The scallop risotto at Cafe Hiro is one of those dishes you keep thinking about long after the last bite. The scallops were perfectly seared...tender, buttery, and just the right amount of caramelized on the outside paired with a creamy risotto that was rich without feeling heavy. Every bite felt balanced and intentional, with flavors that complemented each other instead of competing. I have not had risotto like this elsewhere. That's why I keep coming back. Service is very good which I like. The ambiance feels like a cozy cafe. And the watermelon margarita? Easily one of the most refreshing drinks I've had in a while. Light, slightly sweet, and incredibly crisp it had that perfect fresh watermelon taste without being overly sugary. It paired so well with the richness of the risotto and made the whole meal feel elevated yet effortless. Overall, such a standout combo comforting, refreshing, and definitely worth going back for.
Yoooooooooooooooooooooo! I've been coming here maybe 4-5 times a year--not super often, but enough to know how good it usually is. Unfortunately, my last two visits have been pretty mediocre compared to how I remember it. One thing I noticed was that the Japanese chef who's usually in the kitchen wasn't there. The staff mentioned he was on vacation, so maybe that explains why the food didn't hit the same. Service was also really slow. I did see a "help wanted" sign outside, so I get that they might be understaffed--but it still took about 30 minutes just to place our order, and another 35 minutes for the food to come out. We started with the calamari, but it came out without marinara or tartar sauce. When I asked, the server said he had to check if they even had any--which was kind of surprising. They did end up having it, but only after I asked. I ordered my usual--kurobuta pork cutlet with curry--which is normally cooked perfectly, but this time it was overcooked and not tender like it usually is. My mom and sister got the seafood uni pasta, and they also said it didn't taste the same as before. I'm hoping this was just an off couple of visits. I'll probably come back when the main chef is back and give it another shot.
I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone I know. Worst bowl of spaghetti I have EVER had in my life. I ordered takeaway for mentaiko spaghetti. The woman inside made me wait outside for more than 30 minutes and couldn't have been ruder and more aggressive about it. The actual spaghetti itself wasn't worth the wait, the hostile and racist attitude to put up with, or the $30 price tag. My college dining hall had better tasting over-boiled spaghetti than that. The Mentaiko spaghetti was extremely overboiled and had the wrong flavors. It was soggy, sweet, bland, and downright DISGUSTING. It was coated in sweet milk like sauce and had a bitter aftertaste to it. The noodles had no salt and it was truly the most disgusting thing I have eaten in a very long time. The lack of customer service made the whole experience all that more vile. I highly recommend no one to get any sort of food from there. How someone can charge so much money for so little food with such foul quality is mind boggling to me. I have no idea how this place even stays in business. There are so many restaurants in the vicinity with far better quality of service and food. I suggest going to Unico Tokyo Pasta, Pasta e Allegro, Akane Chaya, just to name a few. Seriously. Anywhere but Cafe Hiro.
Had a lovely four course meal on Valentine's Day. I really liked the ambiance in here, it gives a homely hole in the wall vibe compared to Ini (which has similar food). Uni Pasta was amazing as was their bread pudding. However I was not a fan of the service. I made a reservation and asked to be sit in one of the EMPTY tables available for guests. Whoever the waitress with the blonde balayage was completely gave me attitude and coldly told me that we were getting the booth. I didn't know that a customer making a request was grounds for irritation. If you wonder why you didn't get a tip, there's your answer.
It's been over a decade since I discovered Cafe Hiro and they are as popular as ever. I highly recommend making a reservation as there are scarce availability for walk-ins. I came with my boyfriend at opening time and they definitely asked if we had a reservation. During our time there, we saw each table fill up slowly. I noticed some enhancements since my last visit like the cushions on the seats Nice touch. They had a menu for 2 but we weren't hungry enough for that amount of food, so we decided to order by the dish. My boyfriend had the Seafood Pasta ($28) and I had the Sea Urchin "Uni" Pasta ($28). My uni pasta was as delicious as I remembered it. It was well coated and you can see clumps of uni in the pasta. My boyfriend's seafood pasta had a generous amount of seafood. There was shrimp, scallop, calamari, mussels, clams, and mushrooms. Nice and chunky. The seafood felt like a large portion since the protein it comes with were more hearty whereas the uni pasta is a light coating, but it is sufficient for my appetite. Looking forward to coming back to try more of their menu. Maybe we need to recruit some friends because they have an omakase that requires 4 people due to the large portion size. I really want to try their risotto.
My favorite thing to order here is the shiso ume pasta with seafood mix. The uni pasta is also really good. The salmon with veggies is a lighter entree and come with a small bowl of rice so it's good if you aren't very hungry. The salmon with risotto is on the heavier side cause of the risotto. We like to dine in here once in a while cause they take reservations. It's on the smaller side and quaint but I like the vibe. Service has been good but also slow when they're super busy. I like the sauce with the complimentary crudités they serve in the beginning.
This is my favorite Japanese Italian spot! You honestly can't go wrong with any dish that they have to offer. I've tried such a variety - Peking pork, mushroom salad, uni pasta, osso bucco, hamburg curry, risotto, panna cotta, and croissant bread pudding. Each dish was so good. If I had to choose some favorites to recommend, it would be the uni pasta, risotto and croissant bread pudding. Service is always good. All the servers are super nice and interior really gives off cute & homey vibes. Perfect spot for a date or catching up with friends.
Came here with a reservation. Pretty tiny restaurant but the food here tastes so delicious and unique! It's not often that you find an Asian fusion place that does it right. My favorite was the seared tuna dish. The sauce is very umami and light. Highly recommend. And it also comes with rice !! The chicken katsu was also perfectly crispy and juicy inside and the curry had a nice sweet kick at the end, I think from apples in the sauce possibly? I'd say I'd try other options than the seafood spaghetti tho. The flavors were a bit straightforward and it tasted like seafood + tomato with not much else. They give a lot of protein with that though which was nice! I'd love to come back again and try more of their menu. It's a lovely restaurant and everyone here is super nice.
I really enjoyed the food at this interesting little Japanese/italian fusion restaurant. We arrived without a reservation, but they found a table for us at one of the tables that's in the hallway. It is not at all like a Japanese restaurant, but more like an Italian themed room. There are clouds and Vines painted on the ceiling and a few pieces of art. It is very cozy and intimate. There is a framed copy of the article about this restaurant from the Los Angeles Times. I'm not going to lie, though--where we were sitting I could see that the base of the wall near the could use a really good cleaning. I tried not to let it bother me, but it kind of did. I kept reminding myself of the "pass" health department certificate posted in the window. No worry, though, because the food more than made up for it. There is a Zagat sticker in the window from a past year. Our server was really good and very sweet. She came to check on us often, which is always a good thing. We weren't terribly hungry, so we ordered light. We ordered: *Beef Tataki *Ahi Tartar *Karaage Curry *Chicken Salad The food was delicious, especially the Tataki. Yummmmm!! The portions were generous, too. This place could definitely be on repeat for us. It does look like it's very popular, as reservations are recommended and the place was full when we left. Honestly, it would easily have been 5 stars for me if the walls down by the floors had a good scrub.
I've been coming here for many years & it's always been consistently good. Service is always kind & efficient. I've tried many items on their menu & I have no complaints about the quality of their food. For my recent visit, my friend & I came here for dinner on a week night. Ambiance is a hole in the wall hidden gem. Place was still packed on a week night but we got seated right away since we made reservations. We had the scallop carpaccio, pork katsu curry, crispy tofu, & bread pudding as dessert. The scallops were fresh, pork katsu was crispy, & tonkatsu sauce had a rich bold flavor which I love. The tofu was soft & the texture on the outer layer had just the right amount of crisp. The bread pudding was delicious & wasn't too sweet. I will continue to dine here as long as they are around.
Very prompt and attentive service. No wait at noon on a Saturday. Fair prices. Decent option for dates. Inside is very cozy. You can make reservations but I wouldn't come with a huge group, maybe 6 max. Food flavors overall are very light and subtle. You get full, but no food coma. Scallop carpaccio (4.5/5): fresh and has a very slight kick from the curry oil. Overall quite subtle but tasty. Chicken and mushroom curry (3/5): decent, creamy, but wish it was a little more flavorful. The rice was not impressive and was more on the wet/mushy side. Seared sesame seed crusted ahi tuna (3/5): Large portions but the tuna was cooked quite a bit more than a sear. End up being like a looser pork texture. Comes with rice on the side. Wish it was more flavorful, but the bok choy is much more salted, and combined with the sweet snd savory sauce, it offsets the lack of flavor in the tuna. They seem to give kids their own sectioned kids plate, which is nice.
Cafe Hiro is a textbook hole-in-the-wall. You wouldn't think much of the unassuming restaurant at first glance, but the inside is decorated with just the right amount of whimsy and charm that makes you question if you're really still in Cypress. The ceiling is painted to look like the sky, and the walls create the ambiance of an outdoor bistro on a Parisian street. There's even a moody little alleyway strung up with fairy lights and warm lighting where you can sit. Service was great. The workers are very kind and professional. The menu consists mostly Japanese style western food - Hamburg steak, pasta, and the like. Their signature dish is the uni pasta. As someone who isn't the biggest uni fan, it's delicious. The uni flavor is strongly present without the typical uni texture, blending beautifully in the sauce. The rich, creamy sauce is lit up delightfully by wasabi, surprisingly lacking the harshness you would expect from typical wasabi. The pasta was cooked perfectly as well. The Hamburg steak and risotto dishes are also decent choices. The appetizers are also definitely worth getting. I recommend the Peking pork bao buns and the fried chicken. The cook was perfect and the flavors are delicious. The standout dish for me, however, was the bread pudding with bitter caramel sauce. It was genuinely the perfect dessert. The bitter caramel sauce complemented the soft bread pudding. It was not too sweet and the burnt butter taste from the caramel added a depth to the dish. I highly recommend Cafe Hiro.
Its been almost 16 years since we first discovered this little cafe. Japanese fusion places are risky at times, but this place is solid. Their tenure is proof of their quality. Environment is clean and appealing. Dim enough for an intimate date but also good for the family or a casual meal out with friends. The food is fresh and delicious . My favorites are the miso salmon, sesame crusted ahi and miso glazed fish. The cold sake choices are good, but could be better. I have to remember to frequent this place more. Arigato read more

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS RESTAURANT!!! Been frequenting them for years with my mom and enjoy their food every single time. Even the ambiance is super nice and perfect for a date as well, usually night time they have cute lighting inside. I always get the same order (sea urchin/uni spaghetti), but today I added on the mentaiko for a bit of a kick with spice. Also got one of their specialty wine cocktails (passion fruit margarita) and LOVED EVERY LAST SIP!! Their salad had this really yummy homemade dressing that had a little wasabi kick in it, but super delicious too!! Prices have gone up at least $5 for the spaghetti I typically order due to inflation and the pandemic, but I still think that it's HIGHLY WORTH IT. My check came out to $77 including tip, sooo before you visit, just be aware of the increase in prices. Other than that, I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS DINING LOCATION!! read more

The restaurant was dim and the ambiance was okay. It was very homey and felt like this was a place only locals go to. I guess I hyped it up in my mind and expected it to be bright and hip cool place. However, the food is very delicious and the seafood was fresh! Here is what we ordered: 1) Sea Urchin/Uni Pasta - I was expecting big chunks of uni but I would say this dish had plenty of small bits throughout the pasta. It was topped with nori and wasabi. It was so fun mixing it in. It wasn't too spicy and the overall flavor was very delicious! 2) Seafood and Uni Risotto - The seafood in this was awesome, and included mushrooms, scallop, clam, mussel, calamari and shrimp. There wasn't any uni pieces in there but I'm sure they mixed some kind of uni paste into this dish. The mushroom risotto in this was amazing! I couldn't stop eating it! 3) Roasted Chilean Sea Bass with Mushroom Risotto - Again, the mushroom risotto was awesome, and the fish had a great taste to it. As someone who usually doesn't like fish, I enjoyed trying this one out. The soup and salad that came with the dishes were awesome. I loved the dressing they used and the soup was very hearty. I had a green soup, but I'm not sure what it was. Regardless, we enjoyed our meal here and the service was great!! read more

I came here to try delicious food. And fine out food that we ordered is good. But the service advised is quite horrible. Food take over an hour to be served. Servers never come and asked us or informed us any thing. Try to called them multiple time. Unfortunately, they pretended not seeing our table which is next to the registered. Good food but not worth coming but for this kind of service and the price that you pay. read more

It's a cute little Japanese/Italian fusion restaurant. The menu has Japanese translation. Staff was very attentive and polite. They always filled up my water. I came here 3 years ago with coworkers for the first time. They were raving about how the Uni Spaghetti is the bomb here. I remember eating it and was impressed with the taste and uniqueness. I guess I just never had this kind of food before. So here I am coming back for the second time after 3 years. Why took me so long? Well besides distance, the price. I'm not in a place where I can afford a $20 meal that easily. My bank is only enough for once every 3 years. So I got the Uni Spaghetti again. Delicious, creamy, and the noodles were boiled perfectly. It could be a little too hard on some people but I loved it. It was definitely a harder texture than regular spaghetti. It came with wasabi and seaweed strips. Mix everything and you're good to go. You can order a combo with soup and salad for $5, but just the spaghetti itself already filled me up. I'm really full now. I'll be back to bring family and friends. read more

Best uni pasta I've tried so far! You can taste fresh uni, the taste of ocean. Their scallop mushroom risotto was so delicious too. Can't really go wrong with their dish. You don't find Japanese cafe around the area and this is my favorite Japanese cafe. read more
I arrived on a tuesday evening around 5:30PM. My date and I were the first folks here. Seating was quick and easy. SO why the 2 stars? Let me tell you.... First: The table...this thing was STICKY. I mean really sticky. Normally I can put my wallet and phone onto the table top, but this was just nasty. It was obviously over worn and needed to be replaced. I couldn't even lean my elbows on it because the table tops were so sticky and gross! Second: The food...I ordered 2 items. The fish risotto and the uni spaghetti. It's what everyone orders. The uni spaghetti: It was okay. I don't know why people make it sound like it's so amazing, because it seriously isn't. It was really overpriced too! I wouldn't pay more than $10 for this item. Just wasn't my cup of tea. 2/5 stars for this. Sorry folks. As for the risotto...well a small salad came with it, and some pea soup too! Pea soup was great! Salad...well you can't mess salad up so that was good too. But the seafood risotto...yeah 2/5 as well. Flavorful but NOTHING spectacular. I was really hoping for some super amazing food but this place is simply mediocre. I don't think I'd ever come back here, just because I feel like everything is ridiculously overpriced. From the outside, this gem of a restaurant can look deceiving. However! This is a fabulous Japanese-Italian fusion treasure. The food is fresh. A lot of seafood dishes sprinkled with vegetarian items. Their salads are just delicious. We were seated and served quickly. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. The three of us ordered one pasta dish each we started with edamame and their salad with mushrooms radish Romain just delicious flavors. I got the seafood risotto with truffle oil and mushroom and I added spinach so yummy. My friends got the seafood pasta with tomato sauce, which I thought the sauce was leaning towards the sweet side, but still very good and my other friend who's a vegetarian, got the pasta with garlic spinach and mushrooms. They cook their pasta so perfectly al dente...And then came the desert. We try to be good by just ordering two desserts to share amongst three of us. We got the croissant bread pudding with caramel sauce and fresh berries and Panna cotta. Oh yes, and we also ordered the famous Uni pasta to share. We stayed to chat, and then we decided the desserts were so good that we ordered two more croissant, bread, pudding, and one more Panna cotta with berries. We're so appreciative of places like this great service amazing food, fresh ingredients, reasonable prices. We love this place and we will be back. read more

one of my favorite places for uni pasta :) i also recommend the beef tataki appetizer & the takara plum wine! overal great food note: the cafe is relatively small (best to come in parties of 2-3). the menu is online. personally the style/furniture of the cafe feels outdated but its home-y! read more

This lovely little cafe specializes in the fusion of flavors, mainly Japanese, French, and Italian. The best part is...Chef Hiro does a fine job at it! We came here to celebrate a friend's birthday and we were quite a group. I was actually surprised that they take reservations despite the limited capacity of the restaurant but I'm glad they did because everyone enjoyed the food. It was amazing! I came here for the first time on Mother's day at around 2:30pm and got seated right away. We got the following Calamari- Was very good and wasn't overly fried. It didn't come with any sauce to dip in but was perfect the way it was. I highly recommend Uni risotto- It was very good but I got sick of the risotto quickly. I want to try the uni spaghetti instead nice time. Seabass on top of mushroom risotto- It was served with some asparagus. The seabass was good and the mushroom risotto was okay. Our food also came out with some salad and soup, which was okay. We also ordered some bread pudding croissant to go. When we got home and opened it, it was someone else LEFT OVER FOOD that they had pack. Are you fucking kidding me?! We had to call them and drive all the way back to return that nasty food and pick up our dessert, which they should have comp. Totally unacceptable. Located just a stone's throw (it's a 20 min drive) from Disneyland and even closer to Knott's Berry Farm is this cute little (30 seater?) place that serves the most amazing 5-star caliber food without the 5-star prices. So I honestly don't know how I came across this place but I decided to order from here cause I was looking for soft things to eat since I had wisdom tooth surgery...anyway- I saw they had scallop risotto and panna cotta, and thought to myself- hell yeah let's get a nice dinner today rather than the typical soup you're "supposed to eat." So I'm eating this at home and WOW, the risotto is so delicious! It comes with this side dressing? Sauce? And definitely drizzle it on! It added a wonderful brightness and it was perfect!! So as I sat eating dinner with an ice pack on my face, I couldn't help but be thoroughly satisfied with my meal! Made me forget about the pain lol!!! And the panna cotta is also delicious! I really like the unique interior decor of this place; it makes you feel instantly relaxed. Our server was very helpful and so sweet; she definitely made the meal experience all the more enjoyable. She answered all our questions about the menu and steered me toward a couple of good recommendations when I was vacillating in making decisions. I wanted to hug her when we left but seriously, that would be creepy. I ordered off the specials board, a dish I'm told they have every now and then: top sirloin with mushroom risotto. The smallish steak was very flavorful and tender, the risotto was crazy-delicious-out-of-this-world good. I had an Arnold Palmer to drink; here the emphasis is on the lemonade (I like). I should mention the meal came with a green salad (covered with the dressing all Japanese salads seem to have) and a bowl of black bean soup, the latter of which I'm not a fan of so I gave it to my dining companion who must have liked it because she practically licked the bowl clean. Pot de Crème au Chocolat for dessert! The best way I can describe it is like a super-chocolatey milkshake thickened up into a pudding. It was really quite wonderful. The restaurant was so dead when I visited; I wasn't feeling the vibe even though they are so cutely decorated. The waitress was pretty much absent and forgettable. The restaurant, though, has a blue sky-white cloud ceiling and handmade signs on each table. I started noticing these things when the waitress wasn't getting my attention. It wasn't hard to find Café Hiro. They're within the corner of California Fish Grill. Parking gets tight, so you might have to find a spot farther away. I tried the uni pasta. This was only my second time trying uni pasta. I still don't like it much, but it was prepared better than the first one I tried at another Japanese restaurant. I shared this, so I didn't have to throw up at the end of the meal. The duck with risotto was much better. I loved the mushroom risotto but the duck was lacking the kick to make this dish 100%. I would have liked it better if they cleaned it and removed the skin and then just added little more sauce for the duck. The panna cotta was such a small portion size. The only thing I remember about it was I thought I was eating vanilla yogurt! It totally looks like yogurt in my photo, hehe. I LOVED the berry sauce and all the fruit on top though. Will I be back? What? Japanese people eat spaghetti?! Penne? Wtf?! And here I thought the only food item was sushi. To further expand my Japanese food knowledge, my partner took me to a cute and clean "I-talian" decor restaurant where people were already waiting outside for the restaurant to open. After the employees let us in and customers greedily grabbing a table, my eyes feasted upon, YOu guessed it, Chillean Sea Bass and the Black cod. They both looked really swell but I couldn't stray away from First love: Chillean sea bass yumm. We ordered: Apps-Pork Buns Pan crusted Chillean Sea bass with mushroom risotto (comes w soup + salad) Duck with mushroom risotto (comes w soup + salad) Dessert- Green Tea custard Pork Buns- (4 Stars) Yummy soft buns with really soft, tender, slighty fatty pork. This dish had the cutest presentation and very tastey Chillean Sea Bass (2 stars)- I swear this piece is NOT CHILLEAN. I know my chillean sea basses and this is not one of them. Chillean sea bass is fatty, buttery, melts in your mouth, and just falls apart. This chillean sea bass was denser and dry in certain parts. =/ I am not happy. Duck with mushroom risotto (3 stars)- My partner ordered this dish. When I got a taste I almost wanted to vomit it back out from the gameyness of the meat. Ewww smeellyy! I usually have no problems with duck but this one was NO BUENO uh uh. My partner wasn't as repulsed but still thought the dish was just Okay. GT custard- eh, nothing special except the nice touch of azuki on the bottom I mainly gave this restaurant full 3 stars because the service was very attentive but other than that, A-okay food. read more

What? I haven't reviewed yet? I was surprised when I got to my drafts and discovered this. I have been here a few times and have thoroughly enjoyed myself each time. The food is a cross between an Italian restaurant and a Japanese. Decor definitely has the Japanese influence and is pleasant. The last time we went, we got there around 9:00 following a failed adventure at another local Italian restaurant. We sat at this other place for 45 minutes without anybody coming to get our order, but that is a different story. Here, we were seated and eating within 10 minutes. We started with the edamame and the Sautéed mushroom salad. This salad was a special and had a light citrus flavor to it. I don't know if they will continue to have this on the menu, but I would order it again if it was there. For the main dishes, I read so much about the uni spaghetti, and never having tried it, I decided to venture to this realm. The dish was flavorful and different from what I have ever had before. Really liked it. The GF had the spicy spinach, bacon and garlic spaghetti. This dish was truly a star. Its a toss up on which I would order upon returning, but I would currently lean towards the latter. Definitely one to revisit. read more

Cafe Hiro is located in a little plaza off of Valley View and Cerritos. From the outside, Cafe Hiro looks unassuming. However, the inside is beautiful and looks like a cozy, "upscale" establishment. Service: The service here was excellent! Even though they were packed on a Saturday night, they did not rush us at all. There were three waitresses working along with five people in the kitchen. All of them were working their butts off since the restaurant was so busy. Great job to the staff at Cafe Hiro. Food: Beef tataki: Seared rare beef, red onions, daikon, green onion and ponzu. Absolutely delicious! The meat was seasoned and seared perfectly! The onion and ponzu add great flavor as well. A MUST ORDER! 5/5 Sautéed spinach & sea urchin pasta: Spinach and uni in a tamari sauce. I thought the dish was tasty and you can definitely get that uni flavor. The sautéed spinach adds a nice flavor/texture to the dish. This dish is one of their most popular dishes, so try it out! 4/5 Seared scallop with mushroom risotto: WOW! Absolutely amazing! Five smaller sized scallops on a bed of mushroom risotto. The scallops were cooked perfectly. The mushroom risotto was rich and creamy. A must try as well. 5/5 I will definitely be back soon to try out a few other dishes that caught my eye. Also, make sure you save room for dessert since I've heard the desserts are delicious! This place is pricey, but totally worth it to splurge once in a while! Doesn't look that great from the outside or even inside, but the food here is absolutely delicious! ~~~ PUMPKIN SOUP ~~~ Oh man the best pumpkin soup ever! I savored every sip of soup. [Soup & salad came with one of the entrees] ~~~ SEA URCHIN "UNI" SPAGHETTI ~~~ Light taste of uni, so yum! I haven't been here in years until recently, but Cafe Hiro has still kept its charm. The restaurant doesn't seat many people so I'd suggest coming in the afternoon for lunch. Our entrees came with a simple salad and cold tomato soup, fitting for a hot summer day. I had the Chilean sea bass risotto with mushroom and my friend had the carbonara. The risotto was cooked just to my liking and the seasoning was on the milder side. The fish was soft and succulent, almost buttery. I got to try my friend's carbonara and it was saucy, flavorful, and the portion could have easily fed two people. Service came with a smile, and although the food seemed to take a bit long to come out, it tasted like it was made to order. This cute little spot is perfect for a quiet lunch or date. read more

They don't really have any gluten-free options. It uses Japanese condiments that has gluten.
Do you have options for my vegetarian friend?
They have salads but the portions and pricing makes it not worth it. They are not accommodating with any requests whatsoever.
