So absolutely delightful! My best friend and I were celebrating 20 years of friendship and we needed a place to dine. I researched some of the top rated restaurants in the area and this one came up. I read through the reviews and we decided to give it a shot. When we called, the did mention the kitchen would be closing soon so we were a bit nervous the service and quality would not be the highest if they were rushing to end the night. Quite the opposite! When we got there we were taken care of by one of the owners himself, Miguel. Super friendly and charming, Miguel made sure we had a fantastic time. From guiding us with the wine, to showing us his many paintings inside the restaurant (we sat outdoors), to even singing a song he free-styled for us on his guitar, to giving us a complimentary dessert and aperitifs; we couldn't feel more special. And we weren't the only ones getting amazing treatment. He seemed to know all his customers so well and glided through the room entertaining and making sure everyone was having a great time. Now for the food! The food was truly exquisite. We ordered the grilled octopus as an appetizer. It was flavorful and a generous size. My bestie ordered the ravioli tartuffati - OH MY! bursts of flavor and aroma, it was perfect! I ordered the seafood risotto and every bite had seafood and glorious cheese. Completely unexpected. We had toured Kykuit and decided to look for a place to grab a bite before we hit the road. Bistro 12 had a decent menu outside, so we have it a try. Whoa. The food was truly OUTSTANDING. Started with an arugula salad: had pears and apple slices, razor thin that offset the tangy light dressing. Yum. Crusty bread, toasted and served hot came next. I am a sucker for food bread--and it WAS good. For the entree, I had the Penne alla Vodka w/peas and ham, my wife had a Risotto Seafood special. We savored every bite. Like other reviewers I hesitate to leave a review, lest too many others discover this gem. I would typically overlook a place like this because when I go out I tend to favor Thai and Indian which i am not able to cook myself very easily or well. My mistake because this place was out of this world. I came for my mom's birthday dinner. My parents had been there once or twice before and the owners remembered them. Shared a pitcher of red sangria which was great, not too sweet. We all started with different apps, I had the burrata with black truffles and tomato. My husband had the fried calimari and my parents had salads. Everything was delicious. They were generous with the burrata. The fried calimari had a lightness to it despite being deep fried. For entrees we tried two different veal dishes (one with artichokes and lemon, one with mushrooms) as well as the seafood risotto and truffle ravioli. Again, everything was perfect. The veal was very tender. Portions were generous and my husband I both took home some leftovers. We were treated to a complimentary dessert (flan) and song from the owners for my mom's birthday. A few of us thought we didn't like flan but we were wrong. Bistro 12's was very silky and not egg-y tasting at all. We also got some of the dessert wine which was very nice. A little sweet, a little strong. Reminded me a little of port even though if I recall it was a type of moscato. Bistro 12 and it's proprietor Miguel have figured out how blend the best of old Portuguese cuisine with the modern palate for a unique dinning experience in the heart of Tarrytown's restaurant row. This white table cloth eatery boasts a diverse menu designed to meet the picky palates of the Grossers, Beitlers and Adlers. Well you know the drill, wine and an assortment of small plate appetizers for the table begins the feast. We tried and loved the following: Eggplant Rollatini, Burrata and a delicate Sardine platter. The entrees selected Salted Cod scrambled with eggs sautéed onions and potatoes, Striped Bass livornese done with wine, light tomatoes and capers, and Cod Cakes. Desert topped off the evening with a Portuguese Flan, Lemon Tart & Tartufo Before our fabulous evening came to an end at Bistro 12, Miguel came to the table with his Luhua to play a short section of tunes. Wonderful European bistro right across from the music hall. I dined solo on my way home from work and had the braised rabbit with white wine and mushroom sauce, served with creamy (and cheesy) polenta. Starting with the bread, it's sooo good, but don't fall into the trap we did where we filled up with bread. Because after the delicious appetizers, comes the best part: main course. I had the ravioli tarfuti with the butternut squash sopu and they were to die for. Although I will have to say the martinis are not on par with the food, so I would suggest sticking to beer or wine. I came here for lunch with my coworkers on my Birthday. It was quiet for lunch on a Thursday, which made me skeptical, but once we received the food I was reassured we made a good decision. I had the octopus and the burrata as appetizers, and the ravioli dish as an entree. Each appetizer was good. The octopus had such a delicate light flavor and the burrata was perfectly seasoned and complimented well with a large tomato slice. The ravioli was a refreshing large dish. I had about six large raviolis (I am used to being served only four)! The desserts we ordered were quite good as well. What was truly exemplary about this place was the service. The man serving us was quick to chat with us and wish me a happy birthday, also surprising us with a dessert wine to help us celebrate. Although I do wish that this was updated to say it was Italian food and not Mediterranean. Small beans though, no big deal. We each had an appetizer and an entree. My boyfriend had a clams appetizer and was thoroughly pleased with his dish. For dinner I ordered the chicken paillard and it was delicious. The chicken was cooked extremely well, very flavorful and juicy, and the onions were slices paper thin. It was divine. My boyfriend had the penne a la vokda and it was your standard pasta fare for an Italian joint. Again nothing special. Excellent! It's hard to believe that this little place has only been open for a few months. Upon entering you are immediately greeted by the partners who own this place. The dining area is clean, well laid out and tables are nicely spaced. Service was top notch. It was a bit odd to me that we were not immediately greeted with menus for food. We were sat and given drinks and a wine menu. After ordering wine we received our menus along with the specials for the day. Not really standard, but this definitely set the pace for the meal. Never were we rushed, yet we were never waiting for food to hit the table. The food was excellent from beginning to end. Calamari was just the way I like it, perfectly fried, and cut into small "O" shapes (instead of the weird chewy tentacle looking pieces). The filet mignon was definitely one of the top 5 steaks I've ever had. Perfectly cooked, great sauce... they could not have prepared this better. For dessert we received tiramisu which was complements of the house. It was pretty good but definitely not the best I've had... however, I was so full by the time they brought this that I didn't eat very much. Overall, I was really impressed with this place. Fabulous Food. Quant little place, nice setting, nice folks, good menu. I ordered the red snapper and I was blown away. The fish was tender and delicious, served on a plate with a sautéed vegetables that were perfectly prepared. I started off with the beet salad. This place used to be Solmar, but now they are new owners and also operate Pulpo in Greenwich. We came for lunch on a Saturday - hardly anyone in the restaurant, but I think people are missing out. How was Bistro 12's FSA (Food, Service, Atmosphere) Food: I ordered rabbit. I thought it was very delicious (only problem I have with rabbit are the bones), but it also came with polenta and veggies which were both very good as well. Everyone else at the table really enjoyed their meals as well. For dessert I had a lemon tart which was really good as well, just the right size. The bonus (and perhaps they cheated their way to the 4th star) was they gave us an extra 2 desserts of cheesecake & tiramisu). That was a very nice gesture. Service: I thought the service was low key and timely. They forgot an espresso, but made up with it with the aforementioned free desserts.
