I'm not sure I've ever left a Yelp review before, but my experience at CAV last night was so exceptional I felt compelled to tell the world about it. I'd driven by this place a million times over the years, and last night was my very first time stopping in. Great decor inside; a definite conversation starter. Service was EXCELLENT. Jeff C. went above and beyond to make sure my SO and I were well taken care of. The lobster risotto special I ordered was so well-prepped and delicious that here I am, some 15-hours later, sitting behind my desk still salivating over it. She got the Filet and was equally as blown away (I tried it and can confirm). She also loved the Toasted Almond Martini so much that I've now been tasked with buying all of its listed ingredients and trying to recreate it here at home. I'd give this place 6-stars if I could. 100% will be back. read more

One word, obsessed! The second I walked into CAV I fell in love. I just loved the decor and atmosphere there, it is really hard to beat! I recently reached out to them about possibly having my rehearsal dinner there I am so obsessed, and their private dining area is gorgeous. We went with a bottle of wine for the table and I really appreciated the variety of options as well as the variety of prices. We had no problem finding an affordable bottle that we all agreed on. I went with their hand cut rolled pasta with ricotta, in a shallot cream sauce. The finace went with the duck two ways dish and ate every bite of it. He preferred the duck breast portion while my friend Laura T who got the same dish preferred the bbq-ish leg. The pear chicken dish was also ordered at the table and was raved about. Basically there was not one thing that we would have changed as far as entrees go. Although the dessert menu looked impressive we all had so many desserts left over from Christmas that we decided to pass. The service was great as well. They have a free parking lot directly across from the restaurant, you really can't beat that in downtown Providence! read more

My absolute favorite in Providence. An eclectic fusion of Italian, French, American, and the like don this gem's extensive menu. The ambience is absolutely beautiful, as if you walked back in time with chandeliers and all. I've been to CAV several times and loved it every time. Recently I went for my birthday and was treated to one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. Our waitress (whose name I believe was Jennifer) was a pro at her job-- funny and engaging without being invasive, and gave us just the right level of attentiveness without making us feel either stifled or ignored. The food was wonderful as usual, and our table was perfectly cozy-- armchairs to sit in, enough space that we didn't feel like we were on top of any other table-- just lovely. I can understand how CAV's eclecticness isn't for everyone, and during restaurant week and other times that they're very busy, things can get hectic. But to me CAV and their staff always fall on the right side of the divide between "waitstaff are only human and sometimes make mistakes" versus "don't know what they're doing and don't care about their jobs". CAV is one of my favorite restaurants in Rhode Island, and I'll continue to recommend them to anyone and everyone who asks. Also-- the brie appetizer with the walnuts and jam? Had a wonderful time at CAV restaurant! Servers were attentive, atmosphere was fun, and the food was delicious! Came here on Valentine's Day and it was obviously full. We had reservations but I'm not sure if they would also be required for a typical weekend or not (Either way, they are on OpenTable). One helpful item, if you are looking for bottles of wine, they are at the back of the regular menu. This wasn't pointed out for us and we ended up ordering by the glass from the drink menu. We started out with the walnut-topped Brie as an appetizer. It was delicious, and pretty big too! From there my wife ordered the duck and I had the filet mignon (~$35, pictured). The filet mignon was served atop mashed potatoes, asparagus, and sliced potatoes that were similar to steak fries, but they weren't actually fried. It was all terrific, and I was very happy with the meal. Everything here was very good, and we were big fans of the overall aesthetic. I was here for brunch with a group earlier this week. Love The Bag sandwich and the dressing on the salad that comes with it. Good coffee. The fruit tart looks better than it tastes, bland. Skip it and get one from Pastiche. The lobster bisque has way too much vanilla, off putting taste. The server was nice but yet again, forgetful and not good at refilling coffee. Out waiter disappeared for a good 20 minutes to who knows where, even after I had just asked for coffee. They were not that busy. Not being able to handle a task as simple as refilling coffee is always a big negative to me at a brunch place. The bread and butter and chicken caesar salad is good here. I've been here a few times and like the atmosphere but it could improve on some things. read more

I arrived at the perfect solution: CAV. This used to be a favorite romantic spot for my wife and me; my mother had been once a long time ago and though she loved it, had few opportunities to return; my children had grown older and well-behaved enough to take in a nice meal. So I booked a Mother's Day reservation for six and awaited the special day. Well, the time came, and we met disappointment by a thousand cuts. Twenty minute wait to be seated despite our reservation. We then waited to get water...to see our server...and to find out what menu we should actually consult (the time of day suggested brunch was available, as was dinner - our menus were handed to us open to lunch, and my mom had heard there was a special Mother's Day menu - finally we were told there were a few specials, but they were decidedly in dinner service). Our server was nice, but had to apologize for the long wait for food - and then I had to watch some disappointed faces as several orders of very brunch-oriented Belgian waffles came to rest on the table next to us while we had exclusively perused dinner options. Other notes - we had five appetizers and soups around the table; all were all delicious, and it's worth noting that this was the first place my wife and I stumbled upon the simple and satisfying notion of baked Brie. The bar is an asset that never seems to claim its full stature - I always see full tables, but the bar is frequently treated as a place to merely bide your time awaiting a table, despite its own inviting capability (though it is in a high-traffic area). Bathrooms are adequate, and finding them is a fleeting moment's thrill of ducking down a faux-Casablancan alleyway. For those arriving with guests unsteady on their feet, please watch the ramp as you make your way in - quite a grade for a wheelchair, for example. Anyway, after quite some time, our entrees arrived, and I'm glad to say the food was not a disappointment. My wife and I were pleased with our sushi-grade tuna and Caesar salad, and my parents both got the scallops and raved about them. So that helped matters. Still, we were solidly over two hours into our sitting - by that time, I was proud that my kids had acquit themselves well but I had cabin fever. Even paying the check felt protracted. Bottom line: CAV retains charm, offers tasty dishes, and is a Providence spot worth trying. I'd just counsel that preparing for a distinctly lengthy, languid affair is advised - and maybe fete the holidays elsewhere. read more

Yikes. I genuinely don't like leaving bad reviews, but unfortunately CAV warrants it. The ambience is fine (though beware of a very strong fish smell). We ordered 5 different entrees and many of the appetizers and the food was wholly underwhelming. The mushroom risotto was highly recommended but came out deconstructed with far too many mushrooms and heavily salted. Both dishes were left barely touched by our table. Steaks were also underwhelming - tasted like a fast casual type piece of meat. We came with a party of six and everyone was disappointed. For the price (about $30 per entree), don't have high expectations for CAV. I should note the staff was very nice and the service was great, but the food really is not high quality. read more

Came here and had a very nice lunch during work. I decided to get the shrimp scampi. I normally don't order pasta dishes when I'm out, but the freshly cut fettuccine caught my eye. It was delicious! I didn't get an alcoholic drink with my meal, but they have a decent list of beer etc. The decor is very unique too, it looks like they have a lot of antique things. They even have a sleigh attached to the ceiling! I would love to go back for a nice dinner with my wife! read more

My BF and I went to CAV for dinner and we loved the decor....eclectic, Asian, Middle Eastern, African pieces, all good. I had the meatloaf, which I asked with sauce on the side....it came with sauce on it. The meal was very salty. The haricot vertes and mashed potatoes were good. My BF had the homemade pasta dish and it was very heavy and creamy. Way creamy. Next time we should try some lighter versions like the scallops or the pizza app. read more

I go out with my girls once or twice a year for a nice dinner. We get way overdressed, take a bazillion pictures and catch up on all the important stuff. It being the holiday season, and us being poor college students, we wanted someplace that wouldn't totally break the bank. We loved CAV. The four of us had entrees and dessert for $85 - The dessert was breathtaking. I got the coconut sorbet, which was served in the half-shell with a maraschino cherry in an oversized martini glass. Charming. I loved the decor, I can see where some may not like it, though. It was a bit eccentric. It was really tough to find anything that was dairy-free, but there seemed to be a better selection for that on the lunch menu, so I will definitely be back to check that out. Came with a group of 7 for brunch. Amazing atmosphere. Cozy and trendy and very unique. Bit classy environment so I would wear your Sunday bests. Our server was extremely nice and we were running a bit late but they had no problem holding our reservations. Food is wonderful. The reason I deducted 1 star is because when I called for reservations the first time and when I called a week later to let them know were running late, it took 3 phone calls to get someone to answer. It also took a while for the check to come and I was starting to get antsy since we had been there a few hours. Also I love creme brûlée but there's was only sub par. And it was also sooooo hot. I mean it was cold outside but they had the heat up so high it was a bit ridiculous. I will definitely come back again so I'm sure I'll be editing this review back to 5 stars. read more

I found this place on Yelp when looking for a Providence area restaurant that served brunch. My two sisters and I were planning on taking my mother out for brunch for her 80th birthday, before we went to the Biltmore for a spa day. When I read the reviews and saw the pictures, this place seemed pretty great. I had no idea just how great it would be until we arrived on a Saturday at 10:30 for brunch. The restaurant itself is beautiful to look at. I loved the old brick building and the rustic feel of the place. I live in an old brick building that was converted into lofts, so the place really made me feel at home! The decorations include chandeliers that are all different but seem to match perfectly. The huge wreath that is covered in decorate glass garland and white lights was beautiful to look at while waiting for our meals! Enough about the decor and on to the food. My sister and I had peach infused champagne, which was one of the most delicious drinks I have ever tasted. I even went out and found a bottle because it might be my new favorite brunch beverage! Move over mimosas and bellinis! I ordered the poached eggs on a bed of fresh spinach with garden salsa, roasted potatoes and grilled french bread. To say that this dish was good is an understatement. The flavors complimented each other and I ate the whole plate, leaving myself satisfied but not completely overstuffed. My sisters both got omelets. One of them was filled with balsamic grilled onions and goat cheese. I must go back and try this dish next! My mother got the classic steak and eggs, which looked so good I had a small bit of food envy, except that mine was too good to have it for long. Our waiter (whose name I can't remember at this point, and I apologize for that!) was so nice and attentive we felt like royalty. We never lacked anything and everyone who came to our table was polite and professional. It really made the meal that much better knowing we were being waited on by such great people! I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant for brunch, and I can only imagine that lunch and dinner are equally as perfect. Every year, me and my college roommate (RISD/Brown) pick CAV to celebrate our birthday/reunion, when she comes to Providence from DC/LA... about twice a year. She is a die hard vegetarian with food restrictions & CAV never fails to impress. The food and service are hands down the best and the ambiance, OMG, such a good spot to have an amazing night out. We were there on 4/5, an hour before our reservation, starving after shopping all afternoon, & they were able to seat us even though they were clearly full up. We had an amazing time with great food and drink...love those Orange Blossoms, & the Cucumber/Basil martini's were stellar as well. Okay, so we only drink on special occasions, so that is probably why I forgot my phone case with my phone, credit cards & more at the restaurant. But the next day I saw they opened at 9:30 & raced down to see if they had found it. I arrived early & they were nice enough to let me in, located my phone & listened to me babble about my life & how important my phone was. I was so impressed by how professional & polite the staff were...I mean they always are...but I was truly babbling..they could have just shown me to the door. Menu options are limited and pricey for portion size and quality. Restaurant decor is congested, not cohesive and the artifacts made my energy feel heavy. I was appalled at the condition of the restroom- nearby bars are cleaner. Dumplings were a soggy disappointment. We had brunch on Saturday afternoon. We were promptly greeted w a smile & an ease that immediately made us comfortable. Excellent dirty martini & spicy Bloody Mary. I loved my Maryland blue crab cake - nicely seasoned w scallions, red pepper, butter,excellent pan sear, no breading evident- served w greens, a grilled large slice of bread reminiscent of Hawaiian sweet bread but looked like Texas toast & an over easy egg. Home fries are just perfectly pan fried & seasoned to perfection, Hollandaise sauce was perfect too. Warm, friendly, un-rushed, & knowledgable service. If you live here or are just visiting you just HAVE to come! Note: it's a bit tricky to locate even though there are many signs as it is tucked back in the corner of a courtyard. We made reservations a bit late for a Friday night dinner. We had wanted to dine at a restaurant in the Italian area but the preferable dining times were taken. This was on our list though. We were dropped off by the car service in an area that looked utterly abandoned. The entrance is in the courtyard. The decor is charming and random. You will find a disco ball, tiki/Polynesian art, crystal light fixtures and a red sleigh hanging from the ceiling and around the room. We were seated promptly. Our server was wonderful! My husband ordered a martini. She personally made sure he had the kind of olives he preferred. I had a glass of cava. The martini was incredibly smooth! Wow! We started with the calamari. Delicious! Definitely a must. We then split a bowl of the clam chowder. We had the lobster and pea pasta. The lobster meat was sweet and cooked perfectly. The pasta was al dente and sauced perfectly. We had the scallops for the fish course. They were prepared just right. They were succulent, not rubbery as can happen sometimes when they are overcooked. I had a glass of the Coppala Claret. I will certainly be having claret again. We enjoyed this course very much. Sadly, we were too full for dessert. Overall, this restaurant is homey and the food was tasty. Our service was top notch. The appetizers of coconut shrimp and wasabi crab were fantastic. Her chicken with wine poached pears also great. Our server did a great job as well. Why the three stars then? 4.5 stars (the extra .5 stars goes to our bus boy who kept refilling our water glasses before it ever went empty! I love places where you do not have to constantly ask for a water refill!!! Amazing!) My fiance and I was in town for a weekend and decided to check out CAV. Since I am not from the area locating it was a bit difficult but thank the lord for GPS! Once we found the secret entrance we were impressed with the place. I was expecting the place to be a bit chi-chi but the staff was very warm and inviting. The place is an antique shop as well as a restaurant. The majority of the merchandise, which served as the decor as well, were asian and african inspired. Although I was very impressed with the concept of CAV I felt there was really no consistency in the decor and it was just a mosh pit of stuff. The price tag on the pieces were very expensive and it made me wonder if people actually go in here to shop. Now on to the good stuff, the food. The food was exceptionally good here. We started with a plate of mussels in a coconut curry sauce. Being southeast asian I've had better curry sauce but the starter was tasty nonetheless. I ordered a sole dish with capers and cucumbers and my fiance ordered a salmon dish with lychee (check out the pictures in the photo section). I prefered my dish as I felt the salmon was a little too sweet for my taste. The fish for both dishes were perfectly cooked. The only complaint I had about my dish was the extra garnishes. i do not care for extra "fluff" on my plate which I cannot eat. Overall our experience at CAV was wonderful. Whether you are looking for a romantic night out, a place to get together with friends, or just simply a well prepared meal for the night I strongly suggest to make a visit. We have dined here several times before, but this is our first Valentine brunch. We made reservations with the request for a table next to their ring of fire, which they fulfilled. The ambiance was radiant and romantic, with long stemmed roses in the tables spectacular chandeliers and a ring of fire, and rose petals draped some of their bejeweled chandeliers. Excellent service all around. The martinis we ordered were a surprising variant of their usual pear martini--reddened with pomegranate juice for Valentine with an extra sour mix. Nice lingering aroma. We shared an order of Belgian waffle with strawberry and thyme syrup for our sweet plate. For my savory plate I had the poached eggs with applewood smoked bacon, and my girlfriend had their poached egg on brioche bread and Maryland crab cake. Both scrumptious. This is both a Providence landmark and a consistently excellent and innovative restaurant. read more

My family and I went here for dinner last night. Going to go as far as to say this was one of the best dinner experiences we have had in a long time. Food was absolutely delicious. I got the Parmesan encrusted chicken and was blown away with the flavor. Daughter got the salmon and husband got the filet mignon. Everyone was extremely pleased with their meals!! We we're just wandering around for a brunch place and found CAV by accident. Eccentric but tasteful Decore with an antique flare. The food...... simply fabulous doesn't cover it The seared chicken with asian chive dumplings and fusion sauce blew my mind. The lobster bisque had a nice caramel flavor that all lobsters want to grow up and become. The crème brûlée, fruittia di Bosco and chocolate tort were unbelievably good. Oh CAV, I really want to like you. This was my third (and likely final) visit. Against my better judgment we went here for restaurant week... and it seemed they didn't want to put in any effort. There were no choices for the appetizer or dessert, neither of which was anything to write home about. For the entree, we opted for the fish tacos, which were pretty tasteless and deep fried, quite unhealthy - nothing noteworthy. The pumpkin ravioli were actually quite tasty, but covered in a rich cream sauce, which could not have been good for us. The atmosphere here is great, it really is a shame. If I go back in the future, it will be for cocktails, not to eat. read more

I have been to CAV a few times over the past several years for dinner and just recently for brunch. Every visit has been a good experience. We once had a 'room' in the alcove to ourselves and it was delightful. Privacy created by hanging antique rugs, and attentive service; we felt like we were the only ones in the restaurant and our waiter was amazing. You used to be able to reserve for a private corner if you have a special evening planned. As it's been (quite) a few years since then, I'm not sure if they still offer that option. On our latest visit for brunch, our party started with Walnut Encrusted Brie and Bruschetta. Wow all around. I could have (and almost succeeded in) eaten the entire plate of brie by myself! Buttery, warm, sweet, with buttery crackers. Just what I hoped it would be. The bruschetta had big chunks of tomato and artichoke with grilled bread wedges so you can take as much or as little as you like. Again, a gastronomic success. We did not know brunch was served until 4:00 on Saturday and I had scoped out the menu in advance and knew what I wanted to order for lunch. The brunch menu is not extensive and one of our party has dietary restrictions so it took a while to choose. I settled on an omelet with spinach, feta and mushrooms. A very tasty flavor combination that was well prepared and presented. I ate so much brie it was impossible to eat the entire omelet, although I did keep trying until the waiter rescued me from an exploding stomach by removing my plate! The ambiance is fun and light, the wait staff were all very pleasant and efficient. Service was at a good pace; nothing was rushed out to us so you know they were making everything as ordered. The entree order was placed after our apps arrived, so there was a nice break in between that allowed us to enjoy the apps and each others company. Outdoor seating is available, but I really enjoy the inside of this restaurant as part of the experience. With drinks and tip, it came to just over $30/person. read more

Hate giving a bad review, but whattttt???? The food was terrible at best. How can this place get good reviews?!?!? Party of 10. Good waiter, tried hard, hence the 2 stars instead of 1. Tasted 3 apps...1. crispy brussels with tofu in a gloopy sauce clearly thickened with corn starch--awful, 2. Mushrooms were ok at best...another thickened tasteless sauce with hard bread pieces--gross 3. Walnut Brie melted on crackers was not bad, probably the best dish all night. Bread basket of horrible French bread--it was the cheap cardboard bread you'd buy at the supermarket, and stale at that. Dinner: after tasting the apps, I stuck with the Caesar salad and added salmon. Tiny piece of salmon was tasty for all 3 bites. When they brought my salad with this tiny piece of salmon on it, everyone at the table was embarrassed and looked away; It was quite awkward. Salad was decent with good dressing. Bread sticks were 100% inedible--rocks. Tried to bite one and quit. Tasted my friends shrimp and beans over cavatappi--utterly uninspiring flavor and sauce--just bad. A couple people ordered the scallops. They looked OK over a small mound of plain, boring Uncle Ben's white rice. The food at Cav was like a bad restaurant from 1986. I finally had the chance to stop by CAV for the first time today, for restaurant week. This place is so unique, rich tones and textures, beautiful chandeliers and eclectic decor (African mask, Buddha's and books). The staff was very welcoming, they sat us down promptly. We did the prefixed menu, you have the option of 3 or 4 courses, I did the 4 courses. Course 1 is a salad with candied walnuts and Gorgonzola cheese, it was delicious. My second dish was the fried cauliflower which was Ah-mazing! The ginger garlic sauce, was unreal. I ordered the ratatouille parmesan baked gnocchi for my entre, it was pretty good but I wasn't blown away. My bf ordered the grilled sirloin steak with fries. He absolutely loved it, the fries were delicious. The blackberry merlot sorbet was the perfect ending. Overall I really enjoyed this place and I will definitely be back. read more

Great atmosphere, they were kinda busy though so service wasn't the best. Parking was pretty easy by Providence standards. Crab cake was awesome. It's like an antique shop converted to a bar and restaurant. read more
