I've visited many Black Bear Diner franchises around the country. I always know that we will have great service and I can find a great salad. The service here is no exception. Several people stopped in to see if we needed anything. Drink refills magically appeared and dirty glasses whisked away. The only reason I take away a star is a lack of vegetarian options. This is no fault of this restaurant, but a function of the franchise. I ordered a baked potato, onion rings, and green beans. The green beans did come with bacon. Fortunately I'm not a vegetarian; I just don't eat meat very often. This is a great new place on Tucson and conveniently located near the Park Place mall. read more

We were visiting Tucson for a night and were starving! It wasn't too far from the military base, Davis-Mothan. The food was comfort food and portions were huge and didn't have room for pie! I liked the family atmosphere and the waitresses were helpful and friendly. Would recommend! read more

Can't give them a good review at all. We were never sat down inspite of being the only customers waiting there. We finally asked if we should seat ourselves and were told to wait someone would be with us. Yet for 10 minutes we sat there without an acknowledgement. During these hard times I try not to leave bad reviews but this one is deserved. Avoid this place there is better food here in Tucson than this box chain. This is one of my fave breakfast spots but today I was very disappointed. The waitress was very nice but she brought me someone else's breakfast and then stated that someone else ate my food so I had to wait for the food I ordered. Then, once I received the food, my blubbery stuffed French toast wasn't hot. I asked for another plate of food and the second time around the French toast still wasn't hot. This was our first visit. If there was a rating for quanity/price I'd give 5 stars. You won't walk out hungry from this restaurant. We always try to get two different meals to try a little of everything. In no way did I think I would eat the big bear, but was looking fwd to the chicken fried steak and biscuits. The 2 biscuits were huge and fresh. The pancakes were good but heavy versus lite. I came here for dinner one night, and ordered their avocado toast, which came with a side of fruit. The entree tasted fine, and was served on a toasted bun that was better than what you normally get, but it was nothing really special. This was a new item, so our server did not know about it. Apparently, they are ironing out the kinks. The fruit served on the side included melons and grapes. It was very fresh and delicious. The customer service here was pretty good. Our server was quick at filling up our glasses of water, and was very helpful in answering our questions despite that fact that the restaurant was very crowded. The dining room was clean. Stopped by for a late breakfast today and was thrilled with the service and food. There are social distancing measures in place and we were seated right away. The menu had a paperless option and after deciding on the black bear breakfast make it your way meal, I patiently waited for my food. The waffle was cooked perfectly and the bacon was so tasty. I also had some eggs and sourdough which were delish. My boyfriend said his burger was awesome and the sweet potatoes fries were cooked perfectly. I had some of their ranch with his fries and OMG sooooo good. The lemonade tasted fresh and it was also a hit. Overall, our meal was great! Very good customer service. I ordered the sweet cream waffle, two poached eggs and chicken sausage links. The waffle was great and unlike anything I've ever had. I also liked the chicken sausage and their huckleberry lemonade. However, I was disappointed by the eggs sitting in water. I also didn't like the fact I had to get 5 links. Ordered on DoorDash and I could not believe my eyeballs when I opened this up. I thought i was being punkd. I said to myself, "Ashton, when are you gonna pop out with the rest of my avocado?" The size of the bread made me laugh ten times harder about this too. If you're going to give me one slice of avocado, you should probably serve it on a muffin most of it was inedible anyway because of how brown it was. We have been to eat at Black Bear locations in Northern AZ, but this location was a first. While we were prepared for a wait, it was dinner time, so hoped the wait would be less than what happens during breakfast hours. No such luck --haha--pretty sure this place is just always busy! Once seated, the waiter came over to us in about 15 minute. Bit longer that I would have liked. The waiter was friendly and apologetic for the wait. We all ordered. About half hour later-our food was put in front of us. Mine was good and so was my sons. The waiter put down my husbands plate in front of him staying "I am so sorry about your hash browns, they look like they've been under the heat lamp too long--that looks horrible, so I already requested they make you a new batch". That was nice of him to take that initiative, but that was horrible for the kitchen staff to put food like that on a plate! We all completely finished our food when he finally brought out a new order of hash browns. This is the first time we had gotten service like this before-so that said, we are hoping it was a one time ordeal and plan on returning to give them another try. read more

These are the kind of places I tend to patronize only as a last resort. I mean no offense to this business but I try to stick to local places, especially during the pandemic, when small businesses really need our business. That said, the food here is decent, the portions are huge and prices aren't terribly high. I have had the parmesan sourdough burger, which sounded like it could be a flavor bomb, but turned out to be more of a firecracker. I may have had my expectations too high, but the potential for a really great burger was there. It just slightly missed the mark for me. The same could be said for their cheeseburger salad. All the ingredients of a classic cheeseburger in salad form. Lots of potential; execution... not so much. Breakfast is largely the same story. My breakfast tacos listed green peppers as an ingredient. I assumed they would be cooked. I don't like them raw but can handle them cooked. They were raw. A little time on the grill could have solved that. Now I'm just complaining, which is hardly my style, so I'll say something nice. The servers have always been friendly and attentive and food that's supposed to be, was hot. The kitschy decor, with a huge bear in the middle of the place, is a little over the top. A nostalgic restaurant for me, that serves hot, home-style meals with a great atmosphere and service. When I was younger and lived in Washington State, my family would visit Black bear often. I really enjoyed it so I was a bit disappointed when there wasn't one in Tucson when I moved here. However, this location popped up a little while ago, and you can imagine how excited I was for it! Their portions are always huge and filling. Their food is consistently hot and tasty and the service is friendly. I recommend getting their pot roast or having a pancake (or two!) as it's all great. Their menu covers quite a lot so there's something for everyone. Plus breakfast all day! I love the log cabin decor and vibes this places has. Reminds me of the old days with family, enjoying a meal. Enjoyed brunch here today. The portions are very generous. I ordered the California eggs Benedict which has bacon and avocado. I really enjoyed it! My boyfriend got the apple chicken sausage breakfast and it looked fantastic as well. The hash browns are delicious!!! Coffee wasn't my favorite. But the service was very friendly. The decor inside is very country-- not like other places in Tucson. There is bear decor everywhere. The food came out quickly. Nothing to c plain about really. To be upfront and honest, my review is based on one visit, as I am not likely to make a second one. The restaurant is cute and clean, but I couldn't find anything I wanted to eat! The menu, printed on the inside of the Black Bear Diner newspaper, is extensive, but the choices are ordinary and incredibly caloric (the menu shows the calorie count next to each entree). Most lunch entrees are in the 1000 to 1200 calorie range, which is fine is for lumberjacks and growing boys, but not for ladies who lunch. Our server announced the specials are shrimp. Yay! I love shrimp and a shrimp salad would hit the summer spot. Alas, the shrimp omelet, shrimp salad, and shrimp platter with fries and cole slaw are all made with popcorn shrimp, battered and fried. Not what I had in mind. I returned to perusing the menu, and decided on the cheeseburger salad, described as greens, chopped burger, onion, cheddar cheese, and pickles, with thousand island dressing: the burger without the bun! It was listed as 800 calories, so I asked for the dressing on the side so I could be in control. My salad arrived, huge and beautiful. Observing the dishes served around me, I noted that ginormous meals with lovely presentation are typical of the Diner's meals. But my salad looked better than it tasted: bland, bland, bland. Neither the burger meat nor the greens had been seasoned. A judicious sprinkling of salad and pepper (shaker pepper as they have no pepper grinder) helped a bit, and a carefully-speared complete bite with lettuce, burger, onion, cheddar shred, and pickle on a fork dipped in the tasty thousand island was better but not perfect. I mused that if I made this salad at home - and I probably will because the idea is intriguing - my cheeseburger salad would be well-seasoned and burst with flavor. Ultimately, the Black Bear Diner is best for families of hungry lumberjacks and teenage boys and others who need their fill of food and calories, choosing to eat but not savor. read more

We love this franchise... however 1 waitress ruined it for us; she showed her true colors with us (we are a minority couple) the waitress Misty talked to all her other tables, was polite and attentive, but to us she didn't stop by once, only to silently drop the check on our table with a look of disgust. Food is decent, but twenty thumbs-up for their pancakes. Probably the best pancakes I've ever had. They are sweet cream pancakes, and are tasty even without syrup. They are more cakey as opposed to spongey and very filling, but it won't stop you from trying to get them all down. On another visit I had chicken-fried steak. It was so so. I'm definitely on a quest for good chicken-fried steak, so if anyone knows where to get some, please alert me. I moved here from Texas, and so far nothing comes close to ones I've had in Texas. Are here with my tias and primos who live in Tucson prior to heading back to Cali. Food was plentiful. I got the grizz that came with bacon, sausage, ham, 3 eggs, hash browns and 2 gigantic pancakes. All was delicious. The customer service was outstanding, especially since we were 14 deep or so. Waiter jokingly ribbed us for being from Cali, but we gave some back in return. Stopped in for breakfast today and was very surprised. No wait as is usual for a Sunday morning. My wife ordered the small portion of biscuits and gravy with bacon and I had joe's hobo omelette with grits. Service was excellent and we were seated immediately. My omelette was very good and full of different meats. The grits were the weak portion of the meal, whimpy and bland. My wife's biscuits and grave was very good although the gravy was a bit watery. She really enjoyed the bacon it was yummy. A pretty good breakfast as neither of could completely finish. The omelette was 3 eggs and very large.
