I enjoyed the Flounder basket and my husband was pleased with the Low Country Boil. Waitress was less than stellar...not friendly and welcoming, never offered refills and overall sucked as a waitress spending more time smoking or on her phone than taking care of her customers. Helpful suggestion...if you work at a restaurant that offers raw oysters, know how to open them so you can assist your customers. read more

Alright. We wanted a beer and some lunch, so we picked Bayou Cafe based on the location and the menu posted by the street. If you judge based on the price of a burger, you chose wisely. Up a flight of ancient stairs to walk into the cool, inviting interior. It's got a nice wooden bar area with plenty of seating, and some great river views. Ask what's good. Jordan the bartender recommended some great options. In the end, I chose the seafood gumbo, but with all the choices, I don't think I could have missed with any of them. It was hot and delicious, served with some perfectly steamed rice and a fresh corn-bread muffin. I took some liberal doses of their house hot-sauce--a fantastic concoction of spices--and it made my gumbo perfect! My buddy ordered a burger, which probably isn't the best choice in a Cajun joint but it turned out great. Seriously--cooked medium with an artisan bun and hot, crisp crinkle-cut fries. Friends, this hole-in-the-wall place is in a 300 year old building. Remember that! Marvel at the history, enjoy the food, and say hi to the crew in there. You'll love it! read more

Definitely a hidden gem in downtown Savannah! I stopped in for lunch and it was AMAZING! There was only 1 waitress who did a great job of balancing the bar & multiple tables. The sweet tea was perfect! I ordered a cup of red beans & rice, 1/4 lb crab cake & catfish nuggets. The wait was well worth it!!! I paired my crab cake with a cajun remoulade! I devoured everything besides a tiny piece of crab cake that I wanted to save for later. The view of the river added a nice touch to my experience. I cannot wait to return & explore the rest of their menu, and to catch some of the live bands that perform there. read more

My first time at this restaurants. My son and I wandered in after looking for some Cajun food in Savannah and found this one on Yelp. The alligator bites were amazing, along with the very flavorful sauce that came with them. I had the seafood gumbo at the recommendation of our server and it did not disappoint. Personally, I would have liked a little more heat though. My son had the jambalaya and mixed in some of their homemade hot sauce which added some much needed flavor. His alligator Po'boy was very good and topped with the same sauce as came with the bites. My shrimp and grits were seasoned well and very filling. The service was excellent. read more

The food here was great! I had the shrimp po' boy and I tell you I wish the sandwich was bigger. The horseradish sauce on it is one thing because it adds the right amount of bite to the sandwich, but the shrimp that was on the sandwich was so plump and juicy and was breaded to perfection. It wasn't overly breaded like many places tend to do where you lose the taste of the actual shrimp. I walked in and it was completely empty and the guy who waited on me was really cool and laid back. Based on the food alone I would definitely go back. The only reason it gets 4 stars is due to the fact that when I went to pay at the bar I was going to get a drink but there were gnats flying around in that area and it made me reconsider. Went in this place hoping for some good seafood based dishes. it's a little dirty and out dated but we gave it a try. Our waitress was super friendly and she always refilled out water. The food, however, was meh. My husband had the seafood gumbo that came with a corn muffin. It was just ok. Nothing special and the muffin was really sweet. I had the fried fish wrap. It sounded delicious when reading the menu so I was excited to try it. Then when I took my first bite I watched and grease and white cream dripped out of the wrap. The wrap was supposed to have fried fish, cheese, cabbage, and the homemade remoulade sauce...... instead it was a poorly fried fish with grease trapped in the breading and a mountain of coleslaw... I tried just eating the fish out of the wrap- and even our of the breading- but it was less than ideal. The side of coleslaw looked just as bad sitting in a bucket of creamy oily yuck. read more

Let me start by giving kudos to the Bayou Cafe website photographer who made this place seem larger than what it actually is. We walked into the place right behind a family of five. There was a man (Red Shirt) sitting at the door in a red Bayou Café t-shirt. Noticing that the seating area in the restaurant was about 20x16 and it was full, the man of the family asked Red Shirt how long the wait for seating would be. Red Shirt looked up from his reading and said, "I don't know, if somebody gets up, you can sit down." Huh? Anyway, I noticed there were five empty seats at the bar so I asked my sister if she wants to sit at the bar. We did. We placed our orders - I ordered the Flounder Fish N' chips basket with fries and coleslaw, she ordered the Chicken on the Bayou and jambalaya. After almost an hour of waiting for our food, I asked the bartender about when our food would be out. He went to check and said, "it'll be out in five minutes (holding up his hand, palm outward and revealing five fingers in case I didn't know what five how many 'five' is). I thanked him. My sister and I continued our observations of people. I noticed the guy setting up to play guitar. He moved a chair away from the table directly in front of him and placed it at a table where an older couple was sitting. As he shoved the chair into the man's knee he said, "here's a free chair for you" (along with a bruised knee). Finally, I'm so annoyed, I loudly say, "Okay", so loud that my sister gave me the "side eye". Then I look at the bartender and say, "15 minutes ago you told us that our food would be out...do you all only have one person who's doing all of the cooking?" He goes to check on it again; comes back and tells us that it's coming right out. At this point, Red Shirt has gotten up from his post and came over to the bar and tells the bartender to "put me down for one cluster (holding up one finger - you know, in case the bartender doesn't know how many one is) the takes two steps then quickly turns back and says, "make it two (while holding up his index and middle finger - you already know why). Red Shirt then walks into the kitchen. Two minutes later, he emerges with a pan that has two clusters and a piece of corn on the cob on it. He goes back over to his post at the front entrance and sits down to enjoy his clusters. MEANWHILE, my sister and I are still waiting for our food and it's been a little over an hour. The bartender is mixing a drink for someone. He pours the drink into the glass. There's some left in the shaker so he pours it into two plastic shot cups. As he's doing this, I say to my sister, "maybe these people aren't so bothered by the long wait because they're all drinking the night away. The bartender placed the glass drink on the counter for the waitress and set the two shot cups in front of me and my sister. (Dude, if we'd wanted alcoholic beverage, we would have ordered one and it would not have been a white Russian). I tell my sister that I read an article that you shouldn't drink beverages that include milk or cream at bars. Our food finally comes out and I look at these tiny pieces of over-fried and dry flounder and I'm extremely disappointed. I tasted my fries and they were cold, the fish was warm. Then my sister takes a fry, bites it, gives me an "are you kidding me" look and says, "we waited an hour for cold Ore-Ida fries?" The bartender brought me some fresh and hot fried. I asked her how her jambalaya was and scoops some up and says, "Well, considering it's been sitting in that pot all day, it's mushy and mediocre." During our long wait, another lady comes behind the bar to make a drink. She has in her hand what looks like a container of tomato juice. She looks at it, smells the top, then pours some in a small plastic shot cup, and tastes it. I pointed this out to my sister and she says, "the expiration date on the bottle is 7/19/2017". The lady finished making the drink and delivered to the customer. We finished our mediocre meal and left (left the dry fish and mushy jambalaya on the counter). read more

We came here late on a Thursday night with a group of six of us about an hour before closing. I had a crawfish poboy that was pretty good, and my boyfriend had Cajun fish sandwich that was small but delicious. The beer was cold and did the job. The music, however, was AMAZING. I loved the energy, and will be back more nights during my trip. The only reason I am not rating five stars is because it took well over an hour to get our food, and half of our table were done with their food before the other half got theirs. After waiting 40 minutes for the food we ordered the cooks got into a curse word filled fight in front of all of the customers, shortly after we were told by our waitress that "a whole bunch of dumb shit just happened and we would not be getting our food tonight".. Okay let me explain why I give Bayou Cafe 5 stars. If it were in New York. Meh. But in a foodie city like Savannah that is known for southern and seafood, this is an undiscovered gem. It is a dive! Be ready. If your liberal and easily offended, stay home. This is a place for country/rock and regular folk. While that's not me..the food did not disappoint. My wife and I stopped in to Bayou Cafe for dinner. We knew to expect a cafe nestled within a local dive bar, and that's exactly what we found. What we weren't expecting was the food to be as good as it was... which is an understatement. The alligator gumbo was delicious, as were the shrimp and grits. Both are recommended. My spouse and I dined at the Bayou Cafe in April 2015. I give this a two-star experience for diners. Drinkers may have a different (probably better) experience, and clubbers might be better yet. The best thing about the food was the price. This is a far more frugal option than the touristy seafood places on River Street or Bay Street. However, the food quality pretty much matches the price, so overall it's not a memorable situation. My spouse's Shrimp Po'Boy was pretty average. After all, it's fried shrimp on a sandwich. My low country boil was over-boiled, with the seasoning basically just dumped on (not cooked in), and the kitchen ran out of corn so they put on a couple of extra boiled (overboiled) potatoes. Service was pretty spotty and at times unprofessional. it's one thing if the servers want to duck out back for a smoke. It's another when they sit next to the front door for a smoke and just wave you into the place. Bayou Cafe probably does fine as a dive bar with food on the side, but it's not a great spot if you just want dinner. read more

Stopped in for lunch. we were on a 40 day trip up the coast so I do not recall exactly what I had. Cup of seafood chowder which was fantastic. Smart to put it in a coffee cup since they are meant to keep something warm. It tasted vey good but needed some spice. Oh, shrimp queso. The queso was really good and they give you tons of it but the chips were stale. They were seasoned well and they were a nice thickness but stale is never good. He had a poboy which was good. We came here for dinner and they have a great little front deck where we were able to sit with our dog and really take in the air and appreciate the view of the old historical buildings that surround the restaurant, not to mention the river right outside. Great ambiance, great service and the even the patrons were friendly and welcoming towards us and even our dog. This place felt more like a neighborhood bar than a tourist trap, so it was nice to get that feel during our first night visit to Savannah. The beer recommendations by the server were spot on, and the food we ordered was delicious and professionally presented. The blackened fish and the seafood gumbo we ordered were very tasty and fresh. Ate dinner here on a summer weeknight. Approx 8 tables inside and 3 outside. Only one waitress, one bartender and one cook. Food was fine, atmosphere was amusing but wait was LOOOOONG!!! We were about to walk out without food when our order finally showed up 1 hour after ordering. At 45 minutes I asked the waitress, she checked and said 5 more minutes, at 10 minutes I went to the kitchen and offered to help if it would get us something to eat. The atmosphere of this place is really great. They also have a great music choice which isn't to bad when you're having a meal. The Cajun & Creole selection is great and me being born and raised in Louisiana I always look for places like this. The only down side I have is the red beans & the pound crawfish. I didn't really enjoy how hard and non seasoned the red beans were. They tasted as if they were made in a hurry not really boiled long enough.
