Can't believe I haven't reviewed the buckeye! Been going here for years, since childhood actually. I love it there. The atmosphere is stellar, the drunk Marin folks are awesome...it's fantastic. Oysters Bingo...if that's all you get you'll be happy. Had the prime rib last night, wasn't awesome, actually sent it back, but they were super cool about it. They only had 4 pieces left, so I kinda knew what I was getting into. It was super tough. They brought me a rib eye to replace it and it was AWESOME. The little twice baked potatoes were fantastic. They pour a stiff drink as well...can't argue with that. Go here for a good time and good food. read more

Starter: pan roasted artichokes with tarragon sauce. These baby veggies where sauteed quickly; roasted in the oven; then drizzled with a creamy tarragon sauce. Tasty. Main dish: sauteed halibut with assorted veggies and mash potatoes. All pieces of the fish were well prepared (neither over- or under-cooked). Generous portion. Large restaurant, so moderately noisy, but normal conversation level easily maintained. No views worth speaking of (unless you enjoy Hwy. 101!) but the interior is nicely decorated in a log cabin theme. Nice small cocktail bar downstairs. Ample parking (valet only). Good service. Very good American menu at reasonable prices. Could easily be induced to go again. read more

I love the Buckeye! My parents had their rehearsal dinner here some... 30 something years ago (clearly I wasn't around for that, but still). And it has had a special place in our lives sense. I went there with my now husband on our first date--it is where we established we both hate mushrooms and like sparkling water. Lovely venue and beautiful cuisine. The food her is elegantly presented and generous in portion without sacrificing quality for pretension. The ambiance was Devine and the food was better. We enjoyed a lovely seafood brunch complete with crab, prawn and oysters. The cocktail sauce was perfect. It wouldn't be the best atmosphere for kids and has a dress casual feel that's a little more laid back for brunch, but not for hoodies and tennies. Kids would be a little under welcomed. It's more about rich food and cocktails. Large parties of up to 50 can be accommodated upstairs. The staff is attentive. read more

This is one of my all-time favorite restaurants. The food is consistently great and the ambiance is special especially around the holidays.

In our recent visit the food was mediocre, the wine list was hugely overpriced, and the service was so-so. The sirloin steak at $31 was small and not particularly tasty. A pork chop was severely overdone. A dinner size salad was quite tasteless even thought the ingredients were fresh. The dressing just didn't do anything and seemed like it was out of the bottle. The wine list was quite poor with most wines well over $50. I think Buckeye is highly overrated. While the atmosphere is very pleasant the food leaves a lot to be desired. read more

Stopped here for lunch after visiting Muir Woods. The artichoke appetizer was one of the best I've had. Nice grill marks and super flavorful with the blistered lemon on it. Clean flavors and very tender. I followed that with the chicken sandwich and garlic fries. Totally solid choice and would have it again. Other dishes on menu and dessert menu were tempting, including burgers, scallops, ribs and salads. Friendly and accommodating service. read more

A few tips for coming to the Buckeye: 1. Sit at the bar. Full menu is available and the bartenders are super attentive. 2. If you decide you want to sit at a table, make sure you make reservations. If you don't, you'll be standing around the bar area for at least an hour. 3. Order the Oysters Bingo, even if you are not hungry. You can thank me later. 4. Valet your car. The risk to your life you have to take running across the road with a million cars roaring by is not worth it. 5. Don't be afraid to ask for recommendations. 6. I've dined in the bar and in the main restaurant and both offer different experiences, as one might expect, but there's no question both provide a quality dining experience. You can't go wrong with dishes like the Chili-Lime "Brick" Chicken with stuffed pasilla chili and Avocado Salsa, the Petit Filet Mignon with Green Peppercorn Sauce, Sauted Spinach and Gruyre Potato Gratin or the Mongolian Spiced Pork Chop with Apple-Apricot Chutney and Curried Mashed Potatoes. I got a $150 gift card to this place, which originally excited me, but after a lackluster meal I'm just happy I didn't spend my own money. First of all, the ambiance was weird. It's a pretty place, if not a little generic looking. The problem was that it was so loud we could barely hear each other (we're in our 30s so we're not losing our hearing, FWIW). The staff were perfectly sweet but given that neither of us touched our food I was expecting more concern over our experience. That said, the cocktails and the oyster's bingo were AMAZING. Next time I'll go just to sit at the bar. My husband got a cucumber gimlet and I got a Peruvian violet. Both delicious, we each got two. For our mains we got the brisket and the duck. The duck was inedible. It tasted like bland turkey and the gnocchi huckleberry combo just tasted like someone smeared jam on a potato. I took one bite and threw the rest away (which, if you knew me, you would realize is completely out of character - the food was that bad). My husband's brisket was fine, at least the mashed potatoes that came with it were delicious. The gravy was nothing special. For dessert he got the butterscotch creme brulee, which he loved. I thought it tasted a little burnt. I got the coconut cream pie, which was pie, so, you know, good. But all in all, I could have gotten this food at a diner and been underwhelmed. So I definitely won't be going back to shell out $150 for dinner, but I might sneak up to the bar for another drink. read more

My family was visiting from Norway, I have always wanted to eat at The Buckeye but the price is more than Can afford as I am on a very fixed income. My family wanted to treat me for my 70th BD and asked me to pick ANY restaurant. I was so happy and couldn't wait to have a very special meal at The Buckeye. I was very disappointed with my fillet of sole, it did not taste fresh, it was limp and flavorless. My choice of dessert was also disappointing, I chose the apple galette, very plain, doughy crust, presentation very plain for such a fine restaurant. Needless to say, my family was very pleased with their choices, lamb shank, hamburger and chicken for the children and a delicious Organic butter lettuce salad. We also had the Oysters bingo which was delicious but way overpriced, The other deserts, key lime pie, s'mores and chocolate caramel tart, were all very good. Our waiter was "sour", very reserved not friendly at all, service "OK". I should have ordered what initially wanted wanted, baby back ribs. The atmosphere in the dining area was warm and cozy. Maybe one day I will have the opportunity to come back and try the baby back ribs. read more

As a vegetarian, I am used to having limited options when I dine out with family and friends, it is something I've accepted. But there are always those side dishes and apps that you can throw together into a meal, or maybe they're willing to make you some pasta with veggies. Either way, you'll end up with some food on your plate. So we came here this weekend to celebrate my brother's birthday, and I was more than a little disappointed. Yes, I know it's a steak house, but here is a warning if you plan to bring any veggie friends here. I ended up with a mushroom thing that tasted more like meat than anything I've ever tasted. I even had everyone else at the table taste is to make sure it wasn't meat. they were undecided so i left the rest of it untouched. Then the side veggies, while tasty at first, they were so rich it quickly became disgusting. the two things I really did enjoy were my salad and desert, both which were delicious, although nothing out of the ordinary (just what you would expect when paying that much money) Everyone else at the table really enjoyed their food, so I guess they can cook their steak and fish just fine. Other than that it was a nice place to sit, not too loud inside and a decent wine selection. The only thing I would have changed was our jumpy waiter. I want to be nice to him because it seemed like it was maybe his first night serving in an upscale restaurant, but it takes a lot for me to notice the waiter isn't doing what they're supposed to. read more

Outstanding service from a guy with a French accent - a true professional waiter which is rare in this day and age. Guess we need to import them now. Wonder if there's an H1B visa for that? I digress. Filet was significantly overcooked - medium well, not medium rare. Two at the table rejected the chicken pot pie, but as a leftover I thought it was pretty good. Raves all around for the scallops and the key lime pie. If you're looking for a quiet meal, ask not to be seated upstairs with the kids and large parties - it can be pretty loud. read more

The wife and I joined Dr. Loud for dinner last night at the Buckeye. We chose a booth in the properly lighted, cozy bar - which is, for me, really the only way to go. At about 9:30 the scene was extrememly lively and the bartenders were busy. It is always a sophisticated yet comfortable scene. We started out with three martinis, each of us special ordering to our tastes. I had the Stoli, the Doctor had Chopin and Jessica had a Grey Goose, dirty. Delicious. We then snacked on the roasted artichoke with aoli, a small but tasty morsel. For dinner, I had the brisket, which comes piled on a toasted slice of bread, and is served with a creamy horseradich sauce and a side of mashed potatoes. This is one of the most reliable items on the menu. It was, as always, excellent. Jessica had the petit filet. I snagged the last bite which she could not finish and was glad I did. It was succulent and cooked to a perfect medium rare. The Doctor had the lamb shank with couscous, his favorite dish. I've had it in the past and can vouch for it as well. These dishes were paired with a decent but unremarkable pinot noir from Oregon. We eschewed desert, though I was eyeing the chocolate sundae. We lingered over the last of the wine and got our check. Honestly: the place ain't cheap, but quality rarely is. All in all, it was just another terrific night at the Buckeye. We will be returning soon. read more

Had brunch/lunch here on 12/21 with some friends....First off, the place was decorated for Christmas and looked Fantastic! Next, the food was over the top good. Most of us ordered the duck hash. Might be my favorite brunch dish ever. My wife ordered the salmon tartar...which she loved. K.C. Jones Streamliner (white wine blend) was on the wine menu and we Had to have it (we know Kelley, and her wines are tasting fantastic). If you haven't been to the Buckeye recently...go. Chef Robert Price continues to make this place (and his two other restaurants) destination points for food, wine, atmosphere.....you can't go wrong. read more

Forgetting the out of the way nature and difficuly in getting to the place, even though you can see it from the freeway, there are some problems with the business: The menu looked great, prices for what was offered were a littly pricey, but if well prepared they would be worth it. But the proof is in the tasting and that's where the wheels came off. I ordered the lamb shank and my husband the sole. The lamb shank was clearly from the previous day and re-heated, at best it was from lunch and left out way too long; dry and lacking flavor. The fish was cooked and very tasty but only two tiny little pieces; with sole two pieces is more like an appetizer than a meal. There are better places in the area that give you much better value at more reasonable prices. We were truly disappointed, we were expecting much more. read more

This was my first trip to the bay area. Buckeye Roadhouse was rated high by some and it seemed to have a beautiful atmosphere and great menu. Boy, was I in for a surprise. Yes, the scenery was great and the wait staff was OK...but this was some of the nastiest food my family has ever eaten. My daughter's well-done steak was bleeding. We sent it back. It came back bleeding a little less, but very tough and tasteless. My husband's mushroom soup was bland and muddy. His kale salad reminded me of a brick on his plate. My own salad was the best of the food we ordered but not memorable, that's for sure. My other daughter simply asked them to make a vanilla shake. I think she got the best end of the deal. I am going to say that the fried calamari at Buckeye Roadhouse was the most sickening. It was literally an octopus on the plate. Along with looking nasty, it was tough and rubbery. I do not recommend this restaurant and seriously believe the building should be changed to a museum or something. Food is not their specialty. read more

ok, first off Houston's chain has better food. yes, i love the oyster Bingo and the ribs are pretty good when not too dry, onion rings are ok etc. But for a one-off restaurant the menu is completely uninspired. i have never been, but i would expect to see a similar set of offerings at outhouse steakback down the street. 2 stars for food. secondly, their wine list is priced like a NYC tourist trap, way too close to Napa/Sonoma to be this expensive! 1 star for wine list. Q: so why the 4 stars? A: because i don't go for the food. The main room is great, it reminds me of when i was a wide eyed kid, being treated to dinner by my grandparents. And the bar is the most enjoyable eating room in Southern Marin, Great bar staff makes great drinks, red mafia booths, updated vintage decor. it helps me forget about how good the food could be and i start to deeply relax and watch the cougars play. read more

OK, I don't hand out 5 stars wantonly, but this time I just have to make an exception. After a nice long Sunday morning hike on Mt Tam, there's nothing like a great brunch to make all well in the world. Despite a lack of reservations, this large, tasteful restaurant right by 101 in Mill Valley was able to accomodate our party of four at prime brunch-hour last Sunday. Our waiter was not only friendly, but beyond accomodating. To any special request or need that we expressed, the answer was invariably "no problem". No "I need to check on that" or "I might have to charge you extra for that"...just "no problem". We left him a 25% tip! The food was all exceptional - the spicy beef hash, the huevos rancheros with stuffed peppers, and the brioche french toast with bananas and berries...all outstanding. It's so rare to find a restaurant with both excellent food and great service, but the Buckeye Roadhouse fits the bill! read more

This place is a mixed bag. Depending on when you come, the service and food can be exceptional or poor. After several lunch and dinner experiences, I've got to say, this is not on my A-list. Dinner last was aggravating. We had 8pm reservations for three people, showed up at 7:58..and it took them 25 minutes to seat us. Our salad came reasonably quickly, but dinner itself took 45 minutes to arrive. One plate had stone-cold potatoes, two out of three steaks were rare, rather than medium rare. On the plus side, the staff did bring hot potatoes when we asked. So it took us well over an hour to get our dinner, after arriving on time, and there were problems with each serving. For $30 per entree, I expect better. I have to admit, I've had excellent lunches there during the week, where everything was prepared perfectly, and we got seated promptly. Clearly, Saturday nights are to be avoided. More general comments...menu choices are great, and the wine list is excellent. Presentations are very good, the ambience is warm and relaxing, they've gone to some effort to manage the sound level with well-concealed acoustic tiling on the ceiling of the main dining room. The waiters and staff are likable and well-trained. But my sense is that the restaurant is managed a little too tightly, for maximum profit. I've never had to wait 20 minutes for a reservation anywhere else before, and when a wait was necessary, the restaurant staff would be apologetic and bought us a round of drinks. Not at Buckeye. My experience is that I have to wait for my reservation more often than not, and that is simply caused by over-allocating the tables. I don't feel respected or welcomed when I have to sit in a drafty entrance hall for more than 20 minutes, even if I do like the staff, the building, and my dinner partners. One trick to making the evening easier is to park in the Manzanita parking lot across the street. Part of the lot is very close, just be careful when you cross the road, which is a freeway on-ramp. Manzanita also makes it easy to leave without getting onto 101-south. And plan on taking your time. Don't come here if you have to be somewhere afterwards. read more

Came back for another visit. The Boys had the Ribs. They really liked them and gave them 8 out of 10. The Calamari with Tomatillo Sauce was really tasty thanks to the Tomatillo Sauce. Great combination. Be sure to ask for extra sauce. The English Pea Lasagna was well received and very tasty. The Linguine with Clams & Andouille Sausage was so-so. I wish I had ordered the Lasagna. The Butterscotch Creme Brulee was good. The "famous" Marin S'mores Desert was so-so. Overall, another good meal at the Buckeye. read more

Normally I LOVE the Buckeye and would give it a 5... But this last experience really left a sour taste in my mouth. It was Valentines Day and normally we go to the Buckeye for dinner, but decided to try something different and do Brunch. We had made a reservation about 4 months in advance so I thought that would be enough time to guarantee us a decent spot... It seemed like they took one look at us (we're a young-er couple) assumed we wouldn't notice, and tucked us upstairs directly next to the kitchen door. Not only were we in the extremely hot upstairs (next to the kitchen), we were also seated at the ONE table that was hit directly by the sun - we ended up wearing our sunglasses the entire meal - however that wasn't even the worst part!!! We were surrounded by loud children, it seems as though they save the upstairs for tucking the families with kids away... strange they decided a 25 year old couple on a valentines day date would fit in there :-/ Besides for the hot air, the direct sun, the loud kids, the busy aisle next to the kitchen - the food was AMAZING (as always) - we ordered the oysters bingo, the eggs Benedict and duck hash... all 3 were to die for. I would never suggest that someone NOT go to the Buckeye... but I WOULD suggest that when you make a reservation, be sure to specify that you would like to sit downstairs... or even in the bar! Especially for Brunch - there are definitely more children there during the day for brunch rather then at dinner. read more

The comfort and class of The Buckeye is timeless. It is truly dining as it should be. We enjoyed a cocktail at the bar, and when our table was ready we were ready too. :-) The waiter (Chick) was attentive, but not hovering. Looking around you can see that all the dining room staff are professionals. Chick described our menu choices and recommended them with confidence. We shared a perfect portion of Polenta ... just enough appetizer not to spoil our appetites. The Lime Brick Chicken was tender and moist. It, too, came with Polenta sticks (no complaint here) and veggies. The ribs, are not pre-boiled; rather they are slow roasted and smokey flavored. It took only a slight bit of pull to coax the meat off the bone. The side was a creamy cheddar cheese grits, and picnic-perfect cole slaw. Cool and crispy! We had a cup of post-dinner coffee, and tawk, you know... coffee tawk. We didn't want to camp out on the table, but we never felt rushed or pressure to move along. The coffee was sooooo good. It's been several years since we've dined at the Buckeye, and I can't understand why because we had an EXCELLENT meal! Started with the Portobello Tart and Calamari apps, both very tasty. I had the succulent pork chop, my wife had the duck, and my daughter, being a vegetarian, requested a plate of the most interesting looking sides, and they didn't disappoint either. For dessert our spot on and good-humored waiter suggested the lemon custard, but we opted for the coconut cream pie - a great choice. And, a good selection of wines by the glass. Pros: Excellent, fast service. Good quality food. Good-sized menu (not too big, not too small). Clean establishment and facilities. Priced better than we thought it would be. Good selection of wine and other beverages. Cons: Our s'more pie needed more chocolate. It was primarily marshmallow topping and graham cracker crust. Valet didn't come around to our car when we pulled up, so we ended up parking in the park & ride across the street. Made reservations a month in advance for our anniversary, and the ambience was not quite what I expected- less "nice date night" and more "let's go for drinks after work." Also, I wasn't thrilled at first with the location of our table, but once I saw how packed it gets, I started to think our tiny corner table a foot away from another couple wasn't quite so bad. All in all, I might go back for the food and the service, but probably not for a special occasion. read more
