Am I glad Yelp told me about oysters bingo.....wonderful! Kind of reminds me of oysters Rockefeller, but Buckeye uses Aoli sauce. The restaurant was packed on a Tuesday night, but we did have reservations. Our knowledgeable server brought us fabulous drinks from the full bar, then told us about the specials. I was disappointed in the butter lettuce salad as it had very little walnuts (finely chopped), and little blue cheese. My husband had the salmon tartare and it was excellent. I love lamb shank. This one was fragrant and delicious. After dinner I had the grand cafe coffee drink, excellent. We shared a dessert that you must try; chocolate bread pudding with creme anglias and hazelnuts. Not at all what you would expect a bread pudding to be, creamy and terrific. I'll be back! read more

The Drinks are the only thing this place has going for it. My husband and I went there because of all the great reviews on yelp and foodnetwork and it is pretty pricey so you think you would get your moneys worth. Unfortunately, we did not. We got horrible service. we waited 15 minutes after we got seated just to order our drinks. Another 10 minutes after that to we even order our food. Our server never made eye-contact and even when he came to clear plates he didn't ask if we needed anything. I had to stop him and ask him to bring us waters before he ran off. I said thank you multiple times and I all I ever got back was "uh-huh". For a high-end restaurant you think at least the food would be great. it wasn't all that great. it was all mediocre. We were very disappointed in this place. We even called ahead to make a reservation, they told us it was all open seating "patio, dinning and the bar are all open" she said. When we got there we wanted to sit on the patio and they told us it was closed. Either keep your staff informed or don't promise something you can't give. The Buckeye is a great place to go for both comfort food and California fusion. It is a bit on the pricey side, but all of their food is perfectly executed. Our favorite appetizers are the oysters bingo, onion rings, pan grilled artichoke, and calamari. It is a bit on the loud side, but still manages to be cozy. Their cocktails are delicious! read more

Everyone's raving about their fish and seafood dishes. *scratches head* We are at a steakhouse, no?!? I've gobbled through a filet mignon and a rib-eye and dug into companions' dishes: scallops w/piquillo pepper risotto like whoa, sole w/green beans and of course, the infamous oysters. The win: Filet Mignon: A hit Scallops: A bigger hit. The accompanying risotto: Double win. Sole: Perfect, but less exciting to my palate. Oysters: The rare occasion I splurge on a mouthful of cheesey-butteryness, but it happened. I restrained from eating more. So good. Comes with 6 baked oysters. and the miss: Rib-Eye. Meh. Please spare me next time. The crispy brussels sprouts and potatoes accompanying my steak were incredible, thankfully, but the steak was more fat than meat. No joke. It was disgusting. This was beyond marbling. Inedible. Bottom line: Classy log cabin vibe, minus taxonomy on the walls. Solid beverages. Excellent fish and seafood dishes. All dishes cooked to order. The only reason this restaurant isn't perfect is because it's a little on the expensive side. But as I often like to do when I'm at a restaurant for the first time (or am otherwise dealing with a new menu), I asked the waiter to help me decide between a couple of items-- in this case it was the pork chop of the skirt steak. We chatted for a good minute before he told me that I really wouldn't be able to get a pork chop like theirs anywhere else, which sold me on the deal. He was absolutely right. The chop was incredibly flavorful and also impressively moist, though I found the apricot chutney a little strong in the volume that they served it-- it was easily removed. I also swapped out the mashed potatoes for the garlic fries, and this was the first time that I felt as happy with garlic fries anywhere that wasn't the Giants stadium-- in fact, they may have been even better. The garlic fries at the Giants stadium are a bit inconsistant; this had less garlic overall, but they were very crisp and still pretty strong. (By contrast, the garlic fries at Pearl's Phatburgers are really spicy-- which isn't bad but not my thing --and the fries at the Broken Drum were just okay.) My boyfriend had the duck, which was also very tasty. Bit of an expensive meal, but well worth it...every once in a while! I also felt a bit underdressed at first (we were coming from unloading a giant cargo van of furniture), but when I looked around after a bit I saw a few other people wearing t-shirts and the like, so I guess I was okay. read more

I came for brunch w/ two of the girlfriends for a bday celebration. Of course, we're on the down low w/ the bday thing, since we're a shade over 29. No requests for candles and off-key singing, we prefer more champagne and all things savory. Decor was not totally my cup of tea but was well done. Service was friendly and efficient. I was quite happy w/ the food. I had the grilled salmon salad and it was perfectly grilled and seasoned. The gals were quite happy w/ their egg benedicts. We head outside to get our cars and the valet guy looks at us and says, "Saab and Lexis right?" My friend laughs and says, "right!" sarcastically, because indeed, we are Acura and Volkswagen gals. The valet started sprinting off so we had to quickly let him in on the joke. Which he seemed to miss the humor of, but no stars off for that. read more

I actually came here twice in one week! I think its a nice spot off on its own in Mill Valley. It looks like a giant house next to the freeway. I came here for lunch for a work event. I decided to go for something light and went with the Seared Ahi Tuna Sandwich. It was very good! I don't think I've had, or wanted to have a raw fish as a sandwich but it worked out very nicely. It was definitely fresh and tasty. The next time I came here was at the end of the week for dinner. The place gets really busy and loud, but the ambiance is very charming and comfortable. I feel like a place called the buckeye, I had to roll with a steak. The options were amazing, but instead of the petit filet (wasn't down for petit anything), I opted for the grilled rib-eye. great choice! it had a lot of flavor and was very juicy! We brought our own bottle and the corkage fee is $25, but it was worth it for our group. Nice spot out in the North Bay if you guys are coming back home from a trip to wine country. read more

ok this place is History. Its been here forever and its just as popular as it was 50 years ago...You know why? Excellent food, fantastic service. Yes its pricey, but ITS MARIN so its kinda not. The Oysters Bingo will melt in your mouth. The Brick Chicken is to die for, but the Crab Cakes Benedict will make you cry, they're so good! I like to eat in the bar. Its super cozy, and big huge booths that will comfortably sit 6. The main dining room has a huge fireplace. For rainy nights, this place is amazing. Hell for nice nights too. OK this place is a great find thanks to Melanie N. Andrei Z, Chia and I were making our way back to SF from competing at the Rock, Paper, Scissor championships (i was disqualified!) at Roshambo Winery and needing some meat. Buckeye is right off the 101 so it's easy to get to and there wasn't a wait at all on Saturday night when we arrived which was a bit of a surprise, but of course a pleasant one. We got the oysters bingo as one of our appetizers and they were so delish. Pretty cheesy so of course how can you not love em. For our main courses we all got steaks and shared between us so we could try them all. They were all cooked medium-rare as we requested and the meats were tender and spiced perfectly. Dessert was also a perfect finish to the evening, and if I wasn't still hurting from the RPS tourney, I'd write in more detail! read more

I went for a lunch meeting here and the service was very nice. The place is upscale - men had jackets and ties and women were in nice clothing. Luckily, I was in my work clothes, so not so shabby. My salad was good. Though, I can't comment much on other food except the place and waiter made me feel important. I enjoyed my lunch meeting. Valet parking - be prepared to have cash to tip the guy. We had a great lunch here. The service is very professional and attentive. When we walk in, we wanted to know what smelled so great. The host told us they smoke their own meat. I was planning on having a salad before I got there, but was happy to change my mind and try the ribs. We asked whether the fries were small or large. Been here a few times with my guy. Last Sunday was *epic* because .. We got a spot at the bar closest to the TV for the Niners/Packers game! Woo! Although fancy dining is quite nice here, we always prefer to stay at the bar. (Keep it low key) We always start with a few apps (wings & the seared ahi tuna are my fave). As for the entree, I'm not a steak/ribs kind of girl so I always prefer their seafood. Scallops, Salmon are always my go - to meal. (4.5 stars) Too bad they don't serve fried chicken or creole. I can eat that all day. Ha. Super friendly staff, less wait (if you make reservations of course), free valet parking, amazing location and over - all.. Great food. What you waiting for?! Yes yes it's all they say it is. Old school decor and service, consistent food, and quite delicious. The room is a beautiful sight. From the wood paneling to the long window panes, a grand hearth and many round tables, feels like the living room of an estate somewhere in Europe. There is an upstairs too. Think of it as the library. The service is efficient and the servers knowledgeable and not too chummy. From the fresh briny oysters and champagne to the smoked ribs, there wasn't anything to complain about. I had too the wedge salad with the blue cheese and requisite bacon along with the salmon atop purple chewy rice. Delicious and plentiful and not contrived. We had dessert too. And I can't remember what. So clearly not too memorable; the restaurant is an institution for a reason. The said boyfriend and I went to celebrate what? Getting along this week? I don't know. Just happy to be with him in a nice space eating yummy fare. You'll not find a hip young crowd here. The well-heeled Marinites of a certain age come and have been coming forever. My family would frequent Vanessi's in the city for a similar experience. Reminded me of that. Fond memories. There are many choices of where to dine. We just had a really leisurely lazy Sunday lunch/early dinner (aka Linner) there today. Gorgeous weather (crisp fall day with the leaves changing color), great drinks (from the Buckeye Metropolitan to the latte at the end), beautiful interior and exterior, easy, free parking, lovely atmosphere and music (nice selection of swing and jazz), GREAT service (shout out to Mike, our waiter, who we will definitely ask for next time) very attentive, not at all pushy and didn't rush us (we were there like 2 1/2 hours or so), and the food was just HEAVEN!!! RECOMMEND HIGHLY: cocktails (great bar there you can hang at if you are waiting for your table), oysters bingo (I literally thought long and hard about ordering another round of these for DESSERT!), crab cakes - one of the best I've ever had, coffee encrusted rib-eye, fillet mignon and potato gratin, and to top it all off....the s'mores pie (the almonds put it over the top). Went for brunch today, and *loved* this place. The Oysters Bingo (silly name, great appetizer) were most excellent, and my sunny side up eggs with hash browns and short ribs were awesome. My friend's ahi tuna benedict with polenta was pretty awesome too. What put the place over the top (star wise) was the service. Yeah, the regular food service was good. Everything came promptly, everyone was attentive, etc. The thing was, today I was one of the those PITA type customers: when we got to the restaurant, we were promptly seated. When we saw there was an outdoor patio, we asked if we could sit out there, and were immediately accommodated. Well, as great as the patio was (and it is great -- would definitely sit out there for dinner), about half way through our meal, we were attacked by some bees, and asked to be moved back inside. And, for the second time, our request to move was promptly accommodated. Anyway, the food is great, the service is great, the bill was lower than I'd expected. I've been coming to this restaurant regularly for over 3 years, and we keep coming back primarily becasue of the fabulous bar manager named SETH, who unlike many idiots in the restaurant business, "gets" regulars and how to treat them. He always greets us with a handshake and readily pours our drinks within 30 seconds of sitting down. Sounds simple but let me telly you the vast majority of all servers DO NOT GET THIS FUNDAMENTAL SIMPLE professional courtesy. In any event he sets the stage to what is always a fabulous lunch. I've had almost everything on the menu: porkchop, salads, tacos, the unbelieveable burger, flank steak etc etc and the food is excellent and delicious all of the time. There are usually 2 of us but sometimes the group grows to 3 or 4 and we have met many of the regulars who frequent this place. Oh and by the way for the individuals who commented that this place is too "white" well let me tell you I am NOT white and often I am the only non-white in the entire bar area but who the hell cares get over it - for the most part everyone is super nice and we have gotten to know most of the regulars. Sure there are the occasional cougers and tacky couples making out at the bar but they are few and far between. Peter (one of the owners) runs a great restaurant and it is consistently one of my favorites - atmosphere, service and food - among the best in all the bay area so 5 stars all the way! read more

My boyfriend and I ate here for Valentines day 2010 and OMG it was so amazing. We saw it on Check Please Bay Area months before and thought VDay would be a good excuse to drive up from the South Bay. The food was so tasty and presented in a really upscale way, but the ambiance is very lodge-like and homey. Parking is odd, and playing frogger back to the lot in heels was tricky, but totally worth it. We started with a polenta, mushroom, balsamic reduction appetizer. So random but the flavor and consistancy were amazing. For my entree I had the BBQ brisket, which I've never ordered before but love BBQ sauce and this didn't disapoint. My boyfriend had the filet with veggies and the steak had a great salty crust and was very tender inside and the veggies were crisp and well-seasoned. I wish I'd left room for desert. I went to the Buckeye Roadhouse on a date and was impressed! Our table was upstairs in the corner, which was nice, but there is huge fireplace down stairs that I would have preferred to sit by. The upstairs corner table was a little drafty. I use to eat here growing up during crab season and always looked forward to the annual trip. I am happy to report that they still have a pan-roasted artichoke! It is amazing! The bingo oysters were delicious both great appetizer selections!! I ordered 1/2 a crab and was surprised how manageable it was! The sauce was on the side and it was pre cracked perfect. Needless to say I did not make a mess of myself. It was served with purple rice that resembled bland rice pudding I hated it! The cocktails are great!! I had the cucumber gimlet I highly recommend it! Very light and clean tasting from the infused cucumbers and Champaign. If you are a lightweight only order one, they are super strong! Great date place if you want to impress. read more

I love this place. My wife and I used to eat here for special occasions when we lived in San Francisco. Everything was sooo good! The atmosphere is essentially an upper class lodge type of feel, which really works for the place. I recommend the Oysters Bing... very yummy. All of the meat dishes are soooo good. Ah, the Buckeye. I have a soft spot in my heart for this little Marin staple. In my first Bay Area life, our crew used to stop at the Buckeye when headed back to the city after our trips north hiking, camping or just generally making merry outside. We'd come in all sweaty and dirty and sit at the bar eating oysters, drinking grapefruit cocktails and having fun. Wonderful memories of good times and good food. When we moved back and actually started living near the place, my man and I were pretty excited to return, although we were somewhat apprehensive. What if it wasn't the same? What if it had gone downhill? Oh no! I can't believe we even worried about it. It was terrific: same great food, same great time (even with our crew's expanding brood of children). An enduring testament to classic recipes and an accessible, laid back approach to dining. This morning, I noticed that the Buckeye had a little coffee stand for morning commuters. I stopped on my way into city and was impressed to see lots of fun little goodies and various hot beverages. I attempted to buy a small black coffee to top off my overly milky home brew [bleh], but after seeing how little I needed the lady gave me the coffee for free. So sweet! [Of course, this only prompted me to buy something else and give her the coffee money as a tip (you never really overcome the lessons you learn as a server), but the casual kindness (and, turns out, pretty good cup of joe) really made a difference in my day.] read more

We began with an order of onion rings for the table, and I'm glad that we did: those were the best onion rings I'd had in ages. My main dish -- sole with tiny potatoes and museum-quality french green beans -- was quite fine. It was listed on the menu for $20.75, which gives you an idea of the the price level here. What ends up on your plate is basically high-end comfort food, cooked with perfect competence but no great inspiration. The 4-star average strikes me as right on. read more

Went here with several other people on a busy night. Tables were all full and everyone was having a great time from a general scan of the room. We had a great bottle of wine and some other strong drinks and the appetizers were pretty good too. However, the evening was bruised a bit when one of the steaks my friend ordered came out almost fresh off the cow after a request to have it cooked to medium "done-ness." They took it back and brought out another one that was WAY too cooked. Here's hoping that the third time would be the charm right? They brought one out that was once again not cooked even close to enough. There were lots of "sorrys" and "sincerest apologies" but the bill didn't reflect that and even included an extra item that we did not order or eat. Seems to me they made a "mis-steak" here at the Buckeye. Hopefully next time will be better. read more

The waiter came to our table so casually with no introduction that we thought he was a busboy. I ordered the pork chop, which was perfectly cooked but the sauce was a little sweet and strong, the farrolito tasted like a farro rissoto. It was a little rich and cheesy for my liking but probably yummy for others. The greens were good. My husband had the brisket. He asked if it was fatty and was told no but half of it was fat. The sauce was syrupy and the flavor was very average like a store bought BBQ sauce. The horseradish potatoes were really good. We shared a Ceasar salad. It was cold and crispy but had no flavor. Tonight was our 30th Anniversary and we were looking forward to an excellent meal It is now our 31st anniversary dinner. Tonight's experience was soooo much better than last time. Our waiter was so professional and nice. The Ceasar salad was cold and delicious and I loved that they crumbled the croutons then you can get a little in every bite and not puncture the roof of your mouth with a sharp crouton corner. My husband had the brick chicken and was please with everything on the plate. We were happy that nothing was too salty this time. I had the salmon. Last time I had it it was raw in the middle. I told the waiter and asked if that is how it usually comes because I don't want it raw. He asked me if I would like it well done? I said no salmon should just be done to the correct temp. When my salmon came it was delivered by someone else and they told me they had the medium-well salmon and it was just that, A little too done. Disappointing but it was still good but could have been perfect. Not salty just right. I ended the night with a cup of decaf. Oh my gosh I was in heaven!!!!!! I like my drinks hot and they heat up the mug and it came piping hot and stayed hot even after I poured my cream and sugar in it. I have never had the extra touch before. I could get used to that!!! Decided to try Buckeye Roadhouse after reading the great yelp reviews - so glad that we did!! A group of us went to Buckeye for lunch on the way to SFO. I was amazed at how many people were lining up before the restaurant even opened. I was lucky enough to have called in and made a reservation online before arriving that Saturday afternoon. The food was absolutely delicious. My husband had the pulled pork sandwich with the bbq chips and he loved both things. I ended up getting the crispy Petaluma chicken with mashed potatoes and it was super yummy! For desert the husband and I shared the smores pie and it was heavenly. We will definitely be returning to the Buckeye anytime we are in the area. read more

What a delicious mistake! We had navigated all over the hillside of Sausalito trying to make our way to Avatar's (bad map) only to find that it was closed. :( So on our way, we had noticed this Buckeye Roadhouse place and the GRIP of people parked there. Hoping it wasn't some cheesy tourist trap, we made our way back over there. Best unplanned restaurant trip I have ever made. Right off the top, it was jam packed busy. Probably a good sign, huh, but most prob a long wait too, we thought. We were seated in 10 minutes (at like 7 pm on a Sunday). Perfecto! We were impressed and suprised again and again as each dish was brought out. Really the best new place I have eaten at in a long long time. The pan seared artichokes were excellent and are now my personal fave way to make artichokes at home. We had been looking at the fields of artichokes on the way up here, so those really hit the spot. They are served with a tarragon dipping sauce that it just incredible! The calamari was also perfectly prepared-crispy yet tender, with a lemony salsa. I had the blue cheese wedge salad for my meal, and my husband the ribeye steak. The salad was good...but the blue cheese on top was the BEST! creamy, sweet, salty, tangy...OMG. The ribeye was a nice quality cut, generous portion and cooked a little less than the medium-rare ordered. No biggie. I do like the way they serve it sliced in half, so immediately you can see if the steak is cooked to your liking. No guessing or calling the server back. Very smart. The steak came with little blue cheese filled new potatoes. They were ok-a little too heavy on the green onion-it dominated the flavor. Being as that we weren't familiar with this place, we ordered a chocolate bread pudding to go (instead of that totally friggin awesome looking smore pie deal) and it was pretty forgettable. I would give this place 5 stars as I have never had a meal short of scrumptious here and the service is amazing, except for one, glaring thing: The last two times my BF and I have eaten here, the smell wafting up from the vent behind us was disgusting. It seriously smelled like a port-o-potty. Maybe no one noticed it because it wasn't overpowering, but it was definitely noticeable when sitting down. We thought maybe we were going crazy, but we had the same experience twice. It's really tough to enjoy your steak when you get the smell of poo wafting past your nostrils. We didn't complain at the time, but realized that they may have a serious septic or sewer problem, so we called in to warn them and got the total run around before they hung up on us entirely. Came here for lunch. We had the bingo oysters as an appetizer which was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! my boyfriend had the lamb shank and I had the pork chop which were both very delicious. For dessert he had espresso and we shared their famous s'mores pie (I saw it on food network so I had to make a visit here the next time I was in the area). The service was kind, very friendly staff. Ambiance is cozy with a lovely fireplace to warm up to. Bathrooms are tiny. There is only a valet service ($3 after 4pm) no self parking) I will definitely come back here for dinner. read more

I've been here a few times, and each time I have not been disappointed. I really like the s'more pie...but really, how can you go wrong there. Aside from that, the last time we visited we came for brunch and I had the benedict but instead of english muffins, it was served on biscuits. So delightful, and a decadent way to enjoy the dish. I would totally have that again. Also, we had the beignets--also tasty. we sat near the fireplace so it was really toasty, a little too toasty at times though. Nice big space with good food and good service. There are not that many meat/salad/pasta places in Marin, so this fills a niche.

The outdoor seating was disappointing. We are 77 and 71 and they seated us in an "uncovered open to the outside table" while others sat in enclosed plastic! Very cold!!! I had to wear my coat. Beware and request not to be seated in this location if you want to be warm. Why do restaurants seat woman in the most undesirable locations? We requested to be seated at another small table but we were told there was no heaters. Toward the end of our meal the restaurant seated 2 people at the table we requested and took out additional heaters. On a positive note the wait staff and service was excellent. read more

If you've ever wondered why the Buckeye is ALWAYS packed - it's because the food and the atmosphere are both scrumpdiddily-umptious! The bar is definitely the place to hang - and eat dinner. The booths are super cozy and give you a sicky people watching spot. You may have to wait 30 - 40 minutes - but grab some vino or a beer (a tall one) and stand around and get hungry. There aren't a whole lot of places in Marin that have bars and cater to a diverse age range of people - the Buckeye - along with Picco, Frantoio and Bungalow 44 are the exceptions. The smoked chicken wings are delish - and are somewhat addictive. Every time Parry orders them I think I'll have "one or two". Not the case. Ever. It's more like 10. When it comes to the entree there are slews of things I'd recommend - the beef stew, the mussels w/linguine, the burger, the salmon - all meals I find myself discussing the next day. The wait staff is typically awesome too. Once we had a woman who was trying to rush us out - but usually its smooth sailing for diners who want to take their time eating. If you let them know you want to take your time - they respect that... The last time we were there the dessert was homemade chocolate ice cream, with homemade butterscotch and homemade whipped cream.
