But after an early-morning appointment at Stanford, I was looking for a place to sit down and eat for a while--and I'm so glad I chose Sweet Maple. I had two scrambled eggs, which were cooked perfectly, and the brussels sprouts and potato mix was so good that I'm still thinking about it. It was savory and lightly salted and caramelized in all the right ways. I also had the Millionaire's bacon, which wasn't overly sweet and perfect with my breakfast. The ambiance is friendly and professional, and the decor shows that it's a bit more of an upscale place--which was reflected in the service I received.

Perfect timing -- by the time we finished our drinks, our table was ready, so the wait didn't feel long at all. The menu had so many tempting options that it was a shame there were only two of us to try everything. Next time I'd love to bring more friends along so we can order more dishes to share. The service was wonderful -- our server checked in on us throughout the meal and was genuinely friendly. The plating was really creative too. The eggs were cooked to perfection, and the chicken & waffles combo was such an inventive pairing -- very Instagram-worthy. Overall, a really enjoyable meal. Can't wait to go back with a bigger group!

Because they are located at the beginning of downtown, there is usually plenty of parking on the adjacent streets and also a parking garage directly behind the restaurant at the Webster/Cowper Garage. The restaurant is well-lit, clean, and inviting. The tables are well-spaced from each other. For the appetizer we started with their salt and pepper calamari. This was excellent and was was served with a cilantro lime dipping sauce. Since a few of them have never dined at Tamarine or it's been years, I recommended one of my favorite dishes to share, the Empress Rice. The garlic and ginger sticky rice topped with a sunny-side up egg and drizzled with sweet soy sauce is a must. They break the egg and mix it in table-side. We also ordered their garlic noodles which was also great. Traditionally other restaurants use lo mein noodles or thin spaghetti, but they use egg noodles here. You can taste that wok-tossed garlic, butter, and parmesan cheese flavor in the noodles. I think there was a hint of black pepper too. For the mains, the shaking beef is always a hit. The filet mignon beef cubes are so tender and cooked a perfect medium rare. It's served with a side of arugula salad. It was our first time trying their lemon grass sea bass and we all loved it. Since this was pan roasted there was this flavorful lemongrass and garlic crust on the fish! The service here is consistently friendly and attentive. They put a happy birthday sign on the cheesecake, which was cute, but just a heads-up, the birthday dessert was not free. The food was good overall, but nothing really stood out to me. Also, as someone who eats Vietnamese food quite often, I did not feel like any of the food was actually Vietnamese. The branzino came with nuoc cham, but that was pretty much it. Most of the menu felt more generally Asian-inspired than Vietnamese, which was disappointing. The service was just okay. The servers were nice, but not super friendly, and the whole interaction felt a little awkward. I also felt rushed throughout dinner because they kept asking if they could take our plates, even though we were clearly still eating and there was still food left. The restaurant definitely has a classy vibe, but to me it felt more like awkward classy. Overall, the food was decent, but between the service and the lack of Vietnamese flavors, I probably would not rush back.

Unbelievably salty: Both the garlic noodles and basil chicken were so salty that they were inedible. I had to rinse them with water five times, and then re-cook them myself just to make them edible. I've never had to do this with takeout before. The food wasn't just disappointing in terms of flavor and portion size--the biggest issue is that it feels like the restaurant is being extremely stingy while still charging fairly high prices. Poor portions, excessive salt, and very little meat. Definitely not worth the price, and I would not order from here again.

We checked in at the front desk and were quickly seated even though it was busy (did opt to sit at the sushi bar though). Sitting at the bar, Charles was our sushi chef (since he was stationed in front of us) and he was exceptional! Very knowledgeable and friendly, he was able to prepare our orders right in front of us as we ordered sushi throughout the course of our meal! I started with the Grand Cordon which was a gin-based cocktail. It was refreshing and light but may have preferred to order a japanese whisky instead. We ordered a trio of nigiri: hamachi, kanpachi and Japanese snapper. They were all excellent and fresh, but enjoyed the snapper the most (wife liked the kanpachi most). Charles also provided us both Kizami wasabi and fresh grated wasabi. The Kizami is what we love with its chopped pickled wasabi but the fresh grated wasabi was another game-changer! Also ordered the salmon skin salad with bonito flakes and citrus to squeeze, new style sashimi scallops, yellowtail sashimi jalapeño, a Toro scallion roll, spider roll and a black cod miso (hot). The salad was excellent with the crispy salmon skin and savory bonito flakes. We both preferred the scallops over yellowtail and were surprised we enjoyed the new style flavors. Yellowtail was still excellent and maybe we were too yellowtail'ed out from the nigiri (probably not since it's one of my favorite fish). The toro scallion roll was buttery smooth and spider roll with large soft shell crab filling helped cap off our fresh fish tasting experience. The black cod was very tasty with a sweet miso glaze but wasn't as noteworthy as all the fresh fish items. We couldn't celebrate without some A5 and ordered 2 oz and got it Ishiyaki style (highly recommend!). Coming out on a hot stone, we cooked our A5 wagyu with a garlic and herb infused oil and then grilled the whole garlic cloves with the rest of the heat from the stone. Very enjoyable night out without the little ones! Service was excellent and the place was small but lived up to the high end luxury restaurant experience!

I know Nobu can probably get away with the name in a pretentious place like Palo Alto, but for people who know how to eat like me...uhh nooo thanks. I usually like Thai food, but decided to live dangerously and try this Burmese restaurant. The tea leaf salad was nicely tossed at our table and the flavor profile was complex: delice! The calamari appetizer had really thick, bland batter on it. The batter seem more fitting for cod or some kind of larger, more textured white fish (like in the New England style of "fish and chips"). I barely tasted the calamari and had to graze through all that batter. The mango chicken main course was very flavorful. It was not too hot spicey but spices spicey which gave it a kick of flavors to the tender strips of white chicken mean: delice! We got jasmine rice to eat with our main dishes; for the price point and considering it was just rice, I thought we could get a little more for what we paid. Based on my experience and limited sampling of food on the menu, the taste of the food is pretty good; some of the ingredients were not so good; the portions were very stingy when you look at how much we were charged. The service was so-so. No one at the restaurant went out of their way to make us feel special or make our dinner nicer. They took our order (no recommendation), dropped off the food and left us alone (no checking back). Even though we had all kinds of food on the table, our server or other employees did not crumb or try to make our table look nice for the next course (I swear the romaine lettuce and yellow bean thing was staring at me from the table the entire time!). the employees did not smile often and made us feel like we were an imposition when we asked many questions or asked if something could be added to a particular dish. I don't mean to sound like a racist, but this is how I usually get treated at an Asian restaurant. I was hoping that since this was on University Avenue, maybe, I might get better, upscale and "Westernize" caliber of customer service. Points I did not like: This place is really cramped. We could smell the customers and had to move in contorted ways to avoid bumping into them. I like a little more room when I spend this kind of money and when I dine in this posh strip of Palo Alto. The restaurant also was really, really loud. Sound boards, anyone? We had to wait for our check because our server decided to go on a holiday in the middle of the dinner rush. By the time we flagged him down, it took him another long amount of time to print out our check. And then there was the time he had to pick up the check with my Visa card and then the time he had to return the printouts for me to sign for the charges. Before we asked for the check and after we sat there staring at our empty dishes, he never offered us any desserts, coffee or any kind of after-dinner drinks or anything. I also saw the next tables drinks (hard to miss since the tables were placed to closed to each other) be totally empty and the server never refilled it or removed the glass. The ghetto service does not match well with this new, modern interior setting of this restaurant. This bad combinations of experience made our delicious food seem not that pleasant, after all. Would I return to Burma Ruby? I might. But there are several Thai/Burmese/Chinese/Indian restaurant in Palo Alto generally and also along University Avenue that has the same, if not better, tasting and quality food, same mediocre or forgettable customer service and cost much, much less ... and do not have the parking problems that sometimes make dining in downtown PA a little stressful and inconvenient. There are many take-outs type of places that offer me better value, better food and better no-fuss service. I say I "might" because I am still pondering why I would trouble myself and invest my money into this place when it really does not offer me anything better than what is already out there. read more

This place never disappoints. Whether we dine in or order take out the food and service is consistant, fast, and gracious. My favorites include the rainbow salad, palata, and the coconut soup. If you have room for dessert you should order the black rice and ice cream. Lastly, this location does have outside seating so if you are inclined to bring fido you can and it makes for great people watching. read more

Came here twice so far. First time no reservations, but was seated right away. Second time with reservations. Service was good no complaints at all. Food was amazing! Instead of confirming the order or asking any questions, the first thing I heard from the cook was, "Get her card first." The cashier then immediately said, "Give me your card." Only after my payment was processed did they hand me my food and say, "Thank you." I completely understand that businesses need to protect themselves and ensure orders are paid for before they're released. That's not the issue. It's the way it was handled. As a customer, it felt like I was being treated as if I might take the food and run, rather than being welcomed into a local, family-owned business. A simple greeting, confirming the order, and then politely requesting payment would have made all the difference. Great customer service and protecting your business can absolutely go hand in hand. The food was outstanding, but the experience made me feel unwelcome. Sadly, because of the customer service, I don't see myself returning.

Every single bite was flavorful, and all the meats were perfectly tender. For our entrées, we ordered the chicken tikka masala and lamb vindaloo with garlic naan and plain naan. And of course, I had to get a mango lassi, I always do. Everything was absolutely delicious. The sauces were rich, well-seasoned, and flavorful in every bite. The only thing I noticed was that service was a bit slow. There was only one other table when we arrived, and another came in after us, but somehow their food came out before ours. It wasn't a huge deal, just something we noticed. Even with the slower service, the food more than made up for it. I will be coming back.
