Hey great food, I've always loved this place. But make sure to ask for a high chair before you order any meals. Today we had to ask 3 times before getting a high chair. In the mean time my daughter burnt her hand on recently poured coffee and our food was served before she could be seated in her own chair leaving me helpless to feed myself. I asked for a to-go container and almost left. There is a shortage of high chairs here. Also they offer a military discount to "active duty" this is nice enough but after how our breakfast went I figured I'd point out--sometimes the active duty member isn't present because of military orders. Maybe I'm just not used to this type of food....I didn't enjoy my meatloaf or the green beans, which come with bacon? in them. My friend said that's how they are in the south, but it just doesn't taste the same (he used to work in a southern state and said it's just not authentic). Not sure if they're trying for that taste. The turkey wasn't anything to write home about, either. But, when they missed part of my order, they gave me (wait for it) an extra side of green beans, as well as my missing part....which was nice of them, but I'd rather have just picked something else (or not gotten anything) since I don't like green beans and they weren't a part of anything I'd ordered. Hungry? Well this place serves up huge portions fit for the a hunger of a bear. I ordered "The Grizz" which consisted of two sweet cream pancakes, three eggs, two sausages, two bacon strips, and a substitution biscuit instead of hash. The biscuits were pretty grub! The sweet cream pancakes were definitely fluffy and mouth watering! I gazed across the table to two of my friends who ordered Chicken Fried Steak. One ordered the Big Foot portion and the ordered the standard portion, which I thought was pretty big. I was amazed and shocked that my friend who usually wipes clean his entree plates and them some, had to ask for a to-go box for the Big Foot. This bears galore place was kinda cool for a themed diner. The menus were all printed on newsprint. And there was a mascot bear walking around the dining area. My son wanted scrambled eggs late in the evening, and we came here to experience family dining. I had the T-bone steak platter, hubby had the bbq burger, and our son had the kids' breakfast meal. The steak was a tad bit overcooked, even though I asked for medium-well. Our waitress could have brought more napkins after observing how messy a bbq burger can get (hubby makes more of a mess eating than the son)! Their menus are cute. Over the years that we have been going here I have had one star experiences and I have had 4 star experiences but mostly I have had A-OK 3 star experiences...so that's what they get, what they've earned. If you have never been to a Black Bear Diner before, don't let this one be the standard you judge the chain on. It's at least a star below what I am used to getting from Black Bear's in Sparks, Fernley and California. The atmosphere is fine, sometimes the dinghy shows though and sometimes they have the lights low enough to hide it. All in all still lightyears better than a Denny's or IHOP. Bear knick nacks cover the walls and every nook and cranny of this place. And if decorations weren't enough they have a store with Bear merchandise too. So if you have an aunt that likes bears or an uncle who is a bear...this just may be the perfect place to get their next kitschy gift. The food is sturdy and standard diner food. Nothing is amazing or super creative when it comes to flavor or ingredients. We usually hit this place up for breakfast. So it's eggs eggs and more eggs. They have some good choices on the menu. Most egg plates come with 2 eggs, there are a handful of 3 egg plates and all of the omelets are 3 egg. The newspaper layout of the menu is neat and has a frivolity to it, but the layout is too jumbled for the "quick read" that menu's need to be. However...no need to update the menu just yet with a better flow, because that would just make a good excuse to raise prices. The last time we went in, my wife and I ordered up the Grizz. They allowed me to substitute Chicken Sausage for the regular sausage. We love the pancakes but for our appetite, just one will do. The other two were taken home for later consumption reheating them works just fine. One of the things I have always had a problem with here is their sloppy plating. I really should have taken a picture of my plate the last time. The scrambled eggs were just thrown on, and the potato was strewn on as well. I don't know if it's to fill the over large platter or what. The service here can be spotty. It's not ever been a place to go and really get to know the waitresses. They are usually pretty busy and can't stand and gabb. Some are good and some will let your glass sit empty or ignore you completely for 30 minutes. The prices are middle of the road. Goldie Locks would be fine with the pricing structure here....not too soft, not too hard but just right. Most menu items are under $10 with the exception of a handful of dinner options. Parking is private and plentiful, however pulling into the lot can sometimes stick you hanging in the street because of the way the lot is organized. Many spots are too close to the entrance so people will suddenly stop and wait for a spot, forcing the people behind them to hang out on the street. Has a Jukebox that plays for free most times I am in there. Just pick a few songs and you can feel like you are in the olden days...where people actually listen to music off of spinning discs. No doubt we will return because they are one of the few places that GETS gluten free cooking. Cross contamination seems to not happen here for my Celiac friend. read more

Was kinda hoping prices would be lower here due to competition from the casinos and numerous other diners ... no dice. Exact same prices as locations in the more expensive areas of California. They do ply you with a lotta food for the money though, and the quality here is up to snuff with the other locations I've tried. It's great for a "farmer's breakfast" when you want to skip either breakfast or lunch, and just roll the two meals into one big one around 10 am or so. Definitely enough food to cover two meals worth of cals, that takes the sting off the 12-15 dollar-a-head price point (after tip). Not all staff wears their masks or if they are they aren't worn properly. We had a waitress spill a drink on our table and on my brother. She barely cleaned up the drink and the table was still wet and sticky and we ended up cleaning it up ourselves. After she left no one came to take our orders after about 20 minutes. We also had two different waitresses come to take our drink order which shows poor communication between staff. Our waitress for the remainder of the time was very helpful and checked in if we needed anything else (her name was Heather). This is a chain diner that offers all the traditional fare (breakfast, sandwiches, blue plates and large American sized desserts) but for some reason, I kinda like this place. I wouldn't even think of stepping into a Denny's before 3 am. But this place for breakfast just seemed more original with the log cabin thing going for it. I had actually been here twice. The first was a dismal 2 star experience with poorly executed food. I didn't think breakfast was hard to screw up but they managed on my first visit. Over easy eggs were super runny (the whites were completely raw and clear) ,sausage burnt and waffles were sickeningly doughy, not crisp and light. So why would I go back? Well I'm not one who usually judges to critically based on one experience. Shit happens and there are new days. But fool me twice, shame on you. 2nd visit was more on par with a decent breakfast diner. Tried their "homemade" sausage patty which is an Italian style with eggs. Good texture and flavor with nice reddish hue and obvious flecks of fennel seeds (hallmark of good Italian sausage), but it was just a little too salty. I know sausage should be salty but this had a sting to it, which means the salt level went beyond its flavor enhancing purposes. The hash browns were a thick shred which gave it a nice texture. So for a breakfast that gave me a choice of different sausages and an English muffin for toast, this was right up my alley. So sure enough it seemed like my 1st visit was a fluke b/c they seemed pretty busy both times and they do have multiple locations and I'm sure they weren't able to grow and expand based on what I had the 1st time. Went here a few days ago. Busy and got even more so with a bunch of what I assume were volley ball players. Quite large groups of them showed up with no advance warning. But we were seated and attended too straight away. As we sat and watched we figured someone did not show up for work as these people were working their asses off. Not only that they were doing it with a smile and precision. Our server I think was named Mandy, but I could be wrong. We ordered and were told there were no salads left. Which surprised me but if I had thought about it a little...... But guess what she showed up with the salad we requested and the right dressing to go with it. Great service. Friendly and fast, almost too fast. We didn't even have enough time to drink half a cup of coffee before my scramble and my mom's (happy post-mother's day breakfast!) omlette arrived. Hashbrowns were undercooked, as were the eggs. Both were completely edible, but could have used another minute or two to add some texture to the potatoes and get rid of some egg-based moisture. The biscuit was a bit too bread-like and not dry-biscuity enough. Nothing was bad, but a bit of seasoning during the cooking process would have really made a huge difference. I read more

Ugh. Really?!?!? Black Bear?!?!? I think people are just in the habit to go to this restaurant anymore, and are getting used to ok service and food. We waited 45 minutes for food; the service was meh; we had to repeatedly serve ourself and get our own napkins, silverware, coffee and water; and, our food had sat under the heat lamp for a while (the garnish was wilted and hot, and my burger was cold in the middle and pretty rare.) OH - and 'freshed squeezed orange juice" my ASS!!!! I'm from CA and know better! Such a disappointment when we could go to a place like Peg's that is EXTREMELY BUSY but the food is awesome! AND THAT OJ IS DEFINITELY FRESH SQUEEZED! I do have to say that I did enjoy the lack-luster guy in the bear costume. The food is best known for breakfast selections and it's huge burger, but we ordered the Asian cabbage salad, a patty melt, and the chicken flatbread. Portion sizes are huge and food was decently good.....this along with top-notch service and a dessert on the house for winning, got high ratings from me!! Not the best, but still decent food. The first time I ate here I had the meatloaf, and learned the hard way that the portions here are ENORMOUS. Meatloaf was okay (not as good as my Mom's, but I'm biased). Mashed potatoes were good, but it's hard to mess up mashed potatoes. The next time we came was for breakfast. I've stopped at several Black Bear Diners along my travels. This one had the same good old comfort foods and friendly service I've come to expect. The decor is certainly not everyone's taste, with black bears everywhere you look. One was secured to a log post right above our table and leered at my sister and I throughout the entire meal. The waitress was never far away and we had no problems with any wait between seating, ordering, and acquiring food. I ordered the Shasta Scramble with hashbrowns and toast. It was stuffed full of avocados other goodies. Very pleased overall. Coffee cups never got close to empty - which in hind site may not have been a good thing as this was the beginning of a 9 hour road trip back to Oregon. read more

Rude servers! I came in one morning with a friend and a mid-50s woman with brown hair (in a bun) approached us. I'd seen her several times before. She proceeded to walk us to a table and before we could sit down (and were still walking to our seats), she asked for our drinks. My friend asked for a booth so, without saying a word she walked us to one. I then gave her my drink order and she walked off, completely ignoring me. It was then that I realized we weren't in her section. So apparently she was pissy that we wanted a booth so she deliberately ignored me. The food is good but the waitresses have, for the most part, been working there for some time and have bad attitudes. I used to eat here all the time but I'm over it now. I eat out a lot and in the past 6 years living in Reno I have visited Black Bear on at least 6 occaisions. The service has been average to poor. On one occaision I ordered a steak dinner with fries only to be told they were out of french fries (of all things). On another occaision the server forgot to bring me my soup and never offered to make an adjustment to my bill. They give large portions of food that is edible but not special. I will spend money for good food and service, but this is not the place. As for the menu on newspaper- I find it to be filthy and annoying and even difficult to read. read more

Very disappointed. I was driving down the road looking for something to eat when I saw Black Bear Diner. I have eaten at several in California and have never had a bad meal. This is my first time in Reno and I decided to eat here! I walked in to the restaurant and noticed there the reception desk wasn't staffed. No biggie. I waited, and waited. No one came. Eventually after at 7 or 8 minutes, a family came over to check out. After a few more minutes, a staff person came and helped the family first; ok, no problem, even though I was there first, kids have priority. Eventually a waitress asked if she could seat me, I told her I would prefer to have my order to go. She said no problem and would come back. I sat down in the waiting area, decided what I wanted to order and waited for the waitress. No one came back so I began standing by the hostess desk, again, no waitress. I continued to wait for several more minutes and I saw the two waitresses laughing at the kitchen. At that point I had enough. I yelled over to them and said, "Nevermind. Thank you!" I left and decided to take my business elsewhere. I can understand if the restaurant was busy, but there were literally two families in the entire restaurant and it was 4:30 in the afternoon. After coming for a conference in Reno, this place was within walking distance of the hotel the colleagues and I stayed at (the Peppermill). Decently-priced breakfast/diner food, we actually came here twice over the two days we were there for. They had a really good breakfast omelet, and our server was super nice (don't remember her name, unfortunately). Bottomline: a good little local spot to check out, and apparently there is one in San Jose as well. One of the buddies inadvertently tried to hit on our server because there is a sign saying "Bears Eat for Free," and he asked her "what exactly constitutes being a bear?"
