If you're looking for spicy crawfish this is the place and when oysters are in season I am stuck living here

A few friends and I decided to visit this establishment after I had found so many positive reviews on yelp. While the place doesn't look the most decorative on the outside, the decor inside was pleasant. The food was either hit or miss, depending on what you ordered. The po' boys were delicious. No doubt about it. However, sandwiches are bountiful in restaurants these days -- so not a must have, by any means. Paw Paw's fried basket was good too, but once again, it's no feat to create decent fried catfish, fried shrimp, and fries. Here's the evening ruiner: the Morgan City Catfish. It was a pecan crusted, grilled catfish on white rice. Not good at all. The fish was okay, the sauce overpowering, and white rice was nonexistent. I ended up just eating the fish with another dish's tartar sauce. Poor. The overwhelmingly positive reviews may be somewhat attributed to the fact that this place is open til 3am. Sure, it wasn't terrible, but any food tastes great after a joyful night of drinking. read more

Not what I was expecting, but not bad. First of all though, note that this is "Tex-Cajun"...not Cajun. So if you come expecting cuisine from South Louisiana, you'll be disappointed. If you come expecting cuisine with a South Louisiana twist, then you won't. So, they get thumbs up from me for: Chalmette mac & cheese. You can tell they use fresh jalapenos. It was nice and creamy and had a good flavor and the little bit of debris on top was a nice touch. My poboy was just okay. I had the surf & turf, since I couldn't decide between the fried shrimp or the debris...why not get both! I did like the shrimp better than the debris, but at the same time, I kinda liked the debris. My "beef" with it was that the gravy flavor was good, but the meat itself had an "off" taste. I have noticed this at other places and I'm not sure if it just means it's a cheap cut of meat or what. I feel like if that odd flavor in the meat was absent, I would've enjoyed the poboy more. I upgraded to red beans and rice for my side, which was interesting. Again, this is not legit red beans and rice, so it has a very unusual flavor. Really smoky, more so than usual RB&R. It tasted fine, but wasn't anything better than okay. My husband had the blackened fish poboy, and he said he enjoyed it. I tried it but it tasted like it had marinara sauce on it, which was kinda odd to me. Was not a fan. He loves shoestring fries, so he was happy to have those. They were just okay to me, but I'm not a shoestring fry fan, so take that as you will. Overall, I'd give it 2.5 stars, but I'm rounding up to 3 for the Chalmette mac & cheese and the fried shrimp. read more

The poyboy I had here was BETTER than the poboy I had in New Orleans! I even went to eat with a friend who is from New Orleans and he said that he thought it was better than some places he'd been in New Orleans as well. I got the Bedtime Bayou Poboy which is shrimp, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and the special BB sauce (I actually asked our server what that sauce was called because it was so good). I only ordered a half po boy and thank God I did!! It was massive and I couldn't even finish it. I could tell the shrimp was battered in house because it wasn't that crappy chain restaurant fry to it. The only thing was that there was A LOT of lettuce. At the end I just took the top off of the poboy and put some shrimp and a bit of lettuce in it to make my own smaller poboy. We ordered a basket of fries for 3 people and still didn't finish them. They were good, the kind of skinny shoe string fries that you don't find in many places. Just a classic taste there. We had ordered the Boudan Balls as our appetizer. 4 huge fried suckers! They were spicy and hot and scrumptious! It's got the right feel inside. Small, unpretentious, cozy, laid back and cool. There was only one server working at 6 pm on a Monday and we were taken care of the whole time. Total bill was pretty cheap. My poboy was $6.75 and my husbands was $13. BB's Cafe is your Po' Boy destination in Houston...'nuff said. But, let's say I was writing a review right now, and couldn't simply leave it at "'nuff said"...y'all want the details, right?!? With more to be said, here are your top 5 reasons that BB's has earned all 5 of its stars: 1.) Late Night - For Houston being the 4th largest city in the country, I'm always surprised that there aren't more late night dining options (which is a struggle when I have a craving for a Big Apple greasy spoon at 4am or for breakfast, but let's not dilute this review with that rant :) ...However, BB's Cafe is far and away Houston's late night haven, open until 3am on weekends. Once you get done closing the bars on Westheimer, there's no better spot to go for your drunk food. 2.) They Get the Po' Boys Right! - Wrong or right, my first criteria for judging a Cajun restaurant is usually the po' boys. The bread, the ingredients, how it's dressed...it all has a HUGE baring on the total po' boy package. Fortunately for BB's (and, more importantly, fortunately for you should you find yourself there), their sandwiches get it right on all fronts, from the fluffy french bread, to the variety of traditional and non-traditional po' boy selections. I've given about half of them a try, but I always seem to come back to the "Midnight Masterpiece" (melt-in-your-mouth roast beef debris) and the "Rock Out Then Knock Out" (Mississippi catfish). 3.) Oh Yeah, There's More on the Menu Than Just Po' Boys! - You want red beans and rice?...Check! You want an Abita beer?...You got it! You up early enough for breakfast?...Let's go! Crawfish?...Duh, it's a Cajun restaurant! The greatness here doesn't stop at the po' boys, whether you're in the mood for a Texas-influenced Cajun entree or want to stick to the salads. The menu hasn't let me down yet. 4.) "Daiquiris 2 Geaux" - I think this one at least warrants a "'nuff said" 5.) Multiple Locations - Although the location on Montrose is typically my go-to, you can find BB's over in Upper Kirby and in The Heights as well, the latter of which throws a killer Fat Tuesday celebration. If you're in-the-loop and get that Cajun-craving, chances are, there's a BB's close by. read more

This was my first time trying Boudin Balls and they were amazing!!! The grillades and grits were also really good. The waiter recommended the Mac and cheese, so I got a small portion of the Mac n cheese and a small portion of the grillades. I used to frequent this establishment when it first opened. This visit was not as good as my previous experiences. Don't get me wrong here, the food was tasty and well presented but not of the cajun creole fare I grew to appreciate here. The sandwich I ordered was tastily prepared and served well. BB's never disappoints, no matter which location I patronize. The food is delicious and the service is always on point. This is one of the smaller locations, so parking can be a challenge. This location also has very limited "green" items. They only serve salad or fried pickles, no green beans, asparagus, cabbage or the like. That's the only drawback for me. So I really wanted to like this place. The food was tasty but the service was below par. We found a hair in our crawfish boil and when we let the manager know they offered to remove the potato we found it lying on..... It's not that we wanted the check paid for, but it was patronizing for the manager to pretend as if only the potato was contaminated when it was part of the entire dish. We didn't argue because we didn't want to make a scene but honestly, it was disgusting. The way the situation was handled is really disappointing , since it seemed so promising. I enjoyed the simple Cajun taste of the crawfish and the add ins like button mushrooms and pineapple sausage. The crawfish was fresh, live, and good sized. There's a lot you could add to the pot and I love that there's a lot of options, like boudin, Brussels sprouts, etc. This is what makes the place stand out compared to other places. The Morning Glory breakfast sandwich is the best breakfast sandwich in the history of ever! If you like breakfast sandwiches, this one is an absolute must try. It has ruined breakfast for me because I want nothing else other than this sandwich. Whatever sauce/cheese that is, it's stupid good. I want to bathe in it and then snort it. The only downside is that they don't open until 11 am and it is only served at this location, both of which are criminal in my mind. More people need to know about this sandwich. read more

We live in the heights so usually the BBs there is our go to but I was really craving crawfish and the wait was ridiculous so we headed over to this location. There were 4 of us so it took about 15-20 minutes to get a table because the restaurant is very small. We went on a Sunday night so street parking wasn't bad. I would never attempt to park in their actual lot. Too small and shared with two other businesses. Just a cluster. I will start with the good, our food was great. I thought the crawfish were seasoned perfectly, nice and spicy, and everyone else loved their poboys. We all agreed that the food itself was worth the extra hassle we went through to actually get here and get a table. Now for the bad. Our waitress was definitely not the best. When she asked us if we wanted drinks I literally named 3 beers that they were out of before I finally found one she had. Then my mom and Dad each named 2 beers and struck out. I understand that sometimes restaurants run low of supplies but this was ridiculous. They basically had bud light or michelob ultra. I'm not sure why she just didn't tell us that in the beginning instead of letting us sit there and name beer after beer. After that she brought us our drinks and my husband asked for a straw for his tea, which he never got. Nor did he ever get a refill for the tea. We then placed our order and it didn't take too long for the poboys to come out (brought by a different waitress that was very nice) I ordered 2 pounds of crawfish with mushrooms and potatoes. Mine never came out. Eventually our waitress came back and asked if we needed anything else. I said I was still waiting for my crawfish. She said oh yeah and went to the back. It was still another 10-15 minutes before it came out. I even had to check on it again because she gave me no indication of when it would be out. I suspect she may have forgotten to put in the order because everyone else got their crawfish very quickly. If that was the case I would be a lot less annoyed about it if she had just apologized but she really didn't seem to care. After my crawfish came out she didn't come to the table again to check on us until she cleared our plates. The servers at BBs in the Heights are wonderful, all of them are happy and very friendly and great at their jobs. I just didn't find that at this place. Our waitress seemed to have an attitude the whole time and that ruined the dining experience. The food is delicious and other staff that we interacted with were polite so that earns 2 stars but the poor service we received from our waitress is the reason we will not be returning to this location in the future. I will gladly deal with the wait time at the other location. At least I know that I will be getting quality in both food and service there. read more

This is a good unique late night option since it opens until 3am on the weekend. They make excellent chicken gumbo which I always get when I come here. Food can be hit or miss especially later at night. I've had their jalapeno mac&cheese which was only okay because there wasn't much taste to the glop besides the mild spiciness of the jalapenos. The catfish poboys are large but the bread brings things down as it is not crisp like Calliope's to the point where you question whether it's stale. read more

Plusses - remodeled; outdoor patio; ample parking behind; good selection of draft beers; and good service. Not the best - food. Boudin balls were so-so - dry to say the least. And their much touted (by Houston Press?) Midnight Masterpiece Po-Boy was fair at best. It is supposed to replicate New Orleans' Mother's Restaurant roast beef poor boy. The latter is made from the trimmings ("debris") and the gravy (completely sopping the bun). The bb version was hunks of not-the-best beef with no gravy. Bun was excellent and "dressing" was good. It's a small cozy little cafe & It's main customer base is probably people coming in with a hangover . The Food was ok , it looked amazing but just fell short . I came here because I purchased a groupon. We ordered the gumbos and both had amazing flavor. The only thing I would change was the saltiness. It was EXTREMELY salty to the point where I had to stop eating the soup base. I definitely tasted the cajun, but it was just way too salty for me. We also ordered a dozen oysters that were decently sized! The only complaint here was that they should've shucked the oysters off the actual shell so that we can just slurp it off and not have it still hanging off the oyster. The Texas virgin fries were amazing. I love the stringy thin fries and the brisket meat on it was to die for. Definitely recommend this place if you can't make the drive to NOLA!
