But I just didn't get to truly sit down and try it until 2 of my friends who used to live in San Antonio, but were visiting from out of town, decided to come here for dinner :) ! We all ordered the beef broth pho and fried rolls :) ! The beef in the pho was tender and the broth was so hot and rich :) ! Although delicious pho and rolls are absolutely perfect during the rainy and wet season, they are great meal options during any time of the year ;) ! We also received great warm tapioca dessert at the conclusion of dinner :) ! The employees were very friendly and courteous and super prompt with our orders :) ! Perhaps it helped that we didn't come in at the peak times on a Saturday and could be served right away. It's very casual and absolutely perfect for both small and large groups of friends or family members :) ! But they also have smaller tables for solo eaters who might just want to enjoy a great meal on their own time, or for twosomes who don't need a large space :) ! We would certainly come back :D ! I'll share photos of why I was not pleased with this experience. First off, I don't like giving small local businesses a bad name, but I'm writing this review in the hopes of pushing the establishment towards improvement. Our visit was about an hour to an hour & a half before closing time. Service: It seemed like there were only two people operating at the time of our visit. One person was taking orders, working the register and bussing the tables. Then, another person came out from the kitchen to help clean out right before closing. I believe that it is for this reason some of our orders came out incomplete including a Spring Roll to-go order without the peanut sauce. This place should have two working the entire floor at all times to provide sufficient service. Food: I go to Pho restaurants often and the servings at Berni--well, you get less than what you pay for. The broth of my soup noticeably topped off a lot lower than usual. The amount of meat and noodles was not near generous either. You can also see the contents of the Spring Roll after a bite (photo). The taste is typical Vietnamese as it should. No complaints on that. Cleanliness: I noticed the outer side of one bowl was still dirty (photo). Dear Berni, Your food is not bad but I think there are changes that need to be made. I have been on a hunt for several years to find the best yellow curry in SA and I think this might be it. The curry comes out piping hot and is full of flavor. Loads of veggies and meat make it a well-rounded dish. It was so delicious, I really wanted to eat the whole thing, but the portion was huge. My favorite part about going to Berni is the tapioca at the end. It's such a nice little treat to end your meal with. I will be taking friends here! read more

The service tips the scale here. Our server met us at the entrance, with casual, find your own seating. He was warm and patient, explaining the menu with clarity. He brought us complimentary pudding that made the meal complete. The egg rolls are flavorful. My pork vermicelli was very packed with chargrilled goodness and was past delicious. My son and I wanted pho again. We made a plan for yesterday, but changed it up at the last minute. Our usual place has been closed a lot recently, so we had a Plan B. Then we decided to go with Plan B from the start to try a new place. I really liked this place. It was bright, clean, and spaciously comfortable. It had plenty of parking, and the menu had everything I wanted. We had come for pho, so that's what we ordered. We started off with an order of grilled pork soft spring rolls with fish sauce. They were rolled nice and tight and had delicious smoky grilled pork stuffed throughout the whole roll. There were less noodles in them than I have had at other places, which really let the flavors of the other ingredients come through. I really liked that our server split the order up and gave us our own plates and dipping sauce. I would go back to Berni Pho just to eat those rolls! Both of us had a large bowl of the Berni Pho. That is the one that has rare steak, brisket, tripe, tendon, meat balls. We usually order the one with the most variety meats wherever we go. We both tasted the broth the second it hit the table. It was absolutely delicious. I could tell that it was a bone broth that had simmered for hours. I added Sriracha and Hoisin Sauce like I usually do. Then I noticed that our server had given us each our own plate of beansprouts, jalapeno slices, cilantro, and lime wedges. I dumped it all in and squeezed the lime on top. Then I mixed it up well. The next five minutes were a heavenly experience. This was one of the best bowls of pho I have ever eaten. I thought I would miss the Thai Basil leaves, but I was wrong. Cilantro kicked it up a notch. I got to the end of my bowl and poured the last spoonful of broth directly on the spoon to savor. My pho bowl is always bone dry when I'm finished. Then I use a paper towel (which I bring from home) to wipe my face, sit back, and enjoy that wave of warm fullness that almost always comes over me after eating pho. Then the server surprised us with a small bowl of "soup". It was lavender-colored and packed with tapioca pearls. I assumed it would be chilled, but I was wrong. It was piping hot and soothing. I really hate to say this, since I am very fond of my usual pho venue, but I'm pretty sure that my son and I will be bumping Berni Vietnamese Restaurant up to A Plan status in the future. read more

My kids are 8 and 13 and have never been to a Vietnamese restaurant. Berni was great for them! They both got the kids meatball pho and they loved it. I had a pork banh mi and it was really tasty. The pork had some burnt tips on it, which made it deliciously crunchy. The restaurant needs a little TLC or updating. I was a little bummed that I couldn't have a Saigon or Tiger beer with my sandwich. The waiter, maybe the owner?, made suggestions about what we should get and was helpful and very attentive. read more

I was so excited to eat here. We drove 40 minutes to get there, read reviews online, and looked at photographs of different dishes before going. First, the prices were much higher than reflected on yelp. The Bahn Mi that I thought would be $8.95 was actually $15.95. Next, it was supposed to come with Vietnamese Cole slaw (made with cabbage) and instead it came with a pile of lettuce. Table settings and sauce jars look like they haven't been wiped down in weeks or months. Visibly sticky and a layer of grime. Food was amazing! We had the phos and the chicken and tofu curry. Hubby said the pho was the best he's ever had... even better than the ones in Houston where we are from! Curry was super hot (even after feeding the kids their food before eating mine) but so delicious. Service wasn't terrible but could be better. We only had to ask for bowls and scissors (that were super old and dull) but other than that, we didn't need anything else. The noodles and chicken had fantastic flavor. The chicken and broccoli were cooked perfectly. I did struggle eating the noodles with chop sticks or even a fork as they were so slippery. I ended up having to use a spoon. It likely didn't help that the noodles seemed to be cut short. I heard nothing but good things about the flavor of the food. My coworkers finally got me to go with them. I was, unfortunately, not impressed. My food was overcooked and they had a problem that most definitely needs to be addressed immediately. I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt. Personally, I don't see how they were given an A/100 rating, but they were busy and everyone seemed to be enjoying their food. I will revisit in a couple of months. I was traveling through San Antonio yesterday and happened upon this Vietnamese restaurant. There was only one man working the restaurant, but there were quite a few customers. I worried that I wouldn't be able to get good service because there was only the one man. However, I was greeted quickly and received my food promptly, steaming hot and delicious. I never had a want for anything. This man seemed to handle the entire restaurant all by himself, and everyone around me seemed very happy and content. The food was very delicious. I even got a little dessert, which I have no idea what it was. It was fairly decent. It was a blessed surprise, as he didn't even charge me for it. They have a rather large menu so I would've been a bit overwhelmed, had I not gone in there specifically for pho. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. read more

In all of my years of patronizing Vietnamese places, I've never come across one called Berni. (#1) I've learned this was one of the most popular spots in the city and clearly one of the most reviewed in its category. It was only a matter of time before I showed up. I had come here probably at least a dozen times throughout the summer only to find they were closed each time. It was confusing since there was no signage and the hours online / on the storefront were inconsistent. However, that problem has since corrected itself, as Berni has reopened for the weekdays. I recently came to try their lunch and came away with the following takeaways: * It's expensive. I realize that people gotta eat (#2) but I haven't seen too many Viet spots in San Antonio that charge as much as Berni. We're talking sub $10 banh mis, $12 egg rolls, $15 noodle dishes, and pho that ranges from $9-16. * Portions seems substantial, which I assume comes with the price and likely because of the customer base. While the mega-normus bowls of pho are a nice touch, the half full Vietnamese coffees in their giant containers are misleading. * The food is not catered to Vietnamese / Asian palates. The owner warned me of ordering pho ga, noting that they used "American chicken" vs the standard Viet style. It was like Costco rotisserie chicken and not particularly great. * What's up with all the Non-Viet options? Kimchi jiggae, bulgolgi, pad thai and katsu just seem a tad out of place. See previous bullet point. * They are short staffed like crazy. It's just one guy manning the room and one chef in the kitchen. As a result, it's not uncommon to see dirty tables with plates, napkins. Additional staffing is necessary. * Due to the supposed "shortage" they can only serve bottled water at .50 cents a pop. For a restaurant that looks this nice, it admittedly feels a bit strange. * The pho is solid but not remarkable. The broth is on the clearer side and not overly aromatic. It feels way noodle heavy compared to the meats, especially in their signature Berni bowl. For our pho ga loving friends, please consider ordering something else. * Lastly, the complimentary ché is a really nice touch. The taste is exceptional. Had the lemon grass beef salad and loved it. In general the food taste remarkably good. The restaurant is filthy. I don't think the restaurant seating area caddy trays, windows, floors have ever been cleaned. Amazing that the kitchen gets a score of 99 but the actual seating area is so filthy. Just don't look to hard. The man who greets and seats has as much personality as one of the table tops but the lady doing the cooking is sweet and charming. So would I recommend, yes. I would strongly recommend the food. At least, the dish I had. But, if you're looking for ambiance or cleanliness you're not going to find it here. I give it 4 stars for food taste alone read more

pretty decent vietnamese spot in san antonio. plenty of seating and the place is quite clean. the service here is really good! the owner seems friendly and all of our food came at a timely manner. you also get a soup and a dessert as part of your meal. as for the food, i've had way better viet food elsewhere but pretty good for san antonio. we got the berni pho, the lemongrass pork vermicelli, and the bun rieu. the pho is pretty good, the broth is pretty light which i really enjoyed. also appreciate how they offer like 4 different bowl sizes. the lemongrass pork vermicelli was quite tasty altogether but the pork itself is a bit too salty for me. this was also my first time trying bun rieu so not exactly sure what i was looking for but the broth tasted very much like blue crab and tomato. i think the flavor was quite strong for my taste. read more

Posted hours stated open Monday after 5PM. Waited 20 min after 5PM in the heat and decided to go somewhere else.

WARNING: They do not serve free water! You either bring your own or you pay 50cents for a water bottle. $1 for a soda can. Also.. They did not have the air running, just had the front door open. So the place was really stuffy. It gets worse when you're eating hot soup and sweating.. I got #21 which was a Vermicelli dish. my gosh was it salty. Visually it looked really good but jeez I couldn't finish it because it was so so salty. The noodles they used for vermicelli was NOT vermicelli noodles..it was more like spaghetti thickness. The service isn't bad. They gave a complimentary soup in the beginning. It was just a vegetable soup. Then a complimentary dessert at the end (Which i did not try bc it did not look appetizing) I'm not sure why this place got lots of good reviews.
