A wise man once tried explaining to me that Big Bar is in Alcove and something about the ordering, I didn't quite understand what he meant but tonight I was here to finally check this place out myself. They do however hold separate addresses otherwise they can easily be considered one place. We came to Alcove for a little dessert after dinner, ordered and then walked into Big Bar to snag one of the two, possibly three tables they have beside the bar. This space is really intimate and wonderful. We had a few Cabs, a Malbec and a Tempernillo - all ok selections. Bartenders were nice. I really enjoyed the space, sure it's not quiet but it's buzzing, slightly loud and lively in the best way - the way where no one seems to wear on my nerves and there's just a calm in the place where everyone is relaxed and enjoying themselves. Service was great. This is a solid casual date spot, grab something to eat, drink and relax place. We'll definitely be back! read more

The cocktail list is loaded with inventive and delightful drinks, and the bartenders know how to make them just right. You'll always find an interesting special concoction on their chalkboard, and each beverage is presented in picturesque fashion, with crystalline ice, and garnishes that range from spring flowers to origami paper (complete with crane-folding instructions). Let's get one thing straight: Big Bar is not Alcove. Alcove is not Big Bar. If you're here to order Alcove food, go talk to the Alcove seating host and have fun waiting an hour for a scone. But if you're looking to sidle up to the bar and savor an expert craft cocktail, you're in the right place. The place is tiny, seating is limited, and there's only so much staff to go around, so be prepared for some slow-down when things get busy. And I feel like there's almost always a wait for the single-occupancy bathrooms. However, there is some outside seating on the side of the building, and most importantly: happy hour is from 2pm-7pm. So I read this LA Weekly article about the 5 best pina coladas in Los Angeles, and this place was on the list. My girlfriend and I decided to check it out as we both love pina coladas. We walk in and are immediately digging the atmosphere. It like a coffee shop fused with a bar--total hipster place, but it was so unique we didn't care. The building is split in half. On the left side is the bar. It's a little darker and feels like how a craft bar should. Then right through a doorway is the coffee shop, which sells food, baked goods, coffee, and tea. It's a little brighter and has the chalkboard menu and everything. Out front there's a big patio--maybe 20 tables. It's great if you're with some people who are under 21 because you can bring out your drinks from the bar while they enjoy coffee or food from the coffee shop. The best part is both the coffee shop and the bar are open until 1am, so it's great for a late night snack. One minor hiccup. I ordered the pina colada at the bar and the bartender informed me that they no longer serve that drink. She said that they have seasonal drinks since they get all their ingredients fresh. I understand, as it's not their fault that LA Weekly failed to inform me of this. Nonetheless, I looked at the menu and saw that they make a craft gin fizz. I've always wanted to try one, but I hadn't found a place that can make it since they never have eggs. So I ordered the drink--about $12, but not bad considering it's a decent size with no ice--and it was amazing! Maybe one of the 3 best cocktails I've ever had. My girlfriend doesn't like most alcohol, but loved this drink. She drank almost half of it. She ordered the mint tea, which was about $3, but huge! And again, it tasted amazing. I'd never been a tea fan, but this mint tea was addicting! The food was good, but a little pricey. We had the angus beef sliders--which came with 3 sliders, however costing us a whopping $13! The bowl of fries that our friends ordered was pretty big, but cost them $8. Apparently they have a happy hour where these items are half off between 2pm and 7pm during the week. Parking was easy, and it was a Saturday. We parked literally right across the street for free. My recommendation: As far as the drinks go, this place is a winner, since we only dropped $16 between the two of us (gin fizz and mint tea), but the food is where it gets a little pricey. You could go somewhere else for that. However, you're getting it all in one place and the atmosphere is unbeatable, so you're probably paying for that as well. I love love this place! It's in the same building as Alcove and has the same outdoor seating, which is convenient if you want to grab food next door (although Big Bar also has delicious food!). When I went they had Game of Thrones drinks in honor of the last season. They were all delicious and aesthetically pleasing. We also got guacamole, bacon wrapped dates with goat cheese, and salads, which were all tasty. The outdoor seating is really cute and relaxing. It ended up being a great place to spend a few hours catching up with friends. Parking is street and can be more difficult depending on the time of the day. read more

I came here for a birthday celebration on St. Patty's day and loved everything about Big Bar. The staff was super welcoming and friendly, the ambiance is great, and the food and drinks are fantastic! The staff was really accommodating. We kept adding people to our group and they repeatedly came over with extra chairs and made sure we were all comfortable. Big Bar has a cafe feel to it but it's a spacious restaurant and includes a full bar inside. You're surrounded by lots of greenery and lights, which add a lot to the relaxing atmosphere. We ordered a large Cheese Tower for the table. It was soooo great. It includes an assortment of cheese, fresh fruit, crackers, bread and some candied walnuts and dried fruit. All delicious. We were pleasantly surprised by how much food it was and it makes for a perfect appetizer for a large group. We also ordered a round of the Old No. 38 for the table. My bestie and I have been meaning to check out the bar at Alcove Cafe, but never got around to it till this past Saturday night. We decided to continue her bday celebration at Big Bar since it's was close to the restaurant we were eating at. Street parking is hard to find around that area, so we opted to valet park for $5. The bar wasn't very crowded so we managed to find seats right away. "Most Interesting Cocktail in the World" - mezcal vida, lime, cinnamon, chocolate-chili bitters ($12) - pretty good in my opinion. it was definitely interesting, but in a pleasant way. you could taste the tartness from the lime, and the chocolate-chili bitters leaves some heat on your lips. the cinnamon sprinkle on top adds a nice touch. "St. Anne's Helper" - eagle rare 10yr, carpano antica, amaro meletti, forbidden bitters - not bad, but I'm not a big whiskey drinker. Tiramisu - DELICIOUS! We shared a generous slice of tiramisu to conclude the bday celebration and boy was it yummy! We both have a big sweet tooth for tiramisu and this one topped the chart. It was more mousse like than it was cakey. The ladyfingers were placed on the outside of the cake rather than in the inside soaked with rum or coffee. There was just a thin layer of soaked cake and the rest was filled with mousse. It was lighter. I will for sure get this again... I wish Alcove Cafe and Big Bar were closer to home. They serve Evan Williams for well whiskey, I've had worse. I had an old fashioned with bourbon, then one with rye. Both were served exactly the way I like: bitters, sugar, a big ice cube and an orange peel. I also had an Irish coffee. The bartender whipped some heavy cream by shaking the cream in a cold cocktail shaker, then layering it over my Jameson and coffee. It was pretty much perfect. read more

Matt B. and I used to live at Rodney and Franklin. We moved in March, and though we're still a short walk away from Big Bar, we've been coming a lot less frequently. (Little Dom's is cheaper and so close it might as well be in our house.) I miss it, and when I went back a couple weeks ago and found the menu entirely changed, I was a little bit sad. Then I was happy - I had new drinks to try, and they were all great. My favorite on the current menu is the Canelita Nueva. If you like tequila, this is a fantastic sipper with Partida Reposado, Becherovka herbal liqueur, and grapefruit, served on a big block of ice. It's a strong drink, but it's as smooth as can be. The grapefruit does a great job balancing the tequila. I've never had Becherovka elsewhere, but I'm curious how it fares in other cocktails. The Majestic Pelican is another keeper, and not just for the memorable name. The Pelican mixes mezcal with pineapple, lime, Green Chartreuse, and Falernum. I'm a sucker for smokey and sweet mezcal cocktails, and this one is very well made. If tequila and mezcal are not your poisons, you might try ...And Everything Nice (ellipses included). This uses Martin Miller's gin and Apple Jack, along with lemon, honey, and an allspice dram. If you feel strongly about pumpkin pie as an autumn and winter only dessert, this might throw you off in the summer. It has that comforting spice that is most often associated with the cooler months. It's also just a good cocktail, though, so why not give it a shot? The last one I've tried on this new menu is the Thorn in My Side, ordered off the chalkboard. It's the weakest of the bunch, but not bad at all. It's a tall refreshing drink of Overholt rye, vermouth, ginger, lime, and cider. The foremost flavor is ginger, and it would be a nice drink to enjoy on Big Bar's patio some warm night. Now that summer is here, I should start coming back to Big Bar more often. It's really a great bar, never too crowded, with a casual atmosphere. The drinks are not the best in their price range, but they are fantastic for the lack of hassle. The layout of Alcove and Big Bar confused the shit out of my friend. Aside from this, I thoroughly enjoy the joint venture that allows you to go from enjoying a cafe salad in one room and crossing over into BB for a happy hour Moscow Mule. Actually, you can order from Alcove's menu if you're sitting at Big Bar, and in fact, you are supposed to order from the bartender. Otherwise, it gets even more confusing. Anyway, the Happy Hour offerings at Big Bar are extremely limited, but the portions are quite hearty, and the quality of food is ace. The hummus platter includes a huge, seemingly never ending bowl with warm pita and a hefty array of crudite (carrots, celery, and broccoli). The sirloin steak burger sliders are very good. They manage to pack a lot of flavor in a little package (avocado and bacon, no less). A couple next to us got the fries, and they looked scrumptious; I was pretty tempted to ask for one. The drink list is short, but again, does not pass up on the caliber of alcohol. A smidge pricier than your average HH ($8 cocktails versus $5 or 6), but still worthwhile. The ambiance is relaxing and lovely, and the weather last night made it easy to linger about for a couple of hours. Despite getting a $58 parking ticket (even after being mindful to go and fill my meter twice), my experience was still nice. Hmm why haven't I written a review about Big Bar yet?! I've been coming here for a while, and the past few months I have been coming here almost every week! I love Big Bar!!!! They really pay attention to detail in garnishing their drinks, which I love! They get most of their cocktail accessories from a cute shop in the city, and I'm completely blanking on the name of it, but something like the Bar Keep or something something! Their bloody marys are great here, a bit on the simple side but great nonetheless, but my main drink is their Moscow Mule, which they add ginger pieces on the sides of the glass which is great. One of the mixologists reccomended I try a dash of crushed up jalapeno peoppers mixed in mine to not only give it an extra kick but to give it some extra spice, which I am grateful for trying it with. This is a great place to go by yourself, or with friends and to converse with the tenders and other patrons! read more

Regardless of whether the irony is intentional, if Alcove's blinking, sheep-like horde is too much for you (like it is for me), then Big Bar is your spot. It's Alcove without the line and with booze. Despite its diminutive size, Big Bar delivers big on flavor and alcoholic punch. Man, oh man, a couple of drinks from here will have you on your ass. Which is not a bad thing, just pace yourself. Not only are the cocktails on the menu good, but the bartenders (at least the ones I know) are skilled enough to make you something on the spot based on your taste. Like brown liquor? Just tell 'em. Don't like things too sweet? Just say the words. Chances are you'll like what they put in front of you. And even if you don't, just drink it anyway; the thing costs $14 and shouldn't go to waste! Yes the drinks are good, yes the food is decent, but the thing I like most about Big Bar (more than the irony) is the sense of rollicking contradiction that pervades the place. To wit: the decor is pure Gatsby, but the music is straight up '80s dance. Your classic cocktail will come served with an appropriately large ice cube, yet the bartender who made it will give you a healthy dose of playful sass along with it. Clearly, this place doesn't take itself too seriously and I love that. If you want to maximize your time at Big Bar, make note of its size and plan accordingly. I was very excited to go to Big Bar, but for my friend and myself, Big Bar was more or less a Big Bust. We were able to get a table in the bar, which was great, but the waitress felt a little overworked and as a result, we felt a little under served. I'm all for leaving me alone while I'm enjoying my meal/drinks, but we definitely could have used a bit more service, like when we asked our waitress for more water, but finally had to ask a runner if they could please get us some. To be fair- my friend said he did not mind the wait service at all. I got the the Lily- a tequila based drink which was a nice refreshing lemonadey-type drink, which I would actually get again on a hot summer day, and my friend got the apple jack old fashion which he was not impressed with. We then got the vie rose and the earl grey vodka tea drink. I did not like the vie rose- to me, it tasted like a baby aspirin crushed up in seltzer water, but the earl grey infused vodka drink was a nice sipping drink. We ordered the angus sliders, the artichoke hearts and the bacon wrapped dates. We saw the runners walking around aimlessly with our food and finally had to flag them down to tell them we were the ones who had ordered it. The angus sliders were a little on the cool side (perhaps from the runner looking for us?) and were tasty, but not amazing. The artichoke hearts were also flavorful but they felt a little over breaded. I normally love bacon wrapped dates, but just didn't feel like these popped. My friend also felt like they could have reduced the portion size of the dates and artichokes to increase quality. The decor is lovely and I wanted to like the place more. I came here expecting Alcove food but got Big Bar food. I left satisfied, but it was a confusing experience. You can still get Alcove pastries, which that and the ambiance are the only reasons I love Alcove, anyway. So it wasn't a complete loss, but the food wasn't extraordinary, either. If you're already here, you need to try the bacon wrapped dates. I don't like bacon, and I've never had bacon wrapped dates, but now I find myself searching for this dish everywhere I go. It's seriously a problem. Other than that, Big Bar is just average with great ambiance. They have white Christmas lights along their patio seating area at night which makes it rather romantic. This one of our favorite places in Los Angeles. Big Bar is one of only two places on the Eastside for craft-cocktails without going into downtown - the other is 1886. Unlike the formality of, say 1886, Big Bar is a casual place with a light, clean, bright atmosphere. Don't get me wrong, I love dark, serious, speak-easy style craft cocktail bars - I love Varnish, 1886, Seven Grand, Cana, Roger Room - but it's really nice to have a place that is more low profile for an easy evening out. I find it at lot easier to convince the wife to join me for an easy night at Alcove, versus trudging downtown, dealing with parking, and then sitting in a dark cave all night. The indoor-outdoor feel of the bar area is wonderful, and the white marble bar is particularly air-y, especially given the dark, closed spaces where one usually finds craft cocktails. The food items that were added to the regular alcove menu when Big Bar open are perfect for enjoying with cocktails. The angus and albacore sliders are particularly good, and the basket of fries (with housemade jalapeno catchup and bacon-blue cheese sauce) are perfect for sopping up a couple quality cocktails. The cocktails are top notch, as is the bar staff. Juan, Dan, Matt and Rosie all make quality cocktails. The menu changes seasonally, and is generally a well balanced variety of styles and strengths. On the lighter end the Carpano Americano (Campari, Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth, and Soda) is the perfect crisp-and-refreshing summer starter. There are several swizzles and sours, and several stirred. It's a waste to order a vodka tonic here, but if you do, you'll be greeted with a minimum of attitude.
