This place was fabulous. The overall atmosphere, service and food quality was great. Samuel was our server and he was very attentive and patient. I went through a few cups of coffee for breakfast and he was always on top of it! Our food took no time at all despite how busy they were. The only minor hiccup was they forget to bring our toast, but Samuel took that off the bill with no problems and a great attitude. The food was delicious, especially the sausage and French toast :) Take your time with the menu because there are so many choices but they are all so different! We will definitely be back! read more

I went to try this place out with my mom who was visiting from overseas and unfortunately we were very disappointed. I ordered "the grizz" which was supossed to be a breakfast for the hungry but I wish I would've eaten something before going to this place. Their eggs were really small, pancakes tasted terrible and on top of that they had green bell peppers mixed with the them like they didn't clean the pans throughly before starting the next order. I can't remember the name of the breakfast my mom ordered but she ordered it mainly because she wanted a couple of biscuits. Instead they brought stale cornbread which covered almost half of the plate and had very little actual food. I complained to the waitress but she said that the restaurant only carried that type of "biscuits" which made no sense to me so I had to order french toast to make up for that. The french toast believe it or not had a piece of cilantro stuck on them which only tells me they prepare meals without even cleaning their pans, etc. I don't even want to think about the cross contamination they have going on in their kitchen. Honestly I should've gone to Denny's which is like 3 mins away and I would've paid way much less as well as enjoy it more. When I was ready to pay I talked to the manager about how displeased I was with our meal and she was very courteous and understanding. She offered a discount but I still ended up paying $30 dlls for a breakfast that tasted like crap and left me hungry. I can't understand how this place was packed considering their food quality and prices. Anyways that was my experience and I will not be recommending this place to anyone that is for sure. read more

This is the second time I've been to this location and both times had the pleasure of having Kemera as my waitress. Not only was she attentive to our normal needs but she went above and beyond insuring we had everything in a timely fashion, even offering substitutions we weren't aware we could make BUT making our meals that much better. She even asked if we'd like to-go cups for our drinks giving us fresh drinks rather than pouring our remaining watered down remainder in the cup. Food was super good and the staff was polite till I tried joking with the waiter when he came to check on us, I said "oh the foods terrible that's why nobody's talking." Which when nobody is taking at a table that usually means everyone is eating so obviously I was kidding. Then I proceeded to apologize and say I was just kidding because I really thought the food was good and he was working hard. Then when I tried to tell him thank you and apologize as I left he told me nope every time I tried to say something to him. He ignored and spoke to the rest of my party. I Couldn't tell if I had actually upset the man or he was just playing back. Either way it upset me and made me feel very uncomfortable. I'm someone who suffers from social anxiety so I try to mask it with jokes and sarcasm. It was kinda upsetting when I tried to apologize and actually talk to him. I make jokes but instantly try to let them know I'm joking. This was not the case. He wouldn't even check me out. He walked always from the register as I walked up and made someone else do it. But the wait for our food was a lil long we waited a lil after a half an hour for our food to arrive. The service was good. The merchandise area was a little much, but I could see people wanting to by t-shirts and pajama pants and lotions with bears on them. We were not greeted for a good while after we sat. I would usually be a little agitated, but in this case, it worked to my advantage since I had no idea what I wanted to eat. Diners always carry a bit of everything and I can never decide what to get. Finally, I went with the California omelette with hash browns. The portions are big here? I'm impressed. Tasted pretty good too. The orange juice is freshly squeezed and delicious. Only thing is, it comes warm. They provide a glass of ice...but orange juice with ice is just weird. My boyfriend got the double cheeseburger combo. He said the patties were excellent. Also, for $2.99 (I think?) he was able to add a milkshake. The regular price is $4.49 or something like that, so the deal was good. He chose strawberry and it was sooooo good. The milkshake had amazing consistency (which is super important when it comes to milkshakes!) and they even give you extra in a tin on the side! Awesome! I tried this place a few weeks ago and was craving breakfast food. That was my first time going there, and I noticed the cute bear decor. Service was good. I ordered the eggs benedict and my boyfriend ordered the chili cheeseburger. The eggs benedict was ok. It wasn't bad, either. I was disappointed with the poached egg because it was cooked all the way. I didn't have the pleasure of having a runny egg yolk spill onto my ham and english muffin :( the chili cheeseburger was pretty good. it's definitely heavy. the fries that came with it were alright. Been a big fan of this chain for a long time now. More than enough food and mostly great. Biscuits are huge and with butter and blackberry jelly...amazing. The Milpitas location is one of the very best this chain has to offer. Great service, Managers ask you how the food is, very well done. A little secret, when its crowded check the counter. This place was pretty good. The wait was long but seeing we were at the Milpitas location there were familiar faces so playing a bit of catch up made time go by fast. The portion sizes were HUGE! I was not expecting that at all. I ordered the California omelet, that was the size of half my plate! But it was amazing. I love all the cute bear decor especially the hang glider out front. My grandma (the birthday girl might I add) loved the mugs, and kept telling us so during the whole meal, so getting one for her was a must. I'll definitely be back, oh our waiter was also great! Never been disappointed. Food is consistent, service with a smile and a little extra. Clean. We don't typically go during time volume days/times so haven't had to wait more than a minute it two for a table. Food can be a little slow arriving to table but when you have good company you don't notice this. Always be grateful to the waiter that let me know Black Bears ranch dressing has bacon in it. I think I'm confused because when we go to this restaurant, we get a placemat that is the menu and it's tiny and flat, nothing but the most basic of basics. There isn't a lot of variety for people who like a more ethnic-based meal or a healthy meal that has taste, or .... anything interesting. There is one fruit mix that is melon and strawberries. That's it. There's no real flexibility to have a more interesting or healthy meal. They have one type of tea bag. One type of coffee. No soy or rice milk, and apparently no non-dairy creamer as when I asked if they had soy milk for the coffee, they said 'no'. I didn't think to ask at the time for non-dairy creamer. I certainly wouldn't have asked if they had honey since I struck out on tea. One Lipton tea bag is just not how I want to start a morning if avoidable. However, I see on the website and posted pictures there appears to be more. It's a standard, basic diner, and I think that many diners have more hard-core midwestern type diner food if that is what you're looking for. So, it just seems weak to me from both an old fashioned diner standpoint as well as from a more healthy or more ethnic standpoint. Perhaps I'm just missing something. If we have to go there again for a breakfast meeting, I'm going to search for a larger menu to see what I might be overlooking and will update if I'm wrong. read more

We had originally arrived 30 minuets early to reserve seats for 10 people and we expected to wait due to it being lunch hour and near the holidays. However we were pleasantly surprised when we were seated immediately with no wait. The waitress that was serving us, Eloisa, was amazing when she came over. She was very attentive and always checked to make sure we were doing ok even as people were coming in from our group she would be there when they came in. She also made us feel like family with how kind she was. Her personality was contagious and brought us all into good moods. I have no complaints about the food nor the service. First I'd like to say, I really enjoy the Black Bear dinning experience at almost all their locations. I would rate those experiences between 4 and 5 stars. Typically a very good American style meal at a reasonable priced. However, I had a very strange experience at the Calaveras store, which was very different from the other 5 stores I've visited in the Northern California area. I decided to have breakfast about 9am on a Wednesday. Typically a mostly calm time at the other Black Bear diners I've visited in the past. This was no different at this location. When I walked in there were probably 15 people (that we could see) in the entire restaurant and no one waiting for a table in the reception area. It took about 10 minutes before some acknowledged our existence, and another 5 minutes before we were seated. Once seated, it took 15 minutes for someone to take our order. This seemed a little long, but nothing to whine too much about. I chalked it up as "These things happen." But, once the order was in we waited about 40 minutes, and no food arrived. What was really strange is there were about 17 plates of food ready in the kitchen just waiting for someone to deliver them to the tables. The waiter kept shuffling the plates around waiting for something specific to show up. Nothing was really making it out to the tables. At this point, I though if I had actually received my breakfast it would probably be cold, where I would have to wait another 40 minutes the waiter to fix the meal. The party at the table behind me got so frustrated waiting for their food, they walked out of the restaurant. So did I a few minutes later. Here's what I believe happened... Some one or multiple someone's didn't show up for work. The waiter got very confused about what table was getting what food. The manager wasn't managing, and had to play waiter for the time. This I can understand, and forgive. But, it's the managers job to understand what going on in his/her store. Never, did he or the waiter apologize for the wait. Nor, did anyone stop by to give us an ETA. This I can't forgive, which was sat the least very disappointing. I haven't walked out of a restaurant in 15 years. Hopefully someone has addressed whatever issue was going on in that specific store. I won't be back to find out. read more

I just ate at the Black Bear Diner on Calaveras BLVD in Milpitas, Ca. I ordered steak and eggs and it was a great meal. But mostly the waitress(Adriene) made the visit FAR MORE ENJOYABLE with her professionalism, expedited service and being very courteous and pleasant. That's what made the meal far more greater. Came here for dinner a few times to try their dinner items. The BBQ ribs and tri tip were so so. Just wanted to try it. Won't order them again.The Prime Rib was fabulous and cooked perfectly. The chicken fry steak was very good. Even tho I liked the one from IHOP better I won't hesitate to order it here. The meal came with a muffin and soup which was yummy. It could be a meal by itself. Some other patron ordered onion rings and as the waitress passed by I wanted to snag one. They looked good. Our server was named Sarah. Very attractive ,nice, and very attentive. One of the better waitress I have encountered in my lifetime. Next time I will try dessert. I was way too stuff the times I been there to try them. A couple of guys and I ate at Black Bear Diner. It was the first time for two of us including me. We enjoyed the interiors. There are lots of bears. The children make a comment on the bears to their parents. The stool area has televisions for the adults, lol. There is no problem watching sports. I ordered a breakfast consisting of eggs, bacon, hash browns, and a biscuit. My complement was the biscuit. It was huge. The bacon was thick as stated in the menu. The hash browns were too greasy. My order was decent overall and portions were good. The guys enjoyed their meals. The diner quality food is three stars. I ate better food at comparable diners. However, Black Bear is good for families because of the bears. There is a tiny playground next to the cashier. I believe sodas have no refills. Prices are okay--not too expensive. I first tried Black Bear in 1999 and whenever I get a chance to eat at one, I do. I've never tried their lunch or dinner because the breakfast is so damn good. The pancakes are enormous, the corned beef hash is freshly made and the sausage links are amazing! Everything comes in large quantities and is of the highest quality. What more can you ask for? Oh, and the service is great! So, if you have a choice between a Denny's, an IHOP or Black Bear Diner, choose Black Bear Diner everytime. If there's a line, WAIT, it's well worth it. Been here 4 times and the last time I went was a last for me. Came for breakfast and the man at the front told me the breakfast specials. Sat down before 11am to order and the server took a very long time to come so it was a little past 11am already. She then told me they don't honor the special prices anymore because it "just passed 11." Okay, that's fine, but I did keep in mind that if she were more prompt with service, I would have ordered before 11. My boyfriend's food came out first... by at least 5 minutes. When my food came, it was the wrong order... so I had to wait some more. It wasn't as good as when it first opened in my opinion, but edible. The table next to us ordered something with a fruit salad and when it came out, the lady immediately pointed out there was a bug in it and had it sent back. The main reason I'm leaving a feedback is because of what happened this morning. We ate there for breakfast and I accidentally left my sunglasses. After realizing I left it at the resto, I immediately called BBD. I was entertained by the person who answered the phone and took my number just in case they find it. I was in the store nearby so I decided to go back after my grocery shopping. I went in and 3 staff members helped me. They help me looked and one of them found my sunglasses. I was so relieved.
