In my search for an elevated dining experience in Bakersfield, it was inevitable I come to try The Belvedere Room at The Padre Hotel. I've stayed at the hotel a few times, and have always been impressed with how transformative the structure and atmosphere are. It truly feels otherworldly, and almost out of place in the Bakersfield downtown scene, and I say that with the utmost adoration. It was then with high expectations, my date and I sat for dinner at the Belevedere. Upon entering the large open space, it immediately felt more like a banquet hall than a fine dining establishment, although the local touches have their charm. Straight away, we were seated at our comfortable table for 2, and took our time browsing all options. The extensive cocktail menu and wine list did not disappoint, and both are on par with what you will find at upscale establishments in other larger metropolitan areas. The dinner menu, while diverse, raised a number of eyebrows. At the risk of sounding pretentious, a $65 steak seems a bit out of place in Bakersfield, despite the Prime Cut quality the restaurant seems to pride itself in. However, after an awkward exchange with our server, we decided to play it a bit more safe. If you are going to offer high end cuisine, and elegant nightly specials, I expect your staff to know what "U-10" is referencing, and not referring to your scallop dish as "large." And while I don't require much attention, I would appreciate not waiting 15-20 minutes between any face time with my server to get an order placed. When we were finally able to order, we opted for the Steak Tartar, which in presentation was beautiful and appealing, but in taste was mediocre and seemed to lack some flavor. Still, not bad, all things considered. For our mains, despite wanting steak, we opted for the carbonara and salmon plates. The carbonara was a nice spin on the traditional pasta, and had great flavor. The salmon, was presented as a stand-alone dish, without any cohesive accompaniments or flavors. It was cooked well, but the paltry "sides" were cold, and flavorless. While I understand the a-la-carte concept, to offer a dish with no structure or complimentary flavors is not on par with your pricing or identity as a fine dining establishment. We decided to add the mushroom truffle risotto as a side, and I'm happy to say it was one of the best aspects of our meal. For dessert, we had a spin on flourless chocolate cake. It's hard to elevate this particularly safe dessert, and unsurprisingly, nothing about it was special. I would've loved to have seen something more unique. All in all, it was an up and down experience. While the food was overall good, the quality from top to bottom does not reflect the price point this restaurant is trying to command. I've visited JRDN, their Sister restaurant in San Diego, and this is nowhere near that level of service or quality, but the prices are far too comparable. I don't know that I can recommend the Belvedere Room, given my expectations of fine-dining, and the mediocre experience I had, and doubt I come back. read more

Tonight we celebrated our five year anniversary and he last big date night before our baby arrives. I was hesitant to get too excited as we have not had great dining experiences since arriving in Bakersfield. Not only were any expectations met, they were far beyond exceeded. We had Excellent service at a cocktail party we hosted in the Belvedere at The Padre. Our party was appx. 120 people. Everybody had a great time and loved the venue, very classy. The hot and cold appetizers were great. Everyone loved the Sliders and the Mini Crab-cakes . We had an open bar - good bartender, good variety of wines, beers, and top shelf was available for or guests. The servers were very good at taking care of our guests. We had a band and a dance floor was set up for us. The drapes at the doorway, entering the area, were pulled closed to allow for privacy. @@Only downfall - uninvited people tried to slip in for drinks from our open bar. I suggest using a unique hand stamp or drink tickets to keep out the uninvited party crashers . I will definitely be coming back to Belvedere at The Padre the next time we host a similar function. read more

They give you good portions here, for a gourmet restaurant. I had the New York steak and it was good, almost too much to eat. They are pricy here, so expect to spend $100+ for two people to have a good dinner. I like that they have valet parking, use that if you can. read more

My wife and I randomly selected the Belvedere Room at the Padre Hotel for a Thursday eve dinner. We had no reservations and arrived at about 5:45 PM. We were seated promptly by a very friendly, garrulous maître d'. The tables are widely spaced, as dictated by covid-19 protocols, simply and nicely appointed. The dining room is obviously an old structure but nicely renovated with both modern touches and older references (look down at the carpet). It's hot, hot, hot in Bakersfield and the air conditioning struggled to keep up but it wasn't uncomfortable. The ceiling being 20' height probably contributed to this. My wife and I had no idea what to order. There were no off-menu specials and our waiter basically said everything was good. My wife ordered the Scottish salmon and I ordered the pork chop. We added a side of mushroom risotto and whipped potatoes. My wife ordered a glass of chardonnay, which turned out to be delicious, and I stuck with tap water. When we saw what was delivered to our table we realized we'd over-ordered. There was food for either two meals (or four people). We took lots of food home and enjoyed a second dinner the next night. Everything we were served was absolutely delicious. My wife and I are not food snobs but we eat out frequently and are appreciative of good food (read gourmets). (We also both cook competently.) I highly recommend this restaurant. What a pleasant, incredible find in Bakersfield. Be prepared to be overfed with excellent food and to be taken care of by competent, professional staff. read more

Just enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the Belvedere. There is no other dining room in Bakersfield that offers such variety, high quality, excellent service, and convivial atmosphere as here. From the properly prepared martinis, to the perfectly proportioned first courses, the extraordinary quality of the beef, to the carefully chosen and well presented cheese plate, everything was spot on. When we commented that the items on the dessert menu were a little heavy, they brought strawberry sorbet, which was not on the menu. The hostess, waiters,and sommelier were all friendly and welcoming, without being casual or overly familiar. This place, in the Padre Hotel, is pretty and the service is very good. Unfortunately, the food is really amateurish and subpar. The Caesar salad is over peppery and is in now way a classic version. What a disappointment! We had a large party (11), but felt ignored by the waitstaff. Three of us ordered and enjoyed the rack of elk. The sauce bordered on too sweet and the plating left no room for sides. Friends who ordered steaks were happy with their choices, although a couple were over-cooked. Good reports in the chicken and salmon, too. Tasty beet salads were way too small; wedges and caesars fair. My arugula salad was generous, but under-dressed. We ordered lots of sides: Brussels sprouts, mashed potatoes, potato gratin, cauliflower, mushrooms and risotto. My favorite grilled asparagus wasn't available even though I had been told it was when I made the reservation the day before. None of the sides stood out. They ranged from okay to meh. "Too rich" was the common denominator. To sum up, salads rate 3 to 4 stars, proteins were 4 to 5 stars, sides were 2 to 3, and service was a 1/2 Star, (especially considering the prices)! Too bad! We had the pleasure of having dinner here on Saturday night, and had such a wonderful experience. The dining room was beautiful, service attentive and prompt and our meal was delicious. I should start by saying that my daughter has several diet restrictions and eating out can be a challenge, but the chef, pantry chef and our server Jordan were accommodating and creative. The wine list and seasonal menu gave us so much to choose from, and the complimentary chocolate truffle and fresh berries were the perfect end to our evening. We decided to try this restaurant out last night after hearing how fantastic the food was but it was truly lackluster. Our waitress was nice and friendly but service felt extremely slow. I believe she had to work the restaurant and the bar area. Which is a little frustrating after how much you are spending for a dinner. We felt as though we better order something now or else we wouldn't get it. She had to apologize to us quite a few times for how long it took to order our drinks, which once they arrived weren't even worth a fraction of the price. We decided to try another kind of drink only to have my husbands to be just disgusting and mine had something floating in it that wasn't apart of my order. We ordered the cheese board which was okay, I've had better elsewhere and the meat selection was kind of off. He ordered the pasta which was actually pretty good and I ordered the lamb shank. My lentil were unevenly cooked and the topping for the shank was overpowered by fennel to the point that all it reminded me off was tarter sauce.. we were excited to order desert but decided against it after the other items were unsatisfactory. The steak at dinner was incredibly juicy and tender, with an awesome choice of butters and sauces. Before dinner, we went up the elevator to the second floor to the rooftop bar. A really good latin band was playing. Great vibe, both to the music and the scene. Good drinks with a nice selection of single malt scotch. After enjoying the music and a cocktail, we went back downstairs to the Belvedere. The service was good. First thing I noticed was the interesting and varied menu. I'm told the steaks are good here, but when I heard about the wild boar special, I was in. One friend had the ling cod. Several did get a steak. Luckily, I was able to taste them all. Desserts were very good. We brought our own homemade wine for a corkage fee. The waitress decanted it for us. Ended up buying a few bottle off the wine list as well. The Justin Isoceles was very good. I would definitely go back. Oh, why not give it 5 stars? I guess I reserve that for truly great restaurants, regardless of location. For parking, you have a few choices. They have valet at the front door or you can self park in their garage. The neighborhood can sometimes get marginal after dark, so wouldn't want to walk too far by myself. read more

This place needs to call Kitchen Nightmares. The last two times we went (the second being with a group because I never wanted to go back) were awful. They were out of nearly EVERYTHING including things they told us they had after telling us what they didn't. This happened the first time we went (on a Friday) so right when we were seated last night I asked them what they were out of, because, after all, that was my last experience. It's pretty bad when you sit down and the first thing you have to ask is "what do you have to eat?" They told us they were out of Ribeye, then said they had Ribeye, then said they had Lamb, but no Duck, turned out after I ordered Lamb that they were out of Lamb but had Duck. I ordered Sirloin instead, was told they were out of Sirloin. What the... We were even offered Halibut, which wasn't on the menu since the 5 out of 7 ordered the Ribeye (which we were told after we all ordered to order again since they were out). We were told the Chef could pan sear it as a special order since they took the whole tables order and had to come back to tell us they were out of what we ordered (which, again, they told us they had). So one person ordered the Halibut, and the server came back telling us the Chef was too busy and he would not, in fact, be serving us Halibut. I felt terrible for the server. They told us they were out of so much because they were restocking Friday. Which is total crap because the first time we went was on a Friday...and guess what..they were out of half the menu. The manager was apologetic and bought our bottle of wine, which was great of him. The manager and the servers were the only plus for sure. They're the only reason why this gets 2 stars. Needless to say, we left hungry and upset. They lost out on probably half a grand last night and actually more since the 7 of us will not be repeat customers. It's true what they say... a bad experience causes one person to tell a lot of other people, and this one takes the cake. Not a way to run a business. P.S. Of course it's dressy and you should be looking fancy to sit at a table but it's appropriate to just bring the wife (or gf or whoever the date is) here and she will love it too. We had dinner here while staying in the hotel overnight. Nice selection of entrees, veggie sides, salads, wine by the glass and craft cocktails. Our waitress and staff were great. Cons were the slow service, my pork was overdone, and the ice cream was freezer burned with a crystalline texture and more like an ice than a cream. Halfway through that time, the let us know that they were out of chicken! There were several steaks ordered at our table, most medium, one medium rare. All showed up RARE. I'm not picky about steak at all, but this was so rare I could only eat a couple bites. I will say, the flourless chocolate cake was fantastic. The dinner I ate was amazing! The short rib and Yorkshire pudding was very flavorful and the perfect bite. The halibut was to die for! The three bottles of wine were very good as well.
