Pain D'Avignon has some wonderful breads I love buying. The baguette with green olives has a satisfying crust. Just enough hardness to enjoy biting into it and to tear off a piece. The inside is airy and delicious. The onion baguette is yummy. The bread itself is infused with the taste of onion, which is a promise not many onion breads can keep. The best find is the seven grain Pullman bread. It's hearty in flavor. When you bite into a slice, you do NOT feeling like you're fighting to chew the bread and it's not like eating a piece of Wonder bread either. It's just right; the way bread should be. it's a great sandwich bread too. The help behind the counter is friendly, which always makes the experience nicer. read more

While their bread is exceptional, I would not get their croissant. It tasted store bought and really not what I expected from a bakery, though I guess I should head to a French boulangerie like Mille Fuelle for that. On a brighter side, I grabbed a humungous, hearty, and thick brick of onion foccocia for $2-3. I'm slowly working on it now at home. It makes great sandwiches and crostinis. read more

I'm a regular at Essex Market and have long lamented that the only thing missing was yummy fresh bread. Thankfully, Pain D'Avignon arrived on the scene. I've tried a wide range of their breads, and they are delicious, crusty and reasonably priced. Their chocolate croissants are also quite something. Loved trying some of the bread here--it's a true gem inside of Essex street market! I loved the sourdough, it was so fresh and moist! Some of the best bread I've had outside of Europe. The store owner also mentioned that their croissant won top 5 croissants in NYC? or the US? not sure haha, but they have great croissants here. I tried the black and white croissant, which was a chocolate flavored croissant with cream filling inside. Absolutely delicious! Kind of different because the bread itself was chocolate flavored. Their cranberry-pecan cookie was also really great--kinda crumbly, but very sweet and buttery. I've come here several times now, and always to purchase the same thing - their seven-grain long. It's delicious, incredibly healthy, and incredibly filling (seriously, I sometimes eat a slice and I'm full). It's like Lembas bread. No, but seriously, the folks who work here are super nice, and the bread is great. Plus it's inside Essex market, which is always a pro, since I can stop there while on my usual grocery trip! A bread store located inside the Essex Street Market. This is the place to go to if you're in need of freshly baked bread. It's a super tiny place, but they have a great selection of bread. Also, they make this walnut, chocolate bread/pastry thingy that is absolutely amazing, and this is coming from someone who is super picky about her sweets. Haven't been to the StoreFront in the Essex Market but I do buy their Baguette each and everyday from Whole Foods in Westport CT. Having grown up in France I know a thing or three about French Bread and let me just say this is the best Baguette I've ever had on this side of the Atlantic! I used to have a local favorite (Norwalk, CT area) but this just blows them away in every aspect. If you are looking for a REAL Baguette, check your local Whole Foods Bakery Section and hope and pray they are one of the few that carry this incredibly delicious Baguette...you will not be disappointed! read more

Came to try their almond croissant, but it seems this item is so popular, there were none left by 12pm, so come early. Tried a chocolate hazelnut one instead, it was soft, flaky and only subtly sweet. The texture was quite different from other croissants I've had in my life: fewer layers, less buttery. Also got a brioche with creme fresh and lox, which is a very elegant and light alternative to bagel and lox. They have some beautiful breads too. read more

Somehow you Americans don't know how to make a decent bread. So thank god there are bakeries like Pain D'Avignon. The place is very small; so small you might overlook it. The girl behind the counter seemed to have a bad day. Or maybe she adopted the French's structural crankiness. Oh. My. God. Finally I found REAL BREAD in the US. They for sure make the best bread I've ever had in the states and it reminds me soooo much of home!!! Before Pain D'Avignon came along, the LES was stuck in the backwaters of bread-yness. You couldn't find a good roll without searching far and away from home. But now we're finally on par with other parts of Manhattan; crusty baguettes, rich raisin+nut loaves, delicate cheddar brioches, hearty and filling foccacias, I could go on and on and on! Good cranberry-pecan roll and pain au chocolate -- this could have used more chocolate inside. This was more like real bread and chocolate, not the overly buttery and flaky croissant like pain au chocolates at other city bakeries. The girl at the counter said she couldn't heat it up for me. I think it would have tasted better and softer warm, or even better when it was first baked as we were there at closing time. Definitely worth a try though. read more

A tiny store tucked away in the Essex Market. The prices are great, there are quite a few options of bread types and sizes. Their croissants rival some of the best I've had in Paris. A really decent bakery just inside Essex Market. Two things. The Pane Francese is very good. You can use it to eat with pate or make a sandwich. Secondly their Stumptown coffee beans are super cheap as are their breads comparatively speaking. A bag of beans at a Stumptown store are $15 and at Pain d'Avignon they are $12ish give or take 50 cents. If you're in Essex Market check'em out. read more
