First time at Benihana but otherwise a mega hibachi fan. We had a reservation so we didn't have to wait long at all. Our server worked hard and the food was good but the show was completely silent and nothing special. We also didn't know that not only did the holiday menu cost more but they did not serve the green tea or the dessert. Also to share a plate it was $25 additional cost. Plus it's white rice that comes with the meal and an extra $5ish for fried..sad. Not a good experience last night at dinner. For the record, we dine and love the Benihana's by our house and frequent often but dinner here was mediocre for what we paid and the surprise on the bill at the end warrants a review. We were a family of 4 for teppanyaki (our 2 children are 7 yrs old and 11 mo) naturally there was another group/ family dining with us to fill the seats. Both my wife and I ordered the filet & lobster, filet was great, lobster tasted fishy or not fresh, the fried rice was just ok, everything else was ok; soup, salad, shrimp app. Until the bill came...they add 18% to your bill regardless of how many are in your party. By yourself, party of 2 or 3 etc. you will have 18% gratuity added to your bill...The manager personally came over to our table to verbally let us know this is the "policy" of the restaurant. I'm not sure the definition of gratuity is understood here.... I would have been more than happy to tip 20% since our waitress was attentive and quick with requests. The fact that your location adds their own gratuity based on just dining here seems like extortion. We paid the bill with their own added tip and left promptly. This was my second time coming to a Benihana and will likely be my last. So my family and I came up to Milwaukee for my aunt's 65th birthday. We made reservations for 6pm as there were 7 of us in our party. We arrived at the restaurant and valet parked 2 vehicles. The hostess told us to wait in the waiting area which is pretty hard to find. After about 5 minutes the restaurant manager seated us at our table with 2 additional people already seated. That makes 9 people for an 8 person table. If you've never been to Benihana before, 9 people will not fit. Imagine 5 people in the backseat of your car, that was us. My cousin immediately asked for our party to be moved to a different table due to the lack of room but the manager(bald head...) said that we would have to go back downstairs and wait for one to become available which could be a few hours. His cavalier tone let me know this experience wasn't going to be good and reservations are pointless here. Because I was the one paying for our party, I then got up and pulled the manager aside. I explained to him that it was my aunt's 65th birthday and asked if Benihana could be more accommodating and seat us at a table where we can actually enjoy our meal. A quick scan of the room showed 3 empty tables that would seat us comfortably. His response to my request started with "look buddy"...... It kind of went blank after that because I felt a bit belittled being called buddy by the manager. Nevertheless, that conversation ended with him basically telling me to sit my behind down and shut up so that's what I did. I was sure to grab extra napkins to wipe the sweat permeating the temples of my loved ones before I sat down though. We considered leaving but there were a few tummy growls so we stayed. Maybe he GOOGLED who my aunt was because he came back after some time and asked if we wanted a different table. What? Did he really just ask that silly question is the look on everyone's face. We finally got moved to a table that we could enjoy my aunt's 65th birthday and our meal. That's what should have been done from the beginning. If we didn't get moved, the waiter (who was nice and courteous) was not going to get a tip and I can't imagine how mad he would have been at the manager. Even though my family will not be returning to Benihana, here are just a few tips for the bald headed manager.I think your name was Lizar or something like that. Never call a paying guest "buddy" inside the establishment. Try sir instead. Calling someone dude, bro, buddy or anything other than ma'am or sir may come off as offensive. Learn how to properly allocate company resources. If you can't get a simple seating chart right, what else are you mishandling? *Upper management may want to check the safe and audit the books! Focus on personal stress management. It wasn't even that busy in there and you were panicking. Do it with me...Woo Saa. Composure in tough times isn't easy to learn but you're in the restaurant business so you need to catch up a bit. Don't judge a book by its cover or ethnicity to be specific. Treat everyone fairly and you'll go far in life. Though the onion volcano put smiles back on our faces, two of Milwaukee's most influential and family did not feel welcomed and you were the cause. If you are ever going to be a true leader, exemplify world class customer service and stay away from that toxic, arrogant demeanor that could put your career in jeopardy. LASTLY, clean those nasty tables better. No one should have to look at old, hard rice, egg, chicken, and shrimp from weeks ago in the cracks of your tables while they eat. My wife, sister-in-law, and I were very excited to try this place out, and on top of it they gave me a birthday coupon when I signed up for their mailing list. We were greeted and told the hostess and wait staff about my birthday and how excited we were. We sat down and quickly made friends with the other people at the table and talked about some current events and sports amongst other things. The waitress came by and asked if there were any special occasions, to which I raised my hand, "it's my birthday!". A different waitress came by and then asked to see my coupon which I pulled out on my phone quickly. It had everything from my name, birthday, QR code/barcode, etc. and I also had my driver's license to show my birthday, but they were just so extremely adamant that they will not accept seeing it on my phone. They wanted a physical printed out copy. I profusely apologized and said I unfortunately did not know that and if there was any way they can just scan the code off my phone I would be so appreciative. They said absolutely not. I said, can I please just use the printer in your office then? They said absolutely not. I said is there any place around there, even a FedEx/Kinkos or other close by business where I can just go quickly to print this out and then come back, and they said no and I will likely lose my spot if I leave because they start the dinner at a certain time. This happened in front of all the other customers in the restaurant and I just felt so extremely humiliated that I just left. It honestly wasn't even about the coupon thing, just how rude everyone was and unprofessional, and the principal of the whole matter. They could have very easily just honored this coupon but instead I ended up not only apologizing to them, but to my family that we had to leave and to the other customers for wasting their time. I went to dinner here for my moms birthday, and I was kind of nervous considering past/recent reviews. But I'm really glad we went! The food is great, and our server, who also was the sushi chef (I think?) was also great. He was working really hard, but the restaurant was veryyyyyy under staffed, and it has been the past few times I've gone. Last night was my second experience at Benihana, and it will probably be my last.(The first time was back in March for my birthday.) This time around, a friend of mine invited us to for her birthday---seemingly the only reason people go to this restaurant. I heard the birthday song being sang every 5 minutes. We arrived early and were instructed to head to the bar for a drink. Well, that would be possible if someone was working behind the bar? As a large group of people sat around the bar staring at each other, wondering if they just don't like to make money--we were told our table was ready. The ambiance in this restaurant is like the people from World Market were given a very little budget and instructed to dress up a diner. It's definitely not fancy. Our server (Erin), was training a new employee. She must have been so enthused to have to do this as we were given an attitude as though we were inconveniencing her by sitting at her table. If looks could kill--we would all be dead. Yah, I know you automatically get 17% of a pretty guaranteed, large check---that doesn't give you a license to give bad service. Our hibachi chef packed a smile, but lacked the luster needed to excite us all. All around us we were hearing groups of people cheering for the show they were given--all we did was feel bad for the guy who couldn't make a volcano out of onion rings, or for being given death glares by our amazing server. The food was Ok. Could use a little more seasoning and a little less drowning in soy sauce. The dinner & a show effect is the reason people go there. It isn't because they have the best lemon chicken or sushi in town. For the price we paid for dinner and drinks--I would expect: Much better service. Erin, I don't care how bad of a mood you were in--you are never to let that show through. Also, when you are training an employee, you don't yell at her in front of your table. The only odd thing was when my entree came to the table, the "hostess?" followed to tell me that the cook had made a mistake in giving me fried rice instead of white and that normally they would charge me an additional $3.50. I am so torn as what to rate. When I got inside the decor is less than nice. Carpet is dirty, decode badly needs to be update and the setup is weird. I was asked to wait for a hibachi table to open and wait at the bar. After 10 mins I had to ask for a bar tender to get me a drink. He brought me a drink menu then left again. I had to hunt him down twice. The tables are on the second floor which was a little nicer. And I was happy to see I wasn't the only one in the restaurant. One star is very gracious here. Why do they cook all the seafood first before even starting the fried rice and vegetables which take majority of the time to cook? I understand the appetizer shrimp going first, but everyone's lobster and other seafood was thrown on first thing. I want my shrimp and steak meal served relatively close in time so I can eat it together. My shrimp was cold by the time everything else was done. Makes no sense. I was so excited to go to Benihana on Christmas. It was my first time going. We had a reservation and did t have to wait long to be seated. Our waitress was friendly, helpful and courteous. They had a special holiday menu with inflated prices. I guess I can understand that considering the workers are there on a holiday. The salad was okay. I really enjoyed the hibachi soup. I ordered the land and sea hibachi. I was really looking forward to watching the chef perform as he prepared our meal. Unfortunately, he was very underwhelming. I was hoping to send pictures to my in-laws as this dinner was their gift. The only picture opportunity was of the flaming rings of onions. But, the food was delicious. Our server told us that normally dessert was included with the meal, but not for the holiday menu. Also, the menu said that green tea would be served, but it was never offered. I went to enjoy dinner with my wife last night and boy is this Benihana different. Like the other reviews say the place definitely needs a remodel. But let's get to the good part, don't come at 8:30 pm because the cooks and servers are ready to leave. Our cook came out and he was in a hurry, he didn't cook the young lady next to me vegetables correctly, and he burnt my lobster for starters, then when the manager came out he was extremely rude, never have I dealt with a manager with such low people skills and horrible customer service, the service I received from the manager was the reason I lost my appetite and couldn't eat the food. Took my family this past weekend to celebrate my daughters graduation. We've always looked at this place as a special occasion restaurant that everyone enjoys. The performance is always entertaining and it's a very social meal. Our experience was okay, the food was good but not spectacular. Service was prompt and friendly. The main reason for a 3 star rating is that this location is in dire need of an update. The stairway you take to the second floor looks like it is more fit as a service area, not for guests. Also, the bathrooms on the second floor haven't been touched since the building was put up. There are cracked tiles and delaminating countertops abound. Please update this location, I think people will start to look elsewhere for this type of dining experience. read more

Really a shame, this place has gone downhill since I lived in Milwaukee years ago. I was back this past weekend with some friends for a card tournament and we decided to end the night with some Hibachi fun. Sadly didn't turn out that way. Upon entering, our name was taken and we were told there would be a wait so we could go to the bar or a nearby table until ours upstairs was ready. I asked how long they expected or where we were on the list since we had to drive back to Madison afterwards. They couldn't tell me even a rough estimate which should have been a warning flag. At the bar, the bartender who seemed unmotivated and in a poor mood was arguing with a woman who was on her cell phone. The woman was being incredibly rude, it sounded like she had complaints about her service and a dish, but she was talking on the phone while the bartender was trying to work it out with her and she wasn't being very receptive. We sat for 10 minutes watching this transpire before even being greeted. Finally after 20 minutes I got up to check on our wait. I explained to them we were from out of town and had to leave after dinner, not in a pushy way at all but just so I could get some kind of inkling as to when we were going to eat. After they called upstairs and one of the employees from up there came down, they told me I could wait by the bar for more information. I explained we had already been doing that. Finally they said it would be just a few minutes. After a few minutes we did get seated. Waited another 10 minutes for service, and our server was very awkward when she finally did arrive. Ultimately the chef came and was polite and the land and sea that several of us had was great (Filet Mignon, Scallops, + all the sides). He didn't do much in the way of tricks, in the past at this franchise and other Hibachi's there's been fire and exciting knife throws, he just went through the motions and served us food. At the end the server came by to give us our deserts, then rushed us into the bill process and ended up giving the wrong bill order to one of my friends. She corrected this and was not making any sense when talking to us at the table about it. Granted, it was exceptionally noisy in there, and while I like fun, lively atmospheres at Hibachi, it was hard to hold a conversation. We finally settled up and left. You know the drill. You sit down around a big piping hot metal cooking surface and are then enticed and delighted by the mind-bending stunts by the hibachi chef-extraordinaire. He tosses knives in the air, cuts onions and other vegetables so fast you can barely see the incisions being made. He flips a piece of shrimp up in the air and it lands in his pocket. He delights young and old alike with his onion volcano. This is all well and good, and like any other hibachi place, you never leave Benihana totally unsatisfied. The food is solid but never quite lives up to the show. The service is good but not excellent. You get what you pay for. At Benihana, you're paying for the food and the entertainment. Horrible from the moment we walked in. It was my son's birthday and I had printed up his $30 dinner certificate. I have never been treated with such disrespect from the moment we walked in until the moment we walked out, never even having been served water. My son likes both hibachi and sushi, but, I couldn't help but noticing that everyone upstairs working in the hibachi area was male and not Japanese (I'm half Japanese, so I thought it was odd). The busboy was the first one to loudly berate to poor hostess that was downstairs, who looked miserable. Then our server became irate that my son (who is 15) didn't have an ID to prove his birthday! We never even ate the food. I tried to speak to the manager about the server, and he was equally rude. We left and went to Samurai on Port Washington Rd in Glendale. Try it. You won't be disappointed!! Asian staff, men and women who actually understand Japanese (I tend to order off menu knowing what most kitchens have but may not advertise). I went here for my friends birthday and I've never been treated worse. They turned the vents off when we finished eating, and our table instantly turned to about 0 degrees. When I asked the server to call over the manager, all of our food was freezing, we had to put on our jackets, and we could see our breath. When that server did nothing, another server walked by and I asked to see the manager. When that second server did NOTHING, someone walked up to speak to a manager, who said, "what do you want me to do?" Turn on the heat, pherhaps? When another manager finally came over after we talked to a third server, he also said there was nothing he would do. There were 12 people, freezing under this table with cold food (that was also shitty and not worth $40). We asked him to give at least the birthday girl a refund or something and they said no. We sit at the bar and after a while some guy comes out and starts talking to a lady from the large party. We aren't acknowledged & I hear the lady say they've been waiting for 20 mins. So this was my first time at this Benihana - and it left a lot to be desired. I was at first pleasantly surprised that they have a private parking lot, and that is a real plus for the downtown location. But that was probably the highlight of the night. We walked in and the host seemed extremely busy although there were only a few people sitting in the sushi area. I thought it was somewhat odd to walk up a flight of stairs to get to the Teppanyaki area, but I did appreciate the windows that wrap around the two walls of the building - a nice surprise. But the restaurant seemed a bit chilly and pretty loud - for some reason it was a family night and children everywhere - I won't hold that against Benihana, it just took me by surprise. Our server seemed less than excited to be working and our chef talked at a whisper. I mean our service was good, but they seemed more like they were going through the motions more than anything. The show is the same as always and the food was okay. I don't know when they went from miso soup to onion soup - I was not a fan, kinda tastes like leftover fried onion strings in a flavored broth. The salad dressing tasted slightly bitter to me as well. Our entree items were okay, nothing spectacular. We also ordered a couple of sushi rolls - again okay, nothing special. We were stuffed by the time we left, but really I would have rather gone somewhere else. I'll give the sushi bar another try, but I'll pass on the Teppanyaki. read more

I came here for a group dinner for our work staff and there were about 20 of us. It honestly didn't seem like our waiters were happy to take care of us. I know we were a big group and things can get a little confusing but doesn't mean you can get a little snappy. One of the servers seemed so irritated he snatched the plate I was trying to hand to him, out of my hand which caused me to spill my water all over the table and my lap. I guess things looked as if it was taken care of because he didnt even come back to help, nor hand more me more towels. I felt as that was rude. We accidently spilled another water but there was someone, not that waiter, who helped us clean it up. I don't see how hard it is. Anyway, our hibachi cook, Javier, was awesome! We were very pleased and enjoyed him as our cook. He even let one of the girls at our table try to work the hibachi grill. That was really cool! He also tossed food so we can try catching it in our mouths. (I missed..lol) Overall, he was just a fun guy and the food was good! I enjoyed my time at Benihana's and I've been here a couple times before. It was just some of the poor service that was recieved is not appreciated. This was my last stop during Downtown Dining week. I went for the mushroom appetizer, which is pretty much just mushrooms...but they were delicious :) Then the teriyaki beef. It was cooked perfectly, and served also with mushrooms. But the only vegetable they gave us was zucchini. I'm guessing that was the cheapest veggie of the week they could get. I noticed all the other tables were served zucchini as well. The last item he served us was a huge pile of onions. By the time he was ready to dish them out, half of us were finished eating. Most of the people refused, and I ended up with half my plate covered in onions. It was a little weird. I chose the sherbert for dessert, and it was very refreshing after my serious onion breath. They also offered us tea, which I thought was very nice. Our waitress was very odd. It felt like she hadn't been there long, or just wasn't very good at her job. She made uncomfortable jokes, and just seemed awkward the whole time. Our chef was very nice, but he was having a hard time getting any of his fancy tricks to work. All in all it was an ok meal. Reluctantly, we sat down by the bar to wait and have a drink. However, there was no bartender. So we waited 30 minutes. We did not see a bartender the whole time. We also didnt see a waitress or a hibachi chef or any food or anything for 30 minutes. My mom was waiting by the front the whole time and she said the dude checking people in was telling everyone the same thing...30 minute wait, whether they had a reservation or not. We went there on a Wednesday night. We did not make reservations, so we were told to sit in the waiting area, which is no problem, we always have to wait. While we were waiting, a man came up to us and asked if we parked in the parking lot, it was hard to understand him, and I was not quite sure what he asked so he then said you parked your car in the lot, yes? Yes I did, he then tells me it is $5 for parking. I asked when did that start, we never paid for parking before, he said parking is $5, I then saw the sign "valet parking $5" Yes I had to pay $5 for valet parking and I parked and retrieved my own car. We were seated, and the server was fantastic. She was always checking to see if everything was OK and if we needed anything. We got our soup, then the salad and then 3 other people were seated at our table. Once they were done with their soup and salad, the chef came to the hibachi. This has to be the most disappointed I have ever been with the restaurant. When he cooked and served the food, the people on the other side of the table were always served first and we got what was leftover, and the serving sizes were definitely not the same. We had smaller servings. For the veggies, you get zucchini and onions. I thought my serving was small and did not have much zucchini until I looked at my husband's serving. His serving was VERY small and he got maybe 5 diced zucchini, the rest were onions. And this also happened with the mushrooms, we got what was leftover on the grill. My bowl of chicken fried rice was shorted and he had extra left on the grill, instead of filling my bowl all the way, he gave it to the person that ordered white rice. My big question is, why ask me how I want my steak done if you are going to put all of them on the grill at the same time, cut them up and serve them individually one at a time, which I really did not mind as I then knew we were going to get the full steak we paid for. But it was very over done as we were served last and on the grill the longest. We both asked for medium, it was very well done and not real tender. I had the Rocky Choice which included steak and chicken. The chicken was over done and dry. Usually when we go there, the serving is switched up a bit, and I have never had this happen before in which we were not served a full serving of food. We were not rude, grumpy, or anything else. We were friendly, laughing, clapping and having a good time with the chef. Yes the chef was entertaining, but entertainment does not fit the bill when you are paying $30-$35 for a meal plus beverages. I guess, until I see better reviews, I will not be returning. Our party of 14 guests arrived promptly at 7 pm for our reservation to the downtown Milwaukee Benhiana. We were ushered to the bar immediately in an obvious attempt to force drinks on us before our meal. There is really not enough room for 14 people at their bar so we awkwardly waited around for 20 minutes before our table was ready. Whoever the hostess was that evening appeared to by in some sort of physical or mental anguish, or at least her face displayed such feelings. Truly a woman with a foul disposition. She insisted that a 15 minute wait was standard at Benihana and gave no explanation for our wait for the table. When I make a reservation at 7 pm I want to be seated by 7:05 pm. Seriously. The meal was typical for any Benihana restaurant with the same meat, rice and veggies with sauces. Probably a "B" grade meal. The drinks were good, but along with the meal were highly overpriced. This location certainly doesn't warrant such high prices with out of date furnishings and average service from the staff. Although hibachi style grills seem like fun, the entertainment value decreases after your first visit. For this price you could go to any steakhouse in downtown Milwaukee and have a much better experience. read more

If you want to visit during the pandemic, read this, and think again. I placed an pick-up order a few weeks ago, the food was ready on time. HOWEVER, I was completely shocked when I arrived the restaurant....none of the people including stuffs were properly wearing the mask, yes, they had a mask on but not fully covered the month or noise, and when they were talking, they pulled off the mask. Here's the fun part, after my food was picked up and completed the transaction, 12 hours later, they charged me on my card for 20% more on the item that was showing as free item when I made the payment. Just like other reviews, they will charge you whatever and whenever they can. Think again, smart people. read more
