I've been to this location twice and the South County one numerous times (my old boss was a huge fan). I've never once had even decent service at one of these places. Wait staff tends to just roam around until randomly encountering your table. The food is mediocre at best. Sub-par greasy spoon fare. The pizza is okay and I've never been impressed by any of the sandwiches. Their fries are greasy and limp. But if you like to eat at a place that looks like it's owned by a senior citizen with a hoarding addiction, all the kitschy shit on the walls should make you feel great. read more

I'm only giving 3 stars because the food was just average and our waitress was pretty bad. I got the Wall Street sandwich which was good, but nothing to write home about. The atmosphere was cute, I love old-fashioned diners. I didn't get to order anything from the soda fountain, so I probably missed the best part of the restaurant there, but just from a food and service perspective, not the best place I've been to. Great place for St. Louis style pizza. I'm from Chicago, and love our pizza, but I am slowly coming around to the thin, provel topped variety. Toasted ravioli is a long time favorite of mine, and is another St. Louis treat. The old soda fountain drinks were great as well. Took my mom there for lunch. Cute Elvis decor, very nice server but wow the food is what blew me away. Roast beef sandwich with peppers and onions came out steaming along with a sizzling large portion of crinkle cut fries and au jous. My mom has a turkey sandwich and raved the entire time. A friend and I went to Café Manhattan for dinner, but this time was not as pleasant as the times before. It took way too long for us to get our food. I ordered a Caesar Salad which was always good previously, but this time, the croutons that they used didn't taste as good as last time, and there was way too much salad dressing on it, with a little too much parmesan cheese, too. It didn't taste bad, but it wasn't nearly as good as before and I have had better Caesar Salads elsewhere. read more

This place was OK ... Not great, but not terrible either (waffled between giving it two or three stars). I was visiting from out of town and wanted to grab a sandwich close to our hotel. The deli I tried to go to was closed on Mondays so I went across the street to try this place. I got the Italian sub and it was fine, but nothing to write home about. It definitely could have used more dressing and some more veggies (it was almost entirely meat and bread). It did come with chips, a pickle spear and a cookie, so pretty good value for a filling lunch. If I come back, I would like to try their pizza. read more

Awesome old-school diner with great fresh food at reasonable prices. The location is great (Clayton) with convenient parking. The staff is consistently friendly and fast. Their specialty soup is a cheddar potato soup that is one of the best in town. Salads and sandwiches are fresh and good sizes. Eat at a booth or the counter and enjoy a nice upscale diner with friends. I prefer it for lunch as it can get loud with kids sometimes for dinner. A great overall Gem of a restaurant here in STL. Kind of caters to families/kids, but Manhattan Express (same place, but a walk in and order fast environment) is around the corner next to Starbucks on Wydown and has a nice outdoor seating area. read more

This is my boyfriend and I's weekly spot. We come here every Friday or Saturday. Kind of our ritual. Okay okay.......maybe not EVERY week.......but pretty damn close. Sometimes it's a winner sometimes it's not. It just depends on who is in there. If there is a bunch of kids it's bad. Its a small place so, it can get loud. But, if that doesn't bother you, awesome. The food here is good. They have a pretty good variety. They have your normal diner food. Burgers, sandwiches, chicken fingers, etc. But then they also have Pizza. Which is really good. They have St. Louis style. ( like imos ) and New York Style. They also have a variety of pastas. I like their veggie lasagna. VERY good. They have carry out for all of their items as well. which is cool. They also have a full service malt and soda bar. Their malts are SOOOOOO GOOD!!! We always enjoy ourselves when we come here. Delicious food and great service. An awesome local place. Had a very 50's diner feel and nestled in the neighborhood, we ended up walking from the Sheraton hotel we were staying in. Best shakes on the planet (well almost). They actually give you the entire shake - which is more than fits in the shake glass. Hamburgers are second to none (in my opinion). We take our out of town guests to this place at least once while they are here. The food here is good-overpriced for what you get, but given that it's in Clayton, you expect that. I am giving it one star for a simple reason-horrible customer service and greed. We've eaten here for many years and never had any serious issues...then a few months ago, we went there for dinner and split a sandwich. When we got the bill, they charged us $2 to "split" the sandwich--literally, to cut it in half and place it on two separate plates. To make it even more ridiculous, they charged us twice for the "fries" upgrade--because, ya know, two plates and all. The server made a point of saying that it was the manager who added these charges--charges we weren't told about and if we had been, we would have declined. I wrote a short letter to the manager last month to give the owner a chance to make it right and have never received a response. We will never go back...very bad business and just rude. read more

AUTISM FRIENDLY! The restaurant is great for families. As it turns out, it is also great for families with a member on the autism spectrum. My 10 YO son was having difficulty transitioning from the parking lot to the restaurant and was being rigid about the menu choices. Our waitress, Ann, was fantastic and didn't bat an eyelash as my son worked through his distress. Turns out Ann has a teenage son at home on the spectrum. Needless to say, we left a big tip. It's hard for families with a child with special needs to dine out, but Ann, and Manhattan Cafe, made our outing that much better. THANK YOU!! read more

It took an unreasonable amount of time for our waitress to show up and in the 20 minutes we waited for our burgers she only showed up a couple times in the last 10 minutes to assure us our food "was almost ready." This review is for Yelpers but I do hope the owner or manager reads it as well. I came for breakfast this morning and it was good-not great or exceptional. I think you have a real opportunity here to do a tremendous breakfast business-I mean people in a line out the door kind of place but, you won't get there if a few things don't change. The atmosphere is a little too forced kitsch but nice overall and the place is always clean-very clean. My waitress was very nice and the bus person was very attentive-great and friendly service. The issue I had was the food which wasn't Memorable and not enough to get me to really want to return. Ordered an omelet with extra cheese and it was kind of burned and there was still not much cheese in it to speak of. Got hash browns which cost nothing to serve and the portion was pretty small-need to load up the hash browns and cook them in butter or part butter and not all oil. Got toast and it came with margarine-real butter should ALWAYS be provided as the standard. Coffee was good and hot but the cream came in plastic containers which I personally do not like. Put out a small pitcher of half and half. I didn't get a cinnamon roll but came close but they are again on the smallish side and I was told they are baked fresher Saturday and not fresh on Sunday. I'd love to see this place succeed with a great breakfast and what I had was only good. Put fresh eggs Benedict and great buttermilk pancakes with vanilla and fresh fruit on your menu! Use thick and crispy bacon and be a little more generous and attentive when it comes to the food. Went to Cafe Manhattan a couple of weeks ago. The pizza was decent. My only issue is that when I ordered the manhattan pizza, my server never asked me what type I wanted. She just assumed Stl style. If you don't tell them you want New York style they make you Stl style. I ordered the manhattan thinking I would get New York style pizza. On top of this, she wasn't a very good server. She maybe came to my table maybe twice. All in all, maybe I just came on a bad day but I would give this place a second chance since their food was decent. read more

It was simply the worst sandwich I have ever eaten in Clayton. corned beef was fatty, grisily and inedible, the toasted rye bread was burnt. Not good. Ended up throwing the sandwich away. Service was horrific! Hands down the most unfriendly waiter I have ever had in my life. Even my teen-aged children commented on his rudeness and lack of concern. Two of the four meals were served at least five minutes before the other two. When the first person finished eating, their plate was picked up and our check was dropped on the table. Three of us were still eating! There only about 5 tables being used at that time, so he can't use the excuse that he was too busy. My kids were even discussing which shake they wanted for dessert. I guess the waiter was interested in helping us with that. The food was okay at best. The bread on the toasted sandwich was soggy. The pizza was not good at all...the crust was horrible. I think the most interesting thing about this place is that on a Saturday evening, there was no manager present. I was told by a waitress on the way out that a manager isn't usually present on the weekends at all. I find this completely inappropriate for a place of business. On top of a horrible evening, as we left, the waiter followed us into the parking lot and yelled something at me. I guess he didn't like the tip I left. I have never been to a restaurant where a server decides what their tip should be. I used to wait tables and I know how hard it can be. That is the first time I have ever left less than 15% tip. I usually tip 20%. Don't stop here...keep heading up the street. Plenty of better places! read more
