Upon entering BB's, I didn't expect great things. The cafe has old, rusted furniture and the floor is cement that used to be painted red but has now faded, and old boxes were stacked in a corner. Shortly after seating ourselves a server came by and brought menus and took drink orders (we just got water). We also ordered our food - I got a half and half shrimp po' boy and chicken gumbo, my friend got a full shrimp po' boy, and my other friend got the half and half but with a roast beef po' boy. The shrimp po' boy was flavorful and not dry. The shrimp were small but numerous and crispy on the outside with a Cajun seasoning. It was served with mayo, lettuce, tomato, and pickles - "fully dressed." The gumbo was spicy and delicious, but the chicken was cut misshapenly which was somewhat offputting. It was served with packaged saltines. Overall, I recommend this restaurant if you are looking for some classic Cajun/Louisianan food. My friend from Louisiana really enjoyed it! read more

A proper update was due and owing for this beloved neighborhood spot, seeing as my review has from 2012 has become wildly outdated. The downtown location of BB was boss and one of the best things ever to grace downtown with a presence - however they did not survive long in that space, sadly. My sandwich eating habits did not keep them afloat. However the olde timey original is still alive and kicking within spitting distance of "the bars" which are the last vestige of the shockingly (and shockingly-quickly) gentrified Montrose. When I first moved to Montrose it was still interesting with open air drug use, sales, and prostitution I could see from my living room window. Apartments were also affordable for a middle class single individual. Then The Man came and ruined the neighborhood, installing the upper class in million dollar townhouses with a baby stroller where only a few short years ago in crumbling shanties confused 17 and 18 year old boys from the suburbs (the prototypical Justin Taylor) came to lose their innocence with your average Brian Kinney. I don't like when things change - but BB's is still around to offer you a hearty sandwich. Whether it's to dilute the belly of alcohol you have in you after a night out at "the bars" or the more recent bar-bars like Hay Merchant, or you just want a big delicious sandwich for lunch, BB's has got it all. It's a legitimate taste of New Orleans without having to cross the state line to do it. And best of all, their cooking attention to detail means they are still offering original items years later that the corporate copycats have not found a way to offer a blander, more expensive nouveau riche option of the same foods. What in particular do I speak of? The Bullet for the King, my personal fave of the entire menu. Did I briefly consider getting the po boy of the month instead? No. No I did not. It was all about the Bullet for the King to bring it, and bring it big. Oh and they brought it. They are still open 24 hours. But their parking sitch is still not ideal if there are three or more people here before you. I have only one time ever gotten a space out front in the tiny lot. After Pepperoni's opened next door it is even more impossible to find space since the spots in front of BB are now allowable for Pepperoni's customers - I forgot what used to be next door, an "adult" toy shop I think, but whatever it was it was never as high-traffic as Pepperoni's has been. Pepperoni's is so high traffic it led Ray Salti to be okay with shutting down Sorrel, which is a huge disappointment to me personally because I loved Sorrel, but I look forward to what Ziggy is bringing to the space within the next few months. The cleanliness game was stepped up from my last visit, not a single dirty table in sight. Considering it is a bit New Orleans-y it is really not that big of a deal since the more authentic places in the Bywater and Marigny have likely had someone shoot up heroin in the spot within the past hour - but it's nice to know you could bring genteel company here if the opportunity ever arose. And you wouldn't even need to wipe it down, like you do back east. For a $13 sandwich a brother is going to expect a lot out of that thing. If it doesn't French kiss or call me "Your Majesty" like Siri on my iPad then it is going to need to really knock the socks off of the taste buds to consider this a wise investment of $13. $13 could buy you a lot of things on the dollar menu at the fast food drive-thru. However for $13 you get a huge heaping of chicken, bacon, and fresh bread. The menu bills this as "chicken stuffed with cream cheese and jalapeño, wrapped in bacon and topped with bacon ranch sauce and fresh tomatoes." My one complaint is that the jalapeño is barely noticeable, they do not really bring the heat and pile it on there thick even when you ask for it. I see the counterpoint, let the chicken/bacon/cream cheese speak for itself. But the hot heat makes everything better. If there was only one thing (and there is only one thing) to fix about the experience at BB's, they should make it rain with jalapeños. Additionally, my least favorite thing about visiting this spot (but not that I am going to ding BB's any stars for this) is getting harassed by beggars going into and coming out of the small restaurant. Always some sob story about needing money for a bus ticket or to keep their kids out of jail or something else. I got problems too, honey. But I don't annoy people getting into their car thinking it will result in them throwing two bits at me, especially if they have a warm, toasty po-boy in tow that they want to take back down the street and start eating in front of the netflix box. There is no reason to go to the Subway over yonder when you get a world class Cajun-ish sandwich here. BB's has my vote in the upcoming Franchise Wars, prophesied by the film Demolition Man in 1993. read more

My fellow redhead in food crime - looked hard at our catfish dish. her - " I just want to know..." me - "know what?" her: "How they make it taste so good." We didn't know exactly what was in that mystery catfish dish. We just knew that it got better with each big bite. BB's is seriously what's up. They're open late and the service is beyond friendly. The secret to enjoying BB's to the max - is to come with a big group of friends and go for half portions of everything - so you can sample away. We ordered the fried shrimp po-boy, a rice andouille sausage and bean cup, and catfish covered with goodness. OMG. I could elaborate further on the lightly battered shrimp. On the slightly spicy bean dish. And on each one of those catfish bites. But OMG suffices for now. If I hadn't scarfed down two Sprinkles cupcake halves earlier - I definitely would have done BB's Cafe right - and gone for what I'm sure would have been award winning bread-pudding. But too full to even consider dessert - we paid our extremely reasonable bill - and made our way over to CVS (I am CVS Jess after all). Late night cajun food!!! What else do you need to know? They are short staffed at night but they work their hardest to bring you quick service. The food is a little overpriced but well worth it. Where else can you get pappadeaux quality food late at night? NO WHERE ELSE!!! They do not have a lot of tables so rush here as soon as the clubs close. First off, I've been to the location on White Oak, and Richmond but my favorite is and has always been the original location on Montrose.. Sure it's next to a Vallero, the parking lot is smallish, but the food and people always make it worth while. The Tex Mex Cajun virgin is a crazy/amazing creation, shoe string cut french fries, topped with cajun roast beef, gravy, and queso. Yes queso, forget that you're eating a week's worth of calories and dive into the giant dome of cheesy goodness. It doesn't translate so well when you get it to go, so dine in and have an abita. The gumbo is also spot on, very close to what you'd get across the border in Louisiana, it's well seasoned but not muddy tasting, the seafood is great and cooked perfectly -- no tire rubber chewy seafood here. Now my area of expertise; poboys.. I've ordered everyone they have on the menu except the vegetarian one and they're all amazing.. My personal favorites are the pearly whites (oysters), the shrimp is amazing, and the surf and turf (roast beef and friend shrimp). Bread is toasty and fresh, produce (lettuce and tomato) are of good quality, the seafood is cooked to order, and the roast beef is absolutely stellar. I love this place and hope that it sticks around, though not many businesses have been successful there. The food is really great, and the hours are awesome. Hooray for a new late night place! When I entered and inquired about the above said chx for Holiday take away, I was pointed to the Holiday Menu, which noted that it was for a minimum of 12 chickens!?!!? (this was obviously a catering menu). With my obvious disappointment written all over my face, the waiter informs me that this is a Tuesday special as well, and that I could come in on a Tues. and get it :-( I tell him that "Well, that BLOWS" as I don't work anywhere near here, and YES I will be working on Tuesday!! So he said, "Well, if there are some leftover, you might be able to get one early on Wed", to which I replied "GREAT!! Go and tell the Chef to make me one extra on Tues, and I will come in on Wed and buy!!!" Waiter tells me not to get too excited, because he doubts that I can have one now, but that he will ask said Chef. To my surprise (and his) the Chef agreed to make me a fresh Pecan Crusted Chx Breast RIGHT THEN :-D Now, all of that said, I don't really like chicken. I almost NEVER order it out, as I am always disappointed with it's dryness and lack of flavor. This was some of the best chicken that I have had in a LONG time--the chicken AND the Cajun Pepper Cream Sauce were EXCELLENT!!! BB's is everything I want in a breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night meal spot. In most cases I am there after a night out on the town. I have been going to the Montrose location for a few years now. It is smaller but the service and the turn around on tables is pretty fast. Service? mostly college students that go to UH. they aren't the best but not the the worst either and the place is so small that in most cases is fast anyways. This may be a bold statement but I have not had a bad meal there. For breakfast the Morning Glory Po' Boy (Scrambled eggs, queso, country sausage and BB's sauce). If i remember correctly the breakfast catering menu has assorted breakfast tacos! Lunch I get the "Kathie B's Campechana" (gulf shrimp, crab, avocado slices). It is served with chips but most of the time I just grab a fork and go to town. Although, the only thing that can be worked on is they could go a little easy on the lime juice. Shrimp Devils! basically a shrimp brochette. Though I gotta say the jalapenos give the shrimp a heck of a bite. Dinner? Any of the poboys will surely hit the spot. BB's has clever names for their items. I have had the Rock Out Then Knock Out (fried catfish), Bedtime in the Bayou (fried shrimp), and Bullet for the King (jalapeno stuffed chicken wrapped in bacon). Those are my more favorite items. When they mean overstuffed they aren't kidding. In many cases the half order is more than enough for any meal. The items are also a la carte so ordering fries and stuff is extra. For the amount of food you get the price is good. They recently opened a downtown location off Louisiana and Texas. It is a much larger restaurant compared to their first one. Best Po-boys in Houston easily. I got the Midnight Masterpiece (roast beef po-boy) and soup combo. It was fantastic. The po-boy was fully dressed and the bread was perfect. There was plenty of gravy on the roast beef. It was a very good po-boy. My friends got the Bedtime in the Bayou po-boy and enjoyed it. There was plenty of shrimp on the po-boy and it was also fully dressed. The shrimp had great flavor and were well cooked. The chicken gumbo was nice and thick and had a deep flavor, but there was too much rice. Overall a great gumbo in Houston though. My biggest complaints about this place are the limited parking and the limited seating. The waitstaff are all very nice and it doesn't take long to get your food. Let me just say, I'm writing this review as I'm eating my delicious left overs (texcajun fries)...so I might be biased. Honestly, they have the best burger I have ever had in a VERY long time. I tried the wake & bake burger and it might be one of, if not, the best burger I've had. The bacon was super thick and it came with two types of cheeses, a special sauce plus the egg. I think what did it in was the breading...it's on some type of seeded sweet bun, absolutely delicious. My friend had the half & half po boy and it was enough for two. The texcajun fries taste great as well! I will say, I've probably had better loaded fries before, but the sauces are what makes this different than the usual. The serving is definitely enough for two, but that won't stop me. In terms of service, there were more workers then people dining and it took awhile for someone to notice our group despite this location being extremely small. We went to try this joint because we just got back from New Orleans for a friend's birthday road trip and I was craving for some po'boys, especially with the Gulf shrimps. First of all, be careful about the parking. Do not park at the gas station side as there's already a line drawn to divide who's parking spot does it belong to. The restaurant itself is small and it matches up to the size of its own private parking lot. If you come at night, the lighting in the restaurant will be pretty much lit up by the neon signs and the glow from the TV. Once you walk in, you could just sit yourself anywhere you would like because there's probably will be one waiter (that's how small the restaurant is). I ordered Royal St. (Street) Secret, but for some reason I told the waiter Royal "Saint" Secret. Of course, he didn't make any smart comment or smirks but answer back "Royal Street Secret, got it." My girlfriend ordered Bedtime in the Bayou. We also ordered 1 basket of the shoestring fries. We admired the nifty New Orleans jazzy decors with the posters and neon signs reminding us of those "margaritas to go cup" that you could buy along the I-10 highway. I could also see what kind of beers (Abita no less) they have but I don't see they have the Abita strawberry one (yes, I am a giant baby). Our po'boys came out fairly quickly, and it was very good. First of all, the bread has a crunchy outside but soft on the inside. The bread wasn't also too hot to the point that the steam would burn your mouth. The shrimp was really, really good. The sauce was really good as it gives the New Orleans style taste to the po'boy. I took a bite of the Bedtime in the Bayou and the shrimp was just awesome. The shrimps are butterfly cut and battered and fried where it has the crunchy texture but the shrimpy taste is still there, in a good way. The shoestring fries was also pretty good, and it's a good thing that we only ordered 1 order of the fries to share. I thought the full po'boy was going to be just the right amount of food for me, but it was actually quite filling. They also have your usual condiments for the New Orleans spicy taste with all the hot sauce right there for you to use. Great little place for a cajun meal. Po-boys are always on point and you really can't go wrong with the classics listed on the menu. Grillades and grits, red beans and rice and other staples have all been very good. Beyond the food, they offer some of the harder to find beers I always miss when thinking of NOLA, such as Abita Amber, Anidigator and so forth. Interior is very small and they can get swamped at times with limited service for the random waves of diners. If you're patient and friendly, some good food should find your table soon enough. This location is very small with a few tables but it is perfect for pickup. We ordered a bunch of separate orders for pick up and I was very impressed that every order was perfect and they threw in enough sauces for us! Staff here is very customer focused and accommodating. I was really impressed! I'm not a Houston native so I am not really caught up in the Cajun craze but the food here is great! The shrimp platter is HUGE!!! I shared it with my guy friend and we were both full. It comes with big, juicy shrimp, French fries and garlic bread ( diet killer). Someone ordered bread pudding. I have to start of quickly as I want to get to the point. This place is horrible. There, now let me get to the points. I was craving crawfish and decided to come here as they are open till 3am. Bad decision. We walk in and sat ourselves at the bar, waited a few minutes for a drink order only for it to take even more time to come to us. Once she arrives, she takes our order (4 LBs crawfish, 2 potato order , 2 sausage order and butter). We wait longer than I have at similar places ; rajin cajun and the BB's on ella come to mind. Once the food finally comes the butter is missing, look I like butter and need it anytime I eat crawfish. Cool, I let the waitress know and she leaves, unbeknownst to me, to return way too late. Not only did she get to us once we had a LB left, she asked "what did y'all want again, I forgot" I told her Nevermind and she turns around and walks away. Here's the worst part, Not was the butter missing, but my order is lukewarm. If the crawfish doesn't burn my hands then it's not fresh, point blank period. To add insult to injury, I don't think they check the crawfish- tons dead and one even looked decomposed prior to cooking. Once we are done I had to ask the bartender for my ticket because she was taking forever, she came after the bartender told us she can get our waitress. This location is the worst of the 3 I've visited, management could tell we were irate and looking around for our waitress and if they couldn't tell, then they should look a little harder , it's not hard to see when someone is a fair bit annoyed. After helping a fellow Yelper with some moving duties, we decided to grab a bite to eat. Not being from this part of town, we left the choice up to him and we ended up at BB's Cafe. Food... 5 stars. Service... 3 stars. Overall review... right in the middle at 4. I had the gator tacos with red beans and rice on the side, my girl had a surf and turf po boy with fries with roast beef drippings and queso on them, and we loved everything on our plates. The gator tacos came with a corn salsa and cabbage slaw that was reminiscient of the best fish tacos I've ever had but with alligator instead. The gator was much more tender than what I've had in the past and every bite was awesome. The red beans and rice were thick and flavorful. The fries and po boy (I volunteered to try each... for the sake of a thorough review, no, really...) were both extremely good as well. So, now I pretty much need a BB's to open up on the NW side. Are you listening BB's owners... Spring/Woodlands area, let's make it happen! The only downside was the service. The guy wouldn't even look at us as he stared off in the distance as he took our order. I can tell they serve drunk kids because tons of cheese and grease is exactly what you want after a night of drinking so if you can't find a food truck but you're near this joint, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. However, if you haven't been binge drinking, the quesadilla is just really really heavy and there's not much taste to it (just a lot of cheese and grease). They do give you some dipping sauces. The green one was spicy and pretty good. This place isn't the best I've been to so if you're not nearby, it's not worth a trek. I've been here a few times throughout the years. When they first opened there was a meal that consisted of 3 chicken strips and 3 beignets with dipping sauces for each. I thought I had died and gone to heaven, as that constituted the perfect meal in my book. A few visits later I went back and it was no longer on the menu, so I stopped going to BB's for a while. I've also had the po-boy and thought it was excellent. It was authentic and the bread was fresh and crumbly, not the "make the roof of your mouth raw" variety that some places serve. Last weekend my friends and I went on a Westheimer pub crawl and BB's was our 8th and final spot for some late night bites after an evening of alcohol induced debauchery. After eating here last weekend, BB's has totally redeemed itself!! My girlfriend and I shared 2 entrees of mac and cheese with brisket and also brisket and grits. It was so amazing. The mac and cheese was super ooey gooey and to die for. The brisket was so unbelievably tender. I know, I know, we had been drinking for a while. I first tried BB's for an early bday lunch and was hooked. It was crawfish season and I had heard they have the best in town. The mudbugs tasted out of this world! It was 7.99/lb with a grilled spicy corn on the cob, as I recall. Although Im not into spicy food, but that meal was one of the best Ive had. The second time I got the Midnight Masterpiece Sandwich and was equally satisfied. I have to say, though, I dont like the fries. They look and taste like the frozen stuff. I'm a fan of chunky rather than shoe string fries. Delicious Gumbo too! Service was great, as always. BB's is no doubt one of my fav spots in Montrose and in Htown. I love that theyre open so late. Wasn't a fan of this location. Waited over an hour to get my food & I placed the order there to go. The fries were hard & cold, everything was cold. I had the shrimp platter, fish platter, boudin balls & red beans and rice. They never told me my order was ready. Just left it in the back I went to check & was told they were just working on my platters and would bring me my order when it's ready.... MI had to go up a second time & after about 15 more minutes my food came out all to be served cold. I hate being the one to return things and choose to handle things in a different manner.
