Sushi took 50 minutes to serve on a sunday night for 2 people. We went a couple of months ago and what started as a mostly raw menu turned into partial raw. Then we went this weekend and no raw rolls?! Totally commercialized. The fish and other seafood is fresh and of a very high quality. I have never had anything here that was not absolutely delicious. However, when you're dining out you do expect a level of attentive service, you will NOT find that here at Cafe Mochi. Even when they are not extremely busy, the staff is very slow, and worse, often rude. The only reason I keep coming back is because it is located so close to my home and the food is amazing. Otherwise, I would never frequent this establishment. So if you're looking for good sushi and don't mind putting up with slow and inattentive service, then by all means enjoy. read more

we went here originally because I'm a huge sushi fan and it's right by our loft. They have a happy hour from 4.30 to 6.30 with half price drinks and half price sushi- so it gets pretty crowded. the half price sushi drew us in- but also drove us away. the pieces were so small it looked like they just used half the ingredients for the happy hour! not only that, but the rice (on more than one occasion) has been overdone and hard. the meat also tastes a little off. my husband tried the curry the last time we went- giving it one more shot. again, the food was sub par, the service was lacking as all 5 servers serve all tables- they constantly forgot to bring drink refills and we felt we were being interrupted. First of all, no complaints about the sushi here. The sushi rolls are awesome. I love the Bagel Roll and the Philly Roll! The fish always tastes fresh and I've never had any issues with it. They do need to figure out something about the service though. They have one waitress that works lunches and she is painfully slow, and kind of just lacks customer service skills. The last 3 times I've been there, it takes at least 10-15 minutes for her to make it to your table (when it wasn't busy). Drinks take another 15 minutes. Our drink glasses went empty, and I saw her in the kitchen area eating something while hoping for a refill. Being pregnant this visit, when I was ordering, I asked if there was anyway I could substitute imitation crab for the fish that usually comes in the rolls I was ordering. She kind of gave me a weird look and just said "No". Now, I'm not going to be throw a fit about that if it's policy. However, imitation crab costs less than smoked salmon and spicy tuna..so it kind of just doesn't make sense. Secondly, I would be more than willing to pay extra for any substitutions. Working in a restaurant myself, we do everything to accommodate requests for food. And when we tell people no, we follow it with a reason or policy or whatever. I wasn't going to sit there and question her about it, but it just rubbed me the wrong way. I think we need to come back for dinner at some point and see how the service is then, and go from there. But like I said, the food and prices keep us coming back. read more

Just awful! This is NOT good sushi. We live nearby and visit the restaurants on S. Grand all the time, but have never tried Café Mochi - so we thought we'd give the sushi a try. We won't do that again. Besides the service, which is painfully slow. The sushi didn't taste fresh and probably caters to folks who aren't particular about their sushi. It's a weird amalgam of Vietnamese/Japanese Sushi, but either way it wasn't good. Ingredients were missing from the rolls we ordered, and were not corrected by the staff. They simply apologized. It took forever for our order - so replacing them wasn't an option for us. We would have preferred they simply be removed from our bill. But they didn't do that either. I sat with my family for 20 minutes and no one came to greet our table. The place is small and I am usually packed in like a sardine when it comes to seating. I've always received great service and enjoy their menu, which has both standard and specialized sushi options. I've always received great service. I am happy to report that I have found a new favorite spot for sushi. The fish is so fresh. We had the Godzilla roll, white tiger, and volcano roll. I was a little on the fence with the Godzilla roll but I HIGHLY recommend the volcano roll. It was tempura with shrimp, asparagus and avocado roll topped with broiled crab and scallions in spicy mayo...YUM. Service was a little slow but not awful. I'm cringing to give this place 3 stars. If you don't care about service and/or atmosphere, this place is a solid 5/5. Everything I have tried, from appetizers to dinners to the sushi, is delectable. My husband is particularly impressed with the sake selection. Our second visit was on Friday. We don't typically "do sushi," because it ends up being a pretty expensive endeavor (and rightfully so). We split some rolls and nigiri, a plate of yaki-udon, an order of gyoza and shrimp tempura. On a less momentous occasion, I would simply return for their udon noodles--thick, chewy, slurpable. If anything, their spicy tuna roll was a little mushy, but beyond that there are no complaints food-wise. Here is where Cafe Mochi loses two stars. 1.) The atmosphere: Okay, full disclosure. We came here in the dead of winter, so everything was a bit cramped and there was no outdoor seating. We were placed on the second level, our two-person table in a tight corner. You could hear every conversation at every other table in the room, including the drunk teachers grousing about their "a-hole" (elementary school) students. 2.) The service: A group of college-aged folk at a nearby table finished their meal and paid and started to leave. As one of the girls walked past us, she was throwing on her puffy winter coat, brushed up against our table and sent our (mostly full) bottle of sake flying. It fell to the ground with an audible crash and sent bits of ceramic flying everywhere. Everyone in the room was shocked and we all kind of sat in silence as the scene played out. The girl and one of her friends went into the nearby server stations (which was really right around the corner from our table) to alert them what had happened. As one drunk teacher remarked how there were shards of ceramic sake bottle in her meal, we waited close to ten minutes for a busser to come pick up the broken bottle pieces and mop up the sake. Our server returned to our table maybe five minutes after that to ask how we were doing and my husband had to inform him what had happened. I believe he ended up comping us a replacement, but what confounds me is how nobody in the room next door (with servers standing in the doorway) came to take care of it when it created dead silence in our area for what seemed like minutes. A couple servers even walked past the mess, acknowledged it was there, and kept moving. 10-15 minutes to clean up a spill and broken ceramic bottle pieces in such a small area--is that even acceptable from an industry inspection perspective? To reiterate: I won't entirely write-off Cafe Mochi from this experience, because yaki-udon and because there is patio seating in the warmer months--a little more white noise and no bulky winter coats to cause any potential liabilities. read more

Also, be forewarned - the fried calamari is really a tempura vegetable platter with like two pieces of calamari on top.
