What a great surprise. The Black Bear Diner serves a steak and eggs breakfast that is not only tasty by economical. The steak was 1/2-inch thick and 4.5-inches long, being broiled with the right amount of salt and pepper for a truly beefy flavor. The two eggs were fried over medium (a task many diners cannot do right. The meal also included fried potatoes in cheese sauce (a delicious alternative to hashbrowns). And there were four half slices of ryebread toast (great with blackberry jam). Server Pamela was excellent in getting the meals to the table and topping off my coffee and my brother's sweet tea.The restaurant decor was redolant with bear statues and photos, and the musak went from late 1960s rock to Elton John's "Crocodile Rock" and Cass Elliott's "Dream and Litle Dream." My only quibble was the low lighting in the dining area that made it hard to read the newspaper-style menu. I'll be back! read more

Absolutely horrible food, the entire restaurant smells like mold and mildew. My food was over cooked and the chicken breast was more like a thigh. The water on the outside of our drinking glasses smelled like mold or mildew. Even the manager said it smelled bad. We have often eaten here for over 20 years and I've loved the food but something happened in the restaurant gone way downhill. and my waitress was nonexistent. We had to get up and go find the manager ourselves. She never even checked back to see if there was anything that we needed or how the food was. read more

First off, our server, Caitlin was excellent. We were seated promptly and it was fairly quiet. Clean restrooms and fast service. I eat vegetarian/vegan when I can and I was happy to read you could sub a veggie burger for the beef in any of their style burgers and it was delicious. I should have left a 4/5 BUT... They did good in other areas, I'll explain. My cousin and I walked in and we were greeted within 20-30 seconds so that was nice. We were immediately seated in a booth towards the back. It was perfect. The restaurant was not too loud and not too quiet, it was just right; nice and intimate. Our server came to greet us and take our drink order, and we were ready to order our meal. Another 3 to 5 minutes later, she came back with our soup and salad. Another 10 to 12 after that our food came. My cousin ordered the chicken fried steak with gravy and mashed potatoes, he would rate it a 4/5 and his complaint was that everything had bacon in it... The beans, gravy, his soup... He felt it was a bit much. I ordered the Rueben, I got that as the safe option because typically diners are really good at those and I feel you can't mess up a Rueben sandwich. To be honest, it was not my favorite. The meat was kinda dry and they were a bit skimpy on the 1000 island sauce... and sauerkraut (said no one ever lol) but I really felt that way. And the fries were kind of grungy and not very crispy... but I do atleast really wanna shout out to our server Destiny, and the other server in the area, Ms. Tammy. When we arrived, they said it would be about a 30 min wait, but our table was ready in 5 min, so that was a pleasant surprise. It seems like they're very busy on the weekends, as service was a bit slow when we went for Sunday brunch/lunch. It took a while before we even were able to order water for the table after being seated. The portion sizes are huge, so you'll likely have leftovers for the next day. The food here doesn't seem to be the most healthy, but the menu is extensive, so you're bound to find some less unhealthy options, and you can easily substitute your sides. That being said, the food tasted good, like what you'd expect from a typical American diner, but I wouldn't say it's anything special. read more

Recently tried the country-fried steak breakfast platter which was recommended to me by friends. I wasn't disappointed! The steak was hot and delicious but the eggs and potatoes were barely warm. Tried this restaurant for the first time. I liked the place! I ordered the Rueben sandwich. Great rye bread loaded with a generous amount of corned beef. I ordered the chicken club vegetarian style and they graciously accommodated my special request. The onions rings were so good, my friend ordered an additional side. My friends shared fish and chips and said they were delish. My other friend was not so hungry so ordered a chili and baked potato. He said it was much better and the portion was greater. Our home is in North Carolina and there are no Black Bear Diners near us. We really enjoy it when we come to Arizona for the winter. Good service and great food. I love coming here for breakfast! It was a rainy morning and a delicious coffee hit the spot perfectly! We ordered the hungry bear combo that consisted of 2 scrambled eggs, pancakes and bacon. It was delicious. The bacon could have been a little bit crispier but it was good. The service was great too. We showed up at around 7:30 AM and we were seated right away. The restaurant was not really full so the waiter took really good care of us and kept going back to see if we needed something else. I've seen Black Bear pop up every so often driving by or on dining searches, but never really thought much or was enticed to try it until a craving hit. Biscuits & gravy criteria was the search that landed me on Black Bear. It didn't totally disappoint, it was a good try, just plenty of room for improvement. I didn't just want one thing. It was a breakfast for dinner craving. But, what was delivered ended up being so soaked in oil/grease it was nearly inedible & the entirety had 0 flavor, seasoning or substance to it. The eggs should have been over medium- they were VERY over easy & barely cooked, the whites totally drenched in oil & gummy. The sausage links were undercooked & almost raw, also pooling in grease. Obvious they were flash fried & did not fully cook. Country style hashbrowns are pretty hard to screw up but these were not good at all. There was 0 seasoning, they weren't pressed or strained potatoes, definitely not even fried: just a soggy heap of unseasoned & steamed potato shavings. Pooling in the grease from the other items. The biscuits & gravy was a generous portion of homemade biscuits (which was a refreshing surprise). But the problem is they are overcooked & dry. The gravy is fantastic with plentiful flavor & substance, but it needs nearly double a portion for the oversized & overbaked, dry biscuits. The good news: leftovers will last because the biscuits could use that overnight opportunity to soak some moisture! Toast seems to be included with just about any breakfast item. The wheat toast is good- it was probably the best part. Minus the fact 0 condiments were provided to accompany toast. I did get about 10 packets of single serve ketchup to enhance the hashbrowns. But overall, this is a meal I would have appreciated the appropriate inclusion of condiments to help fix what wasn't very good to begin with. Conclusion: a greasy mess of incomplete & underwhelming food. I thought the higher prices on the menu meant the quality would be a notch above your average gas station diner- this isn't the place to meet those expectations. Came for a meeting with the Lions Club Int group which meets the 2nd Monday of each month. Food slow to come out, was told for the extra 2.49 we would receive 2 extra tenders only for one, should have received fries, but received onion rings. Was given one set of SILVER ware for hubby and I to share, He used the fork to eat with, I used the knife. While this place has been here for a while and I passed regularly for a few years, I never really paid it much attention. Then I was traveling down in Tucson for a bowling tournament, and we opted to try it out and I was a fan. So, I had been wanting to try this location and I was not disappointed. I came in for a late lunch/early dinner. There were only a few diners when I stopped in. This is a medium-large sized restaurant. I was immediately greeted and seated. The server, Anna/Ana was quick to approach me and take my drink order and followed up to take my meal order. I stuck with the taco salad with ground beef. The service was quick, the meat was well seasoned and an ample amount of food overall. I tried their sauces and I really like the papa burn (habanero). I order catering for 50 of my employees here and my experience with black bear diner Gilbert and the manager Jeff has been SUPERB until my order today. The shift leader, Michelle (she should also refrain from lying and saying she's a manager) should NOT be in any customer facing role - she lacks empathy, customer service and interpersonal skills. She has made this a terrible experience. As someone who manages people, she should set a better example to the rest of the staff.
