DO NOT GO. I usually don't write reviews, but i have to for this place. Rudest customer service/Employees ever. Our server kept missing our orders and took forever. The employees were racist to the point where they kept asking if our plates were finished every 5min when we kept saying we were not finished. Felt like they were waiting for us to leave since we were the only Asians. On top of that, one of the employee spilled coke on my coat and she just gave me napkin, busy cleaning the floor instead of an apology. I asked for manager since she spilled on my $600 coat. The manager didn't even come out to apologize no nothing. I would never go back to this place even if the food was good or not. Stopped by Caffe Reggio before catching a show at The Blue Note... both my friend Rochelle and I have passed this MacDougal Street landmark many times before. If you are catching a play at the Minetta Street Playhouse, Reggio is a popular restaurant for a before and after bite. The Caffee looks like a writers haven: dark, framed photos on the wall and antique lighting. If you are looking for a place to sit, talk and dine for a few this is your place. The menu is eclectic with choices of paninis, omelette and desserts. They are also known for their cappuccinos. We arrived @5 and were seated right away. The place was packed ( be warned: very small and you can practically hear everyone's conversations). We were seated at a tiny table that was on top of dessert display case. Our menus and waters came out quickly. What needed to come out slowly was salad first then a pause until entrees came. ( there wasn't enough room on the table) We ate the following: we shared an apple and walnut salad that really is a dessert like option: melange of different cheeses, grapes, apples and walnuts dressed with yoghurt and honey. The salad was fresh however the yoghurt was soupy and both of us could not taste the honey. The portion is enough for two people to share. The salad comes with 3 different cheeses but they all tasted the same. I ordered the Pasta Campaignola Bianca which consists of penne pasta with diced chicken, toasted garlic, zucchini in a light olive oil dressing served with a side of arugula salad. The entree was very tasty and light and the pasta was cooked al dente. But.. the issue is pasta should be served in a bowl not the oval plate that had the pasta and salad crammed together. It looked like mish mash.. I had to ask for an extra plate to place salad on. Rochelle enjoyed her ravioli a large vodka which was swimming in a lot of sauce. Toast (?) accompanied her dish. Now for desserts: have to say none in display case looked to die for. Tiramisu slice served in a cup? I ordered the cappuccino and was disappointed: foamy, frothy but tasted bitter. The other morning while in town I was thinking about spots I had wanted to hit for breakfast. Near the top of the list was Caffe Reggio. You may think it's for the obvious couple reasons. A scene from Godfather 2 was filmed here. Or possibly because it houses the original cappuccino machine. It sits beautifully up against the far wall. It's beautifully shined up but it somewhat nonchalant in that it doesn't have huge sign overhead. But no, we came for the food. And it was quite good. I wanted to get an eggs bene but when I saw the Canarino Voltaire I had to try it. The poached eggs were perfect and the combination with the toast and rice and cheese was spot on. My friend got the avocado toast which was fresh and not overly fancy. Those dishes combined with a great couple of cups of cappuccino made for a great start to the day. read more

This place has the most abysmal, incompetent, inconsiderate service I've ever experienced. I've been going to Caffe Reggio for 38 years. Have they stopped vetting or training their staff to be even minimally attentive or aware? When I visited this classic landmark a few days ago, I sat down and waited 15 minutes, and no one visited the table. I went to the front and politely asked whether I should order an espresso there (since no one could bother), and they promised to send someone. I had to ask again (once more, politely), and it took another 10 minutes even though there were numerous empty tables. It took me over half an hour just to get an espresso. My friend joined me, and then as we sat talking no one came over for literally an hour and a half. Again, this was not during an incredibly crowded time. The staff was just oblivious and uncaring. This is no longer the stupendous place I've been visiting for decades, but an insufferable experience because the wait staff simply refuse to do their jobs. read more

I want to give this place more stars, for the atmosphere and yummy drinks, but the food and prices cannot allow me to do so. I ordered the eggs benedictine (which the waitress put it as a different item, causing my already delayed food to come out later), and the food was unsatisfactory to say the least. The "hollandaise" sauce is chunky and neon, it tastes like if you mixed all the condiments you could find and slathered it on top of eggs. The bread was chewy and too thin. The fries were cold and greasy, with zero salt. All of this, plus the portion was small and I paid $15 for the food alone (not including tax). Met a friend up for some coffee on a nice afternoon day. The street is super busy and in a prime location. I've seen this place walking by several times and always told myself to go check it out when I get a chance. Had a cafe mocha and tuna sandwich. Service was nice, they were super attentive. The coffee was super strong, so if you easily get jitters then definitely be aware of that. Sandwich was tasty, although nothing special to note. The chairs and tables are rustic (see: old and falling apart) but it adds to that old world feel of European cafe's that are hanging on by a thread. So trade all these perceptions you have of New Yorkers swinging in plastic cups running with caffee because this is the spot of the REAL real New york. Featured in the God Father II among other movies, the real village people of the city enjoy real coffee. The service is friendly and amazing nothing to do with the snobbish and pretentious service you can feel in some places. The staff is warm and the place gives meaning to Hospitality. Don't be intimidated. Sneak in inside the real streets of New York in McDougall st and enjoy a warm amazing cappuccino.
