This place was recommended to us by our Airbnb host for breakfast. You can tell it's a pretty popular place because there were a lot of people coming in and out as well as sitting outside drinking coffee or eating a pastry. I was excited for the coffee. I'm a coffee lover. I ordered a latte and a breakfast wrap. The cashier had a bit of a hard time understanding my order. I asked for 2 shots of espresso in my latte. She thought I said caramel latte. Once I restated my ordered she put it as 2 lattes orders. They ended up refunding me for one. The latte however was absolutely delicious. The breakfast wrap was not great at all. The menu mentions scrambled eggs, but it was made with powdered eggs. The texture of the eggs was not good and there was no flavor to the wrap. The menu also mentions avocado is on the wrap, but it was just lots of guacamole. I did not enjoy the wrap at all. I would come back just for the coffee.

Tiny coffee and pastry shop with outdoor seating. I got a pistachio latte after the La Jolla run and it was delicious. Not sure if it had much caffeine but really loved the pistachio taste. Really great and sweet baristas. They were hustling to get everyone's orders.

Sunrise sandwich is good, but eggs were not scrambled as described and more of a spongy brick. Would have liked for the cheese to be a bit more melted but the Chai latte was delicious

Cute little brick building right in the heart of La Jolla. I originally added this place to my list while wandering around the neighborhood and ended up coming back another day to check it out. It's a charming little café with no indoor seating, but they have plenty of covered outdoor tables, which makes it a great spot to sit, study, or get some work done. Parking can be a bit of a challenge, but that's pretty much expected anywhere in this part of La Jolla. I ordered a latte, and I was happy to see it served in a proper "for here" cup. The coffee was great, and I always appreciate cafés that make the effort to use real cups instead of disposable ones.The only downside was that service was a little slow, but they were also fairly busy, so it was understandable. Overall, I really enjoyed my visit and would definitely come back to spend a few hours working or reading.

One of my go to places for a relaxing coffee and breakfast sandwich. My fav is the sunrise sandwich which has eggs, cheddar cheese, and sliced tomatoes on a flaky croissant for only $7. Brick & Bell is a small but mighty establishment that's been a neighborhood favorite for a while. The service is good, but there is a bit of turnover as most of the staff appears to be college students. However, most are very pleasant and efficient. There's limited indoor & outdoor seating, but why not enjoy your coffee at the beach where there's plenty of seating and only a 5 minute walk.

Today was one of those days that needed just a little pick me up. Walking aimlessly i stumbled across this little coffee shop in La Jolla that turned out was not just a coffee shop. They offered different pastries and food options. Very clean and inviting. The young woman at the cash register suggested the peacan cookies that were wrapped with the cutest ribbon. I had to get them. Thank you for the smiles, treats and making my day better. Recommend highly.

Such a cozy cafe! Really easy to walk to from any store downtown in La Jolla. Great place and prices for breakfast and lunch and for coffee/tea. During my most recent visit, I came for some quick coffee to-go. We barely had to wait in line to order and within 3 minutes of ordering, our lattes were ready. Super fast and quality service! I loved my iced mocha and my husband enjoyed his iced latte. In the future, he would probably add a flavored syrup, but the coffee itself was still good. My iced mocha was perfectly balanced. Not too sweet with a rich mocha flavor and I could still taste my espresso shots. Easy to sit and dine or take everything to go!

I've driven by this place at least a dozen times and really wanted to stop by and finally got the chance today! Parking is a little tricky in La Jolla but a weekday is at least more feasible than a weekend. I arrived around 10:30 a.m. after a hike and the coffee shop was packed! Although I was able to order very quickly and get my food and coffee out fairly quickly! The service is so nice, friendly, warm and gives a really welcoming mom and pop family feel. They offer a variety of pastries and baked items as well as a full breakfast menu! I ordered a latte with oat milk and a spinach quiche and both were delicious! Definitely a really cute spot if you're in the La Jolla area.

A cozy little cafe in La Jolla Cove w a cute brick exterior that stands out from all the other buildings in the area. I had the cranberry and blueberry mini scones and they were some of the best I've had. Not too sweet and just the right texture! There is some seating outside under the umbrellas, but space gets kind of tight when there's more than a few people in line. Cranberry scone: 4/5 Blueberry scone: 5/5

Don't judge me but it's my favorite coffee shop in San Diego, even though I moved to other city. I've ordered different breakfast, pastries, and coffee there, and my go-to now is latte with almond milk. It's always busy place in weekends, but the line moves fast and staff are friendly. There are only outside seats, but it's also great to pickup your coffee and go to La Jolla Cove to chill and stroll.

Intimate little cafe around the corner from our hotel. We came here with coupons for a free pastry from the La Jolla inn By The Sea. So hubby and I each got a scone and bought a bagel and salmon to split. Server was helpful and they have a few tables out front. Loved everything!

We stopped by here on our way back home. After spending our whole vacation eating pancakes and French toast, we wanted something on the lighter end. This place is super cute and was walking distance from our hotel. Our hotel also offered a coupon for a free pastry. I ordered the sunrise sandwich. It was really yummy and was exactly what I was craving I also got a blueberry scone as my complimentary pastry. Both were delicious! Will definitely be back .

Drinks are made with to much foam, you get half a cup of foam, also they make fair to average coffee drinks but order a latte and it was barely warm. I went to this place two days and a row and had the same success both days, I even asked for no foam on the second day and got the same half cup. My suggestion go next door to the parakeet and receive a well made drink there read more

I ordered the toasted chicken sandwich. It was good but I feel I could make it at home with minimal effort. Tested like frozen pre-season chicken and the lettuce and sauces were standard. My wife had the bagel with cream cheese and tomato. She liked it but similar to my sandwich; we could have easily made it at home and probably could have given it more flavor. The girl who took our order was a bit short and rude. When my wife asked if they had jalapeño cheese bagels, the girl responded "nah...". After my wife ordered, she was very quiet so I began to give my order thinking she was waiting for me. I began to tell her until she responded "uh wait... hold on". If we come back, I'll have to try something more breakfast-y to see what the other reviews are about. read more

In the competitive world of Açaí Bowls, this place falls short of the competition. Can't rate anything, because we only ordered Açaí Bowls. Coffee and pastries looked good, but can't rate because we didn't try any. This place is in a great location just a block from the water along an awesome street full of shops and restaurants. Decor-had a county kitchen feel with white brick and lots of windows. It's very tight inside but has lots of extra places to sit and eat outside. Great location.... Service-was acceptable. They weren't overly friendly nor were they rude, just acceptable. Food-Açaí Bowls just didn't do it for me. The Açaí base/smoothie was just wasn't as favorable as other one's I've had. What was most disappointing was the amount of fruit. It only had 2 pieces of strawberries and 3 of banana. I'm used to getting these loaded with fruit. read more

This place will definitely live up to your expectations. All the delicious pastries and scones on display that catch your eye are just as good as they look. The mini scones are $1- so worth it! There is a great variety of flavors, ranging from maple walnut to blueberry. Pair a croissant or scone with some coffee! read more

Cafe tucked away in downtown La Jolla. On first sight, love how the pastries are all displayed in full view when you walk in. The menu isn't listed on the wall, you'll have to ask for a copy of the printed one. After quickly perusing the menu, my friend and I ended up getting the sunrise sandwich (but on a bagel), a bagel with cream cheese/tomato, & a cafe latte. TIP: they will bring out the food for you (& give you a cute European flag as a table marker), but they call out the drinks and leave it on the counter for you to pick up. Don't forget your drink!! One thing I noticed with our bagels is that they switched our selections - my sunrise sandwich was supposed to be on a wheat bagel but I had a plain bagel, and my friend got a plain bagel but they gave her my wheat one. Also, my bagel was burnt on the edges (but thankfully had no acrid flavor). The food was simple and tasty, but I wish they would have paid more attention to detail. As for the cafe latte, I found that my first sip was actually lukewarm, which was a bit of a letdown. I wish it came out hotter. Overall, brick & bell is a great place to catch an simple, tasty breakfast on the cheap. I'd come back again if I don't want to spend too much on breakfast/brunch in the area, but not really to fulfill any cravings. read more

Nice place to sit outside, not a ton of room inside but a great cafe to stop by and enjoy the SD weather. It's also a bit more off the main road so it's not as busy as some of the other cafes and had no wait on a weekend. Service was great, food came out pretty quick and was good. Latte was huge and delicious! read more

If you are a coffee lover , you won't like it . I ordered a hot double macchiato and the coffee tasted so watery and it was served cold. I also ordered a salmon bagel , and they assumed I wanted it toasted which they burnt. 12 dollars for a burnt bagel that I just couldn't eat. read more

Loved the scones here!!!! We went on a Sunday morning to grab some breakfast before taking a walk at La Jolla. The atmosphere in the morning was really nice. People with their dogs sitting on the outdoor patio, sipping coffee and eating pastries. What a good life! We ordered the blueberry muffin and cranberry scone with a medium cafe au lait. The total came out to be only $6!! So worth it! The pastries were amazing! The scones were perfectly structured, not too crumbly but still had that scone texture. Loved the cranberry flavor. read more

i went here last weekend with my little sister and ordered 2 iced matcha lattes. they were alright even though it tasted like straight up sugary milk and the cafe place was cozy. but i was kind of annoyed because we paid 20 in cash and our total for 2 matcha drink was $11.09 and the girl who took our order who had red-ish hair and a slight accent gave us back $8.11 when it was supposed to be $8.91. i know its just a few cents short so its not that big of a deal, but if you're going to work in a place where you have to handle being a cashier, do the math in your head right if the machine doesn't tell you the amount of change you have to give back instead of being incompetent and dishonest towards customers or just go back to basic 1st grade math and learn how to add and subtract! read more

I have been to this cafe couple of times now and every time I was there it was a pleasant experience. The food/Baked items was really good quality and great tasting specially their ALMOND CROISSANT. I had lox and bagel which was delicious too and their coffee rocks! The vibe of the place is very relaxed and friendly, mostly local people and not touristy. They have few sitting inside and mostly outside tables. Overall it's a great place and one of my favorite cafe's in La Jolla to grab/sit and enjoy croissant and coffee. read more

Sorry just can't go along with the enthusiastic crowd of fans. Just got coffee to go because when I witnessed how all the pasties being stored toward the back were attracting lots of flies and those same flies were also allowed to light on food prepared from the kitchen awaiting delivery to customers I got turned off read more

La Jolla has a ton of sit-down breakfast options, but the great thing about Brick & Bell is that it's one of the few fast casual spots. It is tiny inside, but the food is worth it. The everything bagel is very good, and their scones are terrific. You can get a full-size scone for $2.95, and a mini-scone for just a buck. We tried chocolate chip, blueberry, and cinnamon apple. They were all great. The spiced chai here is very good also. They open super early in the morning, so this is a nice option if you just want to grab a quick breakfast. It seems to be a popular option for all the people working out at the nearby fitness clubs. read more

This place is great for not overly fancy coffee. I've come here a few times for a quick and not overpriced stop for coffee. There is more outdoor seating that indoor seating, but the patio is nice to sit at when it is a sunny morning. I like their chai lattes and their matcha lattes. My boyfriend always goes for the white mochas. I've also had their almond croissant which was good as well. read more

Brick and Bell is best kept secret. Located inside the lobby of Scripps XMed facility, customers can enjoy delicious and fresh variety of offerings. From homemade pastries, fresh fruit, yogurts as just some of the breakfast delights. Then lunch goodies refrigerated and again fresh and made with yummy breads, egg salad, turkey, cheese and more. And to my surprise their dinners are so much in demand that people who do not even have an appointment in the building will drive over daily to the Brick and Bell just to pick up one of the pasta or other 3 variety dinners that take only heating and a smile that you are going to enjoy a healthy hearty easy to eat homemade meal just for you at less than you would pay at most restaurants., top it all off with hot up of coffee or coffee specialty drink and a delightful cup of stemming tea. read more

Cute cozy coffee shop in the area of LJ! I love the location and it's in the area close to the cove. The inside is rather small with some seating with a little bit more seating outside. There's parking up front which is convenient. I've came during the weekday mornings and they have been friendly and give good service. I like the product selection here and their cranberry scones are delightful. The scones are fresh here and it paired perfectly with my *Vanilla Latte*! I shall return. =] read more

Terrible. Ugh. Seriously? Coffee: 1/5. Burning hot. Watered down. Not even real espresso? Ordered a latte and got a cup of foamed milk. And a splash of coffee flavored water. Please don't come here. I beg you. Paninis. 2/5. They taste good. But super burnt and dry!!!!!! And tiiiiiiny. I eat small portions and I could've ate TWO of the paninis. Customer service: I'm speechless. This place is just ridiculous. My friend, who ordered 15mins prior to me, got her food HALF AN HOUR AFTER ME. The only same reason to ever go here is for a mini scone. Which is like a couple bucks. read more

Our friends introduced us to this cute little spot in La Jolla and it has since become a favorite. The coffee is fresh and delicious and the pastries are worth the exercise needed to burn them off. But the absolute best bet on the menu is the açaí bowl! Thick açaí topped with sliced fresh fruit and the best granola I have ever tasted, this bowl is delicious and refreshing and leaves you feeling healthy! read more

I was a huge fan of this place until I ordered a chicken salad with feta and they heated up the chicken to put on the salad, had I known this prior to ordering I wouldn't have gotten it. Definitely not a fan of microwaved chicken pieces. read more

We found the Brick and Bell again! Visiting La Jolla for the weekend and searching for an early morning coffee shop we recognized this shop from Tucson. They accommodated all our needs for strong Americanos, eggs and even fresh bananas! Gracious and friendly service in the early early morning hours are appreciated! read more

Coffee shop chain with a nice little corner spot in La Jolla. Pastries are excellent from the scones to the muffins. Breakfast sandwich was better than expected from a shop with no kitchen. The egg seemed to be pre-made, but was decent in taste. Prices were good. I enjoyed any coffee beverage we ordered. read more

Best scones outside of England ... these are the real deal. I usually come for the sandwiches and smoothies, and leave with scones for the following morning's breakfast. Their proprietary coffee is grounded, bagged and ready for you to enjoy at home. Friendly baristas and atmosphere. read more

One of my favorite places. Awesome tasty delights and the people are very cool. If you walk in like you're Madonna expecting a concierge to stop everything and cater to you then you're in the wrong spot. Just be patient and you'll love your food in this lovely little spot in The Village. read more

This place is beautiful. The presentation could make a person (cough, cough: me) forget all about her resolution to eat healthier. Giving a nod to the concepts of portion size and moderation, I ordered an almond milk chai latte and a gluten-free brownie. Both tasted just as good as they looked. Devouring them made me wish I had ordered one of everything; I may go back on payday to do just that. (...what?) The lady behind the counter was very nice and helpful. I appreciate that she helped me settle on what to order. All in all, I'm super excited about this place and look forward to trying everything on the menu. read more

Give this guy, a tall impressive Americano and I scone loaded with almonds and no doubt, you have a fan! Plus the coffee cup had one of those cool slide lids that I like. Only the fondest memories of Brick & Bell! I stayed in La Jolla for a few days after traveling from the east coast (and Iceland immediately prior) so my time zones were all screwed up. I passed out from exhaustion by 9 every night and was awake and bright eyed by 6am. I wasn't QUITE ready to start working right after waking up (though I did soon enough after), so I trudged out to Brick & Bell for a coffee and breakfast sandwich bright and early each morning. Beyond the fabulous coffee, my "sunrise sandwich" of egg, tomato & cheddar (I also added avocado) on a croissant was just the thing to deliciously ease me into the day. I had a nonfat latte and avocado toast. The coffee was meh and the toast was good. I ordered a few mini scones to go and they were delicious. Some sketch activity was going on outside with some homeless people and it didn't feel very safe. read more

I really wanted to love this place. It's one of the only decently-priced cafes in La Jolla, not a chain, and lives in a quaint little brick house. Sadly, I was disappointed. There was almost no indoor seating (which stinks when it's a cool, cloudy June Gloom kinda day), the sandwiches were small and sparse, and my coffee was served with so much cream that I actually got sick from it. My mom loved it, however. So... you know, just another opinion. read more

Unfortunately, my fried chicken and biscuits were way too salty and I struggled to taste any hot honey. It just tasted like watered down tobasco sauce, which was disappointing! My boyfriend said he loved his fried chicken and waffles. He also thought my chicken wasn't too salty, but I felt it was for me personally. So I guess it might be a preference thing. With excitement and anticipation, I headed home immediately and plated my slice on my fancy porcelain dish. After the first bite, I was shocked with disappointment to realized this is NOT the one, Not even close to other versions I've had. Apparently, this cake looked better than it tasted, and it tasted horribly bad, possibly the cake passed its expiration date, because ups on closer inspections, the strawberries on top looked over ripen. Good thing I didn't order a whole cake, but I hate spending any $$ on anything I can't enjoy. Perhaps is was just an off day at this bakery. It's pretty much straight up bagels and schmear here; no sandwiches with the exception of adding smoked salmon to a bagel. Your main options are a 3- ($15), 6- ($24), or 12-pack ($48) of bagels, the 2 aforementioned coming with 1 tub of schmear, the 12-pack with 2. There are plain, everything, poppy, salt, and sesame bagels with a number of schmears, some flavors which appear to rotate. I chose the 3 bagel pack though there was a wait for the poppy so they gifted me with a 4th bagel which was nice. The poppy bagel, while incredibly messy, was uh-mazing with the scallion cream cheese. Definitely save said tub of cream cheese for later. I ate it outside at the tables, grabbing a paper plate and utensils from the front counter. The bagels were quite dense and chewy though the outer layer not as crusty until it cooled. This did make it a little annoying to cut the bagel in half to schmear the inside. My strategy to eat another bagel the next day and freeze the others after they cooled proved to be the best. I just defrosted the next bagel in the fridge the night before. This prevented them from getting rock hard, a constant complaint, as I've been told. While the amount of carbs every day would cause many to pause in this toxic carb-fearing world, to me carbs are fuel. Never ever fear the carbs and eat your bagel enamored heart out!

And it's delicious!!! Allie was our host and was able to find a great place to eat. All the tables are great with even an outside covered patio available. Jade our waitress was very friendly and nice. She was very patient and professional and listened to us in a kind way. With young ones with us, it is challenging. However, Jade ensured that we enjoyed our meal at the Shorehouse Kitchen. At brunch, my go to dish is the French toast that will tell me the quality and care from the kitchen. I was blown away at how delicious the French Toast was. The name is the "CARAMELIZED TAHITIAN VANILLA BEAN FRENCH TOAST with Fresh Blueberries or Bananas and Chantilly Cream, or a Grilled Pineapple". Jade gave away the secret ingredient to me and I was impressed. An applied Maillard reaction with brown sugar brought the French Toast a new level of yumminess. The Chantilly Cream took it over the top, not to sweet and very creamy. Yum!!! Also tried the "RASPBERRY TRUFFLE MOCHA St. George Vanilla Bean Vodka. Raspberry Liqueur, Callebaut Belgian Chocolate, Espresso, Steamed Milk, Chantilly Cream" . AMAZING!!! The Shorehouse Kitchen is a gem with fantastic food and service. My order of a Happy Hour Brewhouse Margarita ($6) arrived in a large simple glass, salted rim, too much ice, a slice of lime and orange, and some margarita mix, which was a bit light on alcoholic content. I found to be just right, all things considered. My solid food order was Happy Hour Chips & Dips ($4) which was a large tray supporting containers of good guacamole and tasty salsa, accompanied by a generous amount of fresh, warm corn chips. I have been coming here for years and have always been a fan of their delicious acai bowls! They are the best in La Jolla. At the beginning of the pandemic I was very impressed with the service and staff taking the proper precautions. However, in the past two weeks I have been extremely disappointed in the service and staff at this location. The women behind the counter putting food and drinks together are not wearing masks correctly. Their noses are sticking out of their masks and this renders the mask useless. The last time I was waiting on line to place my order a customer put his hand behind the glass counter where food is assembled. He reached over to grab a sugar packet and despite the staff seeing this, they did nothing to prevent him from doing so. The girl who works the register was not polite or friendly when we asked her why they allowed this or why they weren't wearing their masks correctly. I feel that the manager of this location is a very nice man and the staff used to be friendly and safe, but now they are acting rude and reckless with people's health. Not sure if I'll go back for a while due to these issues. read more

Brick & Bell in La Jolla Cove is a must-visit for me every year, and I make it a point to enjoy breakfast here daily during my trips. The pastries are absolutely amazing, fresh and bursting with flavor. The breakfast sandwiches are equally delicious, always hitting the spot with their perfect balance of ingredients. The staff is consistently kind and welcoming, creating a warm atmosphere that keeps me coming back. My only small suggestion is to clarify the line setup. One day, after waiting at the pastry counter for several minutes, I was told to join the line at the register, which put me behind folks who arrived later. A clearer system would make things smoother. Still, this place is a gem, and I can't wait to return next year! read more

I love stopping in at this little baked goods shop after hitting up the La Jolla gym. Although they have a very appealing glass case filled with fresh baked scones, cinnamon rolls, and cookies, I have yet to try! Don't think i'll be doing that so soon though as I try to be "Miss Healthy" ;) Actually, I always go in for their made-to-order protein shake smoothies. Mixed berries, vanilla protein powder, some soymilk and wah-lahh! Breakfast!!! The girls that work there are super nice! Long lines in the morning and obviously the prep time for a smoothie is a little longer than ordering up a coffee (which aren't too delicious in my opinion), but where else can you get a fresh berry protein shake in La Jolla besides your house??? read more

I used to go there all the time when my office was there. I miss it. That silly little building it's in and its patio create the feeling of a little Old World bakery shop. I really enjoyed the patio with little tables and little vines. You could people-watch without getting walked on (like so many so-called sidewalk cafes). Peter is always a delight to talk with and the coffee is always wonderful. Sandwiches are good, but not for those on a budget. read more

What a great breakfast/coffee nook! We were in town for the weekend and a friend suggested making a breakfast stop here. They have everything from sweet pastries to savory egg croissant sandwiches. The coffee is great too! They'll make you anything you can get at Starbucks, only better! It's a tight squeeze inside, but they have outdoor seating that is ample. The employees are super nice but for what I paid for my sandwich I feel that I got robbed and I could have made the sandwich myself. There are so many great sandwich places. They need more of an edge here like a specialty bread or something. I'm sure the coffee is good but I don't drink coffee. I just think that if your going to charge more than subway you should get the same amount. Am I right? or what. read more

My son and I had exquisite sandwiches here on Sunday afternoon. It set a good mood for our visit to the seal colonies. Best Coffee in La Jolla without a doubt. The only cafe to use Kean Coffee Roasters in San Diego Difficult to find that level of quality espresso around these parts... prob too expensive. A little crazy / busy at times... but worth the wait IMO. read more
