It has been roughly 11 years since my last slice of real NY pizza, and this location did not disappoint. Listed as one of the best slices in and city, and not to mention the world was very well deserved. In thr past I only would ever get a classic cheese slice, but this time around I had to venture out. My favorite for the pepperoni, but the cheese and Margherita slices were equally amazing. Then sauce was savory and pronounced, and each slice was vastly different than the other. No need for add on, but the crushed red pepper flakes added another demention to the dish, however, the food on its on is great enough. So this spot was a stop on a pizza food tour I participated in. I definitely could've easily walked past it if I wasn't part of the tour. It's a very underwhelming external façade but inside there is some tables and seats plus high tops if you're with a few friends and wanna have a quick bite of New York style pizza. It's definitely solid thin crust crispy lots of mozzarella and if you get pepperoni, they use the small Canadian style that gets really cooked well done and crunchy. I would definitely recommend if you're in the NYU or Saint Mark's area of the city for an authentic slice of New York style pizza there's no table service you walk up to the counter in order and the good thing is you don't have to order by the pie. One of my favorite slices we got in NYC! After a long day pizza crawling around the city we decided Cello's would have to wait until another day, but I'm so happy we still managed to make it in. We ordered a burrata and vodka slice to share, and while both were damn good, it was the vodka slice that stole the show. Easily the best vodka sauce we tried on our pizza tour. Both slices came topped with freshly grated parm, olive oil, and basil, all touches that added to how great these slices were. The crust here was also pretty perfect, held its shape and was super crispy. We came in on a Tuesday afternoon and the place was empty, a nice switch up from the longer lines we had at other places over the weekend. They had a decent amount of seating so we were able to grab a seat and enjoy or slices sitting down. Service was friendly and slices came out quickly. Definitely a good spot to go if you want some solid NY style pizza. read more

Pretty chill vibe in the place with a little bit of seating. It took a second for the guys to ask if we wanted to order but I shared the burrata slice and the margherita slice. The margherita was my favorite and really flavorful while the burrata on the burrata slice was kind of cold still and taste-wise missed the mark a bit! I had a great quick bite at Cello's Pizzeria while walking my way around Manhattan recently. The shop is low-key, but has a welcoming atmosphere, helpful staff, and really tasty slices. I ordered a marinara slice and a pepperoni + jalapeño slice, along with a cold Peroni beer. The slices were crisp but not burnt, had zero flop, and the sauce was bursting with flavor. Toppings were good on the topping slice, too. Overall the meal was quick, warm, super tasty, and satiating. I recommend checking this spot out if you're hanging out in the East Village and are hankering for some great pizza. Or even if you just want a drink--they've got a pretty good selection to choose from. read more

This place has been on my pizza list for quite some time. And today was finally the day! Came from almost an hour away just to eat here. I'm glad there was no line, no long waiting, because we were HUNGRY! The four of us ordered the hot jalapeño and pepperoni slice, plain, vodka, regular pepperoni, and chicory bacon slices, had them double cut and shared everything so we could all get a taste of each. I'd say, the pizza was just alright, I was expecting to be blown away considering all the rave reviews. Is it just influencer hype?! Idk. Maybe it's just not my type of pizza. In my opinion, the pizza was way too overcooked, too much crunch, too dry, and just a bit too salty for me. I like my pizza a little bit more moist than these were, with a bit of that grease (just a little) and just enough chew/crisp...not crunchy crunchy. If you like a super crunchy undercarriage and crust, and your pizza a little on the dry side...maybe you'd give this place more stars. But for me, not something I'd crave again, but I'd definitely crave a nice refreshing soda to wash it all down and help with the dry crunchy crust. Side note, apparently we caught the place on a day they were short staffed. I asked one of the guys behind the counter if I could either borrow the pizza cutter to slice up one of my slices into squares for my 1yo or if he could do it for me, he responded very rudely and gave me the most "f*ck outta here" glare, and was completely unpleasant. Another staff member apologized to me later on about that guy's behavior, which I appreciated, but that guy needs an attitude adjustment and a lesson in hospitality. If he's not happy to work at a popular, busy establishment and have a job, then maybe he needs to go kick rocks. But to end on a positive, the spot was overall a cool place to hang with friends, especially in their outdoor porch section. It's perfect for people watching on St Marks. Good for the area, but not a top tier slice in the city (don't think anyone calls them that, but just in case people you know oversell it). Compared to some of the smaller slice shops in the city, there's a good amount of seating inside, and they're open reasonably late if you don't want to walk over to Joe's. For that, it's a good option. They do occasionally overcook your slices, turning the crust into crackers, but the pizza itself is still true to a NYC slice texture. It isn't super memorable or differentiated, but it's still one of the better slices in the neighborhood. read more

Excellent dough and crust: crispy, light, airy and delicious. Best two slices here are definitely the tomato and burrata slices. You can tell the sauce is well balanced not too tart or acidic. Whether you have it plain or add the burrata you're in for a treat. Second time here and can say there's definitely consistency here. Happened to run into one of the owners (Stephen) while I was here on my second visit. He was engaging with the customers and proud of his product. In my ear hustling I overheard him sharing his story and how he got into the pizza business. Definitely in my rotation of top pizzas in NY. Tl;dr review- Burrata is much better than the plain. Crust is a bit burnt for my liking. Cheese a bit saltier than most. Slices are nice and thin with a bright tomato sauce. I went pretty recently to this crowded slice shop and got two slices which was $10.89 or so after tax including one of their specialties which is expected a bit for a more modern slice spit. They have adequate enough seating inside and hey it's St Mark's so there's close enough spots you can munch by if not. The two slices I ordered were the burrata and the plain where the former is a tomato pie (with the only cheese being said burrata) and the later is a more standard NYC slice outside of the extra grated cheese on top (I presume pecorino) where the burrata was much better. The first I had was the Plain which as said had some grated cheese added post order. My biggest issue with the slice as said above was the bottom crust which was a bit burnt for my liking which has a good crunch but leaves a bitter aftertaste. This is even in comparison to L'Industrie or other more modern spots. This left the remaining crust at the top of the pizza not that pleasant to munch on. The grated cheese combined with the cheese on top was a bit salty but not too much compared to some other spots. The highlight is the tomato sauce which is bright and acidic and pairs with the crust. It was an alright plain slice but there's much better. Better is the burrata which they add some olive oil which was I believe 50 cents more. The lack of other cheese on top as noted was a good thing as it was less salty now and highlighted the good tomato sauce. The burrata was also good quality being nice and creamy. The combo of both meant I could ignore the crust here a bit more as the tomato sauce and burrata flavor kind of fit with it. This was in short not the best burrata slice I've had (due to the crust mostly) but it was up there. This was in short miles better than the plain and worth the price point. The plain gets a 3 at best and the burrata gets a 4. For the price point, I'll round down as there's cheaper places with better larger slices and I just really disliked the crust too much to likely stop in again. read more

Very good slice of pizza in East village! Cello's is a medium-sized pizzeria good for take-outs or dining in. Slices start at $4 each for plain, which isn't the cheapest but pretty standard nowadays (for a decent slice at least). The cheese slices come with fresh Parmesan that's a bit crunchy and contrasts the soft cheese nicely. There is ample sauce with solid taste. The dough was crispy and would say the crust is thin-medium-sized and also quite crunchy. There is a bit of basil (one really) per slice which I guess is a decent attempt. It was hot but not so hot you'd need to wait to cool and ready to eat almost immediately. The staff were quite fast serving slices in minutes even with having multiple orders. Overall one of my favorite Manhattan slices and will definitely return! read more

I found my new favorite pizza spot on St. Marks - Cello's has some of the best pizza slices in NYC in my opinion. My friend was running late so I popped into Cello's after a quick google search and ordered the Vodka Jalapeno slice ($5.44). The crust has the perfect ratio of thin dough throughout and a nice, perfectly burnt char to the crispy edges. After they heat up your slice they sprinkle some thinly shredded cheese on top which was a nice addition. Loved everything about this slice and can't wait to come back! read more

Cello's Pizza has a retro-ish classic pizzeria feel and ambiance--subway tiled floors, soft lighting, pizza place palette of decades passed, and chill vibes. there's a good amount of seating for a small space as i thought it was was way smaller but, it actually has several different tables options and the place doesn't feel cramped. there are a variety of pizza pies and slices on display to choose from. ordered a plain cheese slice to go, and by chance i got one from a fresh pie that just came out of the oven. the plain cheese slices are finished with shredded parmesan and basil...which is always a nice touch. Cello's homage to the classic NYC slice is a thinnish crust pizza that has a crispy bottom and crust with some give and chew (not crackery). the sauce is saucy--very tomatoey but not sweet. since, i got a slice from a fresh pie...the sauce felt like it was laid thicker versus a reheated slice where the sauce would have felt flatter. the mozzarella was think blanket was melty smooth richness (not too much and not too little). the slice didn't need to be folded since it held firm, but I folded it out of habit for a quick winter walk 'n' eat and hit the spot. the pizza is very much quality and it shows in the lightness of the crust to the balance in the sauce. though tbh i like a little less sauce on my slices but again it was a slice from a fresh pie which contributed to its being more saucy than a reheated one. the service at Cello's is pleasant and quick. definitely order from the cashier not the counter guy as counter guy when i was there told me there were no plain slices coming out but when I went to the cashier...she told me one was just coming out. lol. anyway, Cello's is parked on a busy block of St. Marks but it never feels overly busy and that works for me! read more

We are on a mission to try all of New Yorks top pizza places. Just checked out L'industrie (review posted). Cello's was highly recommended and lived up to the hype. The only reason I gave 4 stars not 5 was because joes still stands at my number one (and of course lucali). We tried the plain, vodka, and pepperoni. By far the pepperoni was our fav, surprisingly then vodka, then plain. It was delicious but honestly tasted slightly reheated. Also too much crust for my liking. If I was in the area I would definitely be back. Also funny anecdote, nothing to do with cellos, but I got a canned Diet Coke and let me tell you I am pretty sure that was cherry cola in the wrong packaging read more

The vodka pie should have been tossed out, but it was served to patrons anyway. Dropping my rating lower for the indifference for quality.
