Arrived on a Tuesday for the fish taco specials. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's been a long time and I noticed they expanded the dining area and the outdoor patio has been enlarged.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Tacos were yummy & healthy tasting as usual and [[HIGHLIGHT]]this place is great for people watching.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There are car meet ups in the parking lot so you might catch some supercars and parking congestion. There's usually a line here but the line moves promptly and the entire staff is friendly and efficient. Definitely will be returning here again.

The ocean is right there.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The decor is amazing.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ocean breeze, the beautiful fish on display, the friendly helpers are all there to lure you in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It is a fun place to have lunch.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The chowder arrived. We enjoyed it, but it tasted like they added too much flour. Okay, now comes our fish burritos. It is a cold flour tortilla, filled with plain white rice, cold beans, lettuce, fish and avocado. The taste was plain, meh. The fish was not seasoned at all. Not even salt. Why not season the fish? Add some cheese? Some pico? Some corn? Some pickled onions? Anything to add flavor? Chipolte has a much better burrito at half the price. All promise, but no substance.
[[HIGHLIGHT]]Bear Flag is my favorite spot to go to, especially the PCH location since you can view the ocean from some of the tables.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food consistently tastes fresh, and the quality keeps me coming back. The only downside is the parking situation, it's almost always a challenge, especially during busy hours. My favorite order is the Bear Flag Burrito. The fish is always fresh and gets a nice sear, which adds great flavor and texture. I do wish they were a little more generous with the Cajun seasoning, though, as the fish could use a bit more spice and depth. The half-pound tuna poke is another staple for me. The tuna is consistently fresh and marinated with shoyu sauce, sesame oil, sesame seeds, and scallions, creating a simple but delicious flavor that lets the quality of the fish shine. I always pair it with their chips, which are incredibly crunchy. That said, I feel like the chips changed about a year or two ago. They used to be thicker and sturdier, which made them perfect for scooping up poke. The current version still tastes good, but they seem to break more easily, and I definitely prefer the original chips. Overall, Bear Flag continues to deliver fresh seafood and satisfying meals. Despite the parking headaches and a few minor tweaks I'd love to see, it's still the best spot for poke and fish burritos/tacos in OC.
[[HIGHLIGHT]]I came in there were big fish decorations at the ceiling, it looked beautiful.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The inside area had tons of paintings and a big inside seating, but the outdoor seating is beautiful and right by these gated houses with beautiful houses[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food came out quick, service was good I only saw someone at the checkout table I got the salmon 1/4 lb for 17$ (1/2 was 21$, I wish I got that) and I got cucumber, soybeans, furikake, and crunchy chili garlic. I honestly didn't notice that they didn't give me crunchy chili garlic until I wrote this, which made me quite upset. The furikake seasoning was almost nothing, so I essentially only got cucumber and soybeans. The cucumber was okay not like a ton of sauce to go with them (I got Tommy sauce) so I'm not that happy with that, the soybeans were good. I got the crunchy chili garlic later, and it's pretty good. Update: I tried my friends bowl and it was so much better than mine. I am incredibly upset with how little flavor I got, as well as the size of my bowl (apart from the fish). Maybe it's the salmon, or what I chose, but get the tuna and make sure you get your stuff. The greens are quite good. This place is good, but my service and food experience was upsetting. I am giving it a 3, it could definitely be a 4 or 4.5.
I stopped by yesterday at 8:29pm They close at 9:00pm The cashier Reese R. (Her name was on my receipt) was so kind and bubbly even though it was late in the evening, I ordered the New England clam chowder and one Bear Flag Taco To Go. My clam chowder was given to me quick. So I sat down and took a spoonful of the clam chowder while waiting for the Bear Flag Taco. Big mistake though ....I should've ordered 2 Bear Flag Tacos. I'll be back Bear Flag Fish.
Poke here is always fresh. Their seafood is some of the freshest you can find. The fish market sells fresh cuts of whatever is in season and never disappoints. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Great location and atmosphere for some healthy fish.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The sides are customizable to fit any diet. Healthy and well portioned entrees, an easy pick. Staff is extremely friendly and the service is quick and reliable.
One of my favorite places that compare to poke from Hawaii! I've been to 2 of their locations and quality is always consistent and unmatched. The menu is great and all the food is so fresh and flavorful. The staff are always so friendly and even give suggestions if asked. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a casual spot so there is seating indoors, in the patio and outdoors as well.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Their sushi is delicious and so is their clam chowder. It's a must if you're looking for fresh fish!
Bearflags has always been my go to spot whenever I'm around the Crystal Cove for the last 10. I could say it wouldn't be a successful beach day without bearflags !! My go to order is always the bearflags burrito and either half a pound of salmon or tuna. This time I went with the tuna. Ahi Tuna Poke - it's not your traditional Hawaiian seasoned poke. But it sure is good. I think the seasoning goes perfectly with chips. The ahi tuna was nice and firm and paired will with the seasoning. Bearflags burrito - Was the star of the lunch! The burrito was filled with beans and rice and pico and avocados with their Tommy sauce. All in combination with the charred blackened flavor on the fish. My go to. I recommend getting their El Yucatera salsa from the counter to go with it !
I eat at this Bear Flag a few times a month and the fish is always good. The poke is fresh, the entrees, tacos, veggies, burritos and chowder, are all very good. The line usually goes through the restaurant and out the door to the sidewalk! It's worth the wait for a good, casual meal in a nice location.
We had an amazing experience at Bear Flag! The poke was fresh, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. We also ordered a Hugo Spritz and a margarita, and both were incredibly refreshing and paired perfectly with the food. One great tip: if bar seats are available, you can skip the line and grab a seat right away. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Great food, great drinks, and a great atmosphere--we'll definitely be back![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]
Love this place. Busy as can be especially weekends and in general. Food is good including their bear flag taco and their rolls.! You can also get oysters, shrimp, and a bunch of other seafood items like poke, shrimp, fish and other seafood type goods! All good! The place does have ample seating but this place has become popular especially after their last remodel as this place serves their customer purposes well. Good location, good vibes and good food! Beware that parking can sometimes be challenging because it is a small plaza in general and there are other places to eat as well. We've been here when Chris, Dillon, Frank and now Jake has been great! Verdict is a yeaaas!!

Came here for Taco Tuesday with my partner and her mom. We didn't realize, but the half off promo only applies to the Bear Flag taco. If you get a specialty or premium taco, there is no discount. I got three tacos, and my favorite was the scallop. I also got the king salmon and tuna poke tacos. I wasn't a huge fan of the king salmon, but I probably should have expected this since I prefer raw salmon over cooked salmon! The tuna poke taco was good but nothing special. Parking was nearly full on a weekday night. Service was quick and kind. The establishment itself is in a nice shopping center too! read more
Went here on a Saturday morning and it was super crowded. I would say the wait time was around 20 to 30 minutes. The service was all right however the cashier (blonde) was a bit rude and standoffish. Her attitude really did not embody a great experience. However, the food was great. The wait time for the food was longer than the actual wait in line. We waited for the food about for 40 minutes!!! And it was only on 2 burritos. But I can't complain because the quality is great. Nice atmosphere and they accept dogs so if you do have a puppy, you can enjoy lunch or dinner together! Price range was about 60 for 1 pound of poke, and 2 salmon burritos. Parking isn't too bad either, a large parking lot but it does get packed on weekends. Plan accordingly! read more
Right across from the beach along PCH, this Bear Flag Fish location is the perfect spot to grab lunch or dinner before or after the beach. I think what makes this restaurant special is how fresh the fish always is. I always get the poke or burritos, but I've also had their fish plates too. Can't really go wrong with anything but I love their poke and go out of my way to come here for it! There is usually a daily fish special that are usually really good. They have a bar you could drink at without waiting in line. Nothing hits better than a cold beer and fresh seafood! Dining experience here really screams of a beachside seafood. Parking can be tough sometimes as there's a lot of popular restaurants in the plaza like Javier's and Mastros. Lines can be long and out of the door but for good reason. It can also be hard to find a seat to dine in sometimes if it's crowded. You order first and find a seat with your order number. So may be smart to send one person to find a table while one person waits in line to order. read more

Bear flag is my favorite place the food is amazing and taste so fresh. The service is always top tier and quick. And the crystal cove location isn't favorite when I can sit outside and enjoy the beach view read more
This place obviously doesn't require any introduction amongst the locals, but definitely deserves my raving review. This is one of the few places I crave a lot in when I'm at school and make sure to visit several times when I'm home. Everything on the menu is great including the poke burrito, but my go to is the DIY poke bowl or a 1/2 lb of poke with chips for a snack. Great calamari too, and awesome drinks (very fun bar). Again, the location adds another layer of amazing views to this place making this location my favorite of the several in our area. Staff are all very cool and fun too! read more

Food is very fresh and tasty! The fish tacos are filling and great way to fill your appetite! The clam and mussels are very deep in flavor, especially if you soak the bread before you eat! The poke is amazing, however the sesame flavor is very strong. Personally would use a bit of Tommy's sauce and hot sauce. Sacrilegious I know... but the sesame flavor was overwhelming... read more

I've been to Bear Flag both here and in Huntington Beach, and I gotta say, I think the one in Newport has better quality poke, and has better ambiance. I am a massive lover of poke -- its one of my all time favorite things to eat. And Bear Flag does it the way they do it in Hawaii. I've only ever had the poke here because to be honest, I only ever come to Bear Flag when I'm craving poke! But they have a decent sized menu with plenty of seafood dishes to choose from. You can also buy cut fresh fish by the pound here if you want to take some home to make your own poke or sushi. The only types of poke I've seen here are tuna and salmon, with only one option for flavor. Just trust me and try both. The fish here is incredibly fresh and the poke is authentic and delicious. I ordered a pound of salmon on my last visit and demolished it in one sitting with the tortilla chips they provide for free on the side. I will always be a customer here, visiting whenever I am in the area! read more

Been coming here for many years, even before its beautiful renovation at this Newport location. It's always consistently delicious and is one of our family's favorite places to have lunch during our vacation stays in Newport and Laguna. The variety of fish choices is always fresh and any fish can be grilled and finished with different seasonings (Cajun, blackened, lemon butter, garlic butter). This time for my small platter I ordered opah with lemon butter with sides of sautéed veggies and rice. My hubby ordered a large platter of opah with garlic butter with sides of steamed broccoli and rice. These platters are a great value and so healthy and flavorful. We also shared a small clam chowder. One of the top three we've ever had. And I also. treated myself to 1/4 pound of ahi poke and chips. This is a great appetizer l!! Haiku: Bear Flag Fish Fresh fish at counters Food portions are generous Gorgeous ocean views. --- I had great expectations of this place from its glowing Yelp reviews. I love that there are cases of freshly caught fish and a plethora of seafood to choose from. The food portions are generous, but unfortunately, it lacked flavor. Perhaps their cooking is on the healthier side by laying off the salt. I do know the restaurant doesn't have any fryers, so nothing on the menu is deep-fried. We ordered: - Small seafood plate: I got a 1/3 pound of tuna and salmon poke and selected my two sides of sauteed veggies and black beans. This is such a healthy dish with a colorful assortment of veggies, beans, and poke. I ordered a side of rice because I like to eat my poke with rice. I would have liked my poke to have more flavor though. - Bear flag burrito: It was a hefty burrito filled with panko-crusted whitefish and all the fixings. However, it was also bland. - Kid's guppy plate: Panko-crusted fish sticks and a side. We chose sauteed veggies. I was very impressed by the sheer size and nutritional content of this dish. The fish sticks weren't deep fried and the veggies comprised of sauteed broccoli, carrots, onions, bell peppers, and squash. Service is friendly and patient. It's a short drive from Crystal Cove State Park. I would come again to try their dishes again. read more

such a cute location with great seating and an indoor/outdoor aesthetic, loved the local & coastal decor. definitely does get busy but they do a good job at keeping wait times down. you can taste the quality of the fish in each dish and for the portion size it is reasonably priced. out of all three the poke bowl, peruvian ceviche and guacamole are definitely worth trying. if you are craving seafood and a cool spot this will satisfy!! read more
Real taste of sea food for sure, in the best relaxing neighborhood. Just be aware of the long line during weekends and do your research on what you wanna order so you wont rush through when its your time! Kinda of a self service type of restaurant, you order and go find a table yourself. The backyard is nice on sunny days. Always get the clam chowder and cant go wrong with poke. We got fish of the day with rice and vegetables. They have wine and beer too. Nice place to sit and watch people and eat your healthy seafood! read more

This is one of my favorite places. At lunch time , there is usually a line and a wait. I typically get the order to go. The ceviche, cucumber salad and chowder are delicious. The restaurant is in Crystal Cove which is busy on the weekend so parking and finding a place to sit can be a challenge. The service is friendly even though they are busy and the line moves quickly so the wait is not bad. read more
The view at this Bear Flag makes it better than the other Newport Beach location. We came shortly after they opened and were able to secure a table that had the ocean view. It's fast casual so you place your order and find a table. There is seating indoors and outdoors. I would have ordered the poke, but since it was a cold day, I got a Cioppino and fish taco instead. The Cioppino, which came with a slice of bread, was full of fish and perfect for the cold weather. The fish taco was ok - a little bland but the salsa definitely helped perk it up. The food came on platters but the Cioppino was served in a plastic container, which seemed kind of cheap. I got a couple of pounds of poke (ahi and salmon) to go. They each came with a bag of chips. Their poke is much better than their tacos, but it's also a lot more expensive. Service was friendly. Free parking (with a nice view) in the lot. read more

Was quite excited to try this place considering my love for poke. Workers were friendly and there was very nice outdoor seating nestled within the plaza. I liked the overall sea themes that the interior had going on. Salmon Poke with Chips (3/5): Looked a lot better than it tasted. It was around 13 dollars from what I remember. Not very flavorful and fish texture was decent. Had to add extra spicy mayo and soy sauce for it to be okay. Would rather go to a poke bowl store for some poke. Whitefish Burrito (3/5): Decent but not very flavorful. Didn't love the wrap and there wasn't much fish compared to the other fillings inside. read more

Bear flag is probably my favorite spot for poke in Orange County! I have come here many times and the fish is consistently delicious. I usually order 1 pound of salmon poke, 1 pound of tuna poke, and 1 pound of ceviche. The ceviche is probably my favorite, but you can't go wrong with any of them! Bear flags serves these all up with a side of tortilla chips but you can make your own poke bowls at home if you'd like. I believe you can also have a poke bowl made here but I prefer to just buy the fish and do what I wish at home with it. Their calamari is also amazing! I find the price rather reasonable, especially because you are only getting the fish and you can stretch the fish pretty far among multiple people! I usually order about 1/2 of fish per person. The inside can get crowded, but a tip is if you keep walking towards the Trader Joe's there is a nice picnic area with an ocean view that is a lot nicer than the seating options closer to bear flag! Overall, I highly recommend bear flag! The service is fast and the food is great. read more

Coming all the way from San Diego because I love love love your fish so much. I work in a resort and whenever i hear a guest is asking a good place to eat fish i recommend your place! Unfortunately, today was very disappointing!! I came in with my son, we had a nice day out together and planned to get some calamari fries and a fish burrito, guacamole and chips and your famous Tommy sauce to take on our way back to SD. Ofcourse, I understand, its sunday,it was insane busy. Finally, after half an hour we got our food and took it to the car. Just when we drove towards Laguna we found out our food was just lukewarm. The calamari didn't taste like it always taste, there was no flavor, no salt or herbs used..and almost cold. I was too tired to drive back and to wait again. I was so excited to get your fish and soooo disappointed with the food we got..so sad that the quality goes down 80% when it's busy. Also, I paid $50 for something like that, i had to warm up whenever I got home very hungry... read more
