I have been to Black Bear diner locations in Washington State, Oregon and Colorado. Each of those was a great experience. However, this location in Tucson did not meet my general expectations of what I have had in the past at Black Bear diners. Specifically, the food was very average. There wasn't anything good or bad...it was just under-whelming. I had the classic eggs Benedict and my boyfriend had the French toast. Both of us felt the same way after...just not impressed. We had a party of 16 for a Saturday 2:00 dinner. Our tables were set up and ready for us right on time. The food was really good and the size of the meals is more than what the cost would make you think. Everyone got different things and everyone loved it all. The deserts and pies and cobblers are to die for and the coffee tasted like fresh ground, fresh brew coffee, so very good! Our server was named Nate and he took care of our entire table, always smiling, happy and even gave several individual checks with a couple of group checks and never one time did he stop smiling, interacting or making sure we were well taken care of. Then, when checks came, there was no automatic tip added even with our party size. Nate gave us a great time and Black Bear gave us great food. Came here through a friends suggestion and damn this place was pretty damn good. I got a sweet cream waffle and chicken fried steak and eggs. Waffle was crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Chicken fried steak had great flavor, the gravy was on point. Waitress had a great sense of humor and made the visit enjoyable. Had me laughing. If you are in Tucson or driving through, stop in. Stopped in one morning after work for a burger! The place has a quirky atmosphere, and is kind of overdone a bit, but I think that's its charm! I was seated quickly,and my waitress was polite and efficient. I ordered the Big Bear Burger with Sweet Potato Fries! My food came out in a timely manner and was hot and fresh, I ended up with regular fries, but that didn't bother me after I tried one, they were hot and crispy, and perfectly seasoned, they were delicious! My burger was cooked as ordered it was hot and all of the veggies were fresh and the burger was huge! Dropped in during lunch, first time ever seeing a Black Bear Diner and wasn't familiar with what to expect. Overall it's a good place. I was entertained with Bear facts listed on their unique menu (newspaper like), and was curious of their tri-tip, unfortunately, I decided to keep it safe, and ordered the Turkey club, accompanied by a grand portion of sweet potato fries! Unlike most places, the sweet potato was not extra and were interchangeable with regular fries, or a house salad. The waitress (Caitlin) was very helpful with assisting me in my decision, very informative on the chain of the Black Bear diner, and friendly. If you're in the area, don't hesitate to stop by and enjoy one of their many variety meals. They offer breakfast, lunch and dinner all day. The only issue I had with this place was its cleanliness and overall appearance. There was some miscellaneous trash on the ground and the area where the ketchup, salt and pepper shakers are kept seemed dirty (grimy). Overall dining here again will be on the list. My friend and I came here yesterday for breakfast. She's been here a few times because her son loves their pancakes. I ordered the corned beef hash and she ordered California bacon eggs benedict. The food did not take long to come out. Her eggs benedict were delicious, she gets them all the time. He asked me to come back and give him another shot. Today I did and it was a complete turnaround from my original experience. I was greeted right away and had a drink with in minutes. The restaurant was full and rocking but I was noticed this time. I had put my order in within 7 minutes of me arriving and even with how busy it was I had my food within 15 minutes of my order. We had a very disappointing experience here. I had to wait a few days for my tag reflex to subside before posting this review. The restaurant seemed to be understaffed, which I know is an unfortunately common problem these days. We had to wait to be seated even though only a few tables were full. It was an hour from when we entered the restaurant until our food was served. Others around us ordered at the same time or after us and got their food before us. My California omelette tasted good, but upon closer inspection, the avocado and mushrooms were brown. At first I thought the mushrooms were cooked, but no, they were raw and browning- ew! Not only was that gross but it would have tasted better if they were actually cooked. Then I found a dead bug in my side of fruit. That was the final nail in the coffin. Why this place only has 3.5 stars I will not understand. It should be 5 starts! The food was amazing and in big servings. For my husband myself and my son our bill was $40. Let me start by saying we had amazing service from Tyler. The service is what lands this at 3 stars. Our visit was mid-afternoon around 2PM, so it was not very busy but the dining area looked as though it had not been cleaned since breakfast. It was somewhat deterring, the cleanliness, but we were hungry... so we were going to eat. We ordered burgers that were okay, but nothing out of the ordinary other than my husbands was the big burger and enormous. That is about all I can really say about the food... perhaps if we had ordered something else I would be raving, we will never know. Now, the check out process at the front was interesting. We decided to order to cobblers to go. As I watched the gal at the register help the folks in front of us, handling cash and touching the registers I was completely grossed out when I saw her straighten up the cobblers in the front case with her bare hands/fingers... touching the edges of the pies. Ummm, pretty sure that is a food handling no-no. Everyone raved about the generous portions of comfort food at this place, so maybe I jinxed it by starving myself before meeting family here for a late lunch. Surely I'll be too full after to even think of dinner later, right? Joke's on me. There seems to be some inconsistency in portion sizes from meal to meal. I utilized their website for an online order since I didn't feel like dining in or calling to place my order. Online website was super easy to use and pick out what I wanted to order. I went with the chicken fried steak breakfast with three sunny side eggs, hash browns, and biscuits. Since I got the biscuits I ordered an extra side of country gravy. The only thing I don't like is that the online instructions are only a handful of characters so you can't really type a whole message. I wanted my hash browns lightly cooked and instead got inferno roasted hash browns I couldn't even eat they were so burnt. Since I had gotten all the way back to my campsite I didn't feel like driving back up to the restaurant to get a replacement. It appears they didn't see my message of light hash browns. The chicken fried steak was perfectly crispy and I had enough for three meals with the whole plate! The food was pretty tasty and I'd definitely order again despite the hash brown mishap. This was our first time dining at the Black Bear Diner and I was very pleased with the whole experience. The staff were all super friendly and our waitress was ever so patient and kind in answering all our questions. The decor is super cute with bears and rustic log benches in the entry. I grew up in a mountain town called b Big Bear so this felt like going home to me. Prices were reasonable and the portions were generous. We had the Saturday night prime rib special and the fish and chips. The side salad was large and very fresh. The minestrone soup was very good and had a thick tomato base. The corn muffins are big and really delicious. Pesto broccoli was very good and the green beans were nicely seasoned, reminding me of the way my mom makes them. Prime rib was good and was a generous portion. The fish was nice quality but I didn't care for the heavy batter. Flavor was good was good but ai prefer a light, fluffy batter. The desserts looked delicious but we were so stuffed from our meal that we had to pass on dessert. We enjoyed our meal and will certainly be going back. Went to this place on 4/7/23 for the first time to have the fish fry. Service was ok, fish was not cooked long enough so the breading was doughy inside, fries had no salt and were stale like they had been sitting awhile, coleslaw was dry no kind of dressing just chopped up cabbage. They had a wilted piece of lettuce as a garnish. When I told the waitress, she just smiled it off. She said "Yes, it may have sat in the window too long." Never offered to replace it or even offered to get the manager or even take something off our bill for the inconvenience. There were other patrons around us, and we could hear complaints about their food. Place did not feel clean or like anybody cared. Needless to say, I will not be going back. Today I ordered take out, and shame on me for not checking out the meal I ordered BEFORE I left this diner! First it was not what I ordered. I ordered the shrimp and chips, what I got were 3 burned pieces of shrimp and 2 pieces of cod fish, soggy French fries, soggy Cole slaw and a piece of dried out chocolate cake. SHAMEFUL!!!! I called when I got home, only to be put on hold while the manager was located. I hung up after 10 minutes of being on hold! Needless to say, I am very disappointed. Ordered online and had it delivered. Food arrived hot and well packaged. Ordered chicken club and fried chicken. Portions were large. Too large to be honest. Sandwich was good and more than filling. Came with average frozen fries. Husband also wanted cole slaw but I didn't see how to add it to order. Fried chicken; maybe it's just me, but there was an gross amount of batter on it. ( I peeled it off ) So much so that 2 pieces were unidentifiable. They were the shape of big oval lemons and turned out they were a leg and a wing, disguised as brown lemons. Came with veg and corn muffin. Veg were limp and probably pre frozen. Muffin looked good, but it was saved for later. We will try again but for breakfast and see how that goes. read more

The reason its not one star is because the food was food. The coffee was nasty, tasted burnt. They had no morning tea...Lipton is not a morning tea to enjoy with breakfast. The waitress seemed annoying when I asked if this was the only type of tea they had. She was not customer friendly. Then to top it off, when someone went to the hostess to ask for crayons, she rudely walked by him and said "no", not letting him finish asking the question. Never heard of the place until the 'Coming Soon' sign went up months ago and I researched. I thought I'd give it time to open and work out kinks before I checked it out, but we decided to brave it and just dive in! Surprisingly we got right in, choice of a table or booth, got a small booth. You can also sit at the counter. This building was the old Cocos, interesting to see how they changed things. Everyone was EXTREMELY friendly and helpful! Food was very tasty. A bit pricey, expect to spend some money, but worth it at least once to check it out. I'm SO GOING BACK to try one (or two or ALL) of their desserts. I could also see going on a date night here. Several people stopped in to see if we needed anything. Drink refills magically appeared and dirty glasses whisked away. The only reason I take away a star is a lack of vegetarian options. This is no fault of this restaurant, but a function of the franchise. I ordered a baked potato, onion rings, and green beans. The green beans did come with bacon.
