Stopped in today and was genuinely disappointed. The bakery case had a tray of cookies iced with "86 47" in red, white, and blue. I came in for a bite to eat, not a political statement. A cookie should be about a little bit of happiness. It is a small good thing in the middle of a busy day. Turning the dessert case into a place to push a divisive message, especially one that reads the way that one does, was off putting and frankly in poor taste. This is exactly the kind of casual normalizing of "get rid of him" rhetoric that has helped fuel a climate where there have already been multiple assassination attempts on the President. Words and images like this are not harmless, and a business should know better than to put them on display next to the brownies. I turned around and took my lunch business to another deli down the street, which is a shame because I wanted to like this place. If they want to sell food, sell food. I love this place for sandwiches on fresh baked bread. If you know you know. I went for the high protein tuna option but my husband got some version of a gourmet hot sandwich and it was incredible. Service is fast and they know their items. Soups are good and usually multiple offerings. The setting is a small cafe vibe where you might think you are in NY or europe and it's so charming. A lot of nostalgia here as I have been coming for 20 years plus. Please don't change a thing!!!! read more

I had high hopes for this bakery based on the reviews, but my experience was incredibly disappointing. Several items tasted stale, and one of the pastries seemed like it had been sitting out far too long. The entire bakery smelled like an 86 year old gym bag and all of the tables were dirty and sticky. The service was just as frustrating. Staff appeared uninterested in helping customers, had blue hair, and simple questions about the products were met with short, dismissive answers. Despite there being very few customers in the store, the wait was surprisingly long. To make matters worse, the prices were premium bakery prices, but the quality and service were nowhere near premium. There are plenty of other bakeries in the area that offer fresher products and a much better customer experience. Unfortunately, I won't be returning and can't recommend this bakery to others. read more

I've been coming here with my family ever since I was a kid. They have the best sandwiches and for very reasonable prices! I have fond memories of my sister and I looking at all the decorated cookies in the window. My go-to is their pate and salami sandwich. It's not explicitly on the menu but they'll make it for you! The sandwich is always loaded with pate and it's so delicious! There's so many other options on their menu as well; salads, soups, hot plates, pastries, cakes and they all look so good. It had mild smokey aftertaste. It was different at first but I enjoyed it and would get it again.b it balanced out the richness of the pate sandwich. What a nice surprise! Great deli right in the middle of all of the action in La Jolla. They show their pastries, meats and salads in glass cases. Everything looked fresh and delicious! Was hard to decide what to order because everything sounded so good. They offer 1/2 sandwiches which is great because they're a good size. We ordered 1/2 of a vegetarian and 1/2 of a roast beef sandwich and then a cup of the orzo salad. We split everything. Their whole grain bread is delicious! Both sandwiches were delicious and fresh. Great spot for the Bakery and Cafe here at Girard Gourmet. There was a line when we got here but it moved pretty quickly, they have many staff to take your orders. So many to choose from. I got the Chicken Curry Baguette, it has some cranberry that gave a hint of sweetness to it and it was actually good. As for the rest of the food, I let my wife choose them, she was overwhelmed by the selections that they have from Bakery items or Hot meals. Omg just the cutest little bakery I've ever seen!! My mom and I decided to stroll down San Diego, and as we were walking by we saw such a sweet display of all their cookies, tarts, and other pastries. After we stopped in, we thought maybe we should just skip the treat and continue walking.
