A group of friends and I visited the Bistro for breakfast one morning in February. We settled on the Bistro becaues the Paramount was likely to be too crazy for our party of 5. This was the same day we were seeing five of the nine Best Picture nominees at the AMC theatre, so we knew we needed a hearty breakfast. Since I'd be living on snacks until dinner, I decided to avoid the pancakes I wanted and go the protein route by getting two eggs with ham (came with potatoes and toast with this delicious jam!!). It was solid. I don't really know how you could screw that up. Everyone else seemed satisfied with their meals as well. I was glad we chose the Bistro. I wasn't up for the circus-like atmosphere of the Paramount (not a ton of breakfast/brunch options in the area at 8:30am on a Saturday!). It was a classy joint. Felt kind of French in design and the staff was great. And of course, the neighborhood is charming. This would be a good place to take an out-of-town visitor. read more

I came here with a group of 12 people for a work function on a Thursday night around 6pm. We had no problems making our reservation and the place wasn't really overly crowded anyways. The restaurant looks big from the outside, but it's not very deep so it's a strange long narrow space with bathrooms tucked down in the basement below the restaurant. I thought the ambiance was fine and the service was adequate, but nothing too wonderful or terrible either way. I was a little disappointed in the menu which was a little more high class than I'm used to - maybe it was the French aspect. In any case it was one of those situations where there are 10 dinner options and nothing jumps off the page and everything seems to have one element that you could totally do without. I settled on the steak frites - the frites were delicious and crispy/salty but the steak had too much butter sauce and not enough steak. It sounded like they had an affordable wine/dinner combo deal for Monday night that might be worth checking out, but other than that I don't think I'd be back unless work was paying again. read more

Generally quite good for brunch. I've been here a few times and have never been let down. I think there's a lot of places I'd rather get brunch on the weekends, places with perhaps a bit more character or variety, but for a safe, airy, modern brunch BHHB is quite dependable. read more

Went to BHB for brunch this past Sunday. We arrived around 11 or 11:30 and there was barely a wait (about 5 minutes) during which we had mimosas from the bar (yum!). The space is very cute - bright, comforting - "it's a bistro", as my friend duly noted. The seating makes the most of the limited space - it's not cramped, but hopefully you're not a crazy loud talker. The wait staff was very pleasant and service was perfectly fine. I got the french toast with cider braised apples and spiced creme fraiche. The french toast itself was excellent - not knock your socks off, but just plain really good. Came with real maple syrup (thank god) and a plethora of apples on top, which were really really good. I was a little disappointed in the minimal amount of creme fraiche cause I love the stuff, but all in all the dish was good and well rounded - an ample portion as well. My friend got the poached eggs (basically eggs benedict) which I tried and were good. He was surprised cutting into them that there was a decent amount of water coming out with the yolk, but he didn't seem particularly put off by it. He also got a side of bacon which was apparently oven cooked (aka not crispy), and delicious. We ordered coffee and my friend ordered a pear bellini - it was yummy but could have been more peary. All in all it was a lovely experience. I'll probably try to make it to more places I've not yet been before I go back, but I wouldn't be averse to heading back that way time and again. read more

Went here for dinner with my parents and my boyfriend for a lovely dinner. For me, the bay scallop appetizer special took the show--tender, little bay scallops dressed with a vinaigrette over lentils I believe, it was great. I had duck (my usual go to) and it was fantastic, crispy and savory. My boyfriend and dad had the pork special which was heavy and decadent--just how french food should be! Service was great, we had a little trouble with the bill....our first copy was 30 something dollars for the 4 of us :) but they fixed it quickly and we were on our way. Came here for Sunday brunch and it wasn't too packed. It's a small place and kind of strange since it's also a hotel? Service was just ok... had to wait for a bit throughout our time there, but hey, at least they were friendly! Their restrooms are located thru a door, down some stairs, into a dark and scary area... I also hate when the faucet water is freezing when I try to wash my hands! I ordered an egg and bacon english muffin sandwich thing. It was really cheesy and pretty good. The potatoes that came with it were nicely fried out the outside without being overcooked - the perfect texture! I really wanted some fresh fruit juice, but they only had OJ... wish they had a larger selection of fresh juices! Went here for RW last week and had a great experience! The food was creative, beautiful and delicious. I had the celeriac and parsnip veloute (soup) with cracked hazelnut. The flavor was creamy, and not too rich. The hazelnuts gave it a nutty and somewhat surprising texture. For the main course I had pappardelle with duck, mushrooms, and kale. Yum! The portions were great too! I would really love to go back there for their Wine Monday (not every Monday, but every two weeks it seems) where you get 4 courses paired with 4 glasses of wine for $55! Have only come here for drinks/bar snacks, not dinner, so keep that filter in mind on this review. Overall I really enjoy this place. The bar area is pretty cozy, bartenders are generally friendly and the crowd is mostly couples enjoying a pre/post dinner drink. The gf and I have come here a few times to grab a drink before dinner and really enjoy the atmosphere and the Beacon Hill people watching. Nice variety of wines and cocktails, though I usually go with one of the beers on tap. Bar food- highly recommend any of the cheeses they have on the menu. We went with a whipped goat cheese variety, and the bread it comes with is also fantastic. From what I can tell, rest of the food looks great as well, but for whatever reason we haven't opted to stay for dinner yet. The temptation of hitting up Figs across the street always seems to win out :-) Definitely a spot worth stopping by, even if just to check out the bar and relax over a good drink. read more

Came here for lunch with a girlfriend. Cute cafe spot. I liked the ambiance of a quaint cafe. Service was alright. Food was a little bland and oily for summertime. My favorite was the chilled zuchini soup appetizer. It was definitely refreshing for a hot humid day. But even the soup was a little oily. My friend had the Lentil and Farro Burger salad....the burger tasted a little fishy and she sent it back in exchange for the beet salad. Light, fresh, but not too spectacular or tasty. I had the Grilled Chicken Pesto sandwhich. The Pesto herb on the bread was good...the chicken itself was a little bland. Went to dinner here with a friend last night for the wine and dine mondays with wine from Puglia. Definitely a fun experience. The dinner started where someone talked about Italy and it's role in the winemaking industry and then talked about each wine that was paired with each course throughout the meal. The wines were delicious and they gave you a pretty nicely poured glass as well. The food was ok- I wasn't blown away by anything but everything was solid. We started with a chickpea polenta cake with clams (not bad), and then had orechiette with crispy pancetta and cauliflower (yum!), mutton with eggplant wrapped around winter greens (mutton was tasty and cooked nicely but the vegetables were WAY too salty), and the last course was water buffalo cheese with pepper jelly and a cookie (also delicious). I would prefer my food a little bit warmer, but that was definitely just a plating issue because of the event. For the price, these dinners are a great deal and I would definitely do another one. read more

Their food is excellent for dinner and brunch. I particularly like going here for brunch, which is quite reasonably priced for the high quality food. I strongly recommend this place for brunch or restaurant week. I must admit it has been a year or so since I last went here (I moved). The one thing that stands out to me is the service wasn't always that good. Although I can't recall a particular story, I do recall there was quite a big service snafu that I witnessed with the table next to ours that made the meal a bit uncomfortable for us, but the details escape me. No one really acknowledged how it disturbed the other customers, that lack of acknowledgement definitely bothered me. read more

Brunch! I have eaten here twice now in the last two weeks, and I have only tried the brunch, so I will fill you in... The atmosphere is very relaxing and very minimalistic. Never too crowded (maybe I shouldn't write such a positive review) and we have been seated promptly, even with a large party. The menu has the usual range of egg dishes, pancakes, french toast, and some lunch items. The vanilla french toast with carmalized bananas, and the french toast with cider braised apples, are both great, as was the frittata and the egg and smoked salmon scramble. I enjoy a fine cup of coffee, and the coffee here has not disappointed as well. We were pleasantly suprised with our experience here. I would probably choose eating brunch here over the Paramount across the street, mainly due to the stress factor of the crowded and hectic Paramount. The food is probably a draw, and the prices are similar. My only gripe about the restaurant is that week to week, the menu hasn't seemed to change. A special or too for some variety might be nice. For that reason I subtract a half of a star. Enjoy! read more

Great little spot. A little cramped on the inside, but I have been in closer quarters. The menu was not that extensive. We were there for brunch, so I am not sure about the other meals served there and what the menu would be like. I got the Eggs Ben, which were really good. My boyfriend had another egg dish, can't remember the name, anyway, they weren't all that keen on the changes he wanted made to the dish but were a little accommodating. Unfortunately neither one of us were in the mood for sweet because I REALLY wanted to try the vanilla pancakes. One thing to mention in particular was the waitress- she was amazing! Really nice, hard worker, was having fun with the patrons but was getting side work DONE. I used to be a waitress and she owned that place- I was impressed. Overall, cute place, decent food, pleasant staff. Will go back to try the vanilla pancakes but I still want to try some other brunch places in the neighborhood. Oh, and fantastic mimosas. Today a friend and I were starving and wanted brunch. Let me tell you, my favorite meal is brunch. I love everything about it! We walked down Charles Street fulling expecting to go to our favorite place...The Paramount. But...per usual, the line was out the door and we were starving. We were seated promptly which I was quite excited about. That's the only reason why I gave this place three stars instead of two. (Note: I had brunch here about four months ago and had a good experience but sat at the bar). After this experience, I probably won't go back. We were sat down, given our water & our orange juice and placed our order. Everything came out fast...score! But the entire order was wrong. It would have been nice to tell our waitress...except she was MIA. Not one time during our half-hour meal, did our waitress come back. I understand being busy but at the same time, refill my water glass please! The food wasn't terrible but it wasn't out of this world either. I probably won't be going back. I would rather wait in line for a half hour than to eat dry bread, overcooked eggs, and bacon that was hardly cooked (after asking for butter for my bread, eggs with cheese and crispy bacon). read more

This is one of my favorite places in Boston for brunch. Whenever I have friends or family visit me in the city, this is always my first choice for a great brunch meal and a mimosa to start off a lazy Saturday. The dining room has a simple elegance to it, with crisp white linens and plenty of morning light streaming in the many windows. My two favorite menu options are the roasted pepper frittata and the french toast with cider apples and creme fraiche. The frittata boasts a hearty portion of golden potatoes, peppers and sharp cheddar cheese, with toasted French bread on the side. The french toast is made with a thick, airy bread, then topped with delicious fall-inspired cider braised apples and a creme fraiche drizzle - absolute perfection. I recommend bringing along a brunch buddy who will share these two dishes with you so you can experience the best of both worlds. As if that's not enough to entice you, dishes are reasonably priced (both are around $10) and the staff is always attentive. The location is great for some shopping on Charles Street or a stroll through the Public Gardens after your meal. A lovely way to start off a relaxing weekend. read more

Brunch Review: We went to BHB for the first time on Sunday, Nov 7, 2011. We had the poached eggs and the scrambled eggs with salmon. The food was satisfying and filling but not necessarily exceptional. The fried potatoes were to uniform for my personal taste and missed flavor. The scrambled eggs had a nice texture. The coffee was free refill and my orange juice was freshly squeezed. We spent $36 in total. Our waitress was a sweetheart. We might go back for the atmosphere and the neighborhood but not necessarily because the food was so exceptional. read more

Very good brunch/breakfast place. Although packed due to Saturday morning traffic, this place was steadfast. The food is amazing. The omelette were fluffy and the meats were well cooked and flavored. I brought my fiance here for his birthday dinner last night. The menu is creative, diverse, and delicious (true foodies will be hard pressed to chose just one entree), the service was good, and the decor pleasing. We had a (complimentary) champagne toast, great bottle of wine (of which the price was not outrageously inflated like you find in many Boston restaurants), 3 (very generous) courses, and I was shocked when the bill came... for being in such a demanding location, quality of food, and the portion sizes, I was expecting it to be much more. A great bang-for-your-buck! This is definitely a great place to go for a nice, but not pretentious meal. We will most definitely revisit! read more

This is the second installment of my brunch experiences on Charles Street. Nina and I arrived early for the breakfast menu (not the brunch menu). Originally I was going to get the mushroom and swiss omelet but instead I got my most favorite meal in the entire world!!! Lox on a bagel with cream cheese. I would have given this place 5 stars but they didn't have capers and red onion to go with the lox, which was a big disappointment to me. Nina ordered the most delicious omelet that I have tasted in a long time; smoked salmon and cream cheese and chives (basically what I got, but inside of an egg). The Beacon Hill Bistro is very sophisticated and bright. This is the kind of brunch place that puts you at ease and encourages you to really enjoy the tasty food that is in front of you. I love the interior of BHB for breakfast and brunch -- the long, narrow room is very Parisian bistro-esque, and the atmosphere is enhanced by dish towel napkins, newspapers on those long wooden rods, and mirrors running along the back buffet seating. I had the "museli" with yogurt and fruit. I specifically asked for banana, and the waitress reassured me it came included. I was served toasted granola with yogurt, figs, dried apples, strawberries, and apricots. When I asked for bananas, the waitress seemed miffed and told me they were in the bowl....no, ma'am, they weren't. Sister and friend enjoyed the belgian waffles and mushroom and cheese omelet. Omelet was nothing special, but the homefries were more like non-greasy potato nuggets. read more

I came here with some of my girlfriends on a Saturday night since we wanted to try something new in Beacon Hill and we had an out-of-towner with us. We started with a bottle of wine and the oysters (which were a daily special). The oysters were delicious, but we asked the guy who brought them (not our waiter) if we could have cocktail sauce and saltines. He said he'd send over our waiter, but we waited for a while and she never came back. Eventually, another guy came back with the cocktail sauce, but ran away so fast we didn't get to ask again about the saltines so we went ahead and ate them with just the sauce. I'm glad we ate them because she didn't come back until the plate had been empty for 10 minutes. For the main dish, I had the Red Snapper and the waitress had no problem subsituting brussel sprouts for the broccoli. The fish was delicious - the outside was crisp and the fish was very flaky. I also loved the sweet potato. One of my friends had the gnocchi and I stole a bite and it was pretty good too, although the look and texture of the gnocchi was different than I expected (they were more elongated shapes and there was more of the other items than there was pasta pieces). At the end of our meal though, we had all cleaned our plates and agreed that we would go back for the food (despite it being fairly expensive). They left the wine bottle on the table and never refilled our glasses which I found odd. We would wait until our glasses were empty but then we had to refill them ourselves. Not a big deal, but when I'm at a restaurant this nice, I would have expected better service and to see our waitress more often. They also sat us in the far left of the restaurant which was right next to a side door to the outdoors and the door down to the bathroom. It was annoying to always have the bathroom door opening and closing, and there was a strong, cold draft coming from the outside and it was so cold next to the door that one of my friends had to put on her coat and a guy at the table next to us was joking about trying to start a fire with the candle on his table. read more

Went for bfast this morning with my son, first there is no brunch so not sure why it says that. The food was whatever, very strange bfast menu. I think it's more like a menu of; this is what's left over from dinner service so let's just add some eggs and pancakes and call it breakfast/brunch. Wouldn't come back. Our waiter was a upitty little prick as well, for some reason maybe because we were wearing shorts or the tattoos this guy had a attitude.... This review is for the hotel, as we did not dine at the bistro. Our room was pretty--painted walls and crown molding--and very clean. In fact, I was comfortable walking around the room barefoot, something I never, ever, do in hotels. The bed was comfortable and the linens were fresh and of good quality. The bathroom fixtures were older, but worked just fine. The location is perfect. You can walk to the statehouse, Boston Common, and the Public Garden. The neighborhood is safe and full of fun restaurants and shops. With all of that said, the room was teeny tiny. We--two adults and one toddler--were constantly tripping over each other. Additionally, there is no on-site parking, which isn't too surprising in Beacon Hill. Your options are to either risk parking on the street or to find a garage. We parked our car in the Boston Common garage, which cost about the same as a valet would at any other hotel in Boston, but it made checking in and checking out more challenging. Overall, the hotel is great, particularly if you are in the city without a car or an entourage. read more

What a pleasant surprise! My fiancé and I were walking through Beacon Hill trying to find a spot to have a quick app and drink before a show. We were instantly greeted by a wonderful host who also ended up being the main chef Tim. He shared with us the secret (no longer secret) rooftop terrace and recommended us trying out the chefs special "the Seafood Cocktail." We Love trying new food so we obliged. After grabbing our cocktails, Tim escorted us to a beautiful quiet and pleasant terrace to enjoy our meal. Very quickly did our food arrive: the smoked salmon rillette, the calamari and the seafood cocktail. Oh wow! Everything was absolutely amazing. The calamari was a heaping portion with a delicious lemon aioli. The smoked salmon was topped with the perfect portion of cavier, capers, and eggs and that seafood cocktail- words can not describe how delectable that was. Perfect app for a beautiful summer night. @Tim- you out did yourself. We will 100% be back! read more

I was in Wellesley for a conference, and ended up having a few hours on a Saturday night in Boston. My coworker and I were dropped off near Faneuil Hall and wanted to escape the masses of tourists, so we walked over to Beacon Hill to see if we could find a nice restaurant with tasty but not super heavy food, and stumbled upon the Beacon Hill Bistro. To start, we shared a Roasted Beet Salad with Thyme, Farmer's Cheese, and Shallot Vinaigrette and a Boston Bibb Lettuce Salad with Mango, Hearts of Palm, and Goat Cheese with Tarragon. The Bibb Lettuce salad was awesome - goat cheese, mango and hearts of palm all made the salad. Now, I'm a huge fan of beets, but the way the roasted beets were prepared didn't really do it for me. They shredded the beets, and then packed them into this little cake, with something creamy before roasting. All that did for me was make the beets lose their awesome flavor. Not a bad salad, but not my favorite. For our mains, we split the Fresh Herb Pasta Lasagna with Glacé Vegetables, Mustard Cream, Lentils and Pea Greens, and Truffle Vinaigrette along with the chef's special home-made Tagliatelle. I don't remember what was in the Tagliatelle, except that it was buttery and amazingly delicious. The lasagna was like no other lasagna I've tried - interesting flavors like mustard and lentils that blended well. For dessert, an Earl Grey Creme Brulee hit the spot, along with a delicious double espresso. The wine was delicious as was the cocktail we started off with. Great service, great food. My fiancé and I ended up eating here on a whim actually. We had stopped over at 75 Chestnut for a drink, and decided we were not ready to go home. So we walked into BHB and ended up having a delicious dinner. The layout what not what I would have expected when first walking into the establishment, but it works. The tables are small and cozy, and you sit fairly close to your neighbors. Drink selection is nice, and the wait staff are friendly. I would say that this restaurant is great for a few friends wanting to go out to wat before a show, or after. read more

I'm a tour guide and sometimes at the end of a long tour, especially when I'm about to go on my first day of vacation, I like to go in to restaurants in downtown Boston and have a meal by myself. Beacon Hill Bistro is one of my favorite places to do this. When I went on Monday, they showed me to a nice banquette in the corner, so I wouldn't be sandwiched between noisy parties of 6. Thank you! The server was attentive and, when I mentioned that a Hendricks Gin and Tonic should have a cucumber garnish, she went back and corrected the situation. My desired hamburger was not on the dinner menu, so I decided to have a salad with a beet terrine ( which I originally mis-read as "beef" terrine), with a horseradish-y sauce on it. It was delicious--firm and sweet, and flavorful. The rolls were hot, the salad was fresh, and the spiced Brussels Sprouts, though they could have been a bit more tender ( not mushy, just not quite so crunchy), had a lovely flavor. I love the ambiance as well. The low light, and the long window along Charles street make for a cozy feeling without any sense of claustrophobia which can often occur in spaces that are long and narrow, as this one is. read more

Hotel review: We've stayed here twice now. It's a European-style hotel - tiny rooms, only a dozen or so. It's cute, and reminds me of the days we lived in Beacon Hill - including the ability to hear your neighbors, the garbage trucks in the alley at 6am, and the sometimes dicey water pressure. It could use some TLC in the bathrooms (shower caulk, paint, etc) but nothing egregious. It is comfortable and cute. There is a cute little roof deck overlooking Charles Street, and of course, the bistro/bar downstairs. Perhaps because I have such nostalgia for my Beacon Hill years, I really enjoy staying here. If you're looking for a spiffy new, spacious hotel room, look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a complete Beacon Hill experience, and a great walking location, this is a great spot. the outstanding or award winning burger is a thing of the past. As if the chef who created it hasn't been there in years and there are just some line cooks etc.. just making burgers. It was no match for shake shack, which itself is just a mediocre burger. There was nothing gourmet or upscale or award winning about their burger. It was 2 small, dry, possibly overcooked patties. There should be one, it's too difficult to cook small burgers to come out juicy and delicious. one 8oz patty is better then 2 4oz patties. But I think they were 3oz before cooking. It was like 2 sliders. It was the first time I had a burger that was smaller than the bun. Did I mention it was dry? Small patties just become dry and flavorless. so no need for there to be 2. I was in town looking for a premier burger and what I got was a very nice, clean bistro that was quiet and relaxing. All good. But when you can't make a cheese burger why are they even on the menu? oh- did I mention the kitchen forgot the cheese? I've heard horrible things about the food in Boston but didn't expect a burger to flop. I see why there are no Michelin Star restaurants there. I think the way to go in Massachusetts is lobster rolls etc. Don't go looking for anything more, they can't deliver. read more

This is for just the bistro. Food was very good. I find a lot of very nice restaurants over salt food. Add this one to the list. Had the halibut special with morels , corn ravioli and toasted cherry tomato and truly, it was a Poitier over salted for my personal taster but the flavors were exceptional. Dinner salad was good. Service was good but I would have liked to be offered my second glass of wine when I finished my first so my dining companion did not have to wait for me to finish my dinner because I was awaiting my wine. Which explains why I only tipped 15% when I usually tip at least 20. Just FYI. read more
