was close to what we pay at Tomi or Akane so it's not as if it's a bargain. It is a great place in a weird location and we will be back often. I wouldn't go on a first date but now it is first on our list for sushi. read more

This restaurant serves a wide range of Japanese items like udon, bento boxes, and sushi. I'm a big ramen fan, and I should've known that the ramen here would be crap after only seeing a very small section in their big menu listing ramen. I ordered it anyway, because I always have a craving for some good ramen. My mistake, as the server brought a steaming hot bowl of blandness to my table. The noodles were definitely not made in-house, the soup was not savory at all, and there was only some cabbage and bean sprouts as garnish = no color, bad presentation. My friend had the oyako don, which had equally poor presentation and lack of flavor. Safe to say I won't be coming back here again, when there's so many other Japanese restaurants within a short drive away that can more adequately satisfy my ramen craving. read more

Took the kids here for a lunch sushi date, ordered the bento lunch boxes with tempura (good.. Some pieces were soggy, they needed to dry the oil a little more before it was plated) chicken teriyaki (blah....no flavor, poor quality) California rolls (decent, for imitation crab mixture) and shashimi (great dark red color, nice and fresh, totally delicious) service was good for accommodating kids. When we first arrived, there were only a few people in the restaurant. Luckily, i guess we got there just in time as a few minutes after we got there, the place was full. We got there at 7:30 pm on Thursday. We ordered the bento box, sashimi appetizer, and tempura udon. The bento box was good, portions of the salmon teriyaki and katsu was not huge, but the tempura was plentiful. The tempura udon was good. Overall both service and food was good. Definitely 3.5 stars. Look twice, otherwise you'll miss this little gem hidden in this Sunnyvale strip mall. Has the feel of a Japanese cafeteria, i.e. nothing fancy, but it was half filled on a midweek night. Apparently word was out that this was a place to go. I was just late getting the message! We started off with the prerequisite Edamame $3.95 just to curb the hunger pangs. You can't really mess up boiling and salting soy beans, so nothing to report there. Then the rolls came. Rock & Roll inside: shrimp tempura, outside: unagi $8.95 In & Out Roll inside: Chef's choice, outside:rainbow $9.25 Crazy Roll inside: tuna, salmon, hamachi, outside: tobiko $8.50 Decent sized and fresh, meaning no hint of fishiness. I especially liked the In & Out Roll, which seemed to have more sashimi than rice. When I was paying the bill, the waitress brought my receipt back to tell me to take the tip off, since it was already included in the bill (coupon). Very nice of them to point that out and not make me pay extra. Kudos to the wait staff! Definitely worth the crawl to Sunnyvale. Went to try this sushi place again to give it a try after 3 years of not going there. Was not impressed again with the quality of the food there. The sushi was the "Korean-type" of rice with no seasoning had the tonkasu which was grossly over-cooked and dry and had the chicken teriyaki both on the dinnerbox. Chicken was cooked well but like it was boiled and then teriyaki sauce poured over it. Service was good and the restaurant was also decorated well. But i don't think this would be my first choice, if you're used to having good Japanese Sushi read more

Sad to say, we still haven't found what we're looking for. :( We ordered both cooked food and sushi. Everything was edible, if not especially memorable. The saba shioyaki as ok...the tuna sashimi was a little less than ok. The salad was generic, it's always the dressing that makes or breaks it. Great place! Don't let appearance fool you. It doesn't look very fancy, but the quality of sushi, price and server are incredible. We go to this place almost every month for the last year. Always very happy with it. You gotta try their special rolls - they are delicious. Let me tell you why I gave this establishment only one star. It wasn't the food, because in all honesty by Bento box was beyond expectations of the 8.75 that they charge for it. What really sucked was the service and treatment from the staff. After dropping off a prescription off at CVS I decided to trudge over to Bay Sushi for some lunch. Everything went ok after I took my seat at the sushi bar, ordered by Bento box, got my Bento Box. I was halfway through and looked around to realize that I was the only one left in the restaurant. At that point the waitress came over and dropped the ticket on the bar without saying one word to me and walked away. This is when things were not ok. The Owner/Chef came out of the kitchen, sat a table facing me the whole time I was finishing up. To make it even worse, a woman who I believed to be his wife came out of the kitchen also, stood next to the table and just stared at me. It got to the point of being so uncomfortable that I was basically stuffing the rest of the food in my mouth so I could just finish and leave. At one point I looked at at the owner and said I am trying to eat as fast as I can. He kinda gave this weird laugh and said "oh, don't worry about it". Well, if that was the case then why did they continue staring at me as though I was a nuisance by being there still. I had already put cash out to pay the bill, which the waitress took without saying one word, brought it back without saying one word, then took the tip without saying one word. At that point, I got up and bolted out of there as fast as I could. These people need classes in restaurant 101 on how to treat their customers better. I might have gone back for the food again at some point but NOT NOW!!! Had to be one of the rudest experiences I have experienced at at a restaurant. Never will go back to this place!! read more

My wife told me about this restaurant and I made the mistake of discounting her praising it for the past five years. I have now eaten there at least 8 times an have been consistently amazed at the quality and value of the lunch and dinners. Friendly servers, and cozy, informal surroundings.. The sushi exceeds that which I have had in San Jose, Los Gatos and Saratoga. Loved the California roll and while I never order eel, I snagged one of my wife's and enjoyed it as well. This is clearly one of the hard to find and worth the search places that I would recommend to anyone who does not require a white table cloth! read more
