Sweet cravings just kick in sometimes and it led me to California Donuts for delightful surprise! Such a small cute establishment with adorably unique donuts. So many flavors from a classic glaze, to specialty flavors like cookies and cream, matcha, pb&j, strawberry shortcake, and at one point Line Friends collaboration. I've been to this donut shop a few times and out of all random donuts, the pb&j was pleasantly satisfying. I've enjoyed all the flavors, they taste fresh and have a nice bite. I was left a surprise from my friends on my car this morning with a dozen glazed donuts!! OMGOMGOMG! Soooo good. I mean they melt in your mouth good, the crunchy glaze gives it that "non so che cosa" That's Italian for "Je ne sais quoi" LOL! Amy always greets me warmly and always knows my love of glazed donuts. I find it so hard to read so many negative things from other yelpers, the place is immaculate, the coffee is delicious (yes they have milk), and the donuts are very fresh, no matter what time of day! Great donuts. I order a dozen every weekend for when I have guests over and have done so for over a year. Recently, they've gotten really lazy and no longer allow you to select which flavors you want in the dozen on delivery apps, but you could still call it in. Then they started not answering the phone when you call. Most recently, they've answered the phone and told me it's a "busy time" so they normally wouldn't "do that" (I.e: let me choose the flavors of the donuts I'm paying for with my own money), but that they'd make an exception "just this time". I told her what I wanted, nothing complicated I just said mostly chocolate donuts please, she said ok, I thanked her, 30 minutes later I get a box of the nastiest flavored donuts, like matcha, and ONE single chocolate donut, completely disregarding and blatantly ignoring what I asked for. I have been going here for 10+ years, but I've finally decided I can't do it anymore. It's hit or miss, but when it's good, it's really good. Unfortunately, lately, there have been too many inconsistencies.. and when it's bad, it's really bad. The donuts have been super stale lately, even on Sunday morning. The owner will throw them in the microwave to try to mask the staleness, but it doesn't help. Tip: That's also how you know they're old because she doesn't always do that. There are days when she's in a bad mood, and she can be really mean. She also gets angry when you don't pay in cash. Treating customers the way she does is unacceptable. BUT she can also be nice. It's just not worth the gamble anymore. Their cream-filled donuts used to be so good, but there were several times the cream was rancid. A few times she ran out of cream so she cut it in half and put whipped cream in the middle. Not the same at all and very messy. I feel bad because I can tell that business is not as good as it used to be, which is probably why the quality has gone downhill. I placed an order through DoorDash and received an incorrect item. Mistakes happen, so I reached out to DoorDash support, and they offered to redeliver the missing item. Totally fair. I then called the shop directly, just to update them and make sure the right item would be prepared this time. The woman who answered and who I believe is the owner acknowledged that she had misread the order. Okay, fine. But then, completely out of the blue, she called me back a few minutes later and just unleashed on me. She was yelling, accusing me of trying to scam her, and flat-out refused to fulfill the redelivery for the item she forgot to send in the first place. She was shockingly rude, unprofessional, and completely irrational, over DONUTS she forgot to include. I was stunned at how she spoke to me. It felt like I was being punished for her mistake. After reading other reviews, it's clear this isn't a one-off incident. Many others have noted that the owner is hostile, disrespectful, and even accused of making up prices and scamming customers. This is a pattern. I seriously hope this place gets removed from delivery apps. No one deserves to be treated like that, especially when the customer is just trying to resolve a simple issue. Just happened to be in the area, so I stopped in to take a look. I'm not thrilled about the actual location. The strip mall is located off the 101. Parking is tricky, since the shop is in the corner. I parked in front of the shop in the very corner. I just had to make sure I'd be able to maneuver myself out. I couldn't tell if the shop was open. The lights were dim or off on a hot day and I don't think there was A/C. I was there late in the afternoon and the donuts didn't look that fresh. I was there so decided to try what was available anyway. The Reese's peanut butter cup was probably my favorite. This was filled with PB and the donut was covered with chocolate and candy pieces. I thought I would love the cronut, except it was not as soft as a croissant as I've had at other places. Matcha was okay. The matcha glaze was all I liked about this. Unicorn and pink glaze sprinkles was average. Personally, I probably wouldn't come here in the afternoon. I don't think you're getting fresh donuts. The area is not the best. I've been here twice. The first time, I ordered three and the owner said when you buy a half dozen she doesn't charge the $1 credit card fee... She pointed to a sign that kinda proved that, but it was written in a way that could be perceived multiple ways (in hindsight). Right off the freeway in a little shopping center stands one of the California Donut Shop Chains. This one though isn't the one that has the huge variety of fun, cute donuts. This is a little more of the divey donut shop. This one does have vegan donuts and very few fun donuts. Predominately your average classic donuts. They also sell sandwiches, bagels, coffee, tea, and juice. The vegan donuts were ok. Little on the dry side. For $2.25 each I definitely expected more. Service was good. On a morning out and about with a friend, we decided to cross a few 'Los Angeles to-do's" off our bucket list. If you search anything about LA into Pinterest, California Donuts is more than likely to pop up. It is such a hot Instagram spot for us twenty something ladies. Honestly though, it wasn't nearly as exciting as I anticipated. It is very similar to pretty much any Asian-owned donut shop across America. I love these little stores, and love even more to indulge in some tasty donuts every once in a while. I think now that this place has such a big name for itself in such a big city, it is starting to get over hyped. While they do have some classic donuts that are cheap, their 'specialty' ones, which are pretty much all of the cute one everyone wants go up to $3 per donut. I just came in to pick up donuts for a funeral. I went over pricing with her and then she proceeds to charge me for the premium donuts when I didn't get a single one. Whenever I am in town I always make sure to visit California Donuts. I always come pretty late at night and there is always a line! The workers do a good job at keeping the line moving fast. The assortment and creative flavors are really exciting. I always go with the panda, which is a donut iced in white chocolate and topped with Oreos. The donut is really soft and just so tasty. My sister got the fruity pebble donut said it was good too. The only problem with this place is the parking, but other then that this place is amazing!
