The family and I went to breakfast here today and had the most amazing experience. They were a little bit busy, but that didn't stop my service from being nothing less than sensational. We were greeted the second we walked in and seated not long after. Our waitress was Liz and from the introduction to the finish she was absolutely perfect. She was sweet and friendly but most of all professional and on it. This was a breath of fresh air to have such a wonderful person to deal with and for her to get everything right. We have not had as good of luck with other establishments in the area. It's not easy to take your entire family out to eat and everything just work out, but it did here in the most impressive way. Our family goes into Black Bear Diner for breakfast at least once a week. We love the atmosphere, the food is delicious and filling every single visit. Our favorite waitress Liz always makes us feel like we are family. We try to ask for Liz's section if it's not already full. The manager Frank always does his rounds and stops by our table to say hello and asks how everything is. It's nice to have a place in town to go to that makes you feel so welcome. I've heard about this chain for years and finally was able to try it for breakfast on Thanksgiving Unfortunately they had a very reduced holiday menu so we were limited. I ended up getting the 3x3 - scrambled eggs, bacon and biscuits. I love well made biscuits. These were not. They were huge but tasteless, and underbaked. I ate 2 bites and that was it. Bacon and eggs - ok. My companion ordered a crispy chicken cobb salad and a side of french toast. The salad was on a huge bed of uncut romaine leaves with a sprinkle of cheese and a mass of crouton. She said the chicken was ok but the salad just looked unimpressive. The french toast was decent - let's say it was very average but decent because everything else was so subpar. I did eat a few slices as I had discarded my biscuits long ago. Another odd thing going on here - they had various employees walking up and down the rather empty room pushing those enclosed rolling sweep brooms, looking for nonexistent crumbs, I guess. Should have dumped my biscuits there for them to have something to clean up. Also, the prices - very high! Unfortunately could not see the regular menu so don't know if this is the norm or a T Day hijacking. Does everyone like this chain because servers wear a goofy faux western costume? Short Version: this place is like a Dennys so I'm not expecting the food to be top notch, however, I do expect it to come out hot or at the least luke warm. We had to send a plate back because it was literally ice cold and the chicken tenders were cold but my fries were barely warm. The service is okay, the waitress apologized but probably still wouldn't go back. It was not worth the $90. The only thing I would get again is the bacon Mac n cheese but even then we had to ask for it to be reheated. Long Version: when we first arrived we were sat down after waiting for a few minutes. Our waitress promptly took our drink order and it was brought out quickly. The sweet tea is probably the sweetest tea you'll ever have, just an FYI. My sweet tea obsessed husband could barely drink it. We then placed our regular order. We ordered 2 kids meals, and 3 adult meals. Mac n Cheese bowl, buffalo chicken tenders and the meatloaf. We got a side salad with ranch and a tortilla soup. When we got the soup and salad, the soup was pretty decent and it came with bread which was really good. The salad didn't have cheese and the ranch has onion and bacon in it. When I mentioned there was something in the ranch our waitress stated they purposely made it with onions. So if you aren't an onion person, just know you can't eat their ranch. We waited at least 40 minutes for the food. Our waitress said it's because there was a table of 10, and I said it was no problem really. But when we got our food it was cold! Like it was sitting there for a long time. Which was a bit disappointing. We sent some food back to be reheated, the kids didn't really touch theirs and the meatloaf looked and smelled really bad. I'm not sure if it's from sitting, if it wasn't made fresh or because it's also made with sausage but we definitely won't be getting it again. Our waitress didn't refill any of our drinks, and she was hard to come by but it looked like she had a lot of send backs for the hour plus we were there. The table behind us was sending back burnt fries, and the few to the side were sending food back as well. The inside is decorated cutely but it's dirty. They are clearing tables but not cleaning under the tables. The bathroom door to the girls room gets stuck and for pregnant people it's very hard to squeeze into which could also pose a problem for anyone bigger than a small child or anyone with a wheelchair. I don't think this place is worth the hype. $90 for cold food that we couldn't finish. I definitely won't be recommending this place. read more

And my husband ordered my bacon but he got sausage. And the Bear Claw had jam in it, not the expected almond paste. But I love this place and we don't like to complain so we didn't. Just had a horrible breakfast here. The only good thing about it was the coffee. I had a vegetarian omelette. It was watery and didn't even taste of egg. There was some mushrooms in it and some of them were virtually raw. And lets not even talk about the home fries. Many of them were burned. There was no peppers and onions and it was clear that some of them were cut up left over french fries because of the shape. The menu makes a point of telling you that they use red skin potatoes, well I counted three potatoes. that had red skin on them. They tasted greasy as well and rubbery. Will not be returning. My dining partner had pancakes with sausage and bacon, and he said that the sausages had a funny taste behind them. On our way out, we talked to two other diners who said exactly the same thing. Plus the breakfast was basically $20, including a cup of coffee. That's very expensive for Yucca Valley. We will go back to Western diner in future. I've not had a bad dining experience there and they do a really nice breakfast. Their omelette with spinach and mushroom is really good. read more

I asked for broccoli, took 10 minutes to get my broccoli, they brought my baked potato. No butter. This is a new Black Bear Diner which has been open for two months. I am very familiar with the restaurants, having gone to many in several different areas through the years. We were a party of ten and the hostesses were very accommodating even though we arrived during the lunch hour. The waitstaff was very attentive as well. The dining room was nicely decorated in a woodland theme with black bears peeking out of the woodwork here and there. I had the Santa Maria Tri-Tip dinner which was served with two sides, a choice of soup or salad, and a corn muffin. I chose the green beans with bacon and the seasonal vegetable which is currently a butternut squash. The green beans were nicely seasoned with a smoky flavor from the bacon. The butternut squash, however, could have benefited with a few more minutes of cooking time. They were a tad hard. I had a cup of chili in lieu of the soup of the day and it was a very good chili. I would definitely have that again. The tri-tip was seasoned well and had a good flavor but was somewhat tough. The spicy BBQ sauce served with the meat was very flavorful and I enjoyed that. The corn muffin was more cakey than a typical cornbread, it did crumble easily but tasted good with butter. I may not order the tri-tip dinner next time as there are plenty of menu items that are better prepared by the kitchen. (I was eyeing a Chicken Fried Steak that seems to be a popular item at Black Bear Diner. ) I noticed that the portion size of the tri-tip dinner has reduced as well. All in all, it was a serviceable meal. I would definitely eat at Black Bear Diner again. read more

We had 4+ a 13 Mo old. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food. Mine was on the greasy side, but not terrible. It tasted good. My MIL said her garlic fries had a spoonful of garlic plopped on them. I wasn't a fan of that style of Cole slaw. I think it's vinegar-based. Not sure that was right. The hostess was very sweet. Her boss over her shoulder looked a bit militant and didn't say anything. Took my wife over to Black Bear diner on Friday afternoon. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and fries with a drink. She ordered the 4-piece over cooked chicken special. Not so special in my opinion. We waited over 30 minutes for the meal to be served, not a big deal. However, when I receive my bacon cheeseburger I noted to the waitress. It was missing the bacon. She stated , the bacon is on there as I looked for it. I found it, it was bacon bits. I let her know that it was unacceptable and I didn't order a bacon bit burger for $17.00, I ordered a bacon cheeseburger, not to mention that the fries were overcooked or cooked with old oil. The waiters brought out the missing bacon after brought the scam to her attention. I can't believe Black Bear diners are CHEAPING out on bacon, how ridiculous! I call this the beginning of the end, as I am not going back, that's for sure. Not to mention the chicken special was not a special it was $30 for 4 overcooked pieces of chicken and a cup of soup that they Referred to as a bowl of soup. Note the photo.! B Grade in window, worst meatloaf I have ever ate,nothing was good about the meal, I usually enjoy meatloaf at Black Bear, not this one.

The food was plentiful. I had the chicken fried steak. It was so tender I could cut it with my fork, it came with hash brown potatoes, 2 eggs, and a biscuit covered with gravy. There was so much I had to take half of it home. On a prior vis3it I had the biscuits and gravy, the portion was huge, I had to take half home. Both meals the flavor was exquisite. (3.0) To start things off the atmosphere was top notch for a diner. Soft rock played at a good volume in the dining room and in the bathrooms. The service wasn't up to par in my opinion. My wife needed her drink refilled for over 15 minutes. I ordered the reuben and a house salad. The reuben was flavorless and the house salad wasn't fresh (looked like a great value bag of chopped lettuce) but on the bright side the blue cheese i ordered to go with it was homemade and very good. The bathrooms were all to be expected (modern but not pristine) sink was a little dirty and there was toilet paper on the ground even outside of the stall. Not to mention there were no napkins at our table so i had greasy hands most of my meal. But taking it for what it is (a diner) it was pretty much to be expected. I recommend it for anyone wanting some variety in there life and we'll be back read more

We arrived in the middle of the week for a late breakfast/brunch. The restaurant was fairly empty, which was a good thing since there were only two employees covering the entire front-of-house. There were several dirty tables that stayed dirty for most of the time that we were there, but these two women were doing everything they could to seat customers, take orders, bring drinks, deliver food, and check-out guests at the registers. They weren't standing still for a second, so it was no wonder that it took them awhile to get to bussing the tables. The food was as expected - standard fare for a BBD. He makes our visit special every time. He has a fun, fantastic personality and has become a family friend.
