Came here for lunch expecting so much more. Waited for 25 min when several tables were open and available. Finally got seated and greeted by our server who filled our water glasses, except he ran out of water for mine and poured the last remaining bit into my glass and said he'd return. He never came back to offer more water. Never asked us if we wanted anything else besides water to drink. He messed up everyone's order and brought the wrong meal. Never apologized or came back after to see how it was or if we needed anything else. We had to flag him down to get a beverage. When it was time to pay he brought us another tables bill and argued with us that it was correct until we shoved it in his face showing him items none of us ordered. Went for restaurant week, and while charmed by the general ambiance and the character of Charles st, the meal left for wanting. Between my wife and I, we sampled the tuna and duck confit apps, the pork tenderloin and risotto entrees, and brownie and peach cobbler desserts. The highs: The duck confit was the best thing we had. Crispy skin, tender meat and a bone you pull out clean. A+. The risotto was a creamy summer corn dish that we could have eaten all night. A perfect light summer meal. The lows: The pork tenderloin could be described as polite. No bold or boastful flavors. Alone, the pork seemed under seasoned, and wish the carrot and orange purée, it had some flavor added, but not enough to leave me wanting more of the dish. We came to Beacon Hill Bistro for Saturday brunch, and sat in the bar area. The service was fast and the food was so fresh! My friend ordered the open face ham sandwich, and I had the egg white frittata (asparagus, parmesan, tomato) topped with a simple salad. We enjoyed our meals and the ambiance was so cozy and not too loud/crowded. Perfect for a relaxed Saturday brunch. Location is great. Very nice bar as you enter, with great drinks, worth a stop before you sit down for dinner. The dining room could use some work, as there is a little bit of a hotel feel, not exactly what comes to mind when I think of a quaint French/American Bistro. It is more modern, and a little serious, but at the same time not uptight. If you are looking for a super romantic night out with a significant other it might be disappointing, but other than that ok. 3.5 stars. Service: Quality of service was very good. 4 stars. Our waitress was familiar with all the items on the menu that we had questions on and provided exceptional advice on ordering dishing that fit what we were looking for. Additionally, and something I appreciated, she knew when to come to the table to take our order or ask if we needed anything. Wasn't overbearing, and made us feel right at home. The only thing she lacked was knowledge on the wines. For this type/style of restaurant I would expect nothing more of the service, nearly 5 stars. Food: 5 stars. Now this could have been just what we ordered, but two spectacular apps and two perfect entrees. We started with the seared foie gras and the a special on the menu, which was an assortment of rare field mushrooms, goat cheese, pomergranate seeds, and shaved black truffles on top (my favorite part!). Both were fantastic and had simple flavors that were very focused, you could definitely tell the chef knew how to really bring everything together just perfectly rather than trying just to do something exotic for nothing more than the sake of doing something exotic. The entrees were fabulous. We had the Rabbit and the Venison. Again, the chef focused on the heart of the dish and making sure to use ingredients and accents that enhance the meats rather trying to stack stuff to the moon or make some unique presentation with various rarities on the plate just to impress. We followed with a great cheese tray that was very reasonable at just $7, and a phenomenal molten chocolate cake. The cake was done to perfection, with both the outside and the inside done to text book form. Wine: This category is what kept me from going to 4.5 stars. I give the wine list an unimpressive 2.5 stars, sorry. It could really use some work. There was no focus on the list, I felt like it was a mish-mash of wines. Prices were fair not great. The thing that drove me nuts, was they had nothing that was very good or great. Yes they did have some nice bordeaux, but they were from very off years, and about 4 X what I think you could buy them for, taking advantage of labels. We ended up going with a Chateaneuf du Pape, that was decent not great. I think they could really improve here, without at all changing the price deck. Overall Takeaway: If you live in Boston or Cambridge, I think this restaurant is a must at some point. If you are visiting, and want a really solid dinner in a good location I think you would be very happy. I love small neighborhood places especially for lazy Sunday morning brunch and Beacon Hill Bistro does not disappoint! It's usually less crowded than the neigbohood spot Paramount across the street. The food was good - we shared an omeltte with the potatoes baked inside and a delicious sweet french toast - I'm a big fan of the savory & sweet brunch share and Beacon Hill Bistro is a good option for that combination. Coffee was good and service was very friendly. I would definitely come here again and would reccommend it if you're in the Beacon Hill area. read more

Right by the Boston commons, this is a perfect place for a weekend brunch. It has great ambience, quick and efficient service, and delicious non-greasy food. My personal favorites are the Eggs Benedict, the French toast with caramel apples, and the breakfast cocktails. However, every dish on their menu is delicious and you won't be disappointed. boston globe's resident food critic devra first waxed raphsodic about meals here. so despite yelpers wildly mixed reviews of 1 to 5 stars, i decided to taste for myself. how ms. first could possibly liken chef bond's cooking to paul bocuse astounds me. has she ever tasted monsieur bocuse or his prodigy's cooking? having lived in france i have and must say there isn't much to justify any comparison. last nights paté de chef, which i hear BHB is particuarly proud of, was mortadella of pork & venison . it was dull and tasteless, saved only by the fig, sweet mustard & crusty bread it was plated with. i had to ask the waiter again what the paté was as he repeated the kitchen's spiel. mr. bond, i know good mortadella and this AIN'T good mortadella. the much heralded frites WITH the steak, on a bright note, was mcdonald-ish and a winner. the steak, however, sub-par. the braised pork shoulder, while not a standout, was good, paired nicely with carrots & navet. BHB certainly deserves a star for the wine selection, service and ambience. but the dinner had no "mmmmm" moments. and for the prices, there should be. as for food critics, well, lessons learned. again. read more

Places like Beacon Hill Bistro exist because Bostonians are willing to settle for mediocrity on a night out. The only reason I have awarded this place two stars is because it is clean and the decor is well maintained. The wait staff have been very attentive although I would not say the same for the maitre' d. I have been there three times, once for brunch, once for the steak frites, and once for a salmon dish. I am a lousy cook, yet if I had attempted these things at home they would have tasted no different from BHB. The prices are not outrageous for a decent meal but laughable when placed on the bland, diminutive portions BHB will serve you. Beacon Hill Bistro February 20th, 2014 by Richard Chudy 075 It'd probably be simpler if we could ignore price and just focus on the quality of the burger in hand. In some ways, price is just one factor of many, but it's always something to think about, especially when that price tag slowly creeps higher and higher. But the flavor of the beef can often trump the price tag, within reason of course, and that beef better be damn great to be worthy of semi-frequent visits. The Beacon Hill Bistro burger launches off at $16, which comes with a side of fries and a red eye aioli (more on that later), and nothing else. Upgrading with cheese (cheddar or blue) will set you back $2, as will the bacon of the day. Of course I went with both, and for all you math majors out there, that comes to a grand total of $20. But how was it? Nestled into a soft English Muffin, which appeared to have a small bite removed from the front, the burger is loosely packed, grilled and definitely on the thicker side of things. I'm not sure the English Muffin is the proper choice here, as the patty is simply too tall and hefty, causing the English Muffin to kind of crumble at times, but that's mostly due to one hell of a juicy burger. The beef, I must say, is one of the top three beefy burger experiences I've had to date. Seasoned flawlessly, cooked even better (a perfect medium-rare across the board) this burger is crazy juicy from start to finish and wouldn't give up. The taste of the grill is there, not in an overly charred way, just balanced, smoky and delightful. Ground daily from sirloin and copious amounts of beef fat (sometimes with the additions of brisket and/or short rib), it's an 8oz. burger done right in every which way. A side of piping hot fries are dusted with herbs; they arrive nice and salty and are crispy and ever so fluffy. The bacon of the day on this day was a Mangalitsa guanciale, a salt, pepper and herb cured piece of jowl that is dried then sliced raw. It's like eating the straight-up fat on a strip of bacon, cut just too thick for my liking, and not fully melting on top like was intended, similar to a piece of lardo. Still, I applaud the effort in doing something different with the bacon family, and creativity gets points even if the execution didn't fully do it for me. Cheddar cheese is slightly detectable but if I had to do it again, I'd probably omit, wishing it was included in the regular $16 price tag. It was the rare time where cheese didn't necessarily add anything to the burger. Red Eye Aioli was just fine, a little light on both on the espresso and the chili oil front flavor-wise, but much like the bacon, the effort of doing something outside the box will always yield an appreciation. If you did strip down this burger for the basic package of $16 with a side of fries, you'd be in burger purist heaven. Cheese and bacon are generally automatics, but in this case, they almost get in the way of the beefy endeavor that awaits. Right up there with the beef from all the other greats like Craigie on Main and Back Bay Social Club, Beacon Hill Bistro makes a hell of a beefy burger. Is it worth $20? I'm not sure any burger truly is, but this one is easily deserving of hanging with the top notch fancy burgers in town. read more

We might have gone overboard, but this was a brunch for the ages. My brother goes to Emerson so we did a quick walk around town to find a good brunch spot. I wanted to treat him to something nice since he's accustomed to dining hall food. Upon walking in to BHHB, there was no wait, but the place was packed. Good timing to say the least. We went all out ordered coffees, mimosas, bloody marys and OJ to wet our whistles. Then came the actual meals. Quite perfect I must say. We each ordered a dish, but shared several bites among the three of us and may have indulged and ordered some extras - Eggs Benedict, the Country Frittata, the Mushroom & Swiss Omelet and the special Apple Crisp French Toast. All delectable - it was actually a little embarrassing getting a glimpse at our table as we devoured more food than we needed, but I was on vacation so I threw my inhibitions out the door. Totally worth it. I was full until dinner, even after walking through the whole city. This meal was pure energy. My main dish was the eggs benedict (I believe it was a special?) and boy, was it tasty. The meat was crispy, but a nice thick cut. The homefries were fried, like cubed french fries. Sold right there. The coffee was strong and the bloody mary packed some kick to it. Also, the toast is not your run of the mill loaf of bread... rather homemade thick sliced, crusty french bread. Both the frittata and the omelet were great egg breakfast dishes. I only had a couple bites to taste, but my brother conquered his frittata and my boyfriend ate until he couldn't anymore, even though he wanted so badly to finish the rich french toast they so desperately needed to order. Although a bit pricier than most brunch spots, it was a welcome change from the norm. Beacon Hill Bistro takes a somewhat different tact with its Restaurant Week menu compared to many other restaurants. For one, it's pretty limited -- three app, three entree and only one dessert option. (It's not really an option then, right?). For another, it's quite shi shi. My meal consisted of rare delicacies, including steak tartare and duck. No green salads or baked chickens on this menu. My order was a bit daring for me, but I loved it. A friend who joined me wasn't quite as thrilled with her mildly cooked duck. She turned it back without any problem. The manager was nice enough to bring her a tomato salad while she waited. Great experience overall. I just would have liked a couple of more menu options, especially for dessert. read more

We came here on a Friday night around 7:30 and had no wait. Gotta love Open Table! The food was excellent and service was attentive and informative. We had the oysters, gravlox, andouille sausage, and white fish cake for small plate appetizers. For the main dish, I was deciding between the gnocchi and the duck. The server recommended the duck because the restaurant is known for their steak and duck dishes. I was so falls we picked that. Everything was great -- especially the duck. For dessert, we tried the Creme brûlée and chocolate layered cake. My friend loved the Creme brûlée, and he's a huge Creme brûlée fan. I loved the chocolate cake. It was as good as they get. Still shocked. My husband and I came in for lunch with my husbands support dog. We were told that the support dog would need to be tied up outside of the restaurant on the street. This is a toy poodle trained to detect glucose levels. I don't usually write bad reviews because I really haven't had a bad restaurant experience in a while. I guess all good things have to come to an end. This place was recommended to me by a Beacon Hill resident, so I was looking forward to a great experience and a great Sunday Brunch. It was a train wreck from start to finish. The coffee had less flavor than my dad's Maxwell House, the fresh fruit looked like it had been in the fridge for days and tasted sour, and the dishes were dirty and spotty. Now the food...the worst part! My boyfriend ordered the roasted red pepper frittata. The frittata had very few red peppers (which were diced, not roasted) and was filled with the house potatoes that I think were supposed to be a side dish. He had to slather it with ketchup to give it any flavor. I ordered the vanilla pancakes with caramelized bananas. The fluffy pancakes were the bright point of the meal, but unfortunately, were weighed down with a cold banana mush that was far from what I would consider caramelized bananas. Maybe I came here on an "off" morning, because I have no idea why anyone would recommend this restaurant. I would rather wait 1 hour in the freezing cold line across the street at Paramount than eat here again. read more

I went there this past Saturday with four friends for dinner. We had reservations at 8:15 and weren't seated until 30 min later. The waiter who never introduced himself was rude and seemed like he hated his job. He came by our table only twice ...once to deliver the food and second to drop off the bill. The food was not good at all. I ordered the bibb lettuce salad -- the most bland dressing and unimpressive goat cheese. The charcuterie was just a slab of fatty meat with no flavor. My duck which I ordered medium came out rare and chewy. My other four friends were not impressed at all either. It was my first time there and my last time. I would like to respond to the review sent in by AR. My family and I were sitting at the table next to them, trying to enjoy the end to a wonderful Christmas dinner. They had been sitting for less than 3 minutes before they rudely summoned a waiter over to complain they had not been given any water. The waiter promptly returned and again, the two men complained they had been waiting for a long time with no service. When their actual waiter arrived (less than 2 minutes later) and apologized for the delay, the conversation escalated rather quickly, as one of the men said "we had a reservation, you knew we were coming, I have no sympathy for you." After which they proceeded with the charade of "should we leave? I think we should just leave." My table and the family on the other side of two men were happy to see them go because their rude behavior made everyone feel very uncomfortable. My family and I have been going to this restaurant for over ten years for Christmas dinner. We have always found the service to be efficient and accommodating, and their food to be absolutely delicious! However, this year the desserts were not quite up to the standards of the dinner as they had reverted to Thanksgiving-style pies. We were here on july 29 at the same time as Ellen k. It was 10:30 pm when we arrived due to a late flight. As the kitchen was closing soon we were seated quickly and our waitress Mackenzie was attentive and kind even though we just extended her work night. Yes, there was a mouse. But, what Ellen assumed was indifference was the manager hurriedly calling pest control to remediate the situation. He then moved all the remaining guests (keep in mind that it was closing time and virtually empty), expressed his extreme embarrassment, and extended a discount to everyone there. I am assuming that Ellen was at the table that had finished eating and paid just as this was happening. They left quickly and missed the ensuing remorse and discount. Now, on to the food. It was great. I had the duck. It was cooked perfectly, but could have used a stronger fruit flavor. The fruit was overwhelmed by the fennel. My husband had the risotto and loved it. Sweetbreads were great too. We were sent to our room with champagne to celebrate our anniversary on the house. Breakfast all mornings was great. We had the mushroom omelette, French toast, yogurt parfait, waffle during the course of our stay. All delicious. Lunch was yummy too. My husband had the club sandwich and I had the burger. We stayed at the hotel for two nights and our room was perfect. Yes, the rooms are small, the decoration was modern yet cozy. The bathroom was new and the shower great. We enjoyed the upstairs terrace and the comfortable feel of the entire hotel. We were made to feel at home and the location can't be beat. read more

Wow - what happened to this place? The service on my visit this week was horrendous and we will not be back: - Food was served cold. The food was actually prepared well, but served barely lukewarm. - Waitress was confused. Took our drink order (a bottle of pinto gris, nothing complicated) and disappeared for 15 minutes despite the fact that there were hardly any other customers. Then came back with a vague question about our wine. - Complete incompetence for special orders. The menu has a nice message about the restaurant working around food allergies. I have celiac and cannot eat gluten - something most restaurants are up to speed on and work around pretty easily. Not the case here - the waitress and the chef (since waitress had to go back and keep checking) didn't seem clear on what had gluten, arguing with me that potatoes (plain) have gluten. When I asked for easy substitutes - such as veggies instead of bread for a dip - I was told they didn't have that (um, you don't have vegetables?) We left to eat dessert elsewhere. read more

They help each other empty trash bins in the aisle between the tables (super appetizing!), apologize for themselves and each other when they forget--the diet coke, the coffee, the salt and pepper, the mimosa--again. The best brunch I've had so far in Boston. Everything we ordered came out perfect. The french toast and pancakes were delicious and bountiful--no small portions here. The homefries were crispy shelled pillows of potato--like a french fried gnocchi. Sausage was pretty standard, but like everything else was executed perfectly. I'm excited to go back and try more. What keeps me from giving it a higher rating is that the menu was quite small, nothing over the top that really made me want to order it. Also, my coffee was never refilled, nor was I even asked. Went to Beacon Hill Bistro for a date night with my boyfriend. We arrived on time for out reservation at 8 pm but we were not seated until 40 minutes later. The hostess said people have been enjoying their dinners and taking their time. We had a cocktail and glass of wine while we waited. The cocktail wake up and smell rose was excellent. The French Onion soup, Ava's oysters Rockefeller and the bread to start were excellent. My boyfriend ordered the steak frites. He asked for medium well but it came back very well done. I would have sent it back if it was my meal. My meal was a swordfish and risotto special which was very good. I would come back again some day but I wouldn't rush back. read more

This was my second time eating brunch here, though my partner is somewhat of a regular. I can't say whether he'll be back, but I definitely won't. The food was fine - I have no complaints and would give this 3 stars if the review was just about the food. The service, however, was abysmal and, unfortunately, even soliciting the manager's involvement did not improve things. The problem started when we were served coffee but not offerred or automatically given cream. I had to stop the server on her way back by the table to ask for cream. After she brought it, setting it down on the table briskly, I immediately poured it into my coffee... to learn it was milk, not cream. Ok, mistakes happen, but after (a) having to ask for it and (b) now having to ask for a correction AND a new cup of coffee, I was not getting a good feeling about how this meal was going to end up. When I asked for cream, she again set it down in a hurry as if she was used to working in a diner, not a somewhat upscale brunch restaurant. I picked it up to learn the porcelain had a sizable chip near the pour spout. Um, who serves their customers with broken dishes? So! We called her over AGAIN - mind you, this is all just to get a decent cup of coffee! and politely pointed out the chip and requested a new cream pitcher. Her response, no joke, was, "Oh, well... we wouldn't want you to have a BROKEN cup for your cream, would we." Attitude and all. I should have walked out right then. Our meal continued with nearly silent/surly service, rarely getting checked on, always having to stop her to request what we needed. Finally, I'd had it and the manager was informed. He appropriately apologized and offered to bring some complementary drinks to the table - which we accepted. As he was setting down the drinks, we asked him if we could have some more cream for our coffee. He immediately went off to get more cream and came back with... yup, you guessed it... THE BROKEN CREAM PITCHER! The Very Same One! To top it all off - our server continued to have the same surly attitude even after the conversation with the manager. Clearly HE is the problem. I thought I would check this place out for breakfast, and ventured in. There were a few people inside, and many open tables. The host chose to put me at a small table immediately next to a large party, despite open tables all over. I asked him if I could be moved and his answer was no, If I wanted to wait they would give me another table. No thanks. read more
