Black Bear diner is what it is...an All American diner that serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. It's one of those staples in Milpitas like Mil's Diner. It has its longevity and is one of the typical go-to places after church on a Sunday to share a meal with family. The food is so-so. Nothing to write home about but not bad either. It's your typical diner food, much like Denny's. I've never had trouble finding seating here even when they are busy. It's one of those places that have a special place in my heart since it's been around so long and I've had many family gatherings here. Prices are acceptable. Parking lot on site.

NY steak & eggs with country potatoes and pancakes

First time coming back here after so long and I was very impressed with how big our portions of food was compared to the other location we dined at. Myself & two other coworkers decided to come here after getting off of work. Our server Juanita was patient, sweet, superb on taking our orders down. My coworker was mind blown when she automatically came back with another glass of water before asking. I was just surprised by the portion of the pancakes and was expecting just a normal sized pancake you see at other breakfast diners. I look forward coming back here to try other items on the menu.

Medium rare

The steak is on the leaner side, but not hard to chew. There is not much crust and has some black pepper. I think they achieved medium rare as I asked. Potatoes are cut a bit thick but I don't mind it. Eggs were cooked perfectly.

I kid you not, the lady that served my table is the sweetest lady ever! I came for the unlimited fish fry thinking I can eat several fish, however, I was proven wrong as I was only able to make it to round two. That was a lot more fish than I anticipated! Thank you!

I go to Black bear once every 10 years and it's still nice. I feel like I'm in Tahoe when I'm inside, which is the best! Relaxing nature vibes. Our wait staff Juanita today was very kind and attentive! We got our orders and food quickly and enjoyed a nice breakfast. I tried cinnamon roll French toast which was very fun. The center of the roll was still gooey, and it came with a little icing on top. Yum!

great service from Juanita welcoming, breakfast was great. My "cubs" finished the meals.

First of all--Good Morning! Next, I was so hungry and craving grits on my hour long commute to work that I thought about Black Bear. I came in and was instantly greeted, led to a table of my choosing and then immediately welcomed by Juanita, my service professional. I took some hot tea, which was served so fast--thank you Juanita! I then placed my desired order--GRITS, and also some biscuits with gravy, but let's be serious, I'm here for the grits. I wish I could teach folks how to properly make grits. I go for a new breakfast spot constantly in Milpitas area, just searching for yummy grits. #hardtofind Anyway, apart from my grits not meeting the expectations, Juanita did! I told her I was in a rush and she delivered. Fast service, fast food, fast check and such a sweetie. I'd come back just for her service. But not for the grits lol

This was my first time visiting this place. I think it's a solid option when you're craving diner food. The portions are large and well-seasoned. One of its best features is that it makes its own hot sauces. All three are flavorful and vary in spiciness. I didn't take many pictures because I was honestly focused on enjoying the food. It's worth noting that the maple syrup served with the pancakes is warm, adding an extra touch of flavor. The location is spacious and clean, although parking is limited. The staff members are very friendly.

I took my Mom here for lunch on our way to a family event. As we walked in, the manager (dark haired guy) I assumed, greeted us and asked how we were. I mentioned casually it was my Mom's birthday and he greeted her happy one. Our server was Sandra and she was super friendly. She told us to take our time looking at menu while she got our drinks. It's an extensive menu with lots to choose from. We placed our orders and Sandra was so detailed in answering questions and explaining choices with our meals. The restaurant has that cozy diner feel with bear decor everywhere. We went around St. Patrick's Day and they had a special menu. I ended going off that menu and had the Corned Beef and Cabbage. It also included Mashed Potatoes and Gravy and Veggies. It was really good, I enjoyed it and it was a good size portion. My Mom had a Patty Melt with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy as her side and she liked it. We were finished eating, waiting for our check when Sandra came with a bowl of Ice Cream with Whipped Cream and Sprinkles and a candle on top, and was singing Happy Birthday. What a nice surprise! Obviously the manager mentioned the birthday to her. She was so kind, really gave my Mom a heartfelt birthday greeting. Fantastic meal and kudos to the manager and Sandra for their amazing customer service.

Black Bear Diner Milpitas Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Black Bear Diner Milpitas

Do they veggie patties in burgers for vegetarians?

I hope that

In the DoorDash app, for pies, is it single slice or a whole pie? If it's only a single slice, is there any way to buy a whole pie?

They are mini pies. Enough for two people, but it is not a whole big pie.

Breakfast all day?

Yes all day. In fact the most recent promo is breakfast for dinner so that tells me definitely breakfast all day as a norm.

Do you guys deliver?

Delivery is an option at this location. We use a third party for delivery and this may affect your time for delivery based on the driver(s) availability.

Is their meatloaf any good?

Well, hello there! I may be biased... however, I will say "Yes, our meatloaf is good!" In fact, it was on my favorites list well before I started working for the company!

If I order the chocolate cream pie, is it a single slice or a whole pie?

It is an individual small pie but so good

Do you accept debit card?

Yes

Do you have fried rice?

I don't think so! Why waste your time when you can go to an actual Chinese spot and get it authentic!!!

No lines and no crowds on a rainy day morning with plenty of available parking spots in the huge lot. Nothing attractive on the outside in this old popular plaza. The place turned out great with the old fashioned retro red color style interior and the experience was wonderful. Good vibes and positive feelings when walking into it. My lady server provided excellent service and the Hispanic male worker was quick and efficient. Place is clean and menu had good variety of selections. Breakfast is served all day while lunch items start at 11am. My breakfast was very fulfilling and total was $25.30 with everything included. I paid in cash and tipped them $5. Loved my sweet lady server. There was another older woman at the cash register. She's a local as well. I really enjoyed the stop. I had the Fajitas Omelette breakfast and the steak meats in it were very generous. Delicious breakfast exactly as I had expected. My onions green peppers potatoes were perfect with a side of salsa. Sourdough toast was delicious with the garlic butter taste. I really came for my favorite hot chocolate with whipped cream in the morning. I do miss big American breakfasts, especially in these old fashioned and traditional retro spots. Love it. Why didn't I visit this place much earlier? Because they're always busy or full inside and the plaza parking is usually congested with heavy traffic here. Overall, I love the vibes and the service. It's one of those places where you can just have normal casual conversations with the staffs working inside if you are open to it. Beautiful diner. Yes, I will be revisiting in the future. If you love huge food portions, there's great value here. One plate can easily be shared between two people. Nice.

We moved to Milpitas about a year ago and my son started going to Mil's and is a current 'Regular'. They have good food. So after a while, my husband and I started going there and we too started going there pretty regularly for breakfast, at least once or twice a week. All in all, between the family we drop a few hundred a week. And we do tip well. Most of the wait staff knows us. Today, my husband had to stop on his way home to use the restroom. He doesn't look homeless or unkempt in anyway. When he asked, they told him he couldn't unless he's a 'paying customer'. This was to a newer employee he hadnt seen before. He proceeded to explain that we eat here regularly and she still said no. He asked to speak to the manager, who does know him. He too said no. I find it ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS that for a supposed family atmosphere restaurant, they couldn't extend a small courtesy. What exactly was it going to take away from them? As mentioned, we drop a good chunk of change there, and they didnt want to help out a patron that frequents the restaurant? Well, have no fear, we will NEVER darken your doorstep EVER again.

We were seated in their overflow area across from the main dining area. I enjoyed the Western Skillet, Country Potatoes and asked for their salsa too. My wife had their Clubhouse Sandwich with fries and our oldest son enjoyed the Chorizo Omelette, Hash Browns and a Pancake. As always the food was delicious and filling. I got a take-out container and so did my wife. The amount of food they serve is too much for the two of us to finish. However, our son had no problem finishing his meal. The service is always quick and the staff are friendly. We only waited about 5 minutes to be seated, which was awesome. The wait on Mother's Day was a bit longer, but they get to everyone as soon as they can. The decor is a bit dated, as is their furniture. However, we aren't worried about it. This time it was around noon, so my wife had the mini version of the Mexicano omelette, and I had the American burger with a grilled jalapeño on the side in addition to the french fries and avgolemono soup. My cup of soup came first and I enjoyed it. It was creamy and had chicken breast and rice in it along with a nice lemony tang. My wife enjoyed her omelette, even eating her hashbrowns, which I was surprised to see. Usually, she leaves them for me. She must've been hungry! The hamburger is a half pound of ground Angus beef before cooking and comes with lettuce and tomato and in my case cheddar cheese instead of American. That grilled jalapeño was an extra charge, but that was fine. It came on the side (as does a good dill pickle) and I took occasional bites from it to enjoy the heat On a Saturday as you might expect there was a bit of a weight but not more than 10 or 12 minutes I would say. We thought that was a thoughtful and considerate gesture. As for myself, I ordered a breakfast burrito with bacon, sausage, eggs, and cheese. It came with a side of salsa which added some freshness and helped balance the heaviness of all the meat and cheese. Overall, it was a good hefty burrito but just a little greasy. Kenny himself is another reason to visit. He's very friendly and chatty. He even took a selfie with us and displayed it on the monitor in the restaurant, which was a fun and personal touch that really made the experience memorable. The restaurant has a cozy, homey feel with rustic tables and chairs. It feels like you're visiting a neighborhood spot. The only downside is that the service is slow. Kenny is running the shop himself, and every burrito is made fresh to order. Sure your food is fresh and made with care, but it's definitely not the place to go if you're in a hurry. If you have time to spare, Kenny's is well worth the visit. The food is satisfying and Kenny's hospitality is what makes this spot unique.

It's almost like walking into a thrift shop that has random things going on from hundreds of photos of Kenny with customers, US flags, a table full of military business cards, Mercedes Benz trinkets, etc etc. Please be informed that Kenny is THE only person in here which means, he's the greeter, the cook, the cashier, and entertainer lol. The food can take long for a reason and there's no music or TV anywhere so it's quiet. The furniture is random as well; some from an office space, elementary school, and an all wooden table with chairs from someone's grandma's house. Me and my co workers ordered 2 burritos: Regular steak and eggs and a steak bulgogi. We waited maybe 15 mins for our which wasn't too long. The burritos had this soft white cheese melted on top which gave the tortilla this vanilla sweetness. I didn't really like that. The steak meat was sweet but didn't have that bulgogi marinade taste. Both of our burritos tasted like a plain egg, potato, and blank steak breakfast burrito. It was nothing special but the size is huge and one can be shared by two people. The burritos came with this sweet chipotle sauce with some sweet peppers in which it did add some flavor. Kenny is the man though! He's super nice and proud. He's very entertaining and enjoys talking to his guests. His son is in the army so it's one of the reasons why he's very patriotic. Is it a bit much?! Sure, but this cafe wouldn't be what it is without all of this randomness. It's a neighborhood gem and a historic landmark in this side of town. Kenny is well known to the area and is beloved. We enjoyed his company. Thank you so much Kenny!!
