Blackie's Bulldog Tavern is a little off the beaten path, located on George Washington Highway in Smithfield, Rhode Island. Our party of five was looking for something north of Providence and one diner suggested this restaurant, as they had a good dinner here several months ago. Blackie's didn't take reservations for a party of our size, but we figured it wouldn't be very busy early on a Sunday evening. However, it was hopping when we got there, though we were nonetheless seated promptly, and were fortunate to sit on their small outside patio. I always prefer alfresco dining, though this patio was especially Spartan, not a plant or decoration to be found. It's just a patio, a wooden trellis above and a view of the parking lot. We ordered the following: * Blackie's bbq. rubbed & slow smoked, 14-hour brisket | old school chopped coleslaw | dill pickle mac and cheese | our smoked and braised pulled pork | scratch made pickles and pickled red onion $23 * Burger - freshly ground LaFrieda brisket and chuck | all burgers are made with freshly ground LaFrieda brisket and chuck and are SQUISHED "diner style" $11 * Short rib fettuccine. braised and pulled unctuous beef | 60-hr. bone broth | black garlic cream | caramelized Tuscan kale | shiitake mushrooms | our own fresh pasta | garlicky, pecorino bread crumbs $24 Let's begin with the positives: * Service was prompt * Our waitress was excellent, polite, professional and attentive * The menu is interesting and eclectic * The menu changes seasonally * One diner commented that his dinner was very good (the short rib fettuccine) The negatives: The diner who ordered the burger was disappointed, commenting it was on the dry side, and not very good. She left some of it unfinished. She said that the burger she had the recently at Burton's was dramatically better. Two diners ordered the BBQ dinner. I thought the brisket in the BBQ plate was terrible. There was almost no sauce on it, and many of the pieces were dry, stringy and tough. This was one of the worst servings of brisket I've ever eaten. I thought the coleslaw was good, but another diner didn't like it. One diner liked the mac and cheese, the other didn't care for the dill pickle seasoning. The pulled pork was certainly better than the brisket (a seemingly low bar) but nothing special, and I wouldn't order this dinner again. Would I return here? As some of our party had good experiences here, I'd probably give this place another try, but I wouldn't order the BBQ dinner and would hope for better execution. read more

Party of 2, stopped in on a Saturday night for a bite to eat, the place was very busy, fortunately we were able to grab 2 seats at the bar (reservations recommended). Ordered 2 drinks, browsed the menu, our server came back over to take our dinner order and she noticed she had forgotten our drinks. No big deal, put in our order. Drinks were good, this place has a great selection of local craft beer. Took a bit of time for our food to come but it was well worth it. I got the Hurdy Gurdy Chicken Sandwich, my wife got the Chefs Chicken Dinner. Both were excellent. Great gastro pub / farm to table place, would definitely recommend, but if visiting on a weekend be prepared for a little bit of a wait. Total price without tip was $106 for 2 entrees, 2 cocktails, and 1 beer. The Choice of music was a little odd (and a little loud) and not a good match for the overall clientele being served (some sort of pop / R&B station). I don't know what kind of magic Angie and Jeanine are cooking up in that kitchen (pun intended) but it is always an exceptional meal. I've wanted to try this place for a while. The parking lot is ALWAYS crowded and a walk-in wait is generally 2 hours. This time, I made a reservation. For as crowded and busy as it was, the staff was pretty organized. While they did give our table away to someone else on accident, they seated us only five minutes later. The tables in the dining room were packed, and I mean packed. I couldn't scoot my chair out without hitting the person behind me so if you have any COVID concerns, you should not go to Blackie's on a Saturday night. Despite the crowd, our server was incredibly efficient. She got us our drinks right away, and our apps, and kept our drinks filled. It probably took an hour to get our actual meal, but since we had our apps and drinks, I didn't mind the wait. I ordered the fancy fontina grilled cheese which was amazing as were their homemade chips. I see now why this place is so popular. The food was really good. I just would have loved more space at my table and a longer beer list. They also do takeout if you'd rather skip the crowds and eat at home. read more

Have been wanting to stop in here for some time now. Friends have raved about it and the menu looks great. I went in craving a burger and after some time looking over the menu I was pulled away from the burgers because I found the sandwich I can't pass up, particularly when I was told it was "phenomenal". I went for the, "Hi my name is Reuben". When I saw chopped, not sliced Corned Beef, I was hooked. When it arrived I thought it was the thickest half sandwich I had ever seen, then I realized they just stacked the two halves. The marvel rye was well grilled, buttery and crispy perfection. The grilling of the bread also allowed a great melt of the Swiss cheese. The meat was good and well flavored, I would have liked a little more meat, but I always believe more meat is better. I also made the mistake not to order extra kraut, which I typically would do. No such thing as too much kraut on a Reuben. The chips that accompanied the sandwich were great. My wife opted for the Cheeseburger Rangoons from the appetizer menu. She really enjoyed them. The bite I could talk her out of was good. The Beef was cheesy and had good flavor. We went there this afternoon at about 1:30. We liked the decor and the menu looked good to us so we looked forward to ordering. It was not very busy and the waitress was pleasant. We ordered sodas and when they came we ordered our meals. Salmon and a Rueben. After about 15 minutes the waitress came back to tell us she was sorry it was taking so long for our meals to come out she said she was going back in and tell them to get their act together. She came back and said, "they promised me literally 5 more minutes." We were being patient and she said "I'm going get you a free dessert or something." She then asked my wife if she wanted a glass of wine. After thinking for a second, my wife said she'd like a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Waitress said "I'm going to get you a good Sauvignon Blanc" (seemed like she was implying that she would hook us up with that glass of wine) and came back afew minutes later with it and also a manager (we didn't ask to see the manager). Both were very apologetic and about 5 more minutes later our meals came. Our food was good (not great,but good). We ate and then my wife put here card on the table and the waitress asked if everything was ok. We said yes and asked to just run the card. We left a 20% tip, noted on the bill that the manager should have comped the glass of wine. No dessert that she alluded too earlier and no comped glass of wine that was implied. After all of this we still left a generous tip for our server. But, what's right is right. read more

Our server was friendly and efficient. we liked the fun, modern design of the place, but it is loud. The menu looked innovative but the items chosen failed to deliver. The butternut squash bruschetta appetizer was not carmelized as described in the menu and squash was undercooked. One in our party returned their steak dish because the meat was tough and difficult to chew. The chipotle sauce and cheese on my fish sandwich missed the mark for taste on my entrée. Went here for the first time a few weeks ago. I liked this place a lot. SO many vegan and gluten free options. We got the vegan/gf nachos. Those were perfect to share, a good portion and delicious. I got a gf/vegan marg pizza the dough was the best GF dough I've ever had BUT my only complaint was that it was full of black char on the bottom which didn't taste good to me. The fries were amazing. My boyfriend got a vegan burger, that was a large portion but the insanely priced up charge for vegan condiments was insulting. I took one star away for that. read more

First time there was today around 1pm. I ordered a whiskey on the rocks, the falafel, and the tofu-chorizo tacos. I went for something meaty but with the falafel, the chorizo tacos good be very nice and filling. First impression of the building I thought it is very sheik for the design of the menu. It's rustic food but the interior design is very swanky. The menu is eclectic. Popular items. I do not drink fast, I sip. I finished my drink before the food came out. Must of been 20 mins and the place was not busy. I finished the drink and then asked for the bill before the food came. The bartender went to the kitchen and promised me it would be 2 mins. It was closer to 10 mins. The server said that the food takes longer bc it's freshly made. I understand the technical operations of a kitchen because I have been working in them for 21 years. I am currently in one of the best spots in Boston now. The most complex cook for the tacos were frying the tater-tots. Everything else was already prepared l, as it should have been. Took too long, and the place looks like it needs to host a different menu. The bartender was doing his best to fudge it up as well. After that, we are in Smithfield, RI. The average food in RI is below average in other areas that I lived. Blackies is above average. The Chef is doing the right thing by using better to great products. The menu is am eclectic all time favorites of hand held foods. I would go back there again. I would brink people there. read more

Since moving to this new location, I've given them multiple tries to no avail. A few months ago, a few friends and I went to Blackie's to grab a drink. The drinks were horrible - purely juice, I genuinely thought they gave me a virgin margarita. I chalked it up to a terrible bar tender, and decided to give them a second try when my cousins, sister, and I were looking to go out to eat. Again, the drinks were absolutely terrible. Every single one of us was disappointed - and trust me, we're not ones who looks for an extremely strong drink, quite the opposite. However, we should be able to at least tell there's alcohol in the drink. I gave them a third chance when going to grab an appetizer with my mom, and it was just as horrible. Getting a drink here is a complete waste of money. To make it worse, all three times the service that we had was absolutely disgusting. Their waiters are rude, classless, and absent. I do really enjoy their food - they have fantastic appetizers, entrees and sides. If you're looking for a really good meal but not having an alcoholic beverage on the side, I would definitely recommend. read more

Awful experience here and will not be returning. We came in around 8:45pm and sat at the bar area. We waited 15 minutes before anyone asked if we wanted something to drink/paid any attention to us. Bar was not packed. We tried flagging people down with no luck. A little while goes by, and our original bartender must have gotten off shift. He comes to sit down literally next to us and receives immediate service from the bartender on duty. They continue to talk for at least 10 minutes, still no service provided. Then someone from the wait staff comes over after their shift and asks us to move so they can sit with the now congregation of employees off their shift. We move all our drinks/plates/silverware. We order wine and got under poured (pictures included), do not tell me that is a standard industry pour as we were in the restaurant industry for years. Tried to get the attention of the bartender with no luck - had to ask the bar back to tell the kitchen we wanted our entrees to go. After 1 hour of being in this establishment and receiving absolutely terrible service to the point that we didn't want to eat the entrees there - we ended up paying $122 for the bill. $122 for trash, inattentive service, 4 oz wine pours, and being asked to move so employees can enjoy their shift drink/meals at the bar? I can find an overpriced meal somewhere else and enjoy the experience. I've seen some reviews on here where the managerial team responds by shading the customer - and do not be fooled. Our experience here was absolutely awful. Save your money and go elsewhere - there is a reason this place has shut down numerous times and it's not because of covid. read more
