My food is delivered and I eat some of it and can tell something isn't right. The spring roll that comes in the Bun tastes like meat. I call Bun Mee and they say oh yeah the Bun with Tofu has pork in it as well as fish sauce. I tell them it says on Door Dash that it's vegan. I also explain I've been vegan for 18 years and it is against my religion to eat pork. And for some people with severe seafood allergies fish sauce can be triggering. I was craving spring rolls and Vietnamese food in general (as always) and found this spot on Filmore. I ordered the following items: - shrimp and pork spring rolls - Salt and pepper french fries - side order of chicken broth only Shrimp and pork spring rolls: ingredients tasted fresh and I think there was even mango in it which gave it a nice and different yet refreshing taste. My only downsides to this dish (and experience overall) was that it was too wet so the roll itself started unraveling as I was trying to eat it. It made it hard to dip and eat, but I think if the rice paper was drier, it would've been fine. The salt and pepper fries were great. I love thin fries and these were cooked to a good crisp. I asked for no jalapenos and onions because I don't particularly like them, but also because I didn't want it to make my fries soggy. Definitely a good item to get! Since I already had so many carbs in my order, I didn't want to order a full bowl of noodles, so I ordered a side order of the chicken pho broth. I definitely burned my tongue because it was so hot so be careful, but flavor was great. Overall, good spot for some good, quick bites! Inspired by the delicious sandwich I just bought, I want to review this place NOW! Now mind you, I just ate lunch and walked down to the place to see the menu. I ended up buying a roast pork sandwich and ate half of it on the way back to work. Four stars because it's pricey for Vietnamese sandwiches; it's on Fillmore Street, so I'm not surprised. The wait for my sandwich to-go was less than 10 minutes, but also there weren't a lot of people. The sandwich roll was nice and crispy, soft on the inside. My pork was tender and nicely seasoned, paired up with refreshing pickled carrots, daikons, heated up by the crunchy jalepenos, I was enamored with my first bite. It was refreshingly delicious. I must have said, "wow," a few times on the way back to work. I NEVER say "wow" and "work" in the same sentence! Must be that good! Cafe Bun Mee Come through for some delicious ban mi. Coming here is always fun for me. They have a cool Sriracha wallpaper and a cool neon sign on the wall to your left after entering. After walking around the Fillmore, this is a cool place to hang out for a quick bite while people watching. Church Street, Hayes Valley, and the Fillmore districts have become a haven for trendy food and for those that want something "gourmet". Nestled in the Fillmore, Bun Mee is a great example for modernized Vietnamese flair, notably their Bánh Mì. When ever I am in the Fillmore, I can't but help myself for a Bun Mee sandwich. Delicious, fresh, and uniquely theirs; I cannot find a reason to not recommend this establishment. You must try their Combination Pork (like the classic, but with two additional pork additions - which, to me, makes it even better than the original). Think classic bahn mi with a hipster twist. As someone who's been eating traditional bahn mi's for his entire life, I was really intrigued at Bun Mee. Some of my favorites include the grilled chicken, catfish, and the pork belly. The pork belly especially is greasy (as some others noted), salty, extremely delicious, and my absolute favorite. And so when all of the ingredients are truly amazing, but the bread is completely off, even the best sandwich, or in this specific case, a banh mi goes awry. The pâté, pork, pickled veggies, etc., etc., was all quite good, but the bread was just all wrong. It was too bready, too crusty, and too hard to bite into. The beauty of a banh mi is the inspiration it draws from French soft baguette and how incredibly well it pairs with Vietnamese ingredients. I'm a big fan of this cute little local chain. The ordering process and food delivery are quite quick and the waiting here is very minimal. The Vietnamese sandwiches are a bit pricier than other mom and pop shops around the city, but the ingredients are top quality and the bread is perfectly chewy and crusty. I recommend the Grilled Five Spice Chicken sandwich. The salads and entrees are excellent. The Bun Noodle Bowl is the closest thing to a true "bun", but has a unique Bun Mee take on it. When I'm craving a light lunch, a side salad and light bite do to the trick. For example, I enjoy the Mango Sesame Salad with the Pork and Shrimp Rolls. However, there wasn't a ton of seating, so a bigger group may have a challenge. Our food came within 5 minutes of ordering, which was a pleasant surprise. Also, their portions were huge! OMG! I have been dying for good Vietnamese and don't have a ton of choice where I live. I was so thrilled to eat the super delicious pork noodle bowl! I took it to go on the plane and yes, prices are high at the airport but I thought it was worth it! Many people on my 6 hour flight had nothing or a slice of pizza. The banh mi sandwiches aren't meant to be completely traditional; you'll find that they add their twist to them, with caramel aioli, cauliflower relish, etc. * Bun mee combo ($6.50): I liked the bread to filling ratio (plenty of filling) and the pickled veggies (carrots, daikon) were crunchy and tangy. IMHO, the most important part of a good banh mi is the bread, and Bun Mee has that part down perfectly. The baguettes here are just the perfect texture: crunchy crust with a soft and light center. Most other banh mi places I've tried in the area use much harder bread which takes away from the whole experience of a good banh mi sandwich. What's also cool here is that while you will find the traditional Vietnamese combination banh mi here, you will also find some less than traditional interpretations here. Sloppy Joe banh mi with a fried egg? Pork belly banh mi? Check and check! They call them "gourmet banh mi-inspired sandwiches". Now, don't let the "gourmet" part scare you. Sure, they are on Fillmore where rent is high. Sure, if you compare them to the super dingy, hole-in-the-wall, traditional banh mi shops, you may think of them as expensive. But the sandwiches here are still priced extremely reasonably, and with the quality of the ingredients, I'm happy to pay the few extra dollars. Did I mention this place is adorable? If arriving during the midday, you may also expect a long wait for your food and a table, because of the limited seating which isn't much. I was here twice already and both times, I ordered the 5-Spice grilled chicken sandwich for $5.95. For an additional $3.00, I get a side of sweet potato fries with my meal and Iced Vietnamese coffee for $3.50. The sandwich had grilled chicken, an aioli sauce, slices of onions, daikons, shredded cucumber, a cilantro leaf and slices jalapeno peppers in a warm baguette bread. The sandwich was very good with the chicken spiced and grilled nicely. The side was good with the tangy aioli dipping sauce. I love my iced Vietnamese coffee made the proper long-established way. But the coffee is made beforehand and served in high volumes in a large bucket. I'm not sure how much sugar was inserted in that bucket, but the iced coffee was way too sweet. I may skip the coffee here next time. My Visa was accepted here. The staff and owner were very friendly to me. Surprisingly, the food is just as good as any other Vietnamese deli.
