July 3 I took my grandkids to lunch. Forrest 12 and Riley 10 we love sitting T their counter. Riley says other than the pancakes her dad makes at home Black Bear has the best, with chocolate chips... and with them she orders French fries. They get the " Old School" chelate milk shake and split it. The staff always makes it and serves it perfectly. Forrest gets the cheeseburger and the best onion rings in the world. Sitting at the bar we enjoy watching the food come out of the kitchen and all the waitresses run about....being at the counter the kids and I get such sweet and excellent service from them all. The extra napkins, the smiles, the sincere attention to the kids and their Papa. It's a lively place and reminds me of the many dinners across America I have been to down home, original, super friendly and great food. It's also a special place to be with my grandkids as they grow up over lunch take our time and enjoy conversations and our time time. I had a wonderful experience at this Black Bear because of a server. The table adjacent to the table where my family and I were seated was rather noisy for us. When we asked this incredibly nice server Lola if we could switch tables, she graciously cared after us and fully understood the situation. Lola made sure we were okay by checking in on us while we sat and ate. We had a wonderful experience since this waitress was a pleasure to speak with. Lola would greet us and depart with a pleasant smile. While the food was good, our visit was made more memorable by the warmth and joy our server displayed. As with our (my hubby and I) normal routine, we love to eat out for breakfast one day a week especially on the weekend. Today was the day. We have been going to this Black Bear every other weekend for the last 7yrs since moving out to the East Bay. There are plenty of parking spaces on this lot. This location is by Oakley City Hall and Oakley PD so it's pretty safe. It was great to have Indoor dining re-opened but it was awesome that this location had outdoor dining available once Covid-19 restrictions were more lenient. Today we arrived around 1030am and looked really busy as there were many customers still waiting to be seated. I was able to find a parking space quick and my hubby was already seated within 5min. We were seated by the counter bar area but we did have a small booth fit for 2ppl. We ordered around 1045am. Today I decided on the Big Foot Chicken Fried Steak w/country gravy on the side and also brown gravy on the side w/fries, over easy eggs, and sweet cream pancakes. My hubby ordered the special today which was Prime rib w/over easy eggs, hash and French toast. Food: Positive: - Chicken Fried Steak was on point. Flavorful and not overly battered. The size portion was huge and fries were cooked nicely. It was not burnt or oily. Brown gravy and country gravy was delicious, not runny and not too salty. Pancakes are delicious and given to me as I had asked ... no powdered sugar on top. - Prime rib was seasoned nicely. French Toast was cooked nicely and tasty according to my hubby. The 1 French toast, though, was a very small piece. Eggs were cooked nice and yolk was still runny. To be worked on: - My order of over easy eggs were not fully cooked as the white was uncooked but the yolk was still runny. It was supposed to come with 3 eggs. But, one egg was not cooked properly, and can be barely considered as a full egg. My pancakes were a lot smaller than what I'm used to getting here. - My hubby's prime rib was mainly cold and a little warm as soon as you get to the middle of the prime rib. Service: Positive: We were able to order in about 7min from being seated. We received our coffee and water first and then ordered our entrees. Server was great. She was very attentive and asked whenever we were low on coffee and water. Server provided everything from start to finish and provided us our to-go boxes and sauce containers as well. To be worked on: I have never been confronted about why I was taking photos. But today was the day. I always try to avoid taking photos with people in them unless it was ok with them. But, unfortunately, taking photos of indoor dining and the register, it was difficult to take as there are always employees serving customers or taking payments. I was confronted by the MOD: I believe her name is Similar to Mariah but spelled differently (I apologize if spelled incorrectly). She confronted me in the middle of me and husband starting to eat. She said "Can I know why or is there a reason why you're taking photos of my employees? Because some of my employees are not comfortable with it". I apologized but I informed her that I am only taking photos only for Yelp and Yelp review. I do believe an MOD should be more professional and say Excuse me before interrupting us as we were eating. Also, rather than making the assumption that photos were being taken of their employees... she maybe could have asked first as "we noticed you were taking photos, would it be ok to ask why?" I have met the owners of this location and they are great. I have also actually had this MOD as our previous server years ago and she was awesome as well. But today was not a great experience. I can understand if employees feel uncomfortable but I do believe this establishment has the option to not participate in Yelp for reviews. But it would be nice to be informed in a more professional manner that photos of food can only be taken so this can be prevented moving forward. Also the owners should inform staff about sometimes there will be Yelp reviewers and photos to be taken to review on their dining experience. read more
